Don't disabled squads still fight at about 1/10 of usual strength?

Sure, but to get the high adjusted AV they had I am supposing was due to the fortification level plus the rough terrain.

Yeah, my remark was just to remind readers and newbies that 0 AV doesn't always mean absolute 0 AV.

Overall

• No carrier info.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• South Dakota, Canberra II, Reno, and 9x DD are leaving Pearl Harbor for Iwo-Jima. CVE Barnes made it back to Pearl Harbor and will enter the shipyard.

Pacific

• As amphibious TF's are clearing the primary danger area up around Iwo-Jima we are stripping destroyers out of them to be rearmed at Pagan for deployment back at Iwo-Jima. The OBB are all rearmed and refueled at Pagan but will wait for the troops at Iwo-Jima to call for them.

• There are fighters building up again in the southern Marianas. Pagan airfield is size 3 + 52%, perhaps 4 days from expansion; the engineer force in place is 279E + 70EV and the base is below stacking limit so no penalties.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• No further signs of trouble. We will get engineers in harbor at Dobo tomorrow with a supply convoy to follow shortly.

Philippines

China

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia

• There appear to be several small SCTF's in the area, so that will be the game.

Task forces break off...

• Disruption among the assault units at Iwo-Jima is high, with only one unit not up in the 30's or 40's. AV is up to 470, better but not an astounding gain. I believe in the coming days Disruption will drop significantly and AV recovery will accelerate. We have just shy of 150,000 supply among the units on Iwo-Jima and we are only 20% over stacked. Just in case this becomes a very protracted battle, we are preparing more than a division's worth of Australian infantry units and three additional armored units; that will take time, of course. We are still shooting down flying boats over Iwo-Jima along with other types, but they appear to be on search missions.

• Iowa, New Jersey, San Francisco, and 5x DD will join the battle fleet just west of Iwo-Jima tomorrow. 9x CVE escorted by 2x DD and 4x DE will arrive at Iwo-Jima tomorrow.

Complete combat report attached.

• None of our destroyers which engaged in combat this turn is in jeopardy. Those TF's are returning to Pagan to rearm and drop out ships that need repairs. The ground troops condition is improving and AV is up to 498, but disruption has further to drop.

• 380 defensive mines have been laid at Pagan; the airbase is at 77% expansion, so two more days for expansion to size 4. Two CVE, one with 90% flooding, are 13 hexes from the nearest mysterious convoy sighted NNE of Iwo-Jima. Although the CVE cripples have been unspotted all along, we are dispatching a small SCTF to their location. They are still 6 hexes from Pagan and creeping along. Wasp (in port) is still very slowly pumping out and has flooding of 39(30)%, and so will wait until either pumped out or the CVE's arrive before she sets sail. A few oilers are leaving to head for Iwo-Jima.

• Dobo airbase is now size 3; Biak will have an operable airfield tomorrow.

• Disruption among the assault forces on Iwo-Jima is dropping better now btu still must fall further. AV is 513.

• Two small convoys have been sighted far NNE of Iwo-Jima, a place where no convoys could have routes.

• The OBB are departing Pagan for Iwo-Jima. Several damaged destroyers are in harbor. minor repairs will be done there while modest repairs push on to Wake to see if they can stay close to the front. Serious repairs will escort Wasp to Pearl Harbor. Pagan airfield is 90% toward size 4.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia

• Assault units up to 532 AV at Iwo-Jima; two units still have disruption in the 20's. The OBB's are on their way to Iwo-Jima for a complementary bombardment.

• No enemy surface forces seen. Enemy troops on Iwo-Jima now show as 9,280 by Recon. Crikey! We are dropping one squadron of Hellcats down to 3,000 ft to see if that helps stop wave-skimmers.

• The tactic we used here worked: they bombarded a decoy base. Manokwari is building an airfield but only as fast as the infantry can manage, and they will withdraw before they finish. Noemfoor, 1 hex back, is the search base (no built facilities) with AVD's camouflaged by potted trees on deck and thatch roof huts built over gun turrets. Biak, 2 hexes back, is where the airbase has been/is being built and will be staffed.

• Assault units at Pagan have 551 AV, but the division and an infantry Rgt still have Disruption of 22. I am putting them into reserve for a few turns to see if that helps. The battle fleet just west of Iwo-Jima has begun slowly refueling. Their attack groups are now set to 3 hex range.

• 9 hexes north of Iwo-Jima a TF of 3 ships is spotted moving southwest: PG, PG, SC. 10 hexes north of Iwo-Jima a TF of 4 ships is spotted moving west: BB. Could be anything.

