The hex targeted in the message her, 92,56, is where the CVs are located. So it's good the I had so many SCTFs moving in the area and shielding the CVs. I notice also our lead fast BB TF gets within one hex of some Japanese ships, most likely parts of the KB, but doesn't react. Too bad.

The CLs rain down a hail of 6inch fire on the IJN here, but get some in return too. Thunderstorms made visibility terrible and the first one starts off at 1k yards!!

Unfortunately over two battles the Helena takes the brunt of the BB fire and goes under. The Yamashiro is likely burning heavy fires with a lot of devices destroyed, so should be out for a while if not sunk.

In one final note on the turn, Taichu on Formosa falls to a para-drop. This is significant, and I should be able to now simply drop a pile of troops on already moving from Manila. Tomorrow I'll push them up toward Loang on Luzon in the hopes of incurring a strike near my LBA CAP. I have Hermes and CVE Long Island here for cover. Not enough without the LBA, so I've got to massage it until the fleet CVs return.

Those CVs at Hangchow only showed up after you captured the base. That suggests they were evicted from port and might be in damaged condition, possibly without their air groups. Hope you can get some attacks on them before they get to the homeland!

They didn't show up at Hangchow after the attack. They were always out a few hexes East of Shanghai under a cloud. I went for it. They got away.

If there was anything in Hangchow I didn't spot it.

Dec 25, 1942

This has been such a hotly contested game from the start I am always apprehensive before seeing the new turn, and especially of late. Sending the Allied CVs deep into enemy held territory is tense, and this is at a time when the Japanese still have a CV advantage. I've been lucky that Akagi and Kaga were taken out for repairs as my strikes only just got through to damage a few more CVs this time.

Christmas Day wasn't much of a holiday for the USN sailors still at battle stations up in the North China Sea hunting for IJN damaged from the previous days' battles, or for those just sent out toward a staunch IJN presence around Formosa. The first contacts were made near Northern Luzon as two DDs ran into five old BBs and escorts. They exchanged a few shots and then all bugged off.

CA Quincy hit Takao effectively but didn't stop the IN from flying missions. The CAP is still strong there and the base will have to be hit again over the next few days. I've had P-38s set to sweep there but again today they didn't fly. Some P-40K did and got a decent result, about 3:2.

Next the old light cruisers from each side had a dust-up. It turned out about equal, with CL Tama taking heavy damage and CL Trenton eating a long lance but limping away successfully before being punished further. She'll make it barring more unexpected interactions tomorrow. Back to Manila for a refurb. Tama later took three small hit from Seagulls out hunting.

Allied DBs wiped out some limping IJN DDs near Saisho-To, which is great. These have to be getting scarce now. A lot more have been damaged, including Kagero, which may have gone down this turn. All of the IJN ships still in action around Formosa will be in danger of being cut off soon.

Some LBA Vals from Takao hit a damaged Boise at Taichu and she disbanded with damage at about 60/70/40 with 65 fires. Yikes! I'm flying in the South Pacific HQ plus another naval base force and setting more CAP over this base for tomorrow. Come on Allied damage control! One USN DD will remain at base to try and take any incoming hits from sea or air.

Karenko near Taihoku also falls to a para-assault on Christmas. This makes the landing on Formosa much easier, I think. Now the main body will move down to support, the escort and troop transports will drop a hex closer to Appear for LBA cover and prepare to move up to Karenko to land on the 27th. Taihoku will be easy pickins with only 6k troops in base.

Here is the recent sunk ships list. I don't believe either Yamashiro or Akagi are down, but this tells me they at least had damage that might require some yard time. The cruisers could be sunk. We'll see. Sad to lose Helena, but she went down fighting and likely saved the CVs from being engaged by the IJN BBs. So well worth it.

Here is a look at the Formosa plans. Both fleets will meet near Orchid Island, then move in to Karenko on the 27th. I've got about 1k AV landing plus some engineers and base forces, which should be plenty to take Taihoku and hold the already captured bases, but I might need more to conquer Takao and defeat the 50k IJA forces there now.

Formosa is not so important now, but holding it takes away a solid offensive base from the IJN in Takao and solidifies the newly captured Chinese coastal bases from Swatow to Hangchow, with Amoy about to fall as well.

The condensed space for the IJN and Japanese air power to operate in will make them more powerful in the short term, and could lead to some intense battles soon. I'm already well prepped for several bases on the Home Islands.

