Nov 13, 1944

A good day for the Allies. The BBs hit Bangkok hard and get about 40+ planes on the ground. This sets up the CAP later to defend nearby transports and also renders Bangkok inoperable for strikes the next day.

The transports unload at Chanthaburi, near Bangkok, and the IJN Vals sortie. The CAP treats them roughly, with 19 Vals and 7 escorting A6M3 lost on the day.

Troops get one hex closer to Cam Ran Bay, and the two armor units at Chanthaburi will head out tomorrow to cut the rail one hex out of Bangkok. The US ID is nearing Bien Hoa. The CVs will move to Kompong Trach to replenish and refuel, and transports will begin to load for a Philippine resupply effort.

It looks like there are some decent troops at Kompong Chang. I'll sit tight and wait for another ID at Pnom Penh, and move up from Chantaburi. Hopefully this will get another group of IJA units slightly encircled.

It looks like the Val strike came from Battambang, a level 2-3 field on the rail between Bangkok and Kompong Chang. I've got recon heading there tomorrow, and have some CAP moving into Chathaburi.

Congrats on the coup at Chanthaburi!
I keep marvelling at the logistics that enables you to replenish BBs and CVs at newly conquered Kompong Trach already and also load troops for an invasion in the Philippines! I have no idea how you can keep the supply chain following your rapid-fire invasions. I am guessing that playing the Japanese side for so many campaigns has given you a skill for operating on the razor's edge - well done!

Well, thanks, but it's really just being single minded in this case, I think. Not sure how another player would have set things up if they kept Singers as the Allies in this stage, but all I've thought about since it became secure is working off of that success and being able to take advantage of any opportunities quickly.

I've also committed sacrilege by bringing the entire USN Pacific command and SW Pacific to Indochina!

(I even have two MacCarthurs, as the one in Manila is still there, and the one that arrives with SW Pacific is with part of that unit still in Singers).

As for logistics, that is the name of this game, and so I was already thinking in those terms from day one. I knew I wanted a lot of supply to move through Cape Town to OZ, and that led to an easy route to the DEI as well. Now every new unit arriving in CONUS heads to East Coast and on to Cape Town. I'll be completing the first Marines soon with the last regiment, now in Colombo.

If I can get there, the move to the Philippines will be more of a supply drop, with only a few AA units, a couple of regiments, some armor and some base forces adding in to the already plentiful forces there. The Japanese have only shown two IDs on Luzon, and I see a third with recon, but I think that's it. There is a chance to move fast and get around them to the North or West coast, and I'll just leave a holding force in Manila to try that out. With supply though I can continue to build forts and also flesh out the Philippine troops even more. I can also fly in air groups!

Well, the KB looks ready to rumble again. It's moved out from Samah and is now a few hexes off of Cam Ran Bay. I have no idea what Lowpe is contemplating, which worries me, but if the KB is out here, it's looking for trouble. I set all valuable TFs to move to bases with CAP, sent extra CAP to all SW Indochina bases, and I'll place the Fleet one hex off of Kompong Trach to hopefully get support form the LBA there and at Rachgia as well as some form Soc Trang.

The Allied CV strike power is still limited, but the CAP is strong and diverse, with a good high CAP and solid middle CAP planes. I've added the BBs and a CA to the CV TF so it now has 25 ships and 18k flak .

There is an Indian ID unloading at Kompong, a Brit ID heading up the Malaya coast toward Patani, an Indian armoured brigade loading at Patani and two PI bound TFs scurrying back to Singers just in case. The US Army should take Bien Hoa tomorrow. Allied forces will invest Cam Ran and bombard next turn.

The KB and BBs wound their way through a lot of subs leaving Samah, and now all of those will shift to pursue, as well as 12 more recently patched up, refueled and upgraded that have been at Singers. One of these days I should get a lucky shot on a CV.

Chanthaburi has a Marine Defence battalion. A CD unit is at Kompong Trach, and Quinhon has 300 mines plus about 15 PT boats and a few CD guns on a base force.

