What are we to discern from your last picture? I obviously am missing something AFB related!

I should have selected the hex so it would have been highlighted... The enemy PB toward the lower left hand corner of the picture. The pic is just so you can see where it is relative to everything else.

I sort of wonder if a small incursion is meant to trigger a carrier strike; perhaps the Empire has no info on the whereabouts of our carriers?

Or he is looking for holes in your search coverage.

Yeah, I sorta wondered about that too. The PB spent two days in the same spot, supporting the idea he wanted it to be seen. I mean a lone PB is not exactly an ambush force. I have also wondered if it sat there as bait because he knows how far my planes can search: a couple of my carriers or some cruisers show up to sink it and KB1 charges in some just outside of search coverage.

I am wondering if he plans any further expansion into the South Pacific. He's only gone to the Solomon Islands and no further in that area; the Gilbert Islands haven't been cleaned up yet. Maybe he's trying to get an idea of my carriers' location before he commits. He knows there are summer upgrades for the Lexington's and the Yorktown's. He doesn't (yet) know I am deferring them.

Maybe you could fool him - send your Omaha CLs 6 hexes east of the PB then put their float planes on naval attack at 100 feet ... PBs have poor AA and poor damage control.

I want to confirm something important to preparing for the upcoming operation: carriers can still conduct normal operations with up to 115% of their rated aircraft complement, right?

In other words, Lex has capacity 90, so she can operate up to 90 + 13.5 = 103 aircraft, right?

I looked it up before and I posted it in a thread. Yes, up to 115% but with a supposed increase in Ops losses

edited to include the link where this was discussed:

CV has 1 too many planes

In other words, Lex has capacity 90, so she can operate up to 90 + 13.5 = 103 aircraft, right?
That is correct according to the manual.

I buy it out early when it is weak with a lot of devices disabled and use if for garrison while it is training.

It might just be the Babes scenarios have a little more research in the land TOE's, but this unit withdraws in 307 days. At least the equipment will go to experienced units.

In my game I gave 267th Tank Bde a good leader (with good admin skill) and put it in Madras with lots of supply and a regional HQ. It took until December 1942 to get morale 90 and experience 30.
But by then most of the TOE had filled out/recovered from disablement and I felt the tanks would tear up IJA tanks and troops without A/T guns. Might be a good unit to use in a strategic reserve role if the Japanese move into India.

Agreed. I'm just going to let it sit there and... improve.

At this point I doubt India is a target, although we are still early enough so the Empire has much, much power to project where it chooses.

Those units that withdraw I usually don't buy them out and those Indian units I use for garrison duty.

Raleigh should be alright if we can keep the subs away from her. Two DD have been ordered to join up with Raleigh and her lone escort.

• All operational B-17's at Cloncurry are ordered to attack troops at Katherine tomorrow. A B-26 Sqn is moving from Alice Springs to Tennant Creek and will join in (3,000 ft). The P-39 Sqn at Daly Waters will make a ground attack at 1,000 ft.

• Sub Seawolf has been guarding Darwin harbor to ambush any invasion convoy; she will move to intercept the IJN carriers to the west.

• There is a convoy of at least 5x xAP at Derby.

• The old CL TF is moving east to see if they can get close enough to engage the convoy at Derby without being detected.

1942 June 27

Air losses today looked pretty good and might help us in the air over Katherine tomorrow.

Probably impossible to track, but I'd like to know if you think you have success
airlifting to Sian. I'm in a deeper hole there and in the last several days the whole
China thing has gotten shaky on the supply side. I did shift my meager three
C47 squadrons to Katha for 72 hours but its seems like a little trickle unlikely
to restore stocks there. I place them back on the hump rout shortly. The small
Chinese airlift capacity is about spent so staging a squadron on US C47s is
interesting. Inquiring minds.....

No. I've noticed that the bombers do not fly past their Normal range with supplies into Sian, but they did fly to their Extended range to drop supplies to the troops in the hex outside Sian. Maybe that's a bug? I haven't reported it yet but there is no one working on bugs so I think I'll look more and see if I can notice anything before I do.

On its first day at Changtu that C-47 Sqn also did not fly supplies to Sian and I don't know why.

Even so it would take quite an airlift to bring adequate supply there and I don't have the aircraft for that.

I am pretty sure the transports can fly supplies further on an air drop mission than on a runway to runway mission. Why? Because IRL take-off and landing use far more fuel per mile than cruising at altitude. I think the developers tried to model this.

Don't forget that Mr. Kane once turned China into a viable theatre by flying in supply using every transport and bomber he could muster.

Transports in the game can fly supplies to 1/2 their Maximum range (beyond even Extended range). They can only para-drop troops to either (I forget which) Normal or Extended range.

If bombers are meant to be more limited when used as transports, OK, but what is the intent (Normal or Extended range for ferrying and dropping supplies)? If I know that I can see if there is anything I should report.

