April 12, 1942 Subs went wild for both sides this turn. We both seemed to flood the area around Muntok and they hit pay dirt as we both also sent unescorted merchants through. Lowpe's seem to have come from Muntok, and ours were ostensibly guarded by two KVs that instead went ahead to Singers. Three Allied 14 knots xAKs went under. Not terrible, but kind of a waste. We seemed to get 2-3 Japanese counterparts, so not all bad. Also good info on two BB TFs in the area. I decided to post all subs attacks because it was kind of astounding to watch how many there were. The USN also must have launched 40 torpedoes during the turn, with literally 6 salvoes by Tambor and not a hit! The mini-KB moved in and launched strikes against shipping around Toboali, with one Kate group breaking through LR CAP to sink two xAP and one DM. The CAP did get to the bombers on every occasion, and shot down a good number of escorts, but these are the high EXP KB pilots for real and also take out some P-40s and P-39s. I'll be interested to see where the mini-KB goes next, but a heavy CAP is up over all other shipping for tomorrow. Muntok does fall and up North the regiment at Attu is destroyed completely. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR April 12, 1942 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Submarine attack near Muntok at 50,89 Japanese Ships xAK Zinzan Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage Allied Ships SS S-35 xAK Zinzan Maru is sighted by SS S-35 SS S-35 launches 4 torpedoes -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Submarine attack near Muntok at 50,89 Japanese Ships xAK Yomei Maru, Shell hits 1 Allied Ships SS Tambor, hits 1 xAK Yomei Maru is sighted by SS Tambor SS Tambor attacking on the surface Murphy, J.W. decides to submerge SS Tambor due to damage -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Submarine attack near Muntok at 50,89 Japanese Ships xAK Yomei Maru Allied Ships SS Sargo xAK Yomei Maru is sighted by SS Sargo SS Sargo launches 2 torpedoes -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Submarine attack near Muntok at 50,89 Japanese Ships xAK Koyo Maru Allied Ships SS L-14 xAK Koyo Maru is sighted by SS L-14 SS L-14 launches 2 torpedoes -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Submarine attack near Muntok at 51,89 Japanese Ships xAK Nanko Maru, Torpedo hits 1, heavy damage Allied Ships SS KVIII xAK Nanko Maru is sighted by SS KVIII SS KVIII launches 2 torpedoes -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Submarine attack near Palembang at 49,90 Japanese Ships SS I-160 Allied Ships xAK Barossa, Torpedo hits 1, on fire xAK Barossa is sighted by SS I-160 SS I-160 launches 2 torpedoes at xAK Barossa -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Submarine attack near Muntok at 51,89 Japanese Ships xAK Yomei Maru Allied Ships SS S-40 xAK Yomei Maru is sighted by SS S-40 SS S-40 attacking on the surface Lucker, N. decides to submerge SS S-40 due to damage -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Submarine attack near Muntok at 49,89 Japanese Ships SS I-155 Allied Ships xAK Bintang, Torpedo hits 1, on fire xAK Bintang is sighted by SS I-155 SS I-155 launches 4 torpedoes at xAK Bintang -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASW attack near Muntok at 51,89 Japanese Ships BB Mutsu CL Nagara DD Shigure DD Wakatake DD Asanagi DD Oite Allied Ships SS S-40 SS S-40 is sighted by escort S-40 bottoming out ....