Some of the RN base forces come with CD guns, and most of the ones I've installed on Sumatra and Java chokepoints will be moved soon, but not quite yet!

Its so early that the USN has not yet started to load up on all the new ships...

But given the focus of this campaign .. do you have anything going on in the Marshalls?

It might be be nice to route supplies from West CONUS to the Philippines ? But can you escort them through a gauntlet ?

Very early on I took Tabituaea in the Gilberts, and I can negotiate a route that moves close to Canton Island relatively safely. Once the real Allied surge of troops and materials begins to come taking the Solomons, parts of New Guinea and some of the Gilberts and Marshalls will be easier than in most games, as neither of us have focused on these historical areas of interest.

I'm moving on Singkawang now, from Sambas, and I'd like to get another base on the NW corner of Borneo so I can protect the LOC from Singers to Luzon, but I'll also be moving on Balikpapan soon if all goes well in the Saigon area. That division is about 5o% prepped for Balikpapan. I still hold Macassar, Kendari and Ambon, so if I can begin to allocate some units to those bases it'll put the squeeze on from both ends.

The major action today was in Indochina, and each side sees to be feeling out the other's intentions. The KB remains at Cam Ran Bay, and it might just be there to help guard the air drop of extra troops, the bombarding TFs now being employed and to entice the Allies to strike against a full CAP with LBA added in.

Instead I'll hold the Allied CVs near Kompong Trach and sweep the base tomorrow with P-38E. Today Bien Hoa also fell, and the 32nd US ID will now walk into Saigon. Several armoured units will be there in time for the first attack, and a number of smaller infantry units will join shortly after. An Indian ID just landed at Kompong as well and will make its as quickly as it can. If I can take Saigon, those troops will move to Cam Ran and overwhelm the 9k of troops there plus any added fairly easily. So I'll actually welcome him flying in more as they'll eventually be POWs anyway. He can't move on Quinhon with anything major anytime soon, and I've got more and more being shipped over every day. A British ID will be allocated to Canthaburi to isolate Bangkok and close that door.

On Malaya the armoured units moving on Singora ran into an Independent Brigade. They got a chunk out in the first attack with no damage to the tanks, so I'll wait for a Dutch regiment to move in and try again. I think I'll not have to add more in here.

In the South troops continue to walk toward Kuantan, hitting the IJA refugees from Kota Baru on the way.

The invasion of Pegu just launched from Cochin and will include the CVE Long Island and CL Hermes for (very light) air cover. I'll send my first P-38F group this way to try and sweep Rangoon prior to the landing and also bomb the port hoping to add some damage to the cruisers stuck there.

On the 16th the KB stays put at Cam Ran and bears the brunt of a Lightning sweep. A good reduction of the KB CAP done here by the ace P-38 jocks.

On the ground the tanks do not take Dalat next to Cam Ran. The bombardment shows the Allies hold a big advantage in AV so regardless of the position of the IJN and likelihood of another bombardment I'll give it a shot with a DA. Troops continue to pile in to Kompong and walk toward Saigon. I'll bombard there tomorrow and see what we're facing.

The Allied CVs will stay put one more day at least to cover a Brit ID heading to Canthaburi, troops flooding across from Patani and the ones fro mSingers moving up. After that it's off to the PI.

In India I'm preparing strikes to hit Rangoon and surrounding bases ahead of a landing at Pegu. I've got some P-38F getting set to transfer over, plus some Beaufighters that can escort bombers at long distance, and I'll have about 35 4E to use for the op in addition to another 50 or so 2E. Chinese troops with British Burmese troops and some base forces are walking to Schwebo as well, and should arrive around the same time as the air activity begins in a few days. Opening the Burma road would be fantastic at this point. The Chinese have been building up and are getting very strong now. It'd be nice to get them into action.

My current opponent is not very fond of the "forked tail devils." He reported never having this much trouble with them (Sept/Oct 42).

Getting the Chinese into action will at least put a drain on his overall supply situation.

The P-38 might be the most important reason this game is where it is now. I have one 33 kill pilot in August 42!!