Boxing day is up and down. Starting with the bad, the IJN not only sticks around, but gets aggressive, targeting newly conquered bases on the Chinese coast and on Formosa with raids that sink two Fletchers to quick long lance attacks in bad weather at close range. Luckily no bombardments, and Boise has stabilised with 79 system, 52 float and 40 engine damage. She will eventually be patched up at Hong Kong, I hope.

The good included sinking a gaggle of small minelayers and transports around Formosa, as well as sweeping away all resistance at Takao with the three active P-38 groups in China. I'll have one more here soon, as well. I hope to start strategic night strikes with 4Es within days to hit Western Japanese bases. I'll begin attempting long range sweeps as well to see how they do over the Home Islands.

Troops took Tangshan, the base just to one side of Tientian near Peiping. This allows tracing without crossing the river in a shock to Tientien. I'll stack there soon, then at Peiping. The Chinese are strong now. The Soviets will begin to move on the Western flank of Manchuria to stretch forces there even further.

The Soviet strat bombing of Sapporo and Shikuka is still going well, with some fires destroying resources at Sapporo, and a few oil hits at Shikuka. Steady a she goes.

The fleet moves back into the area as a lot of IJN and merchants seem to be escaping. I had a restricted strike distance to avoid a big CAP trap, but missed a few good combat TFs as a result.

Got some today.

A bunch of small ships and DDs picked off early. Then some support ships. Finally the air search found IJN cruisers and DDs, punishing nearly all of them before the end of the day.

Looks like 5-6 DDs and a Cl sunk, with several more DDs damaged and CA Mikuma taking four hits.

I'l now go about the business of landing 50k troops on Formosa at Karenko. Taihoku should fall within the next week, constricting the Japanese sphere of influence considerably.

In the Central Pacific three more BBs, a few cruisers and DDs, and three more CVE are all heading to the Aleuts to prepare the invasions of the Northern Cent Pac. i wanted this to commence with the turn of the New Year but it's looking like mid-to-late January before the CVs can make it over to support now.

Dec 28, 1942

Ok. I'm back. It's been a few crazy days at work. Had the film festival (from classes I teach) on Friday and I was an absolute wreck after several days of little sleep and lots of stress. All done, and well received, so now back to the action.

This one has been crazy, as usual. After the solidification of Allied control in the area around Formosa the 28th the naval battles calm but the air battles are devastating. The Japanese set two powerful CAP traps with CAs as the lure, and the Allies take the bait. The CV and LBA strike force is decimated, and it's back to square one for SBD and Avengers pools. I hate running CVs with fighter heavy complements as a defensive only DS but that's what will have to happen for a little while now.

This kind of turn is what makes Lowpe such a dangerous and fun opponent. He is most dangerous with his back against the wall nd just doesn't seem to get down about previous losses. It didn't help that the multiple sweeps from Kukong against all Japanese southern bases didn't fly, and that the bombing raids on Shanghai were also rained out. All of it came together to turn the tables again and make for a tense few days ahead of unloading troops and solidifying gains on Formosa.

There are some positives though as a few more destroyers are sunk, brining the totals from the past few days to near 10, with several CA/CL sunk or in a bad state as well, and the KB still reeling. It's a short window, but if Formosa is solidified the Allies can change to an island hopping tactic leaning on LBA and surface combat TFs all of the way to the Home Islands.

The 29th is much quieter. A few good results on the ground, including a breakthrough at Liaoyuan. The Soviets get a 1:1 but lower forts to 1. In the clear, with the numbers advantage here, I'll go big next turn with a shock and see what happens.

On the Luzon the PI troops get a good result against an IJA division, probably low on supply, and now isolated on the Southern peninsula of the island. The Northern area is nearly all now in Allied hands, so this campaign is nearing its end.

Unloading continues at Karenko, and as soon as these TFs are done I'll shift to Taichu on the inside of Formosa, much more sheltered and supported by recently conquered Chinese bases.

Again a somewhat quieter turn. The big news is that Liaoyuan in Manchuria fell hard. Over 2,000 destroyed devices. Mukden may now be vulnerable as many big stacks of IJA troops are stalled protecting bases further West, and Changchun has a large protective stack that also can't move. Any reinforcements would have to come up from Korea.

With Peiping and Tientian also invested and about to be attacked, there is pressure on all sides in the North for the Japanese. Tanks are breaking through to finally cut the rail once and for all. It'll all be pockets soon with the Allied amphibious forces also planning some action to further separate Japanese defenses.

The Luzon mopup continues and not much else happens. It looks like the Japanese have conceded Formosa and have pulled back to the Okinawa area. I've got a huge naval force protecting Karenko for the next day or two, so if any more raiders attempt a strike there will be some carnage.

The Japanese get inside Allied defenses again. One TF ended up in the black zone between LR CAP and got nailed. It’s an Aussie brigade, and although 2/3 of the convoy was destroyed, at least the surviving ships picked up survivors and it should make Taichu tomorrow at flank speed.

The rollover show a BB TF at Naha, and the big guns will surround the Allied CVs for next turn just in case. I’ve got a few cruiser led TFs on patrol to each side of the hex just off of Karenko as well.

This was a tough one. The Japanese try a version of operation Ten-Ichigo as the Yamato is sent with only a CL and six DD flanking into the Allied fleet. In some kind of Powerball-like odds, the Yamato TF miraculously finds and engages the Allied CVs in spite of 25% mood and thunderstorms causing only 2k visibility. The pargest ship on the planet also somehow evaded the multiple radar equipped Allied surface cover TFs, including one led by four fast USN BBs and the old "R" class RN BBs, plus another with BB Valiant. A four CA TF is also attached to the CVs and all are set to react1-2 hexes. as are the multiple TFs patrolling all sides f this hex.

So, of course, the Yamato goes in guns blaring and sinks the quicker CV Saratoga, who can't escape into the murk quickly enough. Wasp takes some damage but is fine, and a CLAA is lost. At 2k Yamato should have rammed a DD or two before getting a shot off at a CV, but such is life in AE. Win some, lose some.

This will force me again to try to play small ball and island hop to the HI. Usually it's in the Solomons at this point in the war, but should be the same tactics. I mourned and raved for a few hours, then, just as my opponent has done so many times, shrugged it off and decided to fight that much harder.

For the next turn I'll get all ships over to the West side of Formosa covered by both the remaining CVs and LBA from four bases. A few will head to Bataan Island where there will be a smallish CAP to cover a retreating replenishment TF featuring CVE Long Island.

The Japanese built Taichu to a healthy level 6 airfield and level 4 port, so there are now a good number of air groups there flying LR CAP.

Subs will pursue and cover the area between Formosa and Okinawa.

Fingers crossed.

The Soviets have begun to surround and separate all of the big positions joining Northern China with Manchuria. Tanks will race to Chinchow inland and along the coastline. A large force is moving down toward Mukden. Both Tientsin and Peiping are heavily under siege, and Troops are moving down from long stuck positions just to the North as the IJA begins to release and retreat, most likely fearing encirclement.

If Chinchow falls the Soviets will look to move down the coast, capture a port, and allow an influx of Allied troops to flood over.

It is 1943. The Allied forces gain strength. It's been amazing to see how much is available to the more concentrated effort in China and the SRA. So many base forces and engineer units. So many US forces in genreral but also a bunch of units that are usually lost, including cheaply bought out Dutch units, units that are perfect for small actions nd garrisons that survived the fight at Singers and in Burma. On top of that the Chinese, and even though none are completely filled out, they're already a juggernaut.

It helps to remember this as the navy suffers yet another blow to morale and its capability. Today though, most of the hundreds of ships around Formosa make it to safety. A few do not get under the umbrella of CAP and are nailed, but the IJN suffers too with several air groups gutted again. The Bataan Island CAP does a good job, but 2 x 250kg bombs still make ti through onto CVE Long Island. I'll disband her and hope the CAP can work it's wonders tomorrow.

On the ground Nanking attackers get a 2:1 and drop forts to 1. This will be over soon. Tientsin and Peiping don't go as well, but more are on the way, and forts went to 3 at Tientsin. Once forts begin to lower each DA will get better. It's tough x4 territory.

No more significant air or naval action. The IJN does send raiders, but they sink only PG Soerabaja and PC Yarra. Two fun ships, but ultimately not very effective.

All of the Northern battles go for the Allies, opening up a path from two directions to Chinchow and the rail cut finally and for all time between Manchuria and China.

Nanking also falls. A big one with nearly another 1,000 destroyed devices. On to Shanghai.

I've been trying to get 4Es to fly 15 hexes to Strat bomb Fukuoka at night for four turns. No go. It's from a level 7 bases with plenty of supply and air support and now two HQs. Thunderstorms have been plaguing this whole side of the map though, so I think that's it.

Here are the major bases I'd like to aim for. The ones with red over the manpower are the more likely as I can bomb manpower effectively at night. I'll target other things periodically, but fires will gain more points.

