Hi Shonyu, we are happy you are on board to stop the fascicsts. Real life (especially in serious cases) has to be Nr. 1 priority.

Germans are a fine tuned humming machine, with our turn 1 already done. We will continue as a 3 man team but on an ongoing basis will look to recruit a 4th or even 5th member plus reserves.

Would actually be good to have ad hoc reserve players who could take over regular player for turn or 2 (or few turns) if Real Life™ bites someone in butt (happens surprisingly often). That is the downside of multiplayer game.

Yes but it may be unfair on the ad hoc player themselves, first we bring you in and when you are committed we chuck you out? I think when someone goes in they should be allowed to stay in the team, even if it means being a sort of team adviser, deputy commander, Finnish front commander or something. It depends on the person of course. But I think when someone is keen they should be brought in straight away even if it means a bigger team, as when people drop out they may not be around anymore. Just a thought - at the moment we have a deficit rather than surplus.

With a game like this you can't expect a routine of any sort to develop, too many people, too many real life. The idea behind reserve players is they can come in and do just that, The two supreme commanders we have playing this game have mandated themselves to delegate the operational aspect of the game to other people, it could be two or ten. Signing up as a reserve means you could play as little or as much as you want, depending on perhaps a cap of participants per turn ( we don't have that issue, yet )

Both sides leaders will assign their generals with troops and goals each turn and sit back and watch, then try and keep it all together and send to other side. should be fun to watch if we can keep the game interesting.

When you sign up for a spot state if you have a preference of side and how much you would like to play. Even coming in for a couple turns to add some flair would be welcome.

I'd like to add, to all those hesitant to get involved in something like this, IMO the driving forces behind this are a pretty safe bet. Real life notwithstanding. I don't know what it would take to dash P.H's enthusiasm for the game at this point, and Telemecus has displayed some true insight into the hurdles to be encountered getting this many people involved in something not it's not specifically designed for. I'm sure they both want to win, but I get the impression they would much rather see the game be fun.

Telemecus has formated a fairly thorough allocation process for turns that adds an interesting level to the game and I'll urge him to publish his ideas here if we have any longevity with this game. Not sure how/where/who yet, but looking forward to game AAR.

Guys

It looks like Stelteck is joining us - so our commanders TOE is back to 100%. Although we still aim for 120+% and spares in the pool :)

Yes I drew up a sort of pseudo protocol of how to run a multiplayer team, based on thoughts before this game and the problems raised in AARs of previous multiplayer games. I was taking this as a place to road test it and I am sure it can be developed more. It is just a page of text. I had an eye to making it something that others/future multiplayer gamers could use. But as it will probably go through many more changes maybe it would be better to post it up in our common dropbox. There may be many changes the Soviet team can think of too, so it might be better to reach a more road tested final form before posting here (or its own thread)?

Just so I know now whether to turn off auto updates or not what is the rule about versions going forward. We are all on 1.10 beta. Do we upgrade as soon as versions come out, co-ordinate upgrades or stiĉk to this version?

I think it is better to update the game as soon as possible with new version. (For example, as soon as the new version come to Steam).

The thought crossed my mind that there was no reason for another team player side to wait for new people to sign on. Those playing in the existing team game can play in another one. I know I quite fancy being a supreme Soviet commander as well. There are reserves on the team game sign up thread so there would be some changes in participants. Perhaps a 3 player each side game might be more economical?

So far not. However, if there are enough players, they can start a second one, using the experience from the first one. Someone has to take the initiative however. I am myself too busy to participate in another multiplayer game.

The Soviet team are looking for a new commander. If you are interested you would be joining a team of players together running the Soviet side against a team of players playing the Axis side. It is a lower commitment then playing a whole side yourself. And a richer experience as you get to see how others play from the same side, and collaborate and converse on the team operations and strategy. A great way to do your first game against others or use your vast experience!

If you would like to join, or just are interested and want to chat about it, feel free to post here or PM Panzerjaegar Hortlund or myself.

