The number of balloons at a base are determined by the size of the port and airfield but are dependent on the fortification level. The higher the fortification, the more balloons. No forts, no balloons.

Nice cleanup at CRB.
Could those bombardment TFs hitting Vinh be reloading at Samah, HK or even Takao? Heck, with AKEs he could even use Kiungshan, Pakhoi or Kwangchowan!

BKK is not a great port in the 1940s because of the marshlands south of it that limit the size of ships that can go there (not sure if that is modeled in the game as an estuary). Even modern day I don't think big ships go up there. There is better land for a port to the east so it is a short distance to ship goods to BKK. I presume that is why it is not worth much in the strategic VP multiplier. Now Saigon, on the other hand, gets an X50 multiplier!

Here you go.

I thought there was a minimum size for a base to have barrage balloons? Anyway Nagoya and Gifu are both size 3 airfields, smaller than I expected. I'm doing the turn right now and selecting a target (about 2/3 of the B-29's are ready to fly, which I figure is going to be a good long term average to send missions).

Samah I did not recon but it seemed he wasn't using there. Pakhoi was possible so I mined it by air. Kwangchowan or Kiungshan also possible, but when I finally got a glimpse of the withdrawing ships last turn it looks to be Hong Kong.

What is BKK?

That is a beautiful map! Specifically, a good position for the Allies.

That's just an ASW group near Hainan. The cruisers and battleships, although unspotted, are surely at Hong Kong rearming. I have no idea where the carriers are.

• Our carrier soiree was effective in keeping those targets bottled up. Again tomorrow, as there are plenty of targets left.

• In recent days we've had the luxury of keeping a couple of squadrons on LRCAP over Bangkok. I haven't checked every day, but we've been bagging Ki-67-Ia (T) Peggy pretty regularly without seeing them in battle, so I assume they are bringing supplies into Bangkok. Today we got 29 air to air, 31 lost total on the day. Sweet!

• The first of those additional two divisions should be in Vinh in 4 days, the other division is about a day behind. So we could assault with one additional division in 5 days, or two in 6 days. I am going to move in one additional Bde to aid the assault 5 days from now. I really want to beat the next bombardment and our carriers cannot stay on station too long. The second additional division will be available for a rolling attack (2nd day in a row), along with whatever other units are deemed in good enough shape and supply. That is usually very hard on the defenders.

• The fleet will move to a position 5 hexes away, 1 hex SW of Samah. An RN based cruiser TF with short legged destroyers will withdraw instead.

• Biding our time regarding the next assault at Bangkok.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia

• Nagoya Manpower, 5,000 ft, night.

Complete combat report attached.

Manpower is worth bombing if it is greater than 8...otherwise target the individual resource/factory.

You should be working on destroying all vehicle factories as a very high priority as there aren't that many. Warship factories to reduce his ability to make destroyers and subs, select engines, etc., etc.

PS: very pleased to see the Nick C...not every JFB goes for that plane, benefit is it uses a different engine.

PPS: You are just racking up the kills.

OK, but I recall a general feeling (not a standard HR, I hate that concept) that night bombing was better limited to Manpower for better playability for both players. (Provided that's true) it looks like Gifu is a daylight only target.

So I implied, but did not so clearly ask...

What are your opinions about nighttime strategic bombing? Limited to Manpower or not? Etc.

I just saw your discussion with Lowpe and concluded that is what you were asking.
I have not great expertise on the subject other than wanting to use experienced pilots where opposition is expected and send the less experienced ones where opposition is light. Your call on what that would mean in your situation.

Lowpe raises an interesting point about bombing vehicle factories. I have always felt that the Allies have enough anti-tank stuff to not worry too much about Japan producing more tanks, even the good ones they get late in the war. You may feel differently.

It is not that the late war IJA tanks are a threat, it is that they are some of the best Japanese anti-tank weapons around on defense, which makes Allied tanks not operate as solidly. I found them to be very overpowered, able to stop Allied armored assaults in good terrain, and they benefit in being about the last units targeted in naval bombardments and their speed makes them great fire brigades.

Denying their use to Japan greatly hinders Japanese tactical defensive options and speeds up your offensives with armored units.

It makes some sense to me, but I have never had that HR.

It might be hard to nail a size 20 engine factory but how about a size 150+? or a size 900 resource hex? Seems that would be doable at night and you should just exercise your own judgement.

I just trashed a size 20 LI factory hex at night, but it took a few tries including once during daylight.

It would be interesting to discuss this at game start...as it might dictate overall Japanese building.

Any idea of damage being done and VP being accumulated?

Some of these points came from 29 damage (observed by recon) damage to the George factory at Gifu.

This of course is incomplete since a significant strike just took place, and fires are still burning.

He's producing Shindens already? Or could that just be researching them?

It is hard to track strategic damage done to bases...I like to take pictures of them and post them in the AAR so I can go back and check...

Did you run into balloons?

You either want to run the math and make sure you are achieving a good ratio of VP or your loss of B29s is accomplishing a goal that synergizes with your overall tactics and strategies.

If you focus on Shindens you can get them end of 1944.

Well, with the port and the airfield numbers, if there were forts there should be balloons. A good reason to start building the fortifications in Japan early. I am sure that level 9 forts, while expensive, should prove costly to lower level attacks by 4Es.

• With luck, in 2 days the first of the additional divisions will make Vinh then general attack on the 3rd day. The other division is still about a day behind. If so, I still hope conditions will be right for a rolling attack.

• A number of refugees from Cam Ranh Bay are in two convoys heading east toward the gap between Formosa and the Philippines. The fleet will move southeast to intercept them, but also to be visibly in the area and dissuade the IJN cruisers and battleships from taking up operations against or positions at Vinh. The fleet is currently 10 hexes from Hong Kong (no recon) and will try to keep as far away as possible. Attack aircraft are still set for range 3, so we might not get the convoys, but we will sure will frighten them.

• Our next assault at Prachuap Khiri Khan will be somewhat over a week away.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia

1944 October 06

Fleet movement tomorrow. 10 hexes from Clark Field and 10 hexes from Hong Kong. Obviously I want to avoid a massive multipronged set of strikes if IJN carriers appear.
