Overall

• No contact with enemy carriers or battleships.

• Investigating why a new aircraft only produced 2 this month, I found that all the factories at Los Angeles had production set to KEEP and OFF, and repair was set to off. Changed all of those to match other cities.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• A whole bunch of CVE just finished upgrades at Pearl Harbor and are leaving for the Marianas. Other, newer CVE just finished upgrading at Portland and will do likewise, stopping at Pearl Harbor to pick up a stronger escort.

Overall

• A fleet carrier finished repairs and is heading for the Marianas.

• The first of the assault units for Truck is beginning combat loading.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

Philippines

• The additional support units are unloading at Dadjangas now.

• It is possible, based solely on submarine detection info, that enemy carriers are just north of Luzon.

China

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina

• In the sync bug version of this ground battle fortifications were reduced to 4 but Imperial casualties were lower and ours were higher. I'm satisfied with the low proportion of destroyed squads for us, but of course I want fortification reductions.

• 1 of the 2 new Bdes has marched to Bangkok, the other 2 will arrive tomorrow. The units which attacked are recovering extremely well so I expect they will gain back AV quickly in the coming days. I have decided to move the Indian 18th Cavalry Rgt to Ayuthia for a few days to recover disabled devices, and I am giving them a new CO.

• Now look like 3 units; 2,040 troops; 11 guns; 5 AFV south of Vinh. No movement is noted. There is also a unit with 6,700 troops and 35 guns just NW of Vinh, call it a Bde. They were NE of Vinh so could have moved into Vinh from that direction. I think they moved to the west to establish a defensive position and make it more difficult for us to cut off the city.

• 2,766 AV at Bangkok, assault tomorrow.

• The 3 units south of Vinh now scout as 2,740 troops, 19 guns, 4 AFV. Somebody watered them.

• 146 fighters at Cam Ranh Bay.

• One group of the troop transports seen yesterday is approaching Cam Ranh Bay. It's possible the other one is the convoy there already, but search results are inconclusive. After the fleet carriers take on more fuel (two days at least) I am considering sending them into the South China Sea to menace those transports. The transports could just be slipping along the coast toward Bangkok. As far as Cam Ranh Bay itself, the Empire might ferry troops cut off there up toward China.

• 3 Bdes and 2 arty units loading at Colombo for Sabang.

• The B-24's will go back on line tomorrow (from brief R&R), starting with the airfield then the port at Vinh. If recon of Haiphong shows anything interesting we will have to arrange for sweeps to help out as there with the 43 enemy fighters present. In any event, closing the port at Haiphong would impede troops being ferried there from Cam Ranh Bay.

• The Empire continues sailing small ships into Bangkok, undoubtedly with supplies for the recalcitrant squatters there. We just mined the harbor vis sub (should have done that earlier with aircraft, didn't think of it) and several subs are about to take up station outside the Bangkok harbor.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia

• Cost of torpedoes: more than $12,000 each.

• Tomorrow recon commences on all bases on Kyushu, Shikoku, and Honshu which are within 35 hexes of Guam, 12 bases total. Basically everything on a line with Tokyo and one hex south of Tokyo.

• Tomorrow recon also begins on Gifu, and in the coming days I hope to also recon Osaka, and Kobe. Those places can be reached from Saipan and Tinian, but not Guam until a longer range B-29 model is deployed.

• Tomorrow recon begins on Naha, Nago, and Kume-jima.

• Tomorrow recon begins on Karenko, Taihoku, and Taichu.

Are you using your Replenishment carriers in their intended role?

If so, you can quickly replenish the lost airframes, far more quickly than your opponent can.

If you are not using them in the intended role then you have no advantage over your opponent.

I think I may be the only player here who actually uses them as a replenishment resource.

Nice to see someone appreciates the right tool for the right job.

witpqs: Enemy battleships are possibly at Haiphong, but recon does not show them (search covering Haiphong will commence tomorrow).
In addition to search, add Recon if you can in case they disbanded in port. I see from your later comments that rearming of Yamato is a question - that wouldn't require her to disband, but the AKEs serving her likely would be.

And yes, do send all the US Carriers to a point halfway between CRB and Haiphong to catch troopships or BBs or KBs! Your fans love carrier battles!