This....is...SO COOL !!

Although it would be even greater with a commander per front for the soviet side, and a replacement officer pool. Also we could add "Hitler" as a player. "Hitler" sometimes goes in a rage and fires his officers, (wich then takes in the replacement pool ). This would lead to injustice ? Of course, and thats how it was during the real war as well. If a player commander piss off Player Hitler, BAM, fired, and put into the replacement pool ( probably never to be back again ).

If one of several commanders piss of Player Stalin BAM, executed, never to be seen again, and pick a replacement pool to replace. This would add a level of realism. Commanders would be changed, tactics and strategies would thus be changed as well as the war goes.

Both leaders of their country would have total power to do whatever the hell they want.

Group Leaders would have to submit their plan to OKH, OKH, would then have to submit to Hitler. Hitler could overwrite everything if he wants or say nothing and let OKH do the game. Player Hitler/Stalin wouldnt actually do anything on the game, it would still be Player OKH and STAVKA doing the moves.

Imagine how great, it would be... if we could get enough serious players, to role play each General, each corps commander would lead their divisions according to their Army group Commanders's orders. Each Army group giving orders base on OKH orders, and OKH orders based on Hitler's directive. ( would be great to have division commander as well, but quite useless )

Then have another 10 players in the replacement pool, just in case someone is being useless, not good at strategy, or just being an a-hole overall, like cheating.

This would need about (keep in mind, this would be to start, during Operation Barbarossa time frame, as Fronts changed a lot during the war ) :

-1 Head of State + 5 Chief Commanders for the Soviet ( Stalin + Zhukov, Shaposhnikov, Vasilevsky, Antonov and Rokossovsky )
-5 Front Commanders - ( Northern Front Commander / North-Western Front / Western Front /South- Western Front / STAVKA reserve )
-4 Army Commanders - Northern Front : 14th Army, 7th Army, 23rd Army,Front Units
-4 Army Commanders - North Western Front : 8th Army, 11th Army, 27th Army, Front Units
-5 Army Commanders - Western Front : 3rd Army, 4th Army, 10th Army, 13th Army ( HQ only ) , Front Units,
-6 Army Commanders - South Western Front : 5th Army, 6th Army, 12th Army, 26th Army, Front Units, 9th Separate army.
With 10 Replacement officer pool ( to be able to replace, and to put into action when new fronts open up. Any reserve, and new armies coming after 22nd June would be commanded by STAVKA Reserve and any Replacement Pool )

-1 Head of State + 5 Chief Commanders ( Hitler, Von Brauchitsch, Halder, Von Leeb, Von Bock and Von Rundstedt )
-5 Group Leaders ( Norway and Finland Axis forces / Army group North / Army group Center / Army group South / OKH Reserve )
2 Army Commanders - Norway and Finland : Army in Norway , Finnish Army
3 Army Commanders -Army Group North : 18th Army, 4th Pz Group, 16th Army /
4 army commanders -Army Group Center: 3rd Pz Group, 9th Army, 4th Army, 2nd Pz Group /
4 army commanders -Army Group South : 1st Pz Group, 6th Army, 17th Army, 11th Army,

With 10 replacement officer pool ( any new armies would be commanded by OKH reserve and any replacement pool )

This would mean a total of :

Soviet : 40 players
German : 34 players

Replacement pool could be use only once so that the Head of State player does not exaggerate and constantly shift people around, altough, the officer being replaced, goes to the replacement pool, in the case of German players. And can be used any time, but only once, so technically, that leaves the German player with 20 officer he can shift around.
And as for the Soviets, the officers being replaced would be shot and wont be able to be used again. Player Stalin will have the right to send 2 of his officers to the gulag, instead of killing them, meaning that he can use them again. But he only get 2.

