The invasion bonus will be over at the end of March. This presents the Allies with some opportunities. Huge sections of the DEI have not yet been taken by the Japanese. The central PI hasn't yet been touched other than taking the landing beaches and moving to Clark Field and Manila. No attacks have been attempted. The PI troops are filling out, gaining some experience and supply is decent at about 60k for the three Allied bases. I'm not building forts in order to save supply.

So, this brings me to the current operations around Sumatra. I see Singapore as the key to everything the Japanese do in the SRA and if they don't get it before the invasion bonus ends it really holds back any second level plans. In this case it might even hold back their initial historical expansion.

Singers is just above 10k supplies. I'll have to reduce usage for the next weeks and hope I can get some more in. He's bombarding virtually every day but luckily our AV is not going down and the fatigue and disruption are staying very low. I've got good leaders here so that should help.

Reinvesting Sumatra is something I've never considered in previous games, either on the Allied side or in defending as the Japanese. I'm interested now not only because of Soviet activation. The loss of the USN CVs in the DEI and subsequent bombing of oil has led to the deconstruction of the KB as a deterrent to early Allied defence of this area. If the KB patrolled off of Java and Sumatra, if the IJN were circling Palembang and Singapore even more often than they are now, what I'm doing would be impossible.

Lowpe is a very opportunistic and innovative player, and he's tried a lot of new things in this game. My sacrifice of Force Z to hit the fields at Balikpapan and then nail the oil has led to a cat and mouse game around the oil producing regions from Magwe to Shikuka. KB fighter units have been landed and sent to defend the oil, the Allied 4Es have shifted based on opportunity to hit it where they can, and now I'd like to do something even more bold; take the most important base on the map outside the Home Islands.

I've got four Aussie and a few Indian brigades plus a good Indian division (70exp) on the way to Sumatra along with a lot of AA and support troops. He's got his best units tied up at Singers, in the PI, re-invading Sakhalin and trying for Burma (and now halted at least temporarily at Lashio). Having played Japan a bit I know that there is not a lot of leeway to send reserves if something stalls in one area. Neither of us is concerned with the Pacific much at this point South of the Aleutians, so the DEI and the North have become the battlegrounds. If all of this gets onto Sumatra, can he bring a few divisions needed to really hold, and safely land them at Palembang, before we can march and take the base?

Strategically I know I cannot control the air after 6/42, but I can locally now, especially with the P-38 group around, so I need to push hard to gain control of an area and then hold with a combination of plentiful Allied supply, engineers and AA. Dug in Allied troops are hard to dislodge in DBB. If I can even shut down Palembang fields while holding Singers I don't even need to fully take the base. Just bomb the oil and watch the Japanese economy wither. He can't make Franks and Georges if there isn't enough HI to feed their factories or supply to furnish and fly them.

So the title of this AAR is no coincidence. From the beginning the good choices I've made have been about squeezing and disrupting the Japanese economy.

Well that was kind of the point of the action around Sakhain and then the Aleutians grab. I knew I needed to keep him away from Adak for the turn of Spring, and the para drop on the riles offered just enough of a threat over there to ensure things would be clear for a week or so. Now I've got Adak, Anther two bases in my sights and he has to make a decision whether it's worth it to send the mini-KB to clear the area or not.

Down South a lot of ships must be in the yards because he has been able to dominate when I've tried things before. Now the action is sporadic and we're giving almost as good as we take. Some more coming soon, and if we keep Singers solidly that also gives a great naval base and repair yard right in the middle of the action.

I fear I have about a week or two before the full hammer falls around Palembang. It is a mortal threat for Japan. But if my troops land can he bring in enough to stop the cascade? Not sure. I know we can grab Djambi, but Palembang is x3 so if he gets even one full ID in there it'll be tough to take. Need to close the fields first as the main priority.

I tried to sneak some AMc and YMS to Palembang, and since my search didn't show any big SCTFs around, thought we might make it in to clear a few mines. The Takao and DDs ruined that effort, so I'll have to wait for some DMS coming in from OZ to do this job.

Might have sunk I-162 trying to intercede at Benkolen. Nice!

Oscars and zeros jumped the only two bombing runs I left on for the 4th. I felt danger and just didn't get to these to turn them off, and of course those two out of the many I had going were chosen to hit.

The only good thing to see here is that he's still flying Claudes in combat!!

