That's cool. As long as it's good. Generally, the aircraft in the original movie weren't correct. Most of the Spitfires were later marks that didn't participate in the Battle of Britain and the German aircraft were actually Merlin engined Spanish ones. I'd like to see historically accurate aircraft and all the spectacular stuff possible with CGI.

I disagree vehemently, because I don't think CGI can yet replace miniatures, much less reality.

You have far greater aspirations for CGI, than I see possible. My best case scenario is that the CGI doesn't make me retch, while the story could put more focus on an actual historical Squadron. (Rather than the generic representative squadron using fictitious squadron code "AI")

Of that I am keenly aware. When I saw the original in the theater in 1969, I became a Battle of Britain fan. Needless to say, I did some studying in the 70s.

You of course refer to the Buchon 109s...

Well, we'll just have to agree to disagree on that. CGI is incredible now and the other stuff you can do with it, like massed formations, any camera angle you want and realistic explosions make it ideal for this movie.

Anyway, a combination of CGI and practical effects should be superior to any one technique by itself.

Set designers/carpenters can work marvels with paint and balsa wood. For shots of planes parked on the airfield I bet they could make accurate/realistic looking replicas. No computer generation needed there.

Peter Jackson is making (at some point...it's been delayed a lot) a remake of The Dambusters. He has had several Lancaster replicas made. They're highly detailed.

How many Battle of Britain movies does there need to be? Off you go Mr. Scott.
(Is Russell Crowe going to have a cameo as Churchill?)

Now it he was going to make a Bismarck movie in color then I might go see it.

If they make this, doesn't that make two? Isn't this the same number as Pearl Harbor - and would be the same number as Bismarck if they made another of that film.....

A new Sink the Bismarck would be good too though

Of course the less said about the latter Pearl Harbor movie the better. With modern special effects, there's potential for plenty of spectacular new WW2 movies. One on the St Nazaire raid would be an excellent story to explore.

Here's a Jeremy Clarkson documentary about it...

Ridley Scott -like Spielberg and few others- is synonymous with very high quallity. A movie I won't be missing.

Let's hope Ridley doesn't read this thread! He'll probably just give up and go home and we'll be left with no movie at all...

I am also looking at all those details. But, at least, in the first movie, this was indeed me109 and spitfire.
There are plenty of war movies out there where planes (or tanks) are not even the good ones.

There is a lot of room to explore with this movie besides just the air combat alone. The psychological effects on the pilots, the bombing effects on the citizens taking cover in the subway tunnels, the fatigue of mission after mission after mission, what happened to pilots shot down over land and water, volunteers from other countries, fire fighting after the raids, role radar played. Lots to explore here.

If there is to be a heavy focus on the air to air battles, lets hope Scott has some new, innovative ideas on how to film the scene where the action is comprehensible to the watching audience. Its hard to follow the action in a dog fight scene for too long and 90-120 minute movie is a lot of time to fill.

Not exactly. The only movie I'm familiar with that dealt with the subject of the Pearl Harbor attacks was Tora, Tora, Tora.

Now that you mention it, there was a steaming pile of fetid guano with the title Pearl Harbor from a few years back. That wasn't so much a movie as a video series to aid in induction of emesis amongst poisoning victims. In that sense, it's served its purpose oh so well! I'm getting nauseous just thinking about it.

Interesting that all of what you list was covered (to a greater or lesser extent) in the 1969 film. I agree, there is tons to explore in this period and every chance of another damn good film.

Agreed. And can we leave out the seemingly ubiquitous unrequited love interest side plot for once? Seems like you can't make a war movie these days without some such nonsense. Less tonsil hockey, more shootin' Jerry.

The word on the street is that Ridley Scott's new Battle of Britain film is to be a prequal for Pearl Harbor and will star Affleck and Damon and will show the true story of how Rafw McCauley won the battle.

I think it's high time their stories get told (and retold...and embellished perhaps just a bit...and told again...and made out of whole cloth...then told again).

Well, at least Robin Hood: Men in Tights let some of the pressure off of him after that hot mess. Mobius: are you telling me that Kevin Costner's accent isn't English?