That is so true!

So send them - win or lose!

• We did reduce fortifications this time but what a wallop in casualties, luckily mostly disabled. Units will be rotated to Ayuthia for recovery as advisable.

• No battleships at Haiphong.

• In 1 or 2 days the Chinese Army 96th Division will be in Vinh and we will assault then. In addition to AA cover and two arty units, there are 2 divisions leaving Udon Thani for Vinh, and 2 Bdes which will engage the would be reinforcements coming from the south.

• An infantry Bde and a para Bde will begin working their way south from Pakse tomorrow with an attack on the small unit in the jungle 1 hex SE of Pakse.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia

• Tomorrow, B-29 target: Gifu N1K5-j George factory, shows as 31(0) on recon but as 34 on target selection, I am guessing an FOW leak. Gifu has only 33 guns showing from recon (admittedly 1 day of recon), so the beasts will go in at 8,000 ft.

• Most of the other recon's of the HI came up partial, as expected. We await extended observation.

I doubt I could see 8000 feet in moderate rain just driving down the road! At least those B-29 drivers got some experience in bombing via radar!

I don't know if night bombing is a viable thing at this point. Might be OK to put some of the least fatigued units on it to check out the night fighter readiness of Japan, without really expecting a lot of results in the raids. I played Downfall a long time ago and IIRC the starting experience of the B-29 units was not great.

When you transfer in a bunch of new pilots, does the unit take a hit on experience because the newbies changed aircraft? Or is that only when a new plane comes to the unit?

It goes by the pilots.

When I am adding pilots they are trained from the pool, but experience is the thing lacking. I like to pull pilots from B-24's but that leaves those squadrons using basically untrained pilots in full and hurts forward progress.

You've given me an idea. Night bombing to help give the B-29 pilots experience without so much fighter opposition.

This coming turn I am processing now (Oct 1) a bunch of 7-plane groups increased to 10.

If there are bypassed enemy bases, those could be the life fire bombing range for training pilots.

Heretic! Night bombing is always viable for the Allies. It should be pursued the entire game. Just have to be careful on port and runway strikes at night not to over do it and you can't overdue night strategic bombing.

Results like those are why I like Vinh...forts 2 is pitiful though, should be 5 at least. Some engineers digging in there from 1941 make it very easy to achieve.

Looks like 126 strategic points, but tracker doesn't seem to give that. IIRC I had 60 last turn and now I have 186. Recon shows Manpower damage, but very little factory damage. Maybe it will show as turns progress.

Still doing the turn now.

Correction: Damage looks like 2 Manpower, 37 Light Industry, and 2 Shinden.

Yeah, the industry damage comes from the fires, which must not get assessed until the end of the turn.

EDIT: If the fires persist, a bit more industry damage should happen too!

I checked out your full combat report...

Night bombing at Nagoya:

Severe Storms, One Tojo IIa squadron on patrol at 9k.

All your bombers went in at 8k.

Tip: Try varying your squadrons +-2k from you main attack level. If you really want to get sophisticated, have one bomb from 20K, and if AA is weak try 2k especially if balloons aren't present. You want to stretch the CAP...

Hmm.

I'll have to look but Nagoya must have balloons being a big base.

2K with B-29's - big ones, man!

• The IJN cruisers and battleships which just bombarded Vinh appear heading through the strait between Hainan Island and the mainland. Since Pakhoi port is as big as Kwangchowan port, the only reason to do that is the port at Hong Kong.

• The B-24's did mine the port at Pakhoi.

• The bombardments are stinging now. What might be done about it? The kamikazes all came from Cam Ranh Bay.

• The advance continues south of Pakhoi.

• We have a Bde moving toward the north of Hue, hopefully to trouble the enemy units south of Vinh.

• The fleet will move 6 hexes NE tomorrow. Dive bomber and torpedo bomber ranges have been set to 3.

• There are 48 more fighters at Cam Ranh Bay. P-38's will sweep and the B-24's will hit the port, hoping to get some of the 30 ships present.

• I would love to get in an attack at Vinh with the 2 divisions now en route and the other units already in the city recovered from the bombardments, but that will depend upon what actions we prompt the IJN into taking.

• Can you believe Bangkok is only worth 16 points?

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia

• Same.
