any "noise" at Truk?
Do you have any subs around?
I like the plan, I think it is a seldom seen move given the time frame and the typical
deployments of allied players.
Oh yeah, whats Monkey telling you about the opposition?

How many such targets have you seen in mid-42 and how did they fare?
Oh yeah, whats Monkey telling you about the opposition?
No reinforcements of target locations picked up from SigInt.

This is one time it may not be a bad thing to be "over a barrel".
I think that picture is from a Miss America pageant from the 20's.

Cantankerous Olfactory.

Awfully enlightening. So you have some amphibious units aimed at the eastern Marshalls? But they don't have troops much? And your approach is based on a few ships twenty or more hexes away?

You AFBs are simply too devious as I cannot fathom what is going on. So, since I am reading this AAR, and Andav isn't it would be fair to say he will be surprised as well.

Seriously, my next game has to be as the Allies so I can understand this.

I am pretty busy with RL stuff, but late last evening and now I am getting some time on the turn.

Formal post when it's ready, some tidbits...

Carrier sighting near Eniwetok?! I think it is a damaged AV making its way toward Truk.

Chasing away that pesky snooper sub means 23 destroyers plus Long Island will get back to PH to refuel day after tomorrow. I will start the convoys out tomorrow to save time because they are slower anyway. There are 13 destroyers at PH, 10 BB, 9 CA, 3 CL together with the 23 DD's returning to refuel to be allocated for bombardment and surface combat duty. Whatever TF's I create at first will get modified heavily at sea. I envision D-Day bombardments at each target being by a single BB both to have others available for subsequent days if needed and to have them available for surface combat. I presume the latter will be needed. You will recall Godzilla arose from the Marshall Islands.

I know, you've been spending so much time fighting of the Russian hordes you haven't been keeping up. I have confirmation of no DL 23 hexes out, not 20. It would hardly be sporting to try and dash in from only 20 hexes out.

Ships? Who needs ships? Our guys are swimming there. They might be swimming back so they might as well get used to it.

Yes, you see only a few troops on those amphib ships because I meant them to be decoys while the guys swam in from the other sides of the islands. Now I open the turn and see that all those convoys have loaded completely! Insubordination, I tell you!

Current score is 18,104 to 7,433, just over 2.4 to 1. Any battle which goes against me by 2 to 1 or less but elevates the numbers (i.e. is bloody enough) will help stave of auto-victory and get an attrition battle rolling. I have the largest concentration of my subs in those waters so as to both aid the battle and be available to vector in on cripples.

I have to go trim some hedges.

I just cut some flowers. I have hedges to trim, too, but keep putting them off making the job bigger. An endless circle of despair.

At this point you are worried about staving off autovictory? That actually is kind of insightful.

I am also curious if loading all those ships generates a heavy volume message?

Another insightful tidbit is your concern over 1 snooper sub.

Many thanks.

If I don't plan ahead on that in this game I could get into big trouble before I realize it.

I figure it might but nothing I can do about it.

Trying to keep Intel leaks to a minimum. This op is PERILOUS (with a capital D for disaster) so I need all the help I can get. Crap, I only have one DMS assigned to escort each of my two oiler TF's with the big, fast oilers.

Is this a real carrier sighting? I have doubts. I wonder if it could be a damaged AV from a submarine attack some time back which has finished making temporary repairs.

I'd say absolutely it's an AV. Can't image a Japanese player sending a CV into sub infested waters with a single escort I reckon your evaluation is correct; looks like its heading to Truk. Might mean potentially fewer eyes to spot your invasion...

Detection! I know sometimes these are radio intercepts but I usually report them as submarine activity if in a spot where that's possible. Tracker does not report a DL increase, so I am guessing this is a radio traffic volume intercept. Tomorrow and the day after a supply convoy will pass through this area and quite possibly be noticed by Imperial subs in waters south of Johnston Island. Maybe that will cover us.

Yeah, it just wouldn't make sense to be a carrier unless it was a cripple and he hasn't got any I know of.

DL is one area I was looking forward to Alfred"s clarifying and expounding on in his project. Somehow
I think it was derailed. I don't think with a 1/0 DL the TFs are on Japans map nor is the co-ordinate
where you ended the phase. It could have been a sub sighting on xAK just off the HI. Hard to say sans
Alfred or a devs comment. Tomorrow should be telltale if he suspects anything. I would guess he has
at least one boat off Midway somewhere he could move to contact.

