Dang, can't remember it's designation, but that is a prototype HEAVY mine-clearing panzer. (see the PzII turret on top?). It's supposed to use those pads for blasting the mines. Rear wheel steering.

It's kinda obvious why this never saw active duty.... :p

I remember it now. It's a NK-101.

The first picture is a SP 60cm "Karl" Mörser. Think the Russians calls it a "SU-600".

Heheh now I know.

These beauties are at the Kubinka armor museum outside Moscow. Aberdeen in all it's glory, but the Kubinka probably dwarves it, by size of collection and not the least, the condition of it's displays.

Or at least it looks like it, when I found the site. :)

from the picture of the mine clearer you can see where George Lucas got some ideas for the Imperial walkers in the orginal series of Star Wars.

Come Jess, join the power of the dark side.

Cool, as a kid I built a 1/72 scale model of that beauty along with it's ammo loading vehicle (on a PzIV chassis) ... I am amazed to see one still exists and a Maus along side it too!!:D I'll have to add Kubinka to the list of places I'd love to visit (so far I've only made it to the Imperial War museum in London ... wish I could have spent more than only one day there :( )

Wow, Karl 60cm. I have never seen a picture of one, but I have read of them in a book. I think only a small number (6 at most) were ever built, and each one needed a couple of ammo carriers to keep it supplied. Must have been jolly good time loading one of those - I guess there is crane somewhere for it.

I think they went to use somewhere around 1942 or 1943 in eastern front, not any better idea of their achievements or later fate (I guess they were pretty slow and prone to mechanical troubles - like everything heavy and experimental).

I want to see those available in SPWAW too - any ideas for technical specifications?

I would hate to be on the receiving end of one.

How much would the projectile weigh?

I guess the rate of fire was not too good, which would make them a bit less deadly - but it would still be pretty nasty to be on the receiving end.

60cm must be a freaking big shell - I guess it is about the size of a 500 lbs bomb or something like that. Great for blowing up whole buildings!

IRT Willy

Dragon Models released a 1/35 scale model of that Karl Heavy Mortar a few months ago if your interested. It should be available from your neighborhood hobby shop now.

I'm planning to pick up a copy for myself as soon as I finish my exams and have some vacation time, it'll nicely compliment the 1/35 scale Maus I already have. :D

Btw, the Karlgerat, of which 6 were built, 4 of 60cm and 2 of 42cm, were named after General of Artillery Karl Becker, who worked on their design.

Aaahhhggh! The guy I got the link from posted abpout it already! Sat up 'til 2 AM last night leeching all the video off panzerlexikon... too bad it's all silent. Wonder if there's an authentic sound-file out there somewhere for that 380mm rocket-gun on the Sturmtiger? It certainly left an impressive *visual* signature.

And how many people watched the Goliath clip and thought, "Ahhh, Hans und Fritz are really enjoying their new Christmas present..." ?
