Before you read on and learn about the momentous result which took place on 3 October 1942, I must set the scene somewhat. I am catching up on real time and still have a way to go. Naturally writing after the event has meant that I have not conveyed what played on my mind before certain events. As for the action of this day things had been brewing for some weeks. The Imperial Japanese Army had elected to establish an outpost of sorts in Moulmein. Basically 15th Army, 55th Division and an outlandishly large collection of AA Battalions which had come to call this place home. I must admit to being rather at a loss as to how to deal with the fortress of Rangoon. I knew there were numerous Allied units there and it would be a manpower sinkhole to eliminate. What to do…. Well dithering came to mind as a brilliant plan and so the 15th, the 55th and their hangers on attempted to entrench at Moulmein. Supply had also become an issue. It had dwindled away particularly after an almighty Allied stack of LCUs appeared across the river at Martaban. Hexs around Moulmein quickly flipped to Allied control and the noose tightened on my outpost. Then the inevitable happened… the Allied stack began moving across the river. I had a choice of stand and fight or retreat to the jungle hex of Thanbyuzayat and hope that the Allied juggernaut might find the jungle going difficult enough for it to be of advantage to Imperial Japan. So, in most uncharacteristic Japanese style the order was made to withdraw to Thanbyuzayat and dig in. This took place some weeks ago and there has been feverish fort building taking place. Then a day or so previously the gigantic Allied stack arrived. I knew it was big but my, my, I was mortified to see the size of the Allied push. The men of the 55th would have to show the highest of high fighting mettle in the forthcoming battle.

55th Division stands strong. The forts drop by one but the grievous loses suffered by the Allies gives me strong hope that these men in a far-flung jungle outpost may indeed blunt this attack. As it is the troop capacity for this hex is 55 000. I think the Allies have devoted far too many units to this venture. I hope that this will not bode well for this Allied force. Meanwhile a convoy transporting 9th Division is on the way from Singapore. It is hoped that the Allied forces will fully commit to this hex and leave a minimal force at Moulmein. Some quarters of the Imperial Army harbour a strong belief that the Allies can be trapped if Moulmein were to be taken by a surprise sea borne invasion. This desire is tempered by the Navy strategist who worry over the unknown location of the Allied carriers. There is a risk that the Allied fleet may have moved to the Indian theatre but the possibly of a great land victory is too much to pass up. 9th Division sails on and reinforcements will not be far behind.

The good news is that looks like most of the troops that would typically be in the India Burma area and no American units present besides a few air units. That means he cannot sustain loses on the scale he just took for very long and since two units were destroyed he will have to start combining Indian units to fill out fewer and fewer of them along with the slow pace of British and Aussie reinforcement s squads, you stand a good chance of inflecting heavy casualties on him and even turning the tables on him with enough reinforcements and taking control of the air and bombing him.It appears he was saving everything up for this attack and was hoping to steam roll your one unit there, maybe he was expecting something smaller, possibly a BDE. I would say you have a golden opportunity to cause some very serious damage to his LCUs engaged and force him to ship US units there to help hold the front once you cripple this stake of fragile allied LCUs.

If he actually attacked using the battalion sized LCUs (and it looks like he did), he made a huge mistake. Probably 60% of his losses were due to that. His division sized LCUs may be in better shape than you think. The only one he has to worry about for replacements is the 18th British.

I was expecting a Japanese retreat. The result was brilliant and fills me with hope that the 55th can hold the line.

This may well be the case for this attack. If Ed did that I would love to find out post game why he did so. The next Allied attack will tell much about the future of this hex.

The battalion sized units are best used as garrisons. There are many locations in India requiring 5 to 30 AV for the garrison requirements, and many of the units covering those locations at game start are either oversized for the job or slated for withdrawal (or both). So it is a good idea to save the non-withdrawing battalions for rear-area security, not for front line duty.

This was such a great result. Many troops lost in the water and what is left now most unlikely to become hard to dislodge reinforcements at Moulmein. The loss of Kitakami, Oi and Naka to the British TF was acceptable in that it meant the British hunters did not get a sniff of my transports. Most importantly from this turn is the swift capture of Moulmein by 9th Division. The back door to the Allied land assault has been closed. The Allied super stack now has a movement arrow pointing towards Moulmein. 9th Division is ordered to immediately start digging in. If the whole Allied stack turns up it will be the turn of the 9th to stand up and be counted.