At Palembang the CAP was tested with a P-39 sweep. They didn't do badly, but man I wish I'd have sent the whole shebang today. Light CAP here. Gotta get the 4Es in action soon before it's beefed up.

The Japanese shrugged off the 1:5 result of a few turns ago and got a 1:1 at Lashio this time. Could be trouble. Still slowly adding elements of the Burma division from Myitkyina. I hope the units here will get fatigued and wear down after all of these attacks. Supply also has to be a concern since none of it can come through Rangoon by sea yet. If I can slow this until another Chinese unit can be brought in it could hold.

Lost PortSwetenham on Malaysia. I still have one base in mid-Malaysia which I'll now send more troops and supply to reinforce. I need a small CAP airbase here and it'll be awesome to have a foothold in case I can ever bring in a brigade by sea to wreak some havoc while all of the IJA is in Singapore.

Up in the North the ground war is still going our way. The fort at Koutou is about done. The brigade at Alexandrovsk will be destroyed soon as well. The IJA is challenging though in the area South of Ulan Bator, taking some small bases with small units. If I start seeing base forces and engineers coming up the roads I'll take some interest. For now this is not a threat. Ulan Bator, Ondorhan and other bases in the area are building forts and have some defending units in situ. A brigade is arriving soon up here and a few more units in the next month, so unless a lot more is following on, we've got this covered. I've got recon in the area to check periodically on the approaching roads.

The night starts with a big mix-up in the approach to Palembang. I had hoped to hit the Takao TF lurking here last turn and instead found two BBs!!!

Lowpe wins again for surprise, but at least they didn't sink anything. The Exeter will have to head back for some repairs in OZ. I'll keep the other two CAs in theatre with only minor dents.

Next up CL Dragon and company wipe up on two IJN DDs, sinking Urukaze and putting Akigumo in danger, likely sinking as well. I'm starting to see lots of old DDs escorting good CAs and BBs, so the DD losses are starting to take a toll I think.

The Dragon and company eventually run into both Abukuma and the CA Chikuma TF, which sinks Dragon and a few DD. Two make it back.

After that the small CL Sumatra TF does find the Takao, unfortunately, and then the BBs. Yuck.

A few more interactions with Chikuma, Takao and the BBs ends up in lots of losses. Don't they ever run out of ammo??

This is not a successful turn for the ABDA naval assets, but strategically does open the door for some opportunities while the IJN capital ships replenish. The RN is about to send in the big guns and hopefully make a run with supply to Singers. Fingers crossed.

Sweeps and strikes at Palembang recommenced. The P-38s led the way taking out a few Nates and the 4Es followed. Not many hits, likely due to weather, but every little bit helps. Oosthaven is softened up by the 2Es and the small Dutch unit (bought out and transferred from Benkolen) is landed easily. A DA will hopefully take the base tomorrow. For me this is huge and will allow the Indian division to land easily, and then potentially rail to Praebemolei (sp., base next to Palembang).

The Japanese try at Wenchow again but get only a 1:2. Light losses on both sides.

Another attack at Lashio only gets a 1:2 but disablements are higher on the Allied side, unfortunately.

The pounding of the Guards Mixed Brigade continues at Alexandrovsk while the fortress at Koutou finally falls.

Most interestingly, the Japanese decided to defend forward of Tsitsahar and an advance tank unit supported by arty is thrashed South of Hailar. It looks like something else is moving up the road, so we may have the opportunity to hit some more Japanese troops in the next hex. It's rough woods, so x3, but doesn't look like an army here. I'll be curious to see what he's bringing so far up and against 1850 AV of powerful Soviet infantry, tanks and arty.

Big bombardment at Alexandrovsk. I'll have to move out the fighters. There will come a time when I can't protect these bases from air attack due to a combo of sea power and air strength this close to Japan. Still, it's good territory, so if I can kick out the Japanese unit, send in some supply and hold tight it'll be tough to take.

Shikuka on the other hand is not something I can hold. A devastating bombardment hits the troops and planes. This convinces me I need to move out soon.

As troops at alexandrovsk grind away we have a setback against the fortress near Heiho. Two garrison units hold off two strong Soviet divisions and we now have 150 squads disabled to deal with. Troops are crossing here in a few days, so I need to wear down these units to ensure that isn't a disaster.

Near Hailar, on the road to Tsitsahar, a lone Japanese division aims to block progress of the Soviet army. It doesn't look like any more is close by on the way, but since this has obviously just arrived here and won't have forts, we hope to blow it out of the way quickly and continue into the clear hexes to the South.