Not sure about a boat near Midway because I haven't had any contacts at all up there. I figure there would be a sighting or two by now.

I think I neglected to mention it, but when the rest of the surface combat ships sail they will take a slightly different route. The current Op CO batch went NW then west to their point. The rest will go west then NW, hoping to avoid any sub posted NW, if that's what the DL was.

The contact is also near the Hawaii - Midway supply route, so maybe a sub. It also might be a sub taking a different route to monitor PH after the recent mobbing of the sub to the SW.

I will elaborate on Japanese Sig Int, in lieu of Alfred.

In my experience, Japan received an "At Sea" radio intercept. It most likely a "Heavy Volume." The sub likely increased the chances of getting the intel.

This is perhaps Japan's greatest intel weapon that goes largely ignored by most JFBs. Often times the loading and unloading of troops at ports will generate such reports.

Kitchen Sink invasions will generally trigger a report each day, especially if there is some type of listening unit near by.

It is my pure speculation that subs or other Japanese devices aid in generating sigint. I have nothing other than personal experience to back up that claim.

A careful analysis of Japanese SigInt can lead to some stunning surprises, as oftentimes the Allies simply discount it. What can a 1/0dl really tell? But they lack the insight of having played Japan, and don't realize the trend, the location, yields actionable intelligence.

Long ago I became convinced Allied naval search provided a similar aid when arcs were at least in the neighborhood of (not necessarily covering) IJN assets. It makes perfect sense submarines provide the same/similar benefit.

Been RL busy... must push Intel Monkey development. A couple of nice tools would help JFB's with that.

• Two hexes NE of Kusaie Island we have sighted a CS moving east towards the Marshall Islands.

• 9x CA, 3x CL, and 21x DD are forming into TF's at Pearl Harbor and will sail tonight to meet the rest of the fleet. One DD will follow after a quick day in the shipyard.

• Three USN Air HQ's are loaded aboard 5x APD each; they will remain at Pearl Harbor to sail a more direct course as the invasion convoys near the targets.

• Two PBY Sqns for air search are ready to go (one has been operating from PH to boost ASW efforts recently), as are two Kingfisher Sqns. The latter would need a lift as they lack the range to transfer.

• Still no SigInt bearing directly on targets.

• They slowed our movement; we slowed their movement, damaged them, and identified them. An infantry regiment! Good news on the open planes with B-17's supporting and more of our armor on the way. I have reset the movement of the 3rd Tank Battalion to the hex immediately to the east, and will continue on in that fashion. The idea is to keep the regiment pursuing along the current course so promote engagement by both the B-17's and the USA TD Bns en route. The next hex might have been made tomorrow so all that movement was lost, but this is the best way.

• Three ships including 2x PC have been spotted, under heavy cloud, moving SW in the Coral Sea having just entered that body of water from the Solomon Sea. They do not appear to be angling for Port Moresby or Horn Island. What gives?

• All New Zealand infantry squads are up to '41 standards.

Philippines

DEI, Dutch new Guinea, Borneo, Malaya
• The fight against the impossible continues, but is now solely in the hands of the officials and populace of Chrimas Island (IO) and Cocos Islands.

China
• Only Burma Corps HQ left to airlift out of China; that will take 2 or 3 days.

• The remaining Chinese Air Force bomber squadrons have been bought out and moved to India.

• The Empire's plan for China is becoming clear. They seek to prevent us from falling back to the mountains with sufficient force to hold them. The mountains themselves are being pressured to force infiltrations which will crack the defenses before reinforcements arrive. The road out of Changsha is on the way to being fully invested - every hex - to prevent those crack troops from redeploying or retreating in a useful (to us) direction after combat. The forests east of the Chungking plain are being infiltrated more heavily. While all this is going on the surviving ex-Sian defenders are watched by three divisions as they are training targets for Imperial death gliders. Whether intended or not can't be known, but their slow destruction delays their re-arrival as undeads. Their numbers upon re-arrival will be substantial enough to slow down the conquest of the Chungking plain to some degree. Delaying their arrival to give Imperial forces time to fully set up their offensive is hastening the fall of China.

• What to do at Changsha?! Our troops there are highly experienced, yet if they withdraw the Changsha supply source will be lost then instead of when they are defeated. I am considering pulling out the Changsha defenders; possibly replacing them (if I can pull it off) with other units to hold longer (and be lost of course). Opinions? Suggestions?

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina
• No enemy sub activity detected.

• Disappointed our mine field at Rangoon has had no customers.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia
