I left off with the Allies in a hard fought battle at Tourane, the IJN supporting weaker fragments of IJA troops holed up there. The Allies were also moving up the Malay peninsula and attacking the retreating Japanese units there, low on supply and isolated. A large Japanese army still sits at Kluong, and at Temuloh the battle to reduce another stack has begun.

In the North the Russians move forward along several Axis into Manchuria, Northern China and the Chinese attack in isolated pockets where terrains and numbers allow.

On the 1st the Allies win the most strategic of the land battles fought that day in spite of heavy IJN units bombarding. Tourane falls, and Hue is next to be invested. A few battles prove more difficult, such as near Loyang where a small stack of Japanese units is reinforced and helped by the IJA to ward off a much larger Chinese army. Also, in Burma the Chinese suffer a bad defeat in rough territory and will pull back to wait for more Allied units to join and continue surrounding cut off troops there.

In the Pacific preparations begin for invasions at the Russian Aleuts in Japanese possession. I'll move before the end of October there.

The KB continues to show itself off of Indochina, and subs converge. The S-27 gets a shot at Kaga in the night, but can't land any of a salvo of four. Bombardments of Tourane also come in fast and furious.

To further cut off Japanese and Thai forces paratroopers land and take Pisanoluke and Pratchup Kiri kiri khan.

The Chinese try again after reinforcement near Loyand, but air support helps keep the Japanese in this one and it's a 1:1 with significant losses to both sides.

Instead of attacks on troops near Loyang I decided to begin strikes at nearby airbases to reduce fighter cover. This proved to be a turning point in the battle.

In Northern China Chenting is the object of Allied desires right now. If that base falls the rail and interior lines of movement will really help the Russians and Chinese, and the paths will open to several further bases in difficult to defend areas. The ultimate object would be Kaifeng and Loyang, surrounding several stacks and linking large Chinese armies to the cause. This will also begin to allow more direct supply LOCs to the Allied charge through Indochina, eventually.

A lot of action suddenly. A red combat TF icon suddenly appeared near Singers on the 5th. Somehow trapped IJN cruisers and DDs sortie and make it undetected through the CD gun and mine barrier in the straits. The RN sends out a big heavy cruiser TF and the USN sets up several kill zones with carrier strike planes sent to nearby bases.

The RN contacts the IJN cruisers in the night but only puts limited damage on Ashigara before they disappear in the smoke and darkness. The morning brings a sighting though, and Dauntless and Avenger bombers vector into the area. Hits rain down on all IN ships through both phases, and by the end of day all are confirmed sunk.

The interlopers chose the wrong path. If they'd gone more toward Saigon and farther from Borneo they'd have had a better chance of avoiding air strikes.

The Chinese/Russian progress in Northern China continues, as Taiyuan falls to a combined assault. Now Chengting will be fully invested. There is a lot on the way here, and if he Lowpe doesn't have a good look around with recon I think it'll be a bit of a surprise to soon see two tank divisions supported by a number of Chinese Corps and very good Soviet arty.

Just to the North near Kalgan the Allies will undertake a long term arty duel, using the big siege guns from Manchuria and up to three mortar regiments equipped with Katyushas. I'm very interested to see how well the Soviet arty will perform here in a static battle, dug into good x2 territory.

The Chinese have moved past Psingsiang in the center, just South of Changsha, and attack the already weakened IJA here. Once this battle is won the Chinese will have opened a wide path into the heartland of SW China. I'll hope to move forward and around toward Canton, bypassing the tough terrain around Kukong.

Over in Manchuria the Soviets begin to reduce Lungchen. Forts go to 3 and it won't be long here trying to defend in the clear. The ultimate targets here are Tsitsahar and eventually Harbin, which would give a great rail connection directly into the heart of Manchuria.

Also, in Northern China the Soviet tanks get behind the IJA and take lightly defended Paoting. I'll stop there for now and circle back to Chengting. This will help isolate that area and potentially force the IJA to further invest in the defence of Peiping and Tiensien

Oct 7-9, 1942

There is a bit less major action on the 7th, but I sent out a flurry of PT boats to aim for the slowed KB. IJN cruisers do a good job of shielding and sink a handful of the strike boats.