No more action around Shanghai. The IJN bugged out. All of the Formosa air bases are hit hard. Pescadores remains a thorn, with it's strong fortress.

The CVE Long Island takes three little 50kg bomb hits on a night strike, but manages to shrug them off and will move toward Manila with 50 system and 30 float damage. Fingers crossed.

Taihoku falls with some IJN airdrops destroyed. This is good base that will allow a strong campaign against the rest of Formosa and the nearby islands over the next few weeks. Engineers moving in to clear things up.

There should be a North China Sea. Yellow Sea? Hmmm.

I sent the PTs in around Shanghai as there were a lot of transports trying to pull troops back across the North China Sea. They were only slightly effective, and about 6-7 were sunk for one torpedo hit on an AK. Still, it gives me a good idea of what the Japanese are doing up here. I'll keep them patrolling and also send in some RN CL to Hangchow to see if I can't catch one of these TFs on the way.

A DA at Shanghai reveals level 4 forts and yields double the losses for the Allies. About 1,500AV are moving fro Nanking, and all are about 40-60% prepped for Shanghai. I won't attack again until they're in hex. The Indian and British engineers should help with fort reduction.

The KB is spotted over near Kyushu. I think the major danger is gone for a few turns, but the Allies are not I an easy position now on the seas. This will still include some hot and heavy action in the East/North/Yellow China Sea areas.

The 6th saw the IJN send in BB Haruna and a CL with three DD to the Shanghai area. The Salmon got off four fish but no none hit. Not much else happened on the day. Some troops formerly of Nanking were busted up on their retreat.

On the 7th I sent in the RN CL TF from around Formosa in the hopes it would engage Haruna after her TF had bombarded at Hangchow. It looks like they found her before any bombardment, if there was one planned, and there was a knife fight at 2k yards again due to the persistent thunderstorms in the area. Two USN DDs were sunk in the close range battle, and Mauritius took a big shot from the BB and retired to Hangchow, where she'll rest for a while brining system damage down. Very fortunately, Haruna took one TT from a late Allied spread and was detached from the TF.

Yura and the DDs then engaged inconclusively with the remaining Allied ships, but Haruna was in range of the Albacore's from Chinchow. A first wave found her in the morning but failed to get a hit, The afternoon sortie tracked her down again and this time three of the planes managed to get a hit. Judging by the after turn rollover it appears Haruna is a few hexes off of Shanghai still. I'll send in the PTs and subs for tomorrow and see if they can push her over the edge.

The other positive on the day is that the 4E from China finally managed to fly a daylight mission after a week of weather cancellations. Completely unguarded Fukuoka takes some hard blows to it's infrastructure with over 80k fires started and a good 30k still burning by daylight. The damage is light now, but I'm guessing will be extensive by the time these are eventually put out. I'll try another strike tomorrow during the night phase to see if I can keep fires burning bright.

On the 8th all of the PTs near Shanghai sortied to find Haruna, and subs flanked in from the nearby East China Sea patrols. They found a CA and some DDs instead, and a lot found nothing. Four were sunk.

The KB showed up unexpectedly in the Shanghai hex, and the one Hurri sweep going there did well, getting about 1.5/1 against huge numbers on CAP.

That must have worried him a bit, or the mission was complete after Haruna moved farther out toward Nagasaki. On the 9th the KB retired but the PTs out in the Yellow Sea did find pay dirt. Again, a number were lost, but they found the Haruna TF and forced enough maneuvering, apparently, that she was confirmed sunk after the second engagement!

Albacore's also sink one good DD that strayed a bit too close.

Fires on Fukuoka indeed began to wipe out the big resource centers there after burning for another day, and have also hit a bit of HI/LI and other factories in the base. The bombers struck again in the night and continued to be set to night strikes on the 9th, but wouldn't fly again. Too bad. I'll keep them on again for the 10th.

In the North Chinchow is engaged and looks ready to fall to Soviet troops, which should cut to the cord finally between the Chinese Expeditionary Army and Manchuria's Kwantung Army. It may also give a nice route to move further South toward Korea.

Congrats on taking out Haruna - not the toughest IJN BB but one of the most useful to them.
You have used and lost a lot of PTs lately - are there still some in the pools?

There are. Not many, but maybe 10 not used. I've got enough to guard approaches to Hangchow and Taihoku.

It's interesting how th eAllied tools ca be used when they don't have to be spread over the entire Pacific. Even in early 43 there is an abundance.
