At Bataan, everyone's unloaded and departing. My carriers will detour halfway to Formosa and then to east, off Japan's southern coast. Bombers there are hitting San Fernando next turn. My fighters intercepted his Manila raid.

After making their turn east, my two USMC squadrons will probably ferry over to Bataan. I don't like lightening my carrier air, but I don't think he can do much about them.

Hornet arrives in 7 days. Formidable in 11.

I guess the up is jigged with my transports. Betties found them and took a shot. Fortunately, no torpedoes. My carriers are racing back to escort.

He stood down at Sydney this turn, so just my bombardments this turn.

At Rangoon/Pegu, I've been dealing with aggressive sweeps by him with me taking the worst of it. Some rays of light, however as some unescorted bombers make a try.

In China, near Nanyang, he's had a bunch of single units moving around my base there. I've sent out about three groups of 700 AV each to intercept and purge these. The first will attack next turn.

If you want to see any perks for taking Haiphong, see below.

Could you upload a screenshot of the current game score? I am interested to see the army and air loss VPs; also base control.

Next turn, two squadrons of Fulmars should arrive, though I don't expect much from them.

Sydney finally falls, with the door to Melbourne now wide open. Hopefully reinforcements come in before he does.

My ships are clearing the Philippines, with no attacks next turn. My carriers caught up to them. I've offloaded the Marine Vindicators and F4Fs to Bataan on the way out. I can make his resupply to Luzon very difficult right now. No strikes from my planes, though my scouts have claimed hits.

This is what I suspected. He has an enormous VP advantage for this point in the game, and auto-victory is a very real possibility. That is another reason that I advocate a more aggressive approach. Many people do not play for VPs, and therefore they play passively as the allies, assured of their ulimate "victory." I play for VPs. I play to "win" as Japan. That does not mean "winning" the war. I know that I am going to lose the war eventually. It means winning by VPs. That is the reason for the VP system: to give the Japanese player an objective beyond just giving the allies "a good game."

You are forced to be aggressive at this point as the allies if VPs are taken into consideration, and try to keep all further Japanese VP gains at a ratio of less than 2:1 or so. Hence, the Gilberts' campaign is a good idea in my opinion. The lack of strategic bombing in Australia works to your advantage, because none of his gains there are "permanent." It is also why strat bombing a little in Formosa is not a bad idea at this point. He is playing for VPs, and losing industry on Formosa will force him to redeploy there, taking pressure off Australia.

One other thing. He has run his ground forces ragged, and put too much emphasis on the first 3 months of the war. I can tell this by his army losses and looking at his numbers of destroyed and disabled squads in the AARs that you have provided. He is running out of gas and will not be able to stay on the offensive relentlessly for much longer, because he has too many disabled squads in his primary units. Do not give him free time to regroup and reorganize. Be aggressive without being careless.

Transports rerouted to Melbourne ? Or Adelaide ?

I assume the KB is now parked in Sydney Harbor.

Congrats on the move back to the Philippines. That should a wrinkle in the plan for certain.

Your ship losses seems a little high, what can you attribute that too compared to his almost total lack of loses?

Warship losses aren't too out of whack. Maryland, Prince of Wales, Repulse, two carriers, 16 CA/CLs plus a mob of destroyers. KB has been really hard on my transports, sinking many around Australia.

06 March 1942

My PI transports are clearing the country, about 5 hexes W of the east most tip of Luzon. Unless KB is flying north at flank speed, everyone should get back. Maybe I can kill several thousand troops near Iwo like I did on the way in. That was pretty big.

I don't see any obvious moves south from Sydney yet. Maybe I have time. I'm bombing Wagga Wagga next turn.

In China, I'm having success cleaning out his units trying to surround my bases.

More experience for me, I guess.

4 R class battleships departed Colombo to visit Tavoy. I'm routing them so they approach from the north near Rangoon, to avoid any unnecessary air threats.

CL Achilles takes a sub torp off of Auckland and sinks. That sucked.