I'v been walking a Chinese Corps down toward Kwangchowan, and amazingly the KB sticks around and bombs those troops in spite of the sub swarms in the area.

Near Pingsiang the Japanese take heavy losses are are pushed back. The Chinese are doing well and will continue on.

On the 8th the Allies miss the KB again as it sticks around to batter troops moving on Kwangchowan. In the center an HQ is wrecked near Pingsiang, and up North the troops near Loyang wipe out a brigade that stuck in as rear guard.

Lungchen up North in Manchuria is captured and an IJA ID wrecked.

On the 9th not much of import happens other than some ground bombing and subs being attacked by ASW near the KB.

I've let this one lapse a bit. I'll do some updates to get to current over the next few days, but will combine days and only deal with big actions where they occur. Such an interesting game, and getting to territory I've not seen, with Russian/Chinese cooperation in Northern China and the British and Americans leading the way across Indochina toward China's southern border.

Also, the Americans fight for more up in the Aleutians and prepare for deeper strikes into the Central Pacific early.

Nice to see this game is on !

This was always particularly interesting because:

1) Your early risky strikes with carriers into the Dutch East Indies and
2) All of a sudden the Soviet activation

As you say something we don't see often.

Thanks for the updates.

The IJN bombards Chinese troops at Kwangchown and the KB continues to pound form the air. This time though I set a LR CAP and got to the KB fly-boys with around 20-25 planes shot down. They still put some serious damage and disruption to the troops, but they were set to shock, and the base itself wasn't reinforced, so the Chinese have opened a port! This could be useful later.

A skirmish near CamRan Bay leaves one IJN DD damaged trying to pull troops.

On the Malay peninsula Chumpon is taken with decent Japanese losses.

Our troops pull to within one hex of Loyang. The Japanese look to be reinforcing so rather than waste the efforts here by potentially trashing these Corps, I'll dig and wait to see what comes. It is a clear hex, so not ideal for him to reinforce there.

The IJN is still a force. This is not all fun and games for the Allies. It looks like Lowpe will use some of the same tactics he's been employing in his other game of the same period; devastating and regular naval bombardments and fully disclosed intimidation with the KB.

Hue is now invested, but can these troops duck the hail of incoming shells long enough to engage the defenders and take the base?

A lot happened in the air on the 11th as well. It went both ways, but in the end the Allies came out ahead. The IJA has begun bombing troops all over China, but I LR CAPed the units near Pingsiang and downed about 35-40 Lillys and Sallys. We traded sweeps near Loyang, both killing LR CAP, and the Japanese surprised a 4E run over Hue, downing 10 4Es on the day. The Hue attack also fails but did drop forts.

Up North the Chengting bombardment shows this might be a very tough fight. Ouch! near Linshi though, the Soviets kick two IJA brigades off of a yellow road to clear the road to another less defended base beyond. Most of these units are here to occupy the two IJA tank divisions so they do't move back into central China. I don't care if anything is achieved as long as not much is lost and the tanks remain here.

Udon falls to several Commonwealth IDs and this opens their pathway to support the moves along the coast.

Wow

There is a consistent theme in this interesting game.

An outside player assumes much - given the sudden and unexpected windfalls of Soviet forces and territories maintained at this early date.

I was still forgetting about - underestimating - the resources IJN has; albeit your honorable enemy

1) must be suffering from fuel deprivation somewhat...
2) doesn't need as much fuel because his SLOC are dramatically shortened and..
3) what has to give is R&D on newer planes and industry (??)

However in late 42 - the Allied Commander still lack the "quality" Carrier Planes (for example) to try to mess with a task force like this....

Back off - endure it - threaten somewhere else ? I guess ?

Flood the IJN Capital Ships with subs and deal with cripples that split off! Seems to be working, although the poor USN torps drag out the process!

I am surprised at how well the Chinese are doing, even with some help from other Allies. Did you change commanders or doing anything else to make the Chinese more effective?

The 12th marked the beginning of the mini-campaign to invade the Soviet Aleutian bases at Bering and Medny. A newish group of P-38F swept Bering and got 3:1 against the A6M2 there.

At Hailun it takes all of two attacks to break the back of IJA defenders, and the formerly intact units are all in bad shape. Now tanks will attempt to surround Harbin while the main army moves toward a non-held river crossing to avoid the shock into the city.

