1943 July 11

The Corsairs continue to slice through enemy fighters over Bhamo, and the P-47's perform cleanup.

If you don't like the KB there, remove it. Try massing subs on its retreat path. If you have 4Es in the area, have them set for naval attack at high altitude to wear down the fighters. If you have American Catalinas there, send them in at night with torpedoes.

Even though I don't like it there, it's not so bad.

I will be able to get convoys through when they leave to replenish.

The 4EB are doing more important work. Distracting them from that would be worse.

No USN PBY in theater now. I don't think any of my other torpedo armed aircraft can reach them.

They would probably lose many aircraft trying to raid into the Akyab - Chittagong corridor. If they were to raid Colombo there is only a little shipping there - maybe enough to entice them - but lots and lots of AA.

I don't think I have enough subs close enough to really make a difference. After rearranging search coverage, I got a very long range group to cover down close to Victoria Point, and I just recently got a bunch of subs on station at once. They should have better luck against convoys with the naval search overhead, and so I really don't want to move them right now.

Maybe it's time for a BB bombardment of Truk?

The Central Pacific should be good right now if that is all of his carriers, or even just a significant portion of them. Let him play whack-a-mole.

Yeah.

Enterprise is the only fleet carrier deployed forward with 9x CVE. Hornet and 2x CVE is backtracking toward Pearl so Hornet's air wing can fly aboard, so that's losing a few days. In two more days another Essex CV will arrive at Balboa, then 2x CV and 1x CVL will head for Pearl from Balboa. 1x CVL is already en route to Pearl from the West Coast. Wasp will finish upgrading in 2 weeks at Pearl. Yorktown and Saratoga each need more than a month to repair, and I assume Essex will be around that when she puts into San Francisco dry dock tomorrow. So soon and for the near future we will have 2x CV and 11x CVE forward deployed, with a nice infusion of 3x CV and 2x CVL a short number of weeks later.

We will also have plenty of battleships on line even with 1x fast BB and 4x old BB repairing and upgrading.

We can certainly get the Ponape invasion in before the IJN carriers return, but not Truk. That might not matter because we will have 3x CV back on line, which should give us enough superiority to cover that invasion.

Bypass Truk. Let the units wither so they can't be bought out if you were to destroy them.

Hmm.

I will consider that, but I do not have units preparing for the Marianas yet and I really like Truk as a base. I'll mull it over in the coming turns.

Correction: our long range naval search reaches to an arc from Langwaki to Sabang.

The IJN KB's are 6 hexes west of Cox's Bazar. There are 2x enemy CL at Akyab.

• The KB's moved only a bit.

• We have arranged an LRCAP trap over the hex between Bhamo and Myitkyina for tomorrow. Recall that prior to today our sweeps over Bhamo netted many Imperial fighters. Today the only fighters in the area were Nicks making their own bombing runs, and there were many 2EB. The Corsairs and P-47's will LRCAP from Dimapur, and a squadron of P-39N1 has moved to Myitkyina to LRCAP from 1 hex away. After the battle they will move back to India to keep from burdening the Burma supply system.

It ruined their whole night when they were greeted by the US Navy as well, although it was separate nights for each one. The air units helped the next day by ruining their entire day as well.

The CAP trap went well enough although the main victim turned out to be a Nick bombing raid which came in first and seemingly absorbed most of the punishment, sparing later raids the trap's full fury.

Invested: Taung Gyi.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall

• What do we do about the Imperial carriers in the Bay of Bengal? Grin and bear it for now. Move as fast as we can in the Pacific.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• Loading more support forces for Kusaie Island to operate the airbase.

Pacific

• Two of the subs our ASW engaged today reported sunk. Standard optimism?

A batch of DD's arrived at Kwajalein and several ASW TF will deploy to the sub infested area around Kusaie Island. A USMC para unit will drop on (empty) Taongi tomorrow.

• Curious the attention given to Cox's Bazar here. Prelude to invasion? Attending to the greater supply chain for Burma? Error in assigning the bombardment target? These are different battleships than struck Akyab, so maybe different divisions will keep up bombardments on each of hte two bases. What do you think?

The airbase and aircraft at Cox's Bazar were unaffected, although most ground units at the base have great disruption. Fortifications level 4 might have made the difference.

At that point the squadrons will variously have to fill out with planes and experienced pilots before deploying, but in a little more than a week they should be in position to start adding their weight to the air battles over Burma or perhaps harry the IJN carriers.

Although we won the air battle, the greater victory there was adequately protecting the bombers.

• Akyab is almost repaired but no repairs were made on Cox's Bazar by the dazed and confused engineers wandering around there. I'm not sure when the Empire will next assault our defenders near Akyab, but I hope to keep their recovery slow enough to get some better tanks in place. The convoy with air groups headed for Bombay will arrive there in three days. They now have destroyers in escort but there are no Imperial subs known operating in the Arabian Sea at this time. Even the IJN carriers would have to spring for two and a half days to get in striking range, but the convoy is not known to be detected.

