Ok so now after 4 allied games I can safely say that the AI does nothing to defend Sicily. In each game after I overrun Tripoli I. An immediately run long range transports right into Sicily and size two national morale centers for no losses. Game needs to make it an AI priority for Italy to leave something there and once North Africa falls properly diagnose it as next on the hit list.

ILCK, personally I think it is a mistake to attack Sicily, Sicily falls without much trouble, but when you attack up from the boot of Italy to what I call the leg of italy, it is to easy to defend because of the very narrow land between the two seas, the allies never did penetrate the under belly of Europe because Field Marshall Kesserling built the Gustave line that was penetrated but never collapsed.

I have yet to play the allies so I have no experience from that end, I guess my question would be did the AI put German or Italian units across the middle of Italy after the invasion of Sicily? Were you able to move up the leg of Italy without interference from any Axis units, if the AI put units there than I would say the AI worked fine.

The problem is that taking North Africa and then getting Sicily coupled with some naval losses and Italy will surrender. Frankly moving up the boot isn't that hard vs the AI. The worst thing is that you can just run Anzios up the boot and easily outflank every line.

This is my experience (see AAR no.2). I took Sicily and made a totally rubbish landing in both Calabria and the heel of Italy. The AI correctly stopped my advance - but then, with me going nowhere, they pulled back!

With the fleet gone and Sicily occupied (iirc they only placed 2 or maybe 3 units in Sicily), Italy then surrendered.

Forgive me please ILCK, I do not always asks questions right and thanks for your comment Warspite. Question when you invaded Sicily did the AI add units to Italy to counteract your invasion. Did the AI put units into Italy yes or no, if the AI did, then it is working fine IMO.

In my game, the AI defended Italy in the same way it did in the game Warspite played (See his great AAR thread), it did not defend except for whatever unit happened to be in Palermo at the time.

My units landed directly in Messina with the rest of the island empty. I took the island in two turns (three weeks of game time (two weeks for me and one for the Axis) with the attacking units clearing Palermo with help from air and naval units over a few turns before the land attacks (and prior to the actually invasion) so the unit in Palermo was no longer supplied and no longer entrenched. Use you naval units wisely to blockade ports to reduce supply (see the manual). The unit that landed in Messina moved into the Italian "toe" the next turn with follow up units right behind it.

Unfortunately, I think the game scale is simply to large to be able to have Sicily become the slugfest that it actually was in real life. The Italian mainland has the same faults based on my experience so far. When Italy surrender, the Germans had a line at Monte Cassino, but since the rest of Italy immediately became Allied territory, it was a simple matter to transport troops into Rome and other cities and garrison the rest of the country. The axis units on the defensive line simply became a pocket that needed to be reduced at my leisure (in one game I ignored them watching them lose strength points making useless attacks against my units) from the rear instead of head on. With air and naval units available to attack it was easy to reduce unit strength. I also was not worried about any units being able to reinforce because if the AI spent MPP in here in Italy, that was less they could spend elsewhere, where they may have made a bigger impact.

Personally, I held Sicily for a while - then Italy surrendered once I invaded Turin via southern France. A Special Force unit from the Spanish front marched all the way around the Med coast to Marseilles, secured the docks with no resistance, and allied units started unloading there rendering both Spain and Italy strategically irrelevant.

I agree that the AI's inclination to hold the southern Appenines is usually not sensible against human players, particularly given how the Italy surrender event works.