Unfortunately, Alfred says that escorting ships only help with putting out fires. Seems they can pump water in but not out!
Of course, it is still good to have them to fend off subs and air attacks, and rescue the CVE's captain if she sinks.

• We now have 562 AV at Iwo-Jima, and Disruption continues dropping although less quickly than I desire. The OBB's will bombard tonight, which is just in time because port damage is down to 1 and we don't want them thinking they can build even more fortifications. Refueling of the battle fleet continues.

• Only enemy submarines in sight. 5 more Emily shot down today. I sure hope production of those things is low; 142 have been shot down in total so far with several dozen of those being around Iwo-Jima.

I know I haven't posted a pic, but anything outside my search but close enough to them would also be very near Japan. I've thought about them being bait and if they are they are bait for a good trap. I won't touch. My subs, of course, are on the job! It's also possible they are just ASW TF's and the odd xAK, etc designation is a search variance. Oh well.

The xAK may be a PB to give the SCs a bigger gun to back them up against a surfaced sub.

I've seen a lot of PB types in his ASW TF's. I could swear many have depth charges, so I assumed they were converted types to beef them up.

1944 February 16

INVADED

INVESTED
Taung Gyi
Iwo-Jima

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall

• A force of up to 400 enemy CVL (spotting error?) with 77F and 30B is one hex east of Sansapor.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

Pacific

• It look like Pagan airfield will max out at size 5 in a week. We now have an AR at Pagan. Wasp has repaired temporary flooding and will head for Pearl Harbor in company with some damaged destroyers; likewise Copahee is heading out to Wake to see if hte the 55,000 ton ARD there can deal with her hull damage.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• The enemy CVL with 77F and 30B is one hex east of Sansapor; a TF of 5 ships including 1x PG and 1x CS is at Kaimana. Clearly the latter force was trying to catch our APD's.We have the USN cruisers at Dobo and they will attempt to intercept and escape retribution from the carriers across the tip of New Guinea.

Philippines

China

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia

• AV at Iwo-Jima is 604, finally a big jump, and the highest Disruption level is 12. The battleships are ready for another go whenever the troops are enough recovered.

• That small enemy carrier force 1 hex NW of Gebe and is probably going to move through the Ceram Sea into the Banda Sea. We have good enough fighter cover at Dobo and at Darwin to roughly handle any strikes they can generate (unless they brought lots of friends).

• 609 AV at Iwo-Jima, an increase of just 5, but the good news is that Disruption is below 10 in all units and Fatigue below 20. I'll give it a minimum of three more days; if AV is rising fast then I'll wait; if AV is merely creeping upward then I'll assault. The old battleships stay put tomorrow; after that they will make for their jump off point near Iwo-Jima (a two day journey) to stand by.

• Today's action is what was expected and what I expect in the near future. I still have no real idea how strong is the main IJN carrier force at this time.

Overall

• Small enemy carrier force 1 hex NE of Gebe.

• No info on large enemy carriers, but they might be covering Yamato near Aogashima.

• The 5th USMC Division has arrived and will prepare for Babeldaob. There is one USA infantry division currently allocated for Babeldaob, but I suspect it will be well defended. We are not preparing for Peleliu at this time.

• The small enemy carrier force is 1 hex NE of Gebe in company of what must be a surface force.

• Over the next 5 days 3x CVE will arrive at Portland; those plus 4x CVE now at Pearl Harbor will deploy in the DEI to augment our LBA-covered advances there.

Philippines

China

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina

• SigInt whiffed the call sign of Yamato 13 hexes from Iwo-Jima, too far for a raid tomorrow unless it's in day;light which I doubt they would want.

The Japanese switched the codes for their aircraft carriers with destroyers which is one reason why the US Intelligence thought that the Japanese aircraft carriers were in Japanese home waters in early December 1941 . . .

• San Pablo has some damage but flooding is small. Search our of Noemfoor (where else) showqs the enemy carriers west of Peleliu and heading NE, the retiring surface force south of them, and an APD convoy 1 hex NE of Morotai heading SE in the direction of Noemfoor. We are sending our cruisers to Noemfoor to intercept them and a squadron of Corsairs into Biak to cover the cruisers, plus a squadron of Spitfire VIII to Biak for good measure.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia

• 653 AV at Iwo-Jima today, another nice jump, so I will wait and see if we get to my hoped-for 700 within a few days before assaulting again. Now, as a side effect of the troops needing time to recover, all units are 100% prepared for the target. Fatigue and Disruption both are in the single digits for all units.

• We now have 8 fast battleships with the fleet carriers near Iwo-Jima, so I split some into a second task force, four BB's each.

Complete combat report attached.
