Crucial battle to create the pocket is the battle for Poltava. Overkill is applied and it was needed.

In front of Moscow I form a pocket at Vyazma and the units encircled in red are also toast. I also gobble some fuel and deny further fort building.

Forming the Vyazma pocket required a lucky battle that I started with questionable odds:

With Leningrad secured I start clearing the enemy off the Valdai.

Freed up troops are marching to Moscow. No loop in place yet to rail them.

In the south my lackluster recon resulted in a bit of a surprise for me, a sortie on my weak flank:

I judge I have to deal with it to avoid complications and cancel the assault on D-Town for now:

View of the southern part of the front.

I slowly advance around Orel with the only objective of being ready for HQBU if the opportunity for gain is there.
FBD4 is moved from Leningrad to start the first loop between Vitebsk and Mogilev.

Turn 12:

Around Moscow I make good progress with a lot of soviet units that can be written off, including the only strong position he had here west of Kaluga.

In front of Kharkov I still at plenty of fuel, enough to do another encirclement:

In the south, capturing D-Town remains a distant dream. The trade off is that I am removing his front sector at Kharkov.

Below my mud goals in the North. A few turns later I find out that is probably retarded due to the supply situation there.

I was a bit too optimistic about the Finnish auto rail repair..

In the air things are going quite decently. Have not received any crippling losses yet, only had to move 2 Ju-88 groups to the national reserve that were depleted.

And finally I decide the time is right for 2 HQBU around Orel. The northern objective is to cut the N-S rail lines out of Moscow. The southern objective is to create a pocket at Kursk or drive on Voronezh, I'll decide during the turn.

More turns another time.

By the way, thus far I have only suffered 2 partisan attacks. In both instances the damage was already repaired, by I assume the RHG commands loaded with Construction Bn's.

Question about supply/rail repair

The below screenshot is from Turn 15. My Question is, how many MP should units be from rail heads at maximum when mud hits?

The Finns in the North east had that location as their goal to anchor the front but they are in the void and it wont get much better in 2 turns. Should I pull them back?
Theoretically, if Sviritsa's port were repaired, would it have been worth to repair the rail encircled in red?

Your screwed basicly, but it doesn't really matter up north, same thing happens to everyone.

Once mud hits STOP moving, make sure all HQ/AB and as many panzers are on converted rail hexes to limit truck damage.

Infantry not moving does not cost much at all but the other units do.

Nice job on crippling his army, but he has slowed you down some.

You strategy looks allot like morveals, going for Moscow and basicly ignoring south.

Thank you Eric, nice to hear.

Turn 13:

In the North I have left quite some strength, a bit too much tbh (should railed a full Corps south), and I am going to use it to roll up his northern line that is facing south west, opposing the Northern flank of my Moscow drive:

At Moscow, I am now ready for the final assault on the city, with significant Red Army units about to be taken out of commission.

I HBQU up the northern Pz Corps. It is obviously situated ideally to attack the city, but Darby seems so strapped for strength that there is almost zero flank security on the north edge of the city. If this remains next turn, I may just go around the city.

As you may remember, last turn I HQBU'ed 2 Pz Corps at Orel. The Northern Corps cuts all the rail lines running south from Moscow. We are now firmly in the void, but I believe :)

The southern Corps is committed to trapping his forces at Kursk. Here I make an unforced error and withdraw the lead division a few hexes, before I move the Southern pincer (the southern pincer was very low on MPs); so I messed up the sequencing and I should have left the decision whether or not to try and close the pocket until after the southern pincer made its moves.

I think there was about a 50% chance I close the pocket if I committed.

Still I am confident that I will get about 70% of those forces trapped.

In front of Stalino I make another unforced error and start moving stuff before really thinking about what to do (big nono).

Let's just say I had tough day at the office and that influenced my play this turn

I convert some hexes instead of doing HQBU, which I think would have been the correct move here. I end up doing an HQBU with only 1 eligible combat unit, as I am desperate to dislodge him here.

South of Z-town I cross the Dnepr with weak forces, to at least put some extra pressure.

The 2 German divisions at Nikolaev are moving to Odessa to shore up the Rumanian Army that is about to be ready to assault the city. Some siege artillery is made available for them. (I spend a lot of AP to make sure that important missions have the needed firepower. For example, the assault Corps in front of Moscow have most StuGs on the Eastern Front to clear the approaches to the city)

Soviet losses have eclipsed 2.5M with a lot of stuff about to be destroyed at Moscow.
Almost 50% of my AFV losses this week are Pz IIs...

I actually receive a report that most of the Pz II losses are because a young Leutnant of a pioneer unit used the pitiful machines to quickly bridge a small river: He had the Pz IIs driven into the river and then had logs put on top of them for the real vehicles to drive across!

I find this excellent use of the Pz II and award him the Ritterkreuz. He clearly cannot believe his good fortune:
