If you disband the damaged aircraft into one fragment, then you can issue replacements to the losing units. Also, if that fragment then goes overstrength, after the repairs are finished, the excess aircraft will go into reserve where they can be pulled out and issued as replacements to the units that need them.

I didn't know damaged aircraft went into one of the sub-units, thanks!

Those initial B-29 squadrons are only 7 airplanes each. One Sqn had two a/c down, and I think two others had one down each. A few more went into maintenance after the flight to Akyab. With Service Rating 5, maybe a little repair time!

Yes, you can pick and chose, up to a limit. But don't fly the air units to a base on a railline otherwise they will rail to the destination. But you can rail the fragments to another base to speed up the repairs.

I learned a lot from you, just returning the favor.

Nice to see that strike at Pelelieu. Was getting bored with all the bombardments and sub/ASW action. I don't think the Japanese at Almagan will be in any shape to resist an attack now.

It's mostly about transport now that I know (as with Agrihan) they can land at Almagan without full preparation in the circumstances (no shock attack, heavily suppressed defenders, etc.).

I've got a bunch of the units assigned to Saipan heading to their staging areas. I don't have a date yet but I'll be getting that invasion underway as soon as possible. Almost certainly will land the force in stages. I know that will entail more shore battery fire but I have a bunch of APA upgrading, probably would not have enough lift to land all units at once anyway, and I don't want to wait.

I'll do the same right after with Tinian so those battles will be concurrent as I mentioned earlier. Truk might be the same but owing to the distance will require full commitment of bombardment battleship groups, so I'll wait and see about the timing for Truk.

1944 April 08

I haven't replaced this captain, but I'm wondering if I should. He has a couple of characteristics that are low, Inspiration and Naval Skill, but Leadership is quite good and Aggressiveness is great. What do you think?

Low Naval skill? He does not know how to position his ship and likes to play bumper ships?

Naval skill is of prime importance. Sub commanders should be in the 70-90+ range for naval skill, Cruiser captains in the 60+ range. DDs see most of the action so I tend to give them 60+ leaders whenever possible, while high 50s is good enough for BBs.

CVs are more complicated because I also want good Air skill (for strike coordination), so I might compromise a bit on Naval Skill to get decent Air skill as well. So lets say CVs are 55-65 range in Naval Skill, CVLs about five points lower, and CVEs another five lower than that.

Inspiration seems to only count for combat in Air Units and LCUs, and maybe damage control on ships.

Aggression is a two edged sword. Too little is a leader who quits battle too soon, too much is a reckless leader. For a ship like a BB I choose a middle aggression leader - around 60. For DDs, I try to get them around 70 to press their torpedo attacks. Cruisers - 55 to 65. Carriers - around 50.
ASW vessels also need leaders with high aggression to get persistence in hunting and attacking, but it is usually hard to find enough 60+ aggression leaders for small vessels.

I'm not sure I have so many commanders with high naval rankings to choose from! I'll have to look.

Keep him and experiment with his leadership traits...in a fight does his ship lead the way or sit back?

I think we don't really know how all the leadership factors interplay...I would guess his ship might be more likely to catch a torpedo or a hit but in return he might get the experience up very fast. Alfred has a great saying how leadership ratings are put into a matrix or table of some kind.

Dodging torpedoes I always ascribe to Naval skill. I have been using my highest Leadership captains as the TF leaders when I have multiple ships of the same type that could be TF leaders. I expected it to help with collision avoidance and maneuvering for best position for combat, but have had few combats to look at. The collision avoidance seems to work - I have had almost none- but that could be because my captains all have decent Naval skill. My multi-BB and multi-CA TFs have been doing a lot of bombardments, which seem to go off well with the high leadership guys in charge. Die roll seem to play a big part for results.

• We are trying to get assault forces + shipping and supplies in place to invade Almagan and Anatahan ASAP even without full preparation. Invasion forces for Saipan are well on the way to staging areas.

• Lots of things and people on the move. At Aitape a Rgt is loading for the invasion of Almagan.

• Tomorrow we will have 35 ready B-29's at Darwin. Mulling over the idea of holding them until I take and build Makassar, then hit Singapore by surprise to interrupt the magic pipeline. More B-29 squadrons are on AKV's now approaching India, and still more will follow, all will bein place for such a surprise.

• A Bn might be enough for Almagan, so one prepared is loading and will land ahead of the partially prepared Rgt now loading. If so, this will prevent any recovery time for the 65% prepared Rgt. Similarly a convoy is being dispatched to pick up the Bn 100% prepared for Anatahan in the event bombardments of that enemy enclave follow the pattern seen on Agrihan and Almagan.

• All of the Saipan invasion forces will be at their staging areas in about a week. The farthest of those is Nauru, where the Americal Division is waiting, so an amphibious convoy is forming at Pagan and will go there. Other units are waiting on Mussau Island, at Rabaul, and on Ponape. The rest are either in the Marianas or will land there shortly as noted. The goal is to land a force which can defend itself in the first wave, let them recover fully while the second wave is brought in, then assault when the entire force (very large) is present.

• Our steady, massive battleship bombardments are consuming an enormous quantity of supply. We have lots on the way; I hope it doesn't become a limiting factor.

I have B-17Ds bombing troops at 2,000 feet. The Japanese have no AAA. Good training.

Escort abandons search for sub

• The invasion of Almagan will be in about 5 days and it looks as though the Bn will have an easy time of it.

• Great progress is being made toward the invasion of Saipan but I do not yet have a date estimate for the first landing. Three Inf Rgts and an HQ for Saipan are unloading at Agrihan. Another HQ for Saipan will begin unloading there tomorrow. The Americal Div is combat loading at Nauru Island and will take on supplies at Ponape.

• It will be a while before the two fully prepared divisions are at their jumping off place for Babeldaob; I'm toying with the idea of landing at that place after Saipan but before Tinian. The fleet carriers will not be needed for Saipan or Tinian but the old battleships will be needed there. I could use four of the fast battleships for a landing bombardments at Babeldaob. Current Recon at DL 8/10 is 10 units; 23,500 troops; 135 guns; 123 AFV. We have an USMC division and an USA division prepared. No landing shock attack will be required, but it will still be an extended battle.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• The 22nd will pursue to meet out damage.

• One unit, reduced to 300 troops and 8 guns so far as we can tell, has moved into the jungle east of Prome. There is one unit left in Prome, of 2,860 troops and 27 guns. All the B-24J have retargeted.

• The invasion convoy for Ramree Island is about 10 days from Chittagong where the assault forces will load.
