Allied Turn May 19, 1942

Previous Axis Turn:
Clear everywhere.

Talinn is attacked by bombers, corps and an panzer but holds out for another turn at 5 strength. The German fleet prevents any thought of evacuation by sea.
A Soviet corps in the forest southwest of Luga is attacked and reduced to 7 strength.
A Siberian army and a Russian corps to the east of Smolensk take 4 and 3 damage respectively.
A German corps moving north from the Bryansk area encounters Timoshenko's HQ and does 8 damage to it (or maybe got help from a bomber to get to 8 damage)*
The drive on Stalingrad is delayed as the Germans move to counter the flanking corps near Stalino. After 3 bombing runs and a diverted panzer the corps is eliminated.
One of the Soviet corps that had moved up to behind the river southeast of Rostov takes 8 damage from multiple attacks.

There is no push into Iraq this turn.

Greece joins the Allies.

*An annoying big mistake on my part. The HQ wasn't visible to him at the start of his turn, but was later and I didn't provide the HQ with any ZoC defense from the south. Shame on me.

Allied Turn
Clear everywhere.

Wilmshaven and Osnabruck are both strategically bombed for 4 damage each.*

The train does a point of damage to a Finnish corps on the coast.

* It's not very MPP effective bombing towns apparently, as Germany only lost 4 MPP according to the report.

Allied Turn June 10, 1942

Previous Axis Turn:
Frozen in the Arctic. Clear everywhere else.

Talinn is conquered.
A Russian Corps on the road to Moscow is destroyed and an Army is reduced to 3 strength.
Another Russian Corps, east southeast of Rostov is targeted for destruction.
The Soviet Partisan unit is cut off from taking a town by 2 German half strength AT units that move into Kowel and Luck along with a Garrison that moves into Rowno.

A hidden Axis unit retakes the mines at Melitopol.

The Axis start making their way into Iraq, taking Ar Rutbah.

Allied Turn
Frozen in the Arctic. Mud in Russia (of course on my turn). Clear everywhere else.

Lancaster bombers flying for the Briey mines encounter fire from an AA unit in Luxembourg and take some casualties. Expectedly, the mines have been up upgraded to level 2 themselves.
The Lancasters 2nd wave targets the Saar mines. 3 damage was done to both sets of mines.

The probing Russian Corps from the Crimea retreat, unable to snag a town or city and likely something nasty moving from the east to potentially cut them off.
Russia takes an undefended Ivalo in northern Finland.
A bombing run on the northernmost Finnish corps does 2 damage to it at a cost of 2 damage to Soviet Fighters and Bombers. I believe 2 damage was done to the Finnish fighter as well.
Light Tanks then attack the same corps and do 2 more damage while taking 1 back.
A Soviet Army from Lappeenranta swap hexes with the Light Tanks and exchanges a point of damage with the same Finnish Corps.

The Roma is Launched. A message is addressed to the Regina Maria is delivered from the British Admiralty, "Red Rover, Red Rover send the Roma on over."

Allied Turn June 28, 1942

Previous Axis Turn:
Frozen in the Arctic. Clear everywhere else.
A German Panzer, a Romanian Army and a Garrison unit push the Russian Corps plugging the Crimea gap back and reduce it to a 1 strength.
A Panzer Grenadier scouts just south of Rostov then moves back out of view.
Air power, Nebelwerfers and waves of German Infantry breach he fort and river line between Smolensk and Vyazma. A Soviet Army and Corps is destroyed, and a AA unit takes 3 damage.
Luga is shelled by a Rail Gun.

The Axis push further into Iraq and are now 2 hexes from Ramadi.

Allied Turn
Frozen in the Arctic. Rain and Mud in Finland. Clear everywhere else.

Among Ultra's reports is an Enigma decryption of a message to a German sub located northwest of the Azores.
A destroyer is nearby and closes in and tracks the crippled sub down, and puts it out of its misery.

The Soviets push south of Ivalo a few hexes.
The weather prevents any offensive action in southern Finland. The Armored Train is outfitted with chrome wheels and fuzzy dice.
The Narva to Luga to Novgorod defense line is static.
The Moscow defenses are shuffled and reinforced.
In the south Soviet forces cautiously advance forward towards Rostov. They retake Morozovsk and move up to the river fork 3 hexes from Rostov at the closest.
The units in the Crimea go into full retreat mode.
The frustrated Russian Partisan unit starts calling itself 'The Swamp King'.