Soviet bombers get jumped today and that reverses the gains of the past few days.

The IJN continues massive bombardments of coastal areas in Indochina. Troops will continue to plug away against the small garrison at Hue while subs chase. On the 12th they get a 1:1 and drop forts to 2.

The RN gets in on the action over in Borneo as well, hitting Brunei, where the Japanese are still basing air groups.

I guess ?

I think fuel will be fine now, but in a year will definitely be getting low. I would doubt his R & D will suffer. He'll probably have Jacks and Georges soon. The air war will always be difficult.

Currently, I don't need the fleet or the carriers to do anything. China is the goal and bases there will negate the need for any Central or Northern Pacific bases to strat bomb the Home Islands.

Yes to the subs. They're getting some periodic hits, but that's all I need right now.

The Chinese just need supply and some air balance. In the North though they have Soviet arty.

April 15, 1945

On the 15th the Japanese send the IJN into Cam Ran Bay, but no bombardment happens. They do hit the minefields, and Kongo and Aoba take a hit. I'll send the subs in to see if they can add to the damage.

Bering Island is also invaded in the North with no sign of any IJN opposition. It should fall very soon along with Medny. This will effectively end the challenge in the North from the Japanese, and they'll have to hunker down to protect the Kuriles. I'll be going elsewhere though!

The first attack a Bering goes well. The island base should fall soon with it's entire garrison. Medny is invaded and with the regiment coming next, that base should fall easily as well.

Some tanks sneak behind to Vinh and bypass Hue. They'll likely take the base soon and move on Hanoi. Getting this vector open to China to turn the firehose of supply on is the number one priority now.

Oct 17, 1942

A busy day all around the map. A few very interesting air battles and some signifiant breakthroughs on the ground.

Migs tussled with Tojos up in Manchuria, and the sweeping Migs got the better of it by about 2:1. This is the first time we’ve had big fur balls with Migs and 2nd gen IJA planes. The Migs still look good in 42.

This was also the first real test of the IL-2. They came in low and did their job well, ducking a bit of CAP and getting good hits on the troops. I’ll look forward to more of that since this is now the most plentiful Soviet bomber, and the most durable.

Down in China the air battles heated up over Kanshien where the Chinese are sieging the base. The Japanese cleared most of the CAP, but just enough was left to disturb and down about 10 Sallys bombing troops. They did get through, but couldn’t do enough as the Chinese take the base with heavy IJA losses. This opens a good path for our troops to the SE. Chengting troops are now in place and in spite of the tough bombardment results I’ll try for the base soon.

In Indochina the armor captures Vinh, isolating the entire Hue garrison and opening a road to Hanoi. They will move forward immediately, letting a Punjab battalion move in from the rear to secure the base. There should be one more Viet Min brigade and I’ll bet it’s at Hanoi.

On the naval front in the South China Sea an oddly placed IJN cruiser force is nearing Borneo. I’ve been sending surface combat forces to bombard bases there hoping to catch it but it’s hanging offshore. Is this some injured ships from the mine hits seeking the closest port?

Bering Island also falls to Allied troops.

Here is a look at China now. Action all over, but I'm happy to take it slowly until supply really starts to flow in fully. Right now Chungking is at about 25k, but units are able to fill out and I can build some airfields.

This is Manchuria. Lots of manoeuvring and tank envelopments. air power is having less of an effect for both sides as neither seems to want to commit for fear of losing lots of bombers to a surprise LR CAP.

Good progress made in several contested hexes in China and in Indochina. Hue should fall soon, and at the hex near Kalgan bombardments with the Soviet Katyushas are kicking some butt.

In a fun CAP defence a combined Allied set of Chinese, American and RAF fighters beat down three days of sweeps against Kweilin.

Medny gets a few more troops and will fall soon.

The Japanese have been beginning to bomb Soviet troops heavily around threatened Harbin. Our forces are only a day or two from investing and attacking the city, and the units helping in the envelopment are taking some losses, but I'll try to catch some of these massive strikes as well with CAP from Tsitsahar.

On the 20th naval search shows the IJN cruiser force nearing Borneo again. Several TFs sortie including BBs NC and WA. Could be some fireworks!