Role-playing would have to be serious, meaning that players believe themselves to be real commanders, during a real war. This is to maintain order and realism. Player OKH is not there to make friends with Commander Army group Center. He his there to give orders. Army group Center is not there to be friend either, and he wants to see his army go home in one piece, wich could lead to friction, arguing orders, or trying to get one of his army commander fired, but never will he joke about unrelated topics.

This is just so that, with all of these players, this can become a nightmare if nobody is serious. Orders would be sent trough PM. So that nobody can see what is going on unless they are meant to receive the message. If player Hitler wants to send a directive, he will send it trough PM at Player OKH, and player OKH will send them to all Army group Leaders, but the army commanders will never see them ( unless, army group leaders wants to share the information )

If the Information is NOT to be share with anyone but a few, the PM will be titled : TOP SECRET. And only those named in the documents will receive the information.

Exemple :

Telemecus who plays Players Hitler, sends a PM to Lictuel who plays Player OKH

The title would be :

(HITLER) TOP SECRET Directive No. 21 "Plan Barbarossa"

Content would be :

18th December 1940
The Fuhrer and Supreme Commander of the Armed force
OKW/WFSt./Abt.L(I)
Nr. 33 408/40 g.Kdos Chefsache
Top Secret

Directive No 21
Operation Barbarossa

The German Wehrmacht must be prepared to defeat Soviet Russia in one rapid campaign, even before the war with England has been concluded.... etc etc etc...
You and I will be responsible to figure out how to procede in the plan, and so we should talk about what avenue we want to take. Personally, I will give you the bigger picture and you will decide the rest by yourself.

I want Army Group North to Rapidly advance on Leningrad.
I want Army Group Center to rapidly advance on Moscow
I want army group South to rapidly advance on Rostov.

Norway and Finland are not to move until we get close to Leningrad.

I want the priority for all Army group commanders to be destroying Red Army HQs as much as possible, without slowing them too much.

Or could be

The German Wehrmacht must be prepared to defeat Soviet Russia in a slow but surely advance, even before the war with England has been concluded... etc etc etc...
You and I will be responsible to figure out how to procede in the plan, and so we should talk about what avenue we want to take. Personally, I will give you the bigger picture and you will decide the rest by yourself.

I want Army Group North to Capture Riga creating a front line from Riga to Daugavpils, to army group Center and wait for further orders,
I want Army Group Center to Capture Smolensk , and connect a stable frontline with Army Group North, and South and wait for further orders.
I Want Army group South to Advance to Cherkossy and establish a stable frontline from the Crimea to Cherkossy, to Army Group Center and wait for further orders.

END OF LETTER

Then OKH and von Brauchitsch would come up with the details of what exactly they want Each Army group to do by PM.

For exemple, OKH would send a PM to Panzerjaeger Hortlund who plays Player Army Group North.

Title would be :

OKH 22nd june Orders

Content would be :

Desk of OKH
Hortlund, your orders are to advance to Riga and create a frontline from Riga, to Daugavpills, to connect with Army Group Center and wait for further Commands.

In order to do so, I want you to Send 4th Panzer Groups to Daugavpills as fast as you can, try not to engage your panzer divisions so as to save as much tanks as possible.
16th Army will proceed to X town and 18th Army to Riga. Understood ?

END OF LETTER

To wich, Army group North would respond either yes, or no, or " ARE YOU MAD, I WONT SEND MY CORPS TO THEIR CERTAIN DEATH" or " I dont think we should separate the panzers from the infantry !! Me and my old ways know better than that, Iv got more experience than you little one ! Iv played this gam...I mean, Iv fought in world war 1 before you were even born !! "

To wich the Army Group north player will then send his letters to his army General :

AGN - 22nd June Orders

18th Army General, you are to advance to Riga and wait further command. You will create a frontline along the West Dvina from Riga. Go as far as you can, but leave a maximum of 5km ( or one hex ) per division ( or, you are to leave no space at all between your division )

END OF LETTER

To wich, 18th Army general, would then look at the map, look at his division, plan his moves, and send his move back to Army group North. Army group North would then collect all the moves of his generals, and send them back to OKH. OKH will then look at all the opening move (1st turn of Operation ), and send them to Hitler.