The Greeks continue to hide behind their borders.

A Siberian army along the Don river fork is attacked by air and a Panzer Grenadier. Soviet fighters take 4 damage and the Army 6 damage, while Panzer Grenadier took 2 and an unknown amount was done to the German air units.
The Panzer pushes forward in the Crimea and retakes Simferopol.

The Axis push through Ramadi and take Tikrit.

Allied Turn July 26, 1942

Previous Axis Turn:
Frozen in the Arctic. Clear everywhere else.

Luga is attacked. The Army takes 3 damage, and some damage is done back to the attackers, including Panzers.
Vyazma is attacked. The Corps takes 8 damage. The Germans move up to face the line to Rzhev.
Kursk is taken.
2 Panzer Grenadiers destroy a Soviet Army west of Morozovsk. They take 3 or 4 points of damage between them.
Bombers and a 6 strength (2 exp) Panzer attack an upgraded Russian Garrison in the mountains northeast of Sevastopol and make no headway. The Panzer leaves, and a German Garrison moves into Simferopol.

2 German Tactical bombers attack the elite upgraded Garrison in Bagdad. The city has also increased it's AA. The German bombers are intercepted by UK fighters. This is followed up by a Panzer attacking the city twice.
The Garrison holds out without any losses, but morale and entrenchment are suffering.
The German Recon sweeps north taking Kirkuk and the oil fields.

Allied Turn
Frozen in the Arctic. Sandstorm in Iraq*. Rain and Mud in Finland.* Clear everywhere else.

Bomber Command targets the Dortmund mines for 6 damage.
8th Air Force switches targets and hits the Bor mines in Yugoslavia for 4 damage.
A Greek Corps moves next to Skopje, to find the German Garrison there has been upgraded.

2 11 strength Siberian Shock Armies attack a 9 strength German Corps (1 exp) south of Vyazma and do all of 3 points while taking 1 back to one of the Armies.

* The weather is now really pissing me off. Not only in Egypt but now in Iraq, my opponent gets clear skies and I can't use my planes!!!!

Allied Turn August 9, 1942

Previous Axis Turn:
Frozen in the Arctic. Sandstorm in Iraq. Clear everywhere else.

The Light Tanks in Finland are bombed and attacked and loose 3 strength (down to 8).
Luga is hit with a Rail Gun and 2 Panzers and falls. A German Infantry Corps takes the city and does 1 damage to the AA unit to the north.
Vyazma is the next target and suffers under Rocket attack and 4 Bombing runs. The Soviet AA and Fighters account for themselves rather well scoring hits on each run. Unfortunately the defending Army cannot withstand that and the wave assault of Infantry attacks that follow.
Once Vyazma falls attacks are made on the Army to the north, flanking the fortification line. That Army barely survives at 1 strength.

Baghdad falls to German Artillery and a Panzer assault.
An undefended Mosul also falls.

German Maritime bombers flying from Copenhagen attack a UK sub on the Norwegian convoy line, finding it immediately (lucky, or perhaps they got it from Intel). The German bomber runs into fighters from a nearby Carrier.
The Sub takes 2 damage, but the bombers decline to fly a 2nd run.

Allied Turn
Frozen in the Arctic. Clear everywhere else.

Lancasters hit the Loos mines for 6 damage.
US Fighters fly a recon mission over central France, and find a German Garrison unit in Paris.

The Greeks take a little bit more of southern Yugoslavia, including the town of Monastir.
8th Air force (US Strat bombers) bombes the city of Skopje for 4 damage bringing it to a value of 2. There are 2 Greek Corps next to the city and it is occupied by a German Garrison with level 2 weapons.

A German HQ southeast of Ramadi, Iraq is struck by 3 UK Tactical bombers and 2 German fighters come up to defend it.
I believe the German fighters took 6 damage (4 & 2) and the HQ took 5 damage. UK losses were 5 damage (3 & 2) to 2 fighters and 3 damage (2 & 1) to bombers.
There are more Germans in Iraq than expected and UK land forces are forced to pull back, instead of pushing forward and attacking.

