obvert: An odd thing happened today. A small fragment, only 2 squads, of the 32nd ID that accidentally landed in the DEI was also somehow warped to the PI and sat off the coast of Luzon in a sea hex!!

Luckily it had the disband function available, and so I did. It went away. Never seen that before!

Looks like you discovered the secret alien base hex and they moved the last two squads out of there for you. Did any of the troops have memory blanks and the feeling of being violated?

Nice GIF!

Yeah, it is definitely a UFO moment.

Sept 6, 1942

A lot going on this turn. The Allies bomb, sweep and bombard Balikpapan in preparation for landing on the 7th. The fields are shot now, and the CAP should be weak if up at all. Another bombardment at Balik and Samarinda will try to ensure there are no surprises.

A TF of big valuable fast oilers approached Borneo from the North during the turn and got nailed by Allied CV air strikes. Looks like 4-5 tankers sunk. Nothing else seen coming, and the KB is still visible at Takao.

On the ground the Allies try another attack at Bayombang and get about an even result despite a 1:3 DA. Everything will rest and try again in a few days.

At Cam Ran Bay the forts are dropped to 2, but it’s a 1:2, and it looks like it’ll take a few more to wear down the defenders.

Up North the Chinese and Russians continue to push. Paotow looks ready to fall, but another tank brigade is on the way to make sure.

Sept 7, 1942

An interesting day. Troops land with minimal problems at Baikpapan, although the USA ID is not fully prepped and took a few more disabled. I'll bombard tomorrow to see what's in store here.

Up North the Soviets meet the IJA tanks, two divisions of them (!!) on the NW side of China. This vector doesn't look too promising!

To the NE though I think there is much less in place ,and it looks like the combined Soviet/Chinese assault should be able to get through in a few spots. The first attack at Paotow fails but more is on the way and should tip the balance.

It looks to me that his tank divisions were either in reserve or just arrived, not in combat mode - there were no Japanese vehicle losses. My experience with the Russian tanks vs the Japanese is that they will chew up the Japanese tanks at better than 3:1, if the Japanese are the attackers. He has terrain, AV and numbers on his side but I don't see any RF Gun units yet. Once you get some infantry and artillery there you have a good chance to break through!

I'll be retreating one hex back to meet the arty and AA and an infantry division. The tanks are a bit messed up. They're not T-34s. They're about the same as a Stuart, really.

The IJA tank divisions are tough, and they do have some 45mm AT guns embedded plus a decent amount of arty.

There is a reason this is a three pronged attack. If his two best divisions are here, then maybe the center and Western approaches will have a better chance.

A very good two turns as several missions complete on the 9th.

After a short but intense combat, the PI troops and multi-nation armor push through at Bayombang. I'll halt here and build some forts to consolidate before continuing on. I'll need some reinforcements I think, as the IJA seems to be bringing in more troops to Luzon.

The slightly beaten up 32nd USA ID and some small Dutch units take Balikpapan on the first try. This unit will now begin prepping for a base on Mindanao. I'll also push forward and get some units to Morotai to being adding pressure to the Japanese position in the Southern DEI.

Also in the news, the forts are dropped to 1 at Cam Ran Bay and the DA gets a 1:1. So it looks like this base will fall very soon, delivering complete control of Southern Indochina and a direct shot to move into the North via the coastal road. Troops are also pushing across near Pnom Penh and will aim to get into the Cambodian plains. With Burma in hand, the Malay Peninsula being mopped up, and a threat to link in with China, the Japanese are going to have to come up with something to stem the tide. I'm sure Lowpe has something up his sleeve.

On the 10th the North China escapade gets bombed by the IJAAF, but it's only a scratch. All vectors did bring good AA with them, so it'll be hard to get the usual results in China against the Soviets.

In the mop-up areas Kuantan is attacked and the Allied units get a 6:1 but don't take the base or force a retreat. One of those weird attacks where the defender has no retreat path and losses are light. On the 11th it was 18:1 and still no capitulation. It'll collapse soon.

Progress is made in Northern China as the Soviet tank divisions get a 1:1 at Tatung and lower forts to 2. As long as nothing more can rail in this should be a done deal. This will open a nice road into the central plains for a lot of following troops. Paotow is also weakened and should fall soon.

Cam Ran Bay is also teetering.

When concentrated on a narrow vector it seems even impressive in late 42 what the Allies are beginning to accumulate for reinforcements. Most of these will head directly to Indochina, and some will repopulate the Southern DEI.

Commander of allied force in Kuantan: OK, boys shoot a few shots in their general direction and we will call it a Deliberate Attack. And for Christ's sake, try not to kill any jap until the end of the war!

