Doesn't all the waiting at IJ allow the Japanese to recover and maybe fly in more troops too?

Good point.

The troop number by recon have been pretty stable for a good while. They also can't fly in heavy equipment, which means quite a lot in combat, IMO. There are also hundreds of fighters on CAP, not LRCAP, over the island. While a good number of Emily were shot down on search (as told by message in the reports), I believe our CAP shot down a large number bringing in troops. That is not happening now.

Fortifications are so high, 6 as I recall, that I think we need to have a really stout assault force to avoid it being slaughtered.

Another part of that equation is the naval bombardments. Again we will use all the old BB, 8 in total, and half of the fast BB, 4 of them.

One of my goals is a much shorter cycle between assaults. The current recovery is from the landing + shock attack.

For the next few assaults, I am not concerned about enemy casualties as much as I am about keeping our force intact for succeeding assaults, and reducing fortifications.

'Couple more days.

I think it's more the ground combat routines than leaders - I recall Andy Mac stating that the ground combat model tends to favour larger units, and that fits with my experience and from what has been said about the routines by the devs.

It used to be so, but the routines were changed.

The leader of the Rgt that got hit worst is pretty poor.

The 11th got hid hard initially because they were about 82% prepared for the target plus low experience. The USMC Rgt just due to aggressiveness I guess.

The result of sweeps from Pagan over Saipan. Our sweeps went in multiple waves instead of coherently.

I don't recall, but I do remember (hopefully correctly! ) that MichaelM made it.

It makes a nice difference. There is still the usual AE variability, so any unit can get hit much harder than other units in any given combat, so a small unit can still take it on the chin but that's occasional as opposed to hard and fast.

Those better bombardment results probably correspond with the dropping of forts to level 5 during your last LCU battle.
I hope your Combat Engineers fared well in the last assault - there never seem to be enough of them.

I just looked back: only 2 squads destroyed and 17 disabled. I think they survived pretty well.

Combat squads are always the last to be affected by bombing or bombardment - they have foxholes. You destroyed more support squads which will affect the combat squads ability to recover later. You are making progress.

Sorry I wasn't clear: I meant my own combat engineer squads' casualties during the most recent ground assault.

1944 February 29

INVADED

INVESTED
Taung Gyi
Iwo-Jima

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall

• Enemy carrier force 7 hexes NE of Biak, stronger than before. I've been wondering if and when significant IJN forces would show up down there, and now hte question is, have they? Or is this a hope to draw some Allied naval forces away from Iwo-jima?

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• BB Tennessee finished repairs on the West Coast.

Pacific

• The battleships, new and old, have resupplied at Pagan and will depart for Iwo-jima.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

• DD Shaw will depart Manus for Sydney to make full repairs.
quote:

• Additional fighters have been moved to Manus in case the enemy carriers venture that far.

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• The enemy carrier force 7 hexes NE of Biak is much stronger this time: 167F, 119B, 10A. In true naval search reporting tradition there could be several dozen carriers present. Spotting is not strong with no actual DL given, so the force could be stronger the aircraft numbers reported.

• The RN cruisers, unspotted, will head back to Manus. The USN cruisers, at Biak and spotted hard, will run like hell for Hollandia, where more fighters are massing. The two AVD disbanded at Biak are not being copied on traffic.

Philippines

• Somethin' juicy.

• We have more than 180 fighters on CAP over Pagan.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

• Manus has enough fighters overhead they should be able to break the backs of the enemy air wings, should the IJN carriers venture that far.

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• In the alternate reality we did better. Alas.

• We are bracing for an enemy landing at Biak. The squadrons have been pulled out except for 2x Spitfire VIII which are being repaired. The two AVD in port are trapped and will stay where they are in case there is no invasion or it fails (it would have to be small for that to happen).

• All 4EB within near reach have been placed on naval attack.

• The enemy disposition looks to be covering for an invasion of Biak.

The enemy fleet. Highlighted is the main carrier concentration. Battleships are at Biak. A smaller concentration of carriers is near Sansapor, and there might be invasion forces with them.

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall

• Enemy carriers have disappeared but must be near Babeldaob.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• An air combat group with 7x CVE has formed is heading for Manus. Their pilots continue learning how to land on land. Aside from organic escorts there is a TF of 7x Fletcher class DD going along to also reinforce the area. That'll show those nasty fleet carriers and battleships.

Pacific

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

• CL Phoenix and DD Shaw will head for Pearl Harbor for repairs.

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• Both airfields were hit very hard (the price of building the base before the fortifications) but aircraft losses were merciful.

• Enemy naval forces appear to have withdrawn fast, all now out of search range except the dead shot heavy cruisers that mauled Hollandia.

• So is it? Or will the Empire return with raermed surface ships now that our forward airbases have been knocked out?

According to that alternate Combat Report, you took a nice bite out of his CV bomber complement - good show! He likely went back to replenish aircraft and pilots as much as ammo. I think he will return soon. In the meantime you can raise heck elsewhere ...