His sweeps at Rangoon are wearing my fighters down good. I can't seem to get an edge on them. I'll wind up just resting everyone. He hasn't sent bombers that way. I'd say within a week or so, I'll have all my troops gathered at Moulmein. Then I'll push east with a big force and threaten Thailand.

On the other hand. his sweeps at Bataan are getting pounded back. Better quality warriors, I guess.

I was trying to bomb San Fernando, but nobody would fly, so I'm switching them to Clark. I was tempted to have the dive bombers join in, but I want to catch shipping with them. Between the two VP squadrons and my O-47s, I have 360 degree coverage for naval search. The O-47s are covering south, so less range out there.

My transports cleared the Philippines and are about 40% of the way to Iwo. Everyone should get back fine.

In the States and Pearl, I'm getting troops prepped. A bunch are already getting set for the Gilberts, but I'm tasking others with Lunga, Ndini and even Noumea. This is several months out yet, but when the time comes, I want everyone ready.

Good luck with that, buddy.

Always a challenge to plan 6+ months in the future as you might not know where the Japanese may move next and you will have to counter with the forces you were planning to use somewhere else. However fail to plan is a plan to fail.

Mostly quiet otherwise. The reinforcement force is about to cross Iwo Jima.

The UK 44th division and that big nasty South African armored unit will land at Melbourne next turn. The rest of the troops from Diamond Harbor should reach within 8 days or so. Much needed beef for Australia.

My 4 R class RN battleships should reach Tavoy in about 3 days.

Philippines transports are now a couple hexes south of Iwo, heading east. I realized I've nobody prepping for Tarawa, so they're going. I'm half expecting that he has nobody there anyway. One group of xAPs bound back for San Francisco has been kept at Pearl, as I need invasions ships, however primitive for the job.

Troops unloading at Melbourne. A big UK infantry division and the big South African armored unit, packed with Stuarts and Matildas. Melbourne's becoming a feasible backstop now, despite everything else falling.

The KB ?

Any ideas ?

We last opined it was in Sydney Harbor though perhaps it moved on in reaction to Manila, Clark Field ?

Or it sees/ spots festung Melbourne Adelaide and moved further south ?

Or it sees/ spots gaps in the Gilberts and Marshalls and your potential wide open landings there ?

No clue where right now.

Just consulted Intel Monkey. I've been lax looking lately.

One CV sighted a little over a week ago.

More intel on intentions. If he thinks he's going to march straight through Pegu to Rangoon, he's going to be surprised.

I wouldn't worry about Clark he lost 15% against almost nothing for you, let him burn supplies and troops attack you there.

I've built a couple cruiser based surface groups from each TF and will try to catch his carrier. I do have a history of pulling this off, so we'll see.

At, Melbourne, troops continue to unload. The New Zealand troops arrive also bringing these.

-2nd NZ Brigade
-33rd Medium Rgt (arty)
-N Force Detachment
-2nd RNZAF Base Force

Added to this, the currently unloading...

-7th SA Armoured Brigade
-44th UK Division

Bombers there are hitting Whyalla, 1 hex W of Port Augusta. He has more troops in the three hexes E of there also. I can't do much about my forces there, as they're static as are most of the other bases in the south.

Transports are well clear of Iwo now, with nobody spotted. All should be well there. I didn't think I'd run a supply run to Luzon with almost no hits. One AK is wounded, but not bad and can keep up.

Hornet arrived in East US, so it'll be awhile before she gets to Pearl. I had enough dash-2 and dash-3 Dauntlesses in the pool to replace the Helldivers she had on board.

Intel is showing an IJA flak unit prepping for Dacca, in India. Nice try...

Once my Luzon transports are back and fixed, I'll probably kick off the Gilberts fight. I may wait until CV-8 arrives first.

Zuiho is chasing my ships back to Colombo. Both carriers ate torps, and Indomitable is gone. How one little light pissy IJN carrier can cause this much trouble drives me nuts. Both my cruiser forces whiffed trying to intercept. They'll take another shot before departing.

Those SNLFs at Clark are typically used to garrison the atolls in the Gilbers, since they have a small stacking cost and can be combined with other units for a good defensive mix. My guess is that there is not much in the Gilberts at this point.

