Does anybody know for certain if LCU's continue accumulating preparation while loaded onboard amphibious ships? I have one unit for Iwo-Jima at 75% preparation and another at 80% preparation.

Prep ceases on board ships whether Transport or Amphib loaded.

OK, thanks guys.

That means one of our USA Inf regiments will be at or slightly above 80%, and the amphibious tractor Bn will be around 85%.

I think I should still proceed ASAP rather than wait on them to make 100% preparation.

What do you think?

Congrats on taking Rabaul! Not many Allied players get to do so without massive casualties.

Feb 1944 is a year early for Iwo Jima - good progress. But make sure you bring your giant roto-rooters for those caves!

And congrats on getting Quality to finally figure out how to get ASW hits.

• I stood down our artillery bombardment on the theory that return fire was keeping up disruption in our infantry, but it did not decline any from yesterday. It's not high per se, just low teens, but I figure I should be able to get it back into the single digits for the next assault as before. The bombardment TF's should be in adequate position to bombard for an assault the day after tomorrow.

• Hornet is on station 1 hex east of Pagan with Indiana, a CVE, a CL, and numerous DD's.

• The combined weight of the naval bombardments was very great, and after the air strikes and artillery there was one defending unit with 22 AV, the rest 0. The 12th Tank Regiment, what was left of it from prior combat, evaporated. Still the defense adjusted to 115 AV behind fortifications in the rough terrain. The assault units have high disruption and will rest while the artillery keeps the holdouts from resting. The mine sweepers on site will begin working while more come in from Marcus. A group of AKE is on the way to support rearming battleships at Pagan for the Iwo-Jima operation. Naval search by PBY will commence tomorrow from Pagan.

That was a pretty strong defense for Pagan...I was never so strong in Jan 1944.

Seems like he has given up on the Marianas defense...

Well done, the relentless Allied assault moves on.

Looking at the weak to non-existent defenses in what are normally the outer rings for Japan's defense, it's pretty clear to me that Walter's strategy is to make the inner rings ultra hard to take. Saipan, Tinian, and Guam will be really tough, I think. I got lucky in choosing Pagan by getting there before he got defenses up to par with those three higher priority locations. Looking at the long-time recon results for Iwo-Jima I might get lucky there too, but my ready forces for Iwo-Jima are not so close to ideal.

At least from now on the US forces will have '44 squads. The Allies are all well along in their upgrades to '43 squads. Allied infantry is now very well equipped.

Overall

• No carrier info.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• I've managed to over stack much of the Hawaiian Islands.

Pacific

• Our assault units are recovering well and are already upgrading to '44 squads. Today's artillery bombardment probably caught the deposed enemy with no fortifications. All known mine fields cleared at Pagan.

• Lots of George fighters swept Pagan today in two waves. We did pretty well, but that can't keep up, and I really don't want our carrier fighters and pilots depleted before the Iwo-Jima operation. Going fighter heavy for the Pagan operation was a good decision. The support units for Pagan will arrive tomorrow and maybe start unloading then too. Aircraft are on the way via an AKV convoy including 2x P-47 groups, arriving in a little over a week. Tonight two CA TF's will bombard Saipan, where 94 enemy fighters have gathered. There are 47 at Guam. Tinian Recon is off line repairing, but there should be an aircraft back over target tomorrow.

• Pagan runways repaired 33% in one day, 43% to go. Tomorrow I should be able to transfer in the P-47D2 and F4U-1A squadrons from Marcus to bolster sweep defense in advance of the P-47's arriving later by ship. The 100% airbase damage should take only 3 days to repair.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• Babo and Boela seem undefended after 2 days of Recon. Both have oil for Australia! Lautem has only 940 defenders with 4 guns.

Philippines

China

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia

• At least our subs shoot at them sometimes instead of always the reverse.

Enemy sweeps over Pagan went in our favor today, but there are 50% more fighters at Pagan now than just before those sweeps.

• 10,540 troops and 33 guns remaining. Our troops are resting and upgrading equipment. The Corsairs and Thunderbolts just in from Marcus are flying anti-sweep CAP at 31,000 ft. IF IJA fighters show up tomorrow they will get a nasty surprise. Runways have 6% damage. The OBB's are leaving Marcus tonight and re-basing to Pagan. The CA's which just bombarded are heading to Marcus to rearm. The first batch of AKE's will arrive at Pagan in 3 days, another smaller batch the day after. For the time being there will be 12x AKE stationed at Pagan; rearming battleships really empties out the supply lockers!

• We have a bunch of LCT at Babar unloading supply and no enemy naval search has sighted them. I am wondering if everything is being ceded as far as Kendari. Two of our APD are 2 hexes from Sansapor to unload commandos there and are spotted with DL 6/6; they are going to full speed to get in and out as quickly as possible. SeaBees are partially unloaded at Dobo and already helping the few organic to the USMC para unit already there.

• Amazingly, the base on Pagan is fully repaired and 2% progress made toward increasing the airfield to size 3. The first batch of AKE will arrive tomorrow. Fuel is on the way, but most fueling will be done from oilers in the near future anyway. Another P-47 Sqn has been brought in from Marcus, with some Hellcats standing in for them there. The aircraft on the to Pagan by ship will be unloaded at Marcus and flown in as space allows.

• The fleet carriers and escorts will head north toward Iwo-Jima to cover a 6x DD TF being sent to patrol Iwo-Jima after search sighted what might be LB in convoy making for the Bonins.

When can AE ships begin reloading TF's AA ammo at sea? Is that January 1, 1944 or January 1, 1945?

Here is Bullwinkles essay on reloading at sea....I am sure there is more information in this thread than you ever wanted to know about it.

Thanks!

I searched the manual and could find only a reference to "late in the war".

I know the manual has 15 hexes for Kamikaze activation but that was with 60 NM hexes; with these 40 NM hexes IIRC it's 22 hexes. In other words, Iwo-Jima will activate kamikazes!

I never understood AFB's obsession with not activating Kamikazes. I think they are mostly free VP for the Allies.

Gotta have the AA up to spec to deal with them. Have a few ships that need to upgrade.

• Loading engineers for Pagan; loading the initial round of support troops for Iwo-Jima (post-capture).

Pacific

• Pagan is secured. The Empire got some revenge when a DB squadron set to attack ground units at Pagan went for Saipan and, uh, CAP happened.

• Our CVE are taking replacement aircraft from the AKE at Pagan. Our fleet carriers will do likewise at Marcus; if they all replenished from Pagan the AKE there would have trouble keeping up their stores to be able to rearm the battleships once the Iwo-Jima bombardments begin. Pagan's airfield is being expanded about 11% per day. Currently size 2, I will bring it to size 3 before switching construction to the port until the port is size 2. I'll get more engineers on the way from Pearl and swap them (stacking limit-wise) for the other division on Pagan.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

• Lots of activity with upgrades and especially moving small forces around to make grabs in the DEI. Many Australian and New Zealander units preparing for DEI targets, more will be assigned in the coming days. Loading base units for Dobo in DEI.

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• They anticipated this dot-base cleanup landing but the APD's defended themselves quite well.