Once again our airdales won the day and protected the bombers. The enemy sweeps were all conducted by Ki-44-IIb Tojo, and we had no CAP there to be bothered by them. The enemy's CAP consisted of N1K1-J George and Ki-44-IIb Tojo in good numbers, plus a few Ki-43-Ic Oscar. Our Corsairs and P-47's did not sweep (weather?) but our P-38G and P-38H did. The P-38G won handily while the P-38H completely over-matched the Imperials.

INVADED
Invested: Taung Gyi.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall

• CVL Belleau Wood has arrived at the Canal.

• The Empire is recalcitrantly feisty in the Bay of Bengal. What to do? Solidify our next advances in the Pacific as rapidly as practicable. Currently available carriers should be enough to cover bombardments of Truk (and of course Ponape). Get in invasions of Wake Island and Marcus Island as soon as forces are ready, and ultimately Pagan in the Marianas Islands.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• 5 days until Wasp is ready. Another 8 subs are sailing for Midway to deploy in Japan's home waters. None of those 8 upgrade next month so they will help to keep up the pressure while various Gato class subs rotate in for those important radar upgrades. We are dispatching all the operational old BB's to Kwajalein so they can begin frequent bombardment of Ponape and Truk, plus nearer invasion targets like Maloelap.

Pacific

• They are chasing our carriers and our ASW groups are chasing them.

• The 4EB have been moved to Dimapur, and the sweeper P-38's to Jorhat. Silchar will be the base for the 4EB groups steaming toward Bombay right now (2 days out). Chittagong base was not badly damaged, but minor fires are burning. Fortifications 6 certainly helped.

Great move by the Empire: drive our aircraft back along the coast by hitting the two forward bases first, then (somehow) run in deep without being seen and blast the big base.

Akyab has repaired and begun airbase building again, 5 + 95%; after reaching 6 we will switch to build more fortifications, currently at 3. Cox's Bazar has finally begun repairing and is set to build foritifactions, currently 4 + 0%.

Destroyer Scout will run from Chittagong to Calcutta to get into dry dock for repairs but the other ships will stay at Chittagong.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia

• No activity but lots of subs on station.

Ouch! But we still won in the air, even with CAP against our escort.

This is after the 4EB groups transfered and replaced losses from these pools. I'm itching to get more B-24 groups into action.

Caught up!

What an interesting CV clash you had! You managed to lengthen the clash and really make out very well!!!

Kudos for putting the slower battleships to use...and not losing all of them.

China kind of sucks, but is to be expected and now and I guess they did their job by preventing IJA from going elsewhere in strength -- it looks like a slog in Burma now.

New Guinea to Kuriles seems open with the remnants of the KB in the Bay of Bengal.

Have more fun!

Thanks! The first phase was with Wildcats, just shortly before Hellcats arrived so I could have waited, but I wanted to get things moving. Having deliberately adopted a less energetic opening for the purpose of dodging Walter's expectations, I felt like I was getting behind. I did nearly get some invasions in much earlier...

I think that was key, even though (IIRC) only one of the TF's got involved initially. I just wouldn't have had the surface power to cover the area otherwise.

China kind of sucks, but is to be expected and now it looks like a slog in Burma.
I had achieved a great supply flow into Burma, and now he's cut it. It remains to be seen how much I can get in when/if the carriers have to leave station for logistical reasons.

New Guinea to Kuriles seems open with the remnants of the KB in the Bay of Bengal.
I have nothing prepared for the Kuriles. I'm going to bypass the Solomons and some other areas and Go right for Manus and Kavieng, push as much as I can past that, then clean up as time goes on.

LCU's are still preparing, but I plan to take Pagan and work the rest of the Marianas Islands from there. Units also preparing for Wake Island and Marcus Island to support that vector.

Have more fun!

1943 July 20

INVADED
Invested: Taung Gyi.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall

• Looking at preparation percentages, it will be almost two months before our forces are ready to invade Wake Island and Marcus Island, and more than three months before they are ready for Pagan in the Marianas Islands. Some forces for Truk will be ready within a month, but another division will take three months. The forces for Ponape are ready now, and so are the forces assigned to Kavieng and Manus.

Aside from minor invasions and cleanup invasions, the plan now is:
Ponape
Manus
Kavieng
begin bombardments of Truk and possibly invade
Wake Island
Marcus Island
Pagan

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• New ships, repairs, troop movements...

Pacific

• Fewer encounters.

• It looks like there is a CL TF with the IJN carriers 18 hexes from Akyab. I figure they will get closer tomorrow, then run in to bombard either Akyab or Co's Bazar the following night.

Tomorrow the convoy with those 8 air groups will pull into Bombay. No sign of enemy submarines.
