I doubt if there is much interest in the daily workings of carrier strike group's but it's something that I want to learn more about. It started off with me trying a scenario in CMANO with a CSG and failing miserably due to my lack of knowledge. Here is an example of my exceptional knowledge of the intricate workings: "LAUNCH ALL THE AIRCRAFT!" Little did I know how badly that was going to end. Shortly after my predictable failure I started doing some research and it grew into quite an interest. Now my CMANO scenario's are purely based around carrier's and their support ships.

The basics of what I want to achieve is a campaign focused around carrier operations. Unlike other scenario's that focus purely on combat I want to include the training flights, the monitoring of shipping during the deployment and exercises with allied countries. Along with a plausible backstory for some combat later on of course.

I'm wondering if more knowledgeable people can help point me in the right direction for information on standard carrier strike group life. Information I'd like is something along the lines of:
How many flights per day do carrier air wings do if in a non-combat role?
Does one squadron take one day and another the next?
What are some interesting ideas I can implement? An example would be mail transfer from shore to sea and cargo transfers using helicopters.
As a commander of the group who would be the people reporting to you with information? This would be used with the pop up message windows.

I wouldn't be surprised if I'm the only one who finds this kind of scenario interesting but if anyone else does, please let me know.

I can't give much info myself, but I would recommend a scenario to play around with, I think it is a good one to learn carrier battle group operations with.

USS Midway Vs Cuba 1989.

It is in the community scenario pack and is also on the steam workshop.

Basically one scrapped together CVBG against the entire air force and navy of Cuba. I learned a lot, and made some embarrassing mistakes.

This community is fantastic. So very helpful. I've started the campaign, it's got an outline and the first mission is being worked on.

Thought it might be beneficial to other scenario authors if I detail my ideas here to perhaps help someone else. I found Command's ability, or lack of, to currently track unit losses accurately across multiple scenario's was rather frustrating. However that quickly turned in to a challenge to find a way around it rather than a problem. Here's how I'm doing my campaign, hopefully it will be quite different to the normal scenarios.

You take on the roll of commanding a new Task Force based in Japan. It's also based on hypothetical and alternate history, not major changes but enough for artistic licensing. You will not be allowed any unit losses what so ever, that means you must be entirely successful in any combat situations you engage in; as well as any logistical moves you make. Planes running out of fuel and crashing will automatically fail a scenario for example. However, in order to combat the limitations of such harsh problems you face I have implemented a far greater enemy: Diplomacy.

Now I'm not going to give too much of the story away because it's what drives the gameplay choices you make. But I will say this, as your operations of menial and possibly boring (for some) take place, events around the pacific evolve. When you are asked to respond to these threats there will likely be some high stress situations. Because here's what I intend to do:

In a few scenarios where you are not allowed to engage a side but they act hostile, most if not all the time you can guess they will turn hostile. You place your units on alert, prepare to engage and wait. Knowing that soon within the duration of the scenario there's a 90% chance these guys will suddenly turn red and attack. What if however you were in that state of limbo for several scenario's never knowing when they will turn hostile, if ever. Those flights of air intercept fighters that have been on patrol close to your exclusion zone... the destroyer that's been shadowing your course for the last 3 days. All while diplomatic relations deteriorate, then go back up a bit. Then down again. Lull the player in to a false sense of security, then WHAM! Just when you didn't need it. Your aircraft are on maintenance. The submarine is out of range. Your tanker is vulnerable. You just lost two transports because you assigned too many fighters to an area you thought was right... but you were wrong.

Days of planning and playing just gone wrong because you let your guard down. Or did you? Did you request through special actions the help of joint forces? Your allies. Are they too on patrol? You use special actions again to request a change of EMCON but instead are denied due to your low score. Instead you must rely on your allies but they aren't covering the areas you need most covered. Your blind. Next you get a message two vampires detected and they are heading right for one of your high value targets...

I've also been working on some different uses for current missions. Especially "ferry". Spare parts. Logistical transfer using helicopters. Men and women who may fall so ill they must be taken to a land hospital and as such must be removed off the ship within a specified time period. Except you'll only just make it and you'll have some planning to do. Your helicopters are on maintenance and will only just come out on time. Unless of course you use those new Ospreys you have. You won't make it to land unless it's full speed and it needs to air to air refuel 3/4 of the way in. What decisions will you make?

I'm hoping to achieve a level of story telling and interesting gameplay limitations that takes the player on a stressful journey of commanding units. What are peoples thoughts? What do you like? Don't like? Etc.

It sounds quite interesting, I look forward to it.

In the Northern Fury series, I've dealt with casualties several ways within two categories:

1. Maintenance casualties, including battle damage
2. Combat or operational loss

1. Maintenance, I tend to keep minimum 20-25% of a Sqn on Maintenance all the time, I increase this by 10% for every full day of combat, so worst case I've had about 40-50% of a CVW down for maint after 48 hours of flight ops. There have been threads discussing this quite a bit.
- The use of Reserve status with a long delay is also useful to delay the readiness of some AC
2. More tricky, NF is full on combat so 0% loss is not reasonable. I play the game a couple times, listen to the testers then come up with a reasonable number of losses to start the next scenario with - as long as the player has enough to complete the next scenario.
-Replacements- the USN keeps a war stock to replace losses, and that adds some realism getting a replacement in from CONUS.

Story is what makes the scenario if you ask me. Am quite interested.

That's interesting about war stock for losses. Do you know where I can find information on this? Information I'm after then is, say you lose an aircraft (it crash lands, pilot has to eject etc etc) how long would it take to receive a replacement? Say your TF is based in Japan, would it be shipped to Japan, then flown to the carrier?

Well, I've got two short answers: 1) I don't really know. and 2) Depends on the situation.

The USN has VFA Sqns on each coast (at least they used to) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VFA-125

In the NF timeline the 'Rough Riders' held 48 F/A-18s and they did a whole bunch of things like:
-Maintain currency for desk jockeys
-Intake AC from rebuild and rotate AC into the fleet when others needed to go for overalls etc
-Prepare pilots for postings to CVs (those that weren't coming directly from the Trg Sqn)
-Provide fleet replacement

I would guess that the AC would fly to where it is needed and I would be shocked if there weren't a couple airframes already sitting in Japan for this reason.

If there was operational urgency behind the move ~24 hours - Pure guess
If routine probably 72-96 hrs - again a guess

I think there are a couple Tailhook guys who follow the forum, perhaps they could chime in.

What timeframe are you working in? Will you be including the USAF and USMC plus Gator Navy units. I've got some data from 94 that might help and places to look for up to date stuff. PM me if you need it.

I'm working on a 2016 time frame. Mainly due to my (limited) knowledge of units around this time. I think there is a very nice balance of global instability and unit types available. It also features some of the units I am hoping to implement in to the scenarios. The USN, USAF and USMC will be making a presence, yes. I actually had to look up what Gator Navy units were, and yes I will be including LHD's and possibly some amphibious craft, although the amphibious are currently undecided. Need to see how the first couple of scenarios play out.

It's evolved from campaign to a project far larger. Currently I have the majority of carrier operations down along with area of operations. It's quite hard to explain as it's become a live running scenario as opposed to a time limited scenario. I've got about half the Pacific modeled in some form or another at the moment. It's in varying stages of development as I go along.

I think it is meant to be played in real time so hopefully it shouldn't be too CPU intensive