The first turn of every operation can be contradicted by OKH and Hitler. Wich will then decide by themselves and do the turn. To the surprise of the Army Group Leaders and Army Generals. wich will then have to deal with it on second turn. Every other turn of the operation ( wich is, until they reach their objective ) CANNOT be changed by OKH. Although Hitler, will have the right to change 2 Division's movement if he wants until the end of Operation.

This is to simulate Hitler getting into people's business. But after that, until they reach Riga, 18th Army will be free to do as they please, the move they want to do at 100%.

Each General can ask to their Army Group Leaders, what are the objectives of their neighbors if they want to. It is up to Army Group leaders to decide if they want to say or not.

Each decision that Army group leaders take, CAN be argued to OKH if there is constant arguing. and OKH will then take a decision. This is to simulate conflicts between officers. If OKH is constantly being harassed by un-important stuff like that, he can petition Hitler to get this army general fired.

Hitler is the only one who can decide who gets fired.

At wich point, a replacement pool officer comes in. ( this is just a player that will often check his mail in case he his being called upon ) Once he his part of the game, he will then be made aware of his orders, and be given a map.

THE MAP

OKH will hold the map to himself. He his the one who makes the move and controls the game.

Hitler will ask OKH for maps. So Hitler will probably ask for the WHOLE picture, the whole area of the game. Then ask for a closer look on Army group North sector, he can ask pictures of troops casualties screen, railway damage, anything the game can offer. He can ask a picture of a very small area as well, you know, anything. Hes ****ing Hitler.

Army Group Leaders will have access to their area, they can ask whatever map they want, its up to OKH to either give them the information or not. Group Leaders will then give a smaller picture of the area of their army corps and their surrounding area. Army generals can also ask for whatever map they want, if Army group leaders wants to give it to them.

Why would Army group leaders or OKH refused to give pictures if ask you might wonder ? Simply because the Army General might not want to do the move he his ask to do if he knows the bigger picture. He might think its a bad move or anything like that. Although, if All Germans players wants to work together, then they can share ALL the maps to anyone, that is their business. If Player Hitler falls on a player who wants to do war his way, he might tell TOP SECRET orders to OKH that he shall NOT give ANY picture to anyone apart from their own area. to minimise arguing orders.

PROPAGANDA AND MEDIA
There could also be a player on each side, playing the media and propaganda. Meaning there will be a thread open on the public forum for EVERYONE to see, the opposing army, the general public who are not part of the war, open to anyone.

And the Propaganda part will be orchestrated by X player, under the directive of Hitler. Say the Germans just encircled 100,000 soviets. Than Hitler would go see MEDIA player and tell him : Hey, I want this to appear in the news 9 and give him the proper pictures, and statistic. Then Media player would write a small ( or big ) text about how, the Germans are completely annihilating the Soviet and that ( Insert soviet army general name ) was so bad that he let all of his armies being encircled and the german army's moral is boosted and are sure to win a quick victory.

But if ever, the germans got defeated badly, and saw 35,000 of their troops encircled, than Player Hitler go see PROPAGANDA PLAYER ( wich is the same player as media ) and tell him : Hey, modify those numbers, lets just write that 5,000 got captured and the rest escaped. Oh and if you could create a meme about a red bear being crushed to pieces by planes and publish it, it would be great.

So as to mimic the propaganda posters of WW2 and the censored press. And the enemy would have access to that...

Well... Im getting ahead of myself but basically this is what I was thinking about...It could be ****ing great !!

Some good ideas Neogodhobo. I have doubts how this will play out in reality though, as people need to be online/available all the time, or the turn will take 2 weeks for completion. IIRC, there is an organisation called "Megagames" in the UK which does such things, but with all wargamers locked in one big room for one day :)
