Put some recon, and moved some cruisers to bombard (they weren't spotted), but the Allies move the 50 heavy bombers and 50 aux away. Too bad.

But it is a night with no night bombing.

Feb 4th, 1943

Two days of light actions, but a squadron of Lilly IIb flew 8 hexes to attack some PT boats...never saw that before.

But then on the night of the 3rd Japan sorties two battleships to hinder a large convoy unloading south east of Formosa.

It was planned to be a hit and run skirmish, with threat set to low...but something went wrong -- perhaps too high an aggression leader in the Captains (I didn't double check). Should have put Kubota in charge (70Naval, 37 Aggression)

First fight, Nagato does nothing. Exeter takes one 36cm hit but other than that disappointing.

The Allies are moving the big girls nightly from Formosa to cover, and the IJN SAG should have retreated after the first fight, but didn't.

Nagato does next to nothing and sinks with lots of ammo, while Hyuga does great, putting lots of 36cm into the South Dakota (at least three bounced of her armor probably saving the ship), 3-4 into the Washington, and 1 into North Carolina.

Surely the SAG will retreat now...

Taking guesses on who the Allied Naval commander was!

Nope, and the British launch great torpedo spreads and punish Hyuga. Some solid superstructure hits, but all other shots bounce...and finally the SAG decides to retreat back to Okinawa.

Hyuga gets only one hex, and the Zero LRCAP, over the island not over the task force, manages to spoil four waves of attacks on her until some Fighter-Bombers slip thru and plant some 500 pounders on her which bounce.

I figured there was a good chance the raid would go sidewise, in which case the damaged ships would retreat back to the closest port...so I LRCAPed there to protect the splintered escort task forces. It has taken me many years & many lost ships to figure that out!

Big Soviet attack tank battle on the western line...and once again the 2nd Tank Division over performs! It is easy to see why the 1st and 2nd Tank Divisions are the best ground units Japan has.

Type 1 Medium tanks, and then in 6/44 the Type 3 Medium tanks are killers. Way over powered, and in real life I think none of the Type 3 ever saw action.

Well, Japan will be able to close off the pocket, but will never be able to hold...and the eastern defensive line will have to be evacuated.

Japan loses some light industry (26)...but there really is nothing that can stop a dedicated night bombing campaign.

For the Allies this is a twofer...the heavy bombers will shoot down several fighters or fighters bombers on night duty and score hits.

I beefed up the night time CAP and can't dent the bombers, 41 light industry gone, 4 Jake factories and 10 repair shipyards.

Simply put this early in the game there is no defense. The game should be over in 20-30 days, vp ratio is at 2.6 now but climbs .1 a day now, and will climb by .3 to .5 a day if he targets Osaka or Tokyo.

Feb 6th 1943

The previous turn Allies surge into Okinawa, a Kongo TF was one hex short of intercepting, and didn't react. They had a field day.

A fair bit of dogfights, at least we are starting to shoot down Migs now. Can't really dent the IL-2 which are simply devastating.

Our pocket is formed, but huge Soviet troops to relieve it...can't stop them, but hopefully it buys time for other troops to retreat and form up new defensive lines.

I guess it doesn't really matter much, 849 victory points gained by the Allies despite losing many ships and an even trade in the air. Night bombing is all that matters, and it cannot be stopped at this time.

Feb 8th, 1943

Still trying to slow down the Allied fleets operating south of Formosa, a Kongo goes in and performs very unsatisfactorily.

No damage dealt...

But then, the plucky Hei powers onto the waters around the American captured base, and plows right into four battleships!

In one of the longest running fights -- the Hei performs brilliantly putting multiple 36cm hits into three different battleships (however 2 bounced of the West Virginia's tower armor)...and then the Abukuma landed a torpedo half way thru the contest!

Now can she escape, and what if anything is following in the Hei's wake?

Not to be, the Hei, having ordered a retreat back to Okinawa, blunders into a British heavy cruiser squadron and the range closes!

But the fight isn't over yet.

Like the hunter she is, the Yamato steams into Allied dominated waters and closes with two British battleships!

Brazenly, she lets her bow be crossed, dodging the open salvo, and then returns fire on the Ramillies! A 46cm hit! The fire is enough, and a destroyer lets loose a torpedo spread and 3 hit the stricken Ramillies (only two of which detonate).

Seizing the initiative, Yamato closes to 2,000 yards and punishes the Ramillies with a broadside where seemingly every 46cm gun hit! Devastating damage down, emergency crews destroyed, fires raging, holed below the waterline multiple times, a magazine explsion, and the Ramillies is gone!

Can the Revenge live up to her name! No, the Yamato fires again and the horror stricken battleship again from 2,000 yards, and her accuracy, if not as good on the torpedo ravaged Ramillies, is good enough with a half dozen direct punishing 46cm hits! A few more broadsides and the Revenge joins the Ramillies!

The British are struck dumb, vainly trying to rescue sailor and escape the wrath of the Yamato!

The Yamato attempts to withdraw, but those brave British cruisers won't, allow. After the first exchange of fire, the Yamato orders a retreat...but the heavy cruisers chase.

In the long fight, the Yamato performs brilliantly, peppering the cruisers with secondary gunfire which is enough to leave several of them on fire before steaming off into the night!

Daylight comes, and the Allies spot an Japanese task force...and the first strike goes in...not a single bomber makes it thru! But can the Japanese fighters maintain their presence all day?

And is the Yamato there...it is her last known position!

The Havocs' are engaged both before and after making their runs, and score some machine gun hits on the destroyer strafing...but no bomb hits. They might have jettisoned their bombs prior to making the runs.
