1944 December 08

Today's air losses. Our fighters sweeps did almost 2 to 1 (93 to 47), and considering that the P-51D sweeps (by far our fastest) went in last when there were few CAP to destroy, I think we did well. Only 15 B-29's were lost, light losses for heavy air opposition and good factory hits.

I take it the number of factory points equals the monthly quantity of production (unless the factory was doing research)?

Yes. The research factories do not research if they are damaged.

repaired factories produce 1 plane per month per point unless if fully repaired and doing r&d where they produce 1 point r&d per day or 2 with engine bonus.

I suggest you expand your recon to cover large plane building bases...so you can continue to target his third and fourth generation fighters. Ki83 in production now might make you life more difficult as he probably has at least 150 factories churning them out less what you damaged today.

If you target the night fighter production too, it will help as Japan seems to me to be unprepared there...

Congratulations, you have discovered the joy of daytime raids coordinated with Deathstar sweeps. Hard to go back to night bombing, but you should never stop night bombing as it spreads Japans defenses thinly even if you only do it lightly on manpower and bigger bases.

As you get closer you get more options on who to allocate attacking bomber squadrons.

You are in the air war grind...check your pilot training...and keep attriting his fighters and NF every chance you get. Don't let him recover as he can only reinforce a squadron with 12 planes per week.

If the air unit is broken down into thirds, each third can take replacements including four spares.

Unless you have some underhanded method of doing it, that exploit was patched years ago. A/B/C units can take 4 planes each and 4 in reserve. I see, you are adding each plane individually.

Most likely he doesn't do that. If he does, I chalk it up to the alien DNA.

I'll get more info from additional 2E recon units once I have Chichi-jima and Haha-jima. Right now I get everything in the eastern half as far north as Kobe-Osaka/Kyoto etc. All the recon units work as 1/3's. They take a beating from defenses so in spite of 90% Rest to ensure only 1 plane files each day to a target I still have lots in maintenance and plenty of target-days with no recon as the entire 1/3 is repairing or making ready replacements.

I do have a 4EB group doing recon of 3 bases on Formosa for future ops, plus Okinawa. Maybe I'll reallocate the unit targeted on Formosa and let that recon lapse until we take Okinawa.

I think I got some Ki-83 factories at another location, but if he started with that many then he's got way over 100 still producing. Yikes.

I think I'm going to make a spreadsheet or something with each city's strategic asset status.

I can't do too many carrier-borne fighter sweeps until his carriers are really finished. It was easy this time because I knew where (at least the bulk of) his carriers were. It was also a good way to encourage him to keep them in the HI from now on. I am also thin on high quality reserve pilots for USN. It will help to embark more USMC units with Corsairs and use those for the sweeps.

Never said it would be easy!

The losses in recon planes intrigues me, I didn't suffer that against M-M, or at least as I recall.

Are the pilots good? What is the altitude? What are the air frames?

5 size 30 is probably the minimum he has on the 83...probably as many as 210 or more. He might have a full squadron at Tokyo -- 49 planes.

Loss in recon planes are not excessive, but when you add together a few losses along with damaged planes and fatigued airframes (especially Service Rating 4 for the 4E models) there are periods where a recon target goes dark unless I put multiple 1/3 groups on it. And that, of course, would reduce the number of recon targets I was looking at.

I am putting together a spreadsheet with pull down list for base, industry, and aircraft factories. The list of bases I have. I'm using a complete list of bases for convenience, plus the fact that a number of bases might be owned by Japan.

The factories list is a little different. Regardless of how it displays in-game, it looks like they are kept in two separate places. First is a list of what I am calling industries. Notice that aircraft engines are included with these. Does this look like a good/complete list? Aircraft is separate, in the next post.

Impressive initiative....

Don't think you need Ohka on it.

Will you be able to determine beginning level at game start and be able to handle switches...for example arms going vehicle, or oscar to frank conversion, etc. perhaps track fire destroyed or conquered/reconquered losses?

No, no access to that. This is strictly a spreadsheet with drop down lists so I can record recon observations with less typing. Obviously I'll share it with anyone who wants it. The notion is I will be able to look at see where all the Frank factories are (which ones I have seen at least), etc.

Here is a sample. It's easy with a SUMIF() function in a cell to tally up all the items of a particular type.

Between invasions, maybe send the DeathStar to waters off Northern Honshu to strike against factories as well as to protect fast BBs, CAs, and Cls bombarding bases with industry. Keep the enemy air units honest . . .

I don't think I have all the aircraft factories. That might be the initial list. I have to keep looking and grab all the aircraft types then.

• Hah-jima invasion delayed a day because one TF turned for home after making station. Bloody staff.

• Only very minor damage is showing up at Tokyo via recon today. Hopefully that will update tomorrow. Weather was worse than forecast and was a hindrance.

• Of course Chichi-jima is utterly trashed. We'll get it repaired and max out the airfield as soon as possible, currently size 2(0). The ground assault will continue tomorrow. Engineers will be brought in ASAP.

• Tomorrow 3 squadrons of P-51D will sweep Hamamatsu. Recon indicates 133 fighters present.

• We are sending destroyers to raid shipping at Daichi Soto.

Complete combat report attached.

Air losses. We paid the expected price for a snap, fatigue influenced raid. 15 of the Superfortresses were lost to operational mishaps.

Tokyo from the spreadsheet, just for show and tell. I listed all the industry and factories, but that isn't necessary, I could have only listed the ones I want to track.

Osaka, also from the spreadsheet. Ditto the caveat in the post above.

I've entered the southernmost 3 rows of bases in the Home Islands. Recon of Tsu and Maebashi is partial because of aircraft maintenance/repairs. Tsu has 262 undetermined aircraft factories. Maebashi has 127 undetermined engine factories and 452 undetermined aircraft factories.

As you can see from the totals for only those aircraft I'm currently interested in, when you add in the unknowns from Tsu and Maebashi and consider all the unknowns not yet tallied, things are pretty scary!

Deep breath!

Don't worry about the kikka...their short range makes them next to worthless.

The George and 83 are planes he can sweep with effectively making them more dangerous than the others. The 83 is more dangerous than the George if used correctly.

After that the Frank R and Sam, I give the nod to the Frank R as currently there are tons of size 49 plane squadrons that can fly it, has better legs and a little faster but slightly weaker guns but more accurate. If he super sized Sam squadrons to 80-90 planes they get tough.

The Shinden, never used it, a solid and strong defender so I would target it after the 83...

Lots of visible 43 engines to destroy...if he is making a ton of 83, accelerating the shinden, sam, 83, you definitely can see a trend here.

There can be rather large plane factory in China....sad to say.