Kind of a pain filled turn. Lots of ground combat, most of it costly.

My huge mob at Ichang crossed the river and got smacked by a far smaller force. I'll rest and try again next turn.

I'll keep up the attacks on Clark. I can probably win eventually. My bombers are refusing to fly, which is frustrating.

My convoy is north of Marcus. AK Castor met a sub and took a hit. She was hit by air near Luzon before. At 5 kts, I'm not dragging everyone else down to accompany her. I doubt she'll make it, but who knows? If that's my only losses to this mission, I'll be happy.

The RN is straggling their way back to Colombo. My mistake was thinking they were more than they actually were. Most of the BBs will be out for awhile. I'll probably have to send some to Cape Town to recover.

The attack on Ichang shows the defender is (-) supply so it is just a short waiting until you are ready to go again. At Manila is said you were short supplies and probably contributed to the disproportionate outcome.

You do not control the hexside between Clark and Manila, I suspect. He does. Therefore, supplies are not flowing to your forces at Manila. Do you have any transports remaining at Bataan? If you made a small landing at Batangas and moved a unit north into Manila, you would gain control of the hexside between Manila and Batangas, allowing supplies to flow into Manila from Batangas.

Remember, in hexes containing forces from both sides, control of the hexsides entering the hex is crucial. The last side to move units through a hexside controls that hexside, blocking the supply route for the other side. (This also blocks the retreat path and movement of units from that hex through that hexside, since they will only retreat or move along a valid supply path.) The key to the ground combat engine of this game is to master the art of controlling the correct hexsides along a front.

Disaster...

KB did come north, meeting my forces near Marcus Island. Saratoga goes down. Yorktown eats some bombs, but no torps. If unmolested, maybe she'll get back. Kaga eats one bomb and one torp. I'm doubting it's fatal. The disconcerting part is that all of York's squadrons are completely empty of planes now, to the fight is gone. None of my transports got hit, though the accompanying oiler did get sunk. I'm moving everyone NE. Hopefully he still heads west. I don't know if I can shake them, though.

Doesn't look good for the home team. Most of the KB is in good order and it will be a miracle if anything survives. The Kaga is a battle-cruiser convert and is tough she might even be in fighting trim and able to conduct operations as there was no explosions listed for the hits she received. Nice to see a TBD hit with a torp I haven't had that luck in several carrier battles and use them mainly for ASW ops until replaced with TBFs.

Yikes sorry didn't mean to jinx it..

The think about Japanese damage control is we are never sure. The carrier may survive but either way it must be in need of extended repair. Some small consolation.

Land based air must be your critical priority about now I imagine but "careful navigation" will be required.

14 March 1942

Yorktown's damage
93 sys
96 flt
32 eng
81 fire

I was hoping Warspite's sacrifice would let her live, but it doesn't look like it. She's making 1 kt as it is. At this point, carrier ops are pretty much curbed until mid to late 1943. Probably 2 years away, at the rate we're flipping turns.

His ships are about 5-6 hexes east of mine moving NE like mine are. My transports are 10 hexes NW of them, all unseen, so hopefully, they'll all get away. They're routed to pass near the Aleutians at this point. I'm valuing them more than the warships at this point. I'm wondering about his fuel situation with KB, as they probably booked it pretty good to get up there so fast.

At Melbourne, the first group of troops are unloaded. Now unloading are the 2nd British Paras and the Natal Mounted Rifles Rgt. The 6th and 9th Australian Divisions plus the 7th Armoured Brigade will reach Melbourne next turn. My defenses there are credible at this point. Nearly 1,000 AV are currently there and should be boosted nicely soon. With KB running amok, he could have prevented this.

The fight in the countryside, near Ichang goes better this time around.

On the positive side, the KB moving up north has allowed you to save Oz with all of those reinforcements. One question: How are your supply and fuel levels doing in Oz?

Cheers,
CC

Fuel there is over 100k. Supply currently around 60k, but I'm getting convoys out. I can't remember if there's HI in Melbourne, so maybe supply will keep up on its own.

Do you still hold the southern Philippines as you get a lot of reinforcements there, far more than the Northern PI.
