Air Losses

Not a happy screen to look at considering the replenishment rate for 2Es is quite low, but then again, this is the target they could hit and they've accomplished 90% of the job already. After this there will be plenty of time to rest and get these re-organized and fleshed out.

The A6M2 is now listed at 640 destroyed, which has to be high.

I've sent half of the 4Es to India to aim at Magwe oil. The night strikes had no effect yesterday, but I'll see them going to see what happens. There is a big CAP there of about 50 A6M2. I'm also going to start prepping a few units for Moulmein!

Looks like 40% of those A6M2 losses are due to Ops - which suggests he has been using them a lot for LRCAP or escort for strikes at max fighter range. The losses may not be greatly exaggerated.

Whoah Nelly!! In spite of the rollover saying Palembang was 98 percent damaged last turn, with a 9/10 recon reading, the base suddenly fills with an angry swarm of zeros and oscars!!

The cursor rollover shows the % damage to Airfield Services, not the Runways. So he will have issues with maintaining his aircraft and getting them ready for multiple sorties in the turn, but he can launch if the runways are clear enough. After a few days a lot of his aircraft will be unserviceable and you can bomb the heck out of them.

I'd thought it was a combination average of the two together. Hmmmmm. I know it's subject to FOW but usually when I see 98% there will be no flights that day. So, I'll just have to be more careful.

I agree, it looks like he's wearing them out, and those airframes are not durable, so when in combat, and with what seem to be not the top pilots they began with, they suffer more than I'd expect. I can't wait for the hurricane Iic to arrive. Of course the Tojo will be around soon too and that will change the picture dramatically. The Tojo will hurt us, but it's range limits it in an offensive role.

The A6M line doesn't get remarkably better until the A6M5, and that should still be a little ways off. Oscars are Oscars. It's the George and Jack and Frank that will change the air war.

That is one reason I'm pushing so hard now. With DBB settings for AA, the Japanese will struggle to do anything with their air superiority if we have a lot of territory with a lot of good AA defending it.

Well, this is the turn when we both happened to go all-in on the same hand!

Fireworks aplenty, and although it's costly, I think the Allies came out the better for the risk today.

it started with our 3 USN CAs tackling 4 IJN DDs near Palembang. He seems to always lead with DDs and manage to get them in from of the big boys. This time it didn't really work out, as Shiratsuya took the brunt of the 8 inch shells and went under, with only one hit on DD Le Triomphant to bother the Allies.

I'd set up the TFs so that the SCTFs would react to protect the bombardment TFs, but I'm actually glad now it didn't work completely as planned, since the USN hit the IJN CAs first and showed their quality and accumulated experience in this one. These are battle hardened crews, veterans of the long battle for the DEI, and they held their own against superior and better opponents in this first decisive battle of the night.

John Shaffroth led the USN through this and crossed he T here to inflict catastrophic damage on CA Tone, from which she would not recover.

Le Triomphant unfortunately also takes some direct hits form the IJN 20cm guns, and ends the battle floundering.

Next up the USN CAs, low on ammo, meet the IJN big boyd agin, with disastrous results. One 8inch shot does land on Chikuma, leaving her in trouble. So it's two down for each side at this point, really.

The RN CAs get into it next and cripple the Kinugasa with 6 hits. The ships from Batavia hit the DDs next and sink Nenohi before moving into Palembang for a daytime bombardment.

In the final act of the night phase, the RN CLs deliver a solid bombardment at Palembang, which makes me feel better after the USN didn't make it.

In the day phase limited air strikes go for some of the surviving DDs. The Yamagumo takes a 250kg bomb and Albacore's try to finish her, but can't get a hit.

The Canberra TF does make it to Palembang for a daytime bombardment, and luckily no IJN CVs are left in range to cause trouble.

Sweeps and limited troop bombings hit Palembang without resistance as the fields are closed.

To close out the day here in the DEI, troops shock at Palembang and achieve a 2:1, dropping forts to 0 and setting up to take the base at will in the next few days. I'll rest them tomorrow as the disablements and fatigue are high. No hurry here!

This shows at least 3 CAs went under, but it's possible that with the Dave's a Pete's also listed, all four might have been sunk. Subs will hunt regardless ,and any that are still afloat will have trouble making Singkawang.

Ship Losses

The toll for the day swings heavily in the Allies favour, with 3-4 CAs sunk and another 4-5 DD sunk for 2 CAs and 1 DD.

i hate losing the battle hardened, very experienced Chester, Chicago and Le Triomphant, but for this price it's well worth it. He may have to begin committing his last available BBs, which I'd welcome in this sub kill zone triangle from Singers to Singkawang to Palembang.