So when I sent off the turn a couple of days ago I didn't attach the file. Walter looks this afternoon; fires off a message; I see the message tonight when we get in; too late for a turn. Tickets purchased for today will be refunded.

Japanese forces CAPTURE Katherine !!!

Overall
• KB2: 4x CVE, 25F, 20B is 4 hexes WSW of Darwin.

• ASW TF's definitely DO react to enemy submarines. They do not attack on the reaction, but are then in a better position to attack during later phases and turns. There are now 6 ASW TF in hex with an enemy submarine near Hawaii and 1 ASW TF 1 hex away. Most of those ASW TF's reacted to get there.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• Enemy sub activity near Pearl Harbor, Johnston Island, San Francisco.

• All convoys report no contacts.

• If nothing else two IJN sub crews now have damaged hearing.

• Three battleships came ready at Pearl Harbor; one more requires four days to finish upgrades. North Carolina should arrive at Pearl Harbor in about a week.

Pacific
• Enemy sub activity near Funafuti.

• All convoys report no contacts.

• It looks as though the Imperial depth charges are too shallow. I hope no politician gives a newspaper interview and blabs about it.

• The armoured units got fairly shattered at Katherine. The 8th Cav Recce Rgt is at 40/54% with only two light tanks remaining, one of them disabled. They are heading west as fast as possible. The 1st Tank Bn is at 21/45% with 11x Matilda II, 6 of them disabled. They are heading east as fast as possible. The infantry Bn and base force will stand their ground. They cannot hold but if the weather improves they will gain a couple of extra days before they meet a harried foe. The other armoured units mentioned previously are still closing on the area from their assigned avenues of approach and we might yet give the Empire a well deserved defeat at Katherine. The road from Wyndham to Katherine will be cut tomorrow and so will the road east of Nookanbah. Also, another Armoured Rgt is being committed to the area.

• We are moving the old CL TF to a position 11 hexes from today's KB2 sighting. No idea if they will hang around with Katherine now in Imperial hands. Without any air search they will rely on Seawolf to provide position info on KB2.

• Tenedos is gone and Electra is heavily damaged. Express is also shot up quite a bit. All are heading for Perth. Ammo is low too.

• We lost 5x B-17's and 2x B-26's versus 5x Zero's and 1x Nick. Heavy rains kept the P-39D's grounded.

• Tomorrow the B-17's will go for the troops again; the B-26's will hit the airfield; the P-39's will sweep.

• The 8th Cav Recce was heading west but will head NW along the road because an enemy unit is seen heading into that western hex from Katherine; we'll let them cross the river into nothing. Both the 8th cav and 1st Tank Bn will need the bombers to slow enemy movement again if they are to get away. In two days we will have a Tank Bn west of Katherine and an armoured Rgt SW of Katherine. Will their appearance change the Imperials' movement plans? A tank Bn has also made the road 3 hexes east of Nookanbah and is now wheeling left toward that town.

• KB2 tucked tight into the coast to avoid Seawolf; Seawolf is adjusting.

Amphibious TF 193 offshore of Pamekasan
Changsha, Sian, Mengtze, Urumchi are invested.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall
• KB2 3 hexes WSW of Darwin: 2x DD, 3x CVE; 20F, 17B.

• The USN fleet CV fighter groups have expanded to size 36. Looks like no USMC fighter groups will be taken aboard. Due to short pools, we have to upgrade two of the squadrons to F4F-4. We will also need a few days' production to fill out all groups to maximum.

• No signs of a major concentration of IJN fleet carriers. We certainly want to see them someplace far, far away for Cantankerous Olfactory.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii
• Enemy sub activity near Pearl Harbor, San Francisco.

• All convoys report no contacts.

• I guess they are trying to keep us honest.

So your cross-country unit finally got on the road to Derby, cutting off his supply line for the unit he had marching eastwards. Any idea if he knows your troops are there?

• Enemy sub activity near San Francisco, Johnston Island.

• All convoys report no contacts.

Pacific
• No enemy sub activity reported.

• All convoys report no contacts. In a homeward bound convoy one tanker was badly holed in a collision with another tanker and will proceed alone to allow the convoy to maintain speed.

• Pago Pago would make a tough target now; I doubt he will go for it.

1942 July 01

Let's see if two units move out of Katherine this next turn. Our B-17's are doing a great job of slowing them down.

Question : Have you identified the source of the CAP over Katherine ?

4 Zero's and 1 Nick you post above

Derby seems too far away / Wyndham does show any spotting of an airfield although that could be a search deficiency. Katherine itself seems bereft of any air base.

Honorable opponent must be taking atrocious losses operationally in addition to air losses.

In terms of investment facing the same situation you wonder if it is worth it trying to extract those troops ?