The IJN sent in Haruna with only two escorts to Merak on the night of the 8th. They got away with it and only lost 1 DD, the Ushio, which hit one of the 300+ mines there. The TF didn't get far enough to tangle with the 6inch CD guns. Asagiri went with Ushio and left Haruna to fight on her own. The RN CAs tangled with her but couldn't land a solid blow, and she amazingly avoided the several decent Dutch subs and USN S-boats in the area. Maybe tomorrow!

Shikuka is invaded by Japanese troops in a massive TF. The Soviet Brigade is shattered by the supporting fire, and the base will fall quickly. I hope the resources and fuel collecting here are destroyed in the attack.

This is a good move, and I didn't consider how vulnerable Shikuka is to bombardment. Noted. I hope to repay the favour in the future.

On the ground the first attack against the 14th division near Hailar gets a 1:2 but destroys a tank regiment and gets roughly even losses to both sides. This helps the Soviets of course. Disruption is low and we'll go again after a day or two of bombardment.

It's funny sometimes doing the AAR and realising I totally missed something in the combat report earlier while doing the turn. I thinkI got lucky here (so far) since I had no idea something left a few underseas gifts near Batavia. Kortenaer disables one, but how many are there?

Abukuma hits Sabang.

At Palembang more fighters are added to the CAP and the first sweep gets hit hard. The second evens up the score and then the bombes started in. The 2Es got through okay but didn't do much, and the 4Es followed on well. Later straggling 2Es were knocked down by remaining CAP as the P-38s didn't arrive until late, likely due to the low CAP. It's a decent start, and the Nates really suffered.

Only the 4Es will hit tomorrow.

Oscars Vlad today, which is a bit surprising. The smaller MiG unit is here, but that is enough to turn this into a bad idea for the IJAAF. They do hit a few I-16, but on the day the Soviets come out ahead and lose only one pilot, which is key. The MiG jocks get stronger, which is also important.

Netties find and launch against a troop transport TF and some supply ships bound for the Sabang area. Damn! I though they were too far out to risk setting them out here for fear of the CAP at Sabang. The avoided the trap and went for the topped up transports, sinking 2 xAPs and 2 xAKs plus a Flower class corvette. My bad here. Good move by Lowpe.

Shikuka falls back to the Japanese. A short lived ownership of all of Sakhalin, but at least it led to the destruction of two big IJA brigades and the loss of several other units plus a few ships lost and some CVs damaged. Soviet losses are light, and the one thing they have a lot of are infantry squads, so the 2nd Rifle brigade will rebuild. It sucks to lose the Cats here, but it's the price for getting US troops to central Manchuria to turnsole bases red, white and blue!

The 10th opens with more carnage in the area around Palembang. Houston has seen a lot over the past few months, and her night exp rating is at 73. If any ship can handle an engagement with an IJN CA it's her, or so I thought. She and CL Mauritius with 3 DD run into Takao with 1 DD and in the first engagement she take some solid hits to the hull. Takao takes a few to the upper works and is on fire after the engagement. They find each other again and this time Takao get the better of it in spite of being outnumbered. Houston is left staggering after three more direct hits while Mauritius is on fire after three herself. Takao takes 6 shots and Yakaze five, but neither is belching deep black smoke.

Somehow both the Houston and Mauritius survive and move back toward Batavia although they were set to run to Singers. One DD, the Norman, keeps on track though and after a short sighting of a DD and a TB in the channel near Muntok, she blunders into an empty amphib TF. Norman savages a PB and a big xAP, the Brazil Maru. After the engagement a Dutch sub, the KXVI, sends in two fish to finish the job.

The 4Es go for Palembang and do a decent job against a weakened CAP today. With clear skies over the fields they hit 36 times even though they arrive before sweeps, also downing a few fighters themselves.

The sweeps then arrived and chipped away some more. We did lose a P-38 which is always a sad moment. Overall a good result though and it should put even more pressure on the Japanese here. I predict some more groups arriving tomorrow to defend, possibly from the nearby mini-KB. I'll hold off on striking tomorrow and prepare for a sea bombardment.

The Japanese have been working on Wnchow regularly from the air and bombarding from the ground. They''ve tried a number of DAs and worn down the defenders significantly. Today they tired again after days of prep and got a 1:1 but with more significant losses to the Japanese divisions again. This is a grinder nd could continue to hold for a while it seems!