This is a major turning point where it looks like the Allies could control this area and link Java to Sumatra to Malaya with a somewhat secure LOC along the coasts.

OTOH, those are among the lowest VP Allied CA's. Have to agree that the cost was worth it. (And the IJN must be getting low on DD's!)

Chikuma was showing HF/HD after the first four hits, and you added 13 more. I can't see any way she could survive that. Bravo Zulu! You are hereby proclaimed Supreme Admiral of the Kitchen Sink! Acronym SAKS ...

While low in VP and of course not the best surface combatants the allies wield, they have been through it a number of times already and had achieved night fighting skills in the high 60s with day experience in the high 70s. Against the IJN those crew experience levels are key early on, so even better ships arriving soon will have to work their way into effectiveness with bombardments and (hopefully) successful skirmishes.

The IJN should be really starting to hurt for DDs now. A lot were committed last turn, and although only half were sunk, a few others were seriously damaged and should require a trip to the yards i neither Saigon, Hong Kong or all the way back to the HI. I may send a few subs to guard the ports with shipyards just for fun.

Tone and Chikuma both seem a bit more fragile than the other modern CAs. I've not noticed that before, but they certainly took a lot od damage early in these battles. Although maybe they were just "in the front of the battle line" as considered by the game and when Shafroth crossed the T they took the majority of hits.

I agree I think she's out. We'll see though. Myoko surprised the hell out of me by surviving 4 torpedoes and making it to a port!

I've gotten the replay and combat report back but not the turn file yet for the 7th. Looks like a quiet turn with the IJN survivors slinking back to Borneo and the Allies going to work one last time on Palembang oil. Dolphin sends 4 fish toward Hatsuhara, but none hit (or explode).

Today's strikes should bring the oil to the intended target of less than 100. I also tried a small 4E strike on Miri since recon showed some ships in port there. No luck, but got a great piece of info when "Carrier support unable to supply air cover ... ." So the CVs are still around, and the fighters from Palembang are likely back on them but not flying CAP (or not a multi-hex range CAP anyway).

Up North the Soviets take Arshaan with ease. Some troops will remain to mop up and hold the base, beginning to build some forts. I'll not pursue the units that were booted out unless they're in the way somehow or sit aggressively next to the base.

Heiho is bombed again. All other air units stand down.

In the CBI areas Wenchow and Lashio were both attacked as well. they both held again!

Wenchow still looks strong, with the IJA taking 150 infantry squads destroyed or disabled to only 39 for the Chinese. They get a leader (+) which may be due to the best Chinese generals I could find going into the 3rd War Area and 25th Group Army there.

At Lashio the IJA only gets a 1:3!! They had 111 infantry squads destroyed or disabled. Also with a leader (+). The Burma Corps making a difference I guess. Another 1/3 Corps is marching from China, just having been bought out, and will join this group to add another 150AV in about 2-3 turns. After that I'll be air transporting a few other small Chinese units in, plus hopefully some more engineers. I'd like to keep this base now.

A week into April and things are looking good right now in the DEI for the Allies. The fall of Palembang is imminent. We hold Singapore and another small but critical base on Malaya. Small units are prepping to retake the islands between Sumatra and Borneo, and a few small garrisons are holding out against Japanese advances in spite of daily bombings, like Manado.

The plan is to move from the West and take what is possible back now before air supremacy is lost. I also have an idea about the PI, but that is far away still. It would be amazing to find a way to achieve the holy grail of Allied play; the resupply and reinforcement of the PI.

I'm getting a little ahead of myself here though. Right now I'm interested in this picture. It shows the mini-KB at Miri without any fighters aboard. As I'd thought, these continue to be landed and used as LBA, which is at this point making me very happy.

The oil at Palembang is down to 154 (746). I'll be attacking only sporadically until my follow on troops arrive in a few days.

At Palembang combined raids take out more oil, hit a few troops and keep some new damage accumulating on the airfield and the troops on the ground get a 1:1 with good damage to the IJA forces. One A6M2 destroyed as a bonus.

The real excitement for this turn is the invasion of Attu Island. A sneaky flotilla of very valuable AP/AK/AMC is chaperoned into place by 4 USN BBs, which supply a crushing bombardment during the night. Troops land with the help of Allied gunnery, taking out another 15-20 IJA squads.

All are landed in good order, the BBs avoid I-boats near Amchitka, and the troops have plenty of supply to play with. Since this base has been bombed periodically I don't think forts will be high, so the regiment here may fall to the Marines in a few days.