On the 12th the IJA tries a DA with the tank divisions one hex outside of Tolun. A full Soviet ID plus arty and AA had moved up and dug in around the battered tank units. They held easily at 1:4, and this will simply be a holding hex until the tanks decide to move out. I'll even risk getting these units trashed to keep the IJA tanks occupied and let ours move freely into central China.

At Tatung in the center a few hexes from Peiping, the DA by Soviet tanks gets a 1:1 lowering forts to 1. This should be the beginning of the end for the defenders unless a last ditch reinforcement arrives.

A bit more happened at Kuantan but this group of units is giving it a go in true Banzai fashion.

A massive 361AV infantry brigade moves into Bayombang. The Allied DA gets a 1:2, but it looks like the PI troops and Allied tanks will be able to wear them down eventually.

Cam Ran Bay falls and everything retreats into the South China Sea.

Trying to figure out what you meant by the CRB Japanese troops retreating into the sea ....
How can they retreat into a trapped hex if they must have a clear supply path to a base before they can retreat?

It's odd, but there they are. The retreat path open is to the South and it's basically a sea hex on a tiny spur of land with no direct supply path to a Japanese base.

Here are also some arrows showing the many vectors of current Allied progress.

Ah, right. The F6 key reveals that the spur of land is a reachable area by land.
As for retreat path, there is a path through the area west of Dalat and then NE to Tourane/Hue. It does not matter that your troops have traversed that area during their march - if there is no one in the hexes now, supply can flow through there.

Yeah, I figured as much, and since the Southern Army HQ is here it's going to want to save itself and it's charges.

I've got two brigades dedicated to mop up, one moving directly from Cam Ran and the other heading to close the open road hex and move in.

Sept 13, 1942

A lot of action on the ground on the 13th, not much anywhere else. The Japanese get a moral victory by destroying one of the starting small tank regiments on the PI that was stranded at San Fernando. Had to let that one go.

Up in NW China the combined advance continues to wear down the defenders. It looks like Tatung will fall in the next attack. Paotow is also weakened, and it's only a matter of time before Kwesui falls. This will give a short rail network, three decent bases in good defensive territory, and good jumping off point to threaten Peiping and the central plains. Following on are about 2k AV of Chinese and 1k AV of Soviets with a lot of arty, AA and base forces.

Kuantan is finally clear of Japanese defenders and troops will move up toward Temuloh. This is a slow but painless clean-up operation so far and it will only get ugly if the better Japanese divisions at Temuloh and Kluong still have supply. If they do now it won't last much longer being bombed daily and bombarded by troops in the hex.

Haha! Yes. Something along those lines (or behind them!).

Sept 14-15, 1942

I haven't had any time to update over the past week but we've been still doing about a turn a day. I'll try to get through them quickly. Things are getting interesting on the ground in a few areas.

On the ground the Allies take Nakhon on the Malay peninsula on the long campaign up toward Bangkok. I'll just keep these troops slogan along until they get there.

In Northern China Tatung falls, giving a good base on a rail line connecting to Paotow that will be a fantastic support base and airfield for ops around the area and extending to the Chinese plains. The base between these two at Kweisui will fall soon. The Soviet tank divisions will now head SW and try to combine with the Chinese Armies moving from around Yenan to possibly break into the plains.

On the 15th the Japanese troops at Bayombang hold back the tired PI troops and commonwealth tanks, so I'll hold a bit here and build up some force before trying again.

Troops are converging on Taung Gyi and Lashio and will soon open the Burma road to China. This will be a key component of the current campaign there. I'l also push along the Indochinese coastline, and should be able to break open a path into China that way as well.

This is the first game where I've tried to use the Chinese troops offensively in any meaningful way in 42. It's dicey! Defensively, in good terrain, they can cause problems if well supplied, but the big Corps at Kwesui can't even knock out a couple units totalling a tenth of its AV and with a lot fewer guns. They do have tanks, but beat up and disabled tanks mostly.

Anyway, it's fun, because I know the Soviets will add in a bit more firepower, and that is the goal. To merge the manpower of the Chinese with the arty and tanks of the Soviets to push through. The IJAAF 2E bombers have begun trying to get some hits, and they're not doing badly, but Soviet AA is decent and I've got a good amount in the area now, so soon these strikes will not be as useful I'm hoping.

Paotow does fall, and Kweisui does lose a fort in a 1:1 and should go down soon. The Japanese are being annoying and have a lot of smaller units in rear areas trying to create problems, but I have those as well, This will be a very chaotic battlefield for a while. Much like the Chinese theatre in the war, I bet.

On the 17th the Japanese try again at Beaufort but can't beat the Marines and small Dutch units there, still.

Near Taiyuan in North China I sent in a small unit to check the river crossing hex. Looks good, with only two small units, the 1/3 division already defeated twice.