The Chinese have done virtually nothing but fill out disabled devices for months, and some of the Corps are getting big now. I've also turned on a few for replacements and have a couple of 600+ AV units. I've just been moving them into a position to begin an attack once the supply in moving again. I think they can achieve a few minor victories at least in the short term.

P-38s are very good against the A6M2. Against later versions of the Zero, and 2nd generation fighters... not so much.

I feel the most decisive single asset in this game so far for you has been the submarines i.e. the concentrated use you made of them in southern China Sea;

this killed and is killing Lowpe's freedom of action.

What I can't still grasp and Lowpe hasn't answered yet, is how his dedicated air units + ASW vessels have not dented sensibly your SS fleet used in such a concentration over long time in restricted waters;

the only clue is what you wrote between the lines some time ago that you had about a dozen of damaged SSs in Singapore.

Having Singapore as a repair yard within 20-30 hexes of the main action most of the time has been extremely useful. He does damage and sink subs, but not at a rate I can't sustain. I've tried to not do anything too stupid, like sending them into mined ports, but I still do occasionally.

His ASW air has gotten hits but it mostly just finds and makes subs less dangerous as their DL is up.

Not surprised - it seems a bit early in the game for the Japanese to be getting good at ASW. They might be getting experience but their equipment still sucks.

It takes months to get aerial ASW trained to a sufficient degree, and you have to have bases to fly from.

That's one interpretation. The other could be that the boost in troops at CRB is from units evacuating Bien Hoa and Saigon to be flown/FT'd/Sub Transported out of CRB. The Japanese unit icon at Saigon is bright red, meaning small units - no divisions. Your bombardment next turn will tell.

Not a lot of action to report but a lot going on nonetheless. The Allied fleet moves down and connects with about six TFs that will move together toward the PI. There are some base forces, some armor, some arty and lots of supply. The goal if to make it self-sufficient.

The KB moves back to Samah. Got a good read on it there.

The Saigon bombardment shows one very understrength division and a part of another. I have a 3:1 AV advantage, and I'll try a DA tomorrow. A lot more is on the way, so I just want to check forts and see how it goes. Not expecting to win the battle on the first try here, but since there is a clear advantage, may as well get things started. I also got the full British ID unloaded at Chanthaburi, and it will move around toward the Bangkok river crossing then back up to Battambang, which has only a base force currently.

The move on Singora doesn't go as planned. I'll have to bring more to the part, and I also have some units moving through the jungle, so I may trap this blocking brigade anyway.

Elsewhere the Pegu invasion nears the Arakan, and will continue on as air groups move to support from Chittagong. There are some 4Es targeting Port Blair and Moulmein in the next few days, and I'll also hit the middle Burma airfields. This should all coincide nicely with the land move toward Schwebo, which will enter that base in 5-6 turns.

Your Burma map looks almost like mine, I am on 3 August, 1942. I just landed at Akyab behind his leading units who were further south along the coast road in Burma. I too am attacking Lashio.

I've mostly been defending Lashio. Just held onto it. Luckily got a big bought out Chinese Corps in there and the Burma Division lasted just long enough. The action halted there months ago, but the IJA has kept two IDs in place. They're now in a very precarious position.

Here is a look at top pilots at this point in the war. As you can see not many have been lost. Currently only one in the top aces is MIA (from a sweep over Cam Ran Bay) and a few others are WIA. These top guys are all in one group now, the long standing P-38E group that's held everything together. They're chosen for all of the tough assignments, and just now are transitioning to India to sweep Burmese bases. I now have another group of P-38F that are repairing and should be ready in the next week.

Most of these guys are from the AVG and PI pursuit groups that start the war, with a few other notables. GS Welch of Dec 7 fame is the top jock for now, with DL Hill and Pappy back by almost a dozen.

A quiet turn on the 19th. I did get a decent first attack at Saigon. I'll now wait for more troops to fill in. Southern Army HQ is here, the most important IJA HQ on map.

The fleet moves into a gaggle and heads toward Manila along the North coast of Borneo.