The 18th and 19th see a lot of plans taking shape and going well. The Chinese near Taiyuan shock over the river and open a clear path for 1,500AV to move across. This army will help shore up the Soviet tank divisions gains while they move on to try an infiltrate further.

Puerta Princessa is invaded and taken easily. This will extend the safe LOC path toward the PI a little farther. At Bayombang the Allies try a DA but can't break through and will hold for a while as the IJA is bringing in another brigade.

Near Nakhon the Allied tanks push the IJA back toward Chumpon and continue the clearing of the peninsula. Farther South Temuloh will be surrounded soon and attacked with an additional division plus of troops moving up from Kuantan.

Near Siem Reap in Cambodia, the Brits punch through the Imperial Guards Division, opening up a clear path to the plains toward Ubon. The Allies also open another path toward Pakse and will continue on all roads toward Hanoi.

The last Japanese units are removed from Lashio on the 20th, meaning of course that it'll be mere days until supply begins to flow into China.

Toungou is still in IJA hands, but is empty and will flip soon. Supply convoys are already unloading at Rangoon and Commonwealth and Chinese troops are pursuing all IJA and Thai troops into the high jungles along the Thai border. Once all is secure in Burma these troops will march to Thailand.

A bit farther North progress is made to get troops into the plains and pathways are opening in several locations. I don't think he realises yet how much is coming on the NW side of this multi-pronged campaign. The two tank divisions still sit with equal Soviet troops holding back advance from the NE, but more is coming from that side as well. I'll also begin to consider a re-focused campaign toward Manchuria once the IJA is shifted toward China.

In Indochina troops march North along the coast toward Tourane, and in the highlands toward Pakse, as well as through the jungles toward the plains and Upon.

An involved turn today. Lots of action all over the map. In Burma the 4Es hit Chang Mai to root out the fighters flying LR CAP from there. Mission successful. Only a few losses.

The Japanese try a few attacks against the Soviets that don't go to well. All those big arty tubes getting some work in finally!

Kweisui finally lets go the ghost and the HQ there suffers some heavy losses which is nice. This opens the rail between the three captured bases up here too, and lets the rest of the troops surge forward. Well, sludge forward anyway, on the yellow roads.

I'll post some maps soon.

On Malaya there are still two stacks of good IJA troops. One with a single ID at Temuloh, and the big stack from Singers sitting at Kluong with 3 IDs. Both surrounded.

We're seeing less resistance in certain areas, though, and the Indochinese campaign is seeing mostly brigades and smaller troops, so should be able to break through after a while.

In China though there are a lot of good IJA units, and we're getting into those now in several locations.

Sept 23-25, 1942

Ok. A bit behind here.

There have been a lot of things going on in this game, as usual. These first few catch-up posts are for turns that focused on the ground, and the air battles were relatively uncontested for both sides.

In the North the Soviets and Chinese are definitely causing some problems for the Japanese. I'll move armor off road to try and get behind lines to near Peiping.

In the South units are moving on Tourane. I've parked the fleets and will nt contest IJN dominance of this area except with subs. The KB is still hovering around off of the Indochinese coastline.

With the fall of Taung Gyi all major bases in Burma have fallen back to the Allies.

In the South the chase is on in Burma, Malaya is now nearly finished with pockets beginning to be reduced at Temuloh and Kloung, and a chase up toward Chumpon while the rail is threatening to be cut in a few spots farther North.

In the North the IJA armor continues to hold one Russian army back. More will begin to flood down soon to Manchurian bases. The Japanese are bombing liberally all over the place, and I don't quite have the airbase infrastructure to really stop it yet.

Sept 26-28, 1942

Some good things happening in these turns, with the block near Kwesui being broken and the Japanese retreating into a surrounded position.

The first attack at Temuloh at least reduces forts, although it was a 1:2.

Surat Thani falls. Pakse is about to crumble as well. Tourane has forts dropped and will not last long either.

In Central China I noticed the units at Pingsiang were not strong and set a DA. The Chinese kicked them out the first try and wreck an IJA ID.

The KB enters the danger zone. Lots of subs near here. It looks like he might be trying to rescue some of the troops formerly at Cam Ran Bay.

Sept 29-30, 1942

Two subs get shots at IJN CVs but can't land hit. The troops on the ground do better, as Temuloh and Pakse fall.

The end of Sept has the Allied armies moving forward in all theatres and steadily pushing toward an even larger supply link to China.

I've let this one lapse a bit. I'll do some updates to get to current over the next few days, but will combine days and only deal with big actions where they occur. Such an interesting game, and getting to territory I've not seen, with Russian/Chinese cooperation in Northern China and the British and Americans leading the way across Indochina toward China's southern border.

Also, the Americans fight for more up in the Aleutians and prepare for deeper strikes into the Central Pacific early.