The Russians make do what they can at Moscow and Leningrad, but it involves slow painful retreats and a lack of units to fill a proper line.*
In Finland the Armored Train faithfully does 2 damage to a Finnish Corps.
In the Crimea, with the Panzer absent, the Soviets push out again. The German Garrison in Simferopol is surrounded by 2 Corps and attacked. The Garrison is reduced to 2 strength and forced to retreat. A Russian Garrison then occupies Simferopol.

Greek morale is raised by the presence of British troops.

The Iraq convoy line is no more.

* This stinks: A Soviet 11 strength Shock Army with a prepared attack bonus next to a German 10 strength Army (with 2 exp) that has 0 entrenchment in Vyazama has a combat prediction of 3:0. The Shock Army is maxed out (lvel 2)
and not only can't touch the German unit but would get hosed attacking.

Too tired to do a turn today, and not really in the mood for what I expect to be bad news when I look at the replay.

I did get the pictures up from the last 2 turns.

I think I'll replace the 1941 edited pictures with the full view pictures this weekend.

In the meantime I'll keep chanting this to myself:

Can it be really considered a 'minnie AAR'? There's more maps and details than a 2 regular AARs.

Well, compared to my past effort where I recorded each individual attack my opponent made, it might be considered a mini. It's a lot less effort.
The maps aren't that hard. Just multiple screen shots and then using paint to line them up and overlap them.

Allied Turn August 23, 1942

Previous Axis Turn:
Frozen in the Arctic. Clear in Iraq. Clear everywhere else.

The Finns attack the Armored Train with an Army and 2 Corps, to no effect.
A Soviet corps southeast of Luga is destroyed via concentrated fire and flanking of the fort hexside.
The Germans occupy the abandoned fort acting as a choke point west of Narva*
In the air battles west of Moscow, the Russian fighters take it heavily on the chin. I'm suspecting the German fighters have been upgraded to 3.
The Russian Corps south of Rzhev takes 3 damage, mostly due to the flanking of the fortification. If it did anything back it was minimal.
The next target was an 11 strength Siberian Shock Army in a forest southeast of Vyazma. It gets shattered, but not before doing 1-2 points of damage back to at least 4 different attackers (including a Panzer twice) and absorbing attacks from 6 units.
A regular Russian Army in Kaluga is attacked by 2 Italian bombers and 1 German bomber. Both Italian bombers take multiple hits from AA fire (AA unit behind the city & the city/army itself), and the German bomber took at least 1 hit if not 2.
The city is then attacked, including by a Panzer but manages to hold out with the defender is down to 3 strength. Some hits were scored back. The Panzer retreated behind German line as there are 2 Soviet Tank units behind the city as well.
German Medium Bombers hit a Russian corps probing the Belgorod/Kharkov area and a Panzer moves into Belgorod.
In the Crimea, the cut off German Garrison moves off the hill onto the road towards Kerch.

Going from bad to worse we move to Iraq where...
The Germans destroy a UK Corps and then hide the attacking Panzers behind a German Army.

* I really hate abandoning such places but the Army there was needed elsewhere. More evidence that I probably shouldn't have built the Engineer for Russia.

Allied Turn
Frozen in the Arctic. Clear everywhere else.

One Soviet Corps in the Crimea destroys the cut off German Garrison, then moves into the neck and forward elements report no Axis presence in Kherson so the other Soviet corps liberates the town.
The Russians push the line slightly westward in the area of Voronezh.
A Russian Destroyer in the Black sea scouts Odessa and finds it is held by a Bulgarian Garrison.
The lines are dressed in front of Moscow.
A Soviet Corps actually has decent attack prediction against the Panzer (9 str 1 exp) occupying Luga and takes it. The corps takes 3 damage but inflicts 2 on the Panzer.
A Russian Army then moves up and swaps places with the Corps and exchanges fire with the tanks, with both taking 2 damage.
Next Soviet JS I heavy tanks move next to the 5 strength Panzers and attack twice and shatter the German Panzer Corps while taking 3 damage.
Rokossovsky decides to press the attack and orders another Corps into Luga to attack Kesselring's HQ, and does 3 damage to it.
Soviet tactical bombers then fly, unopposed, against a German Corps without AA equipment in a clear hex to the southeast of Luga and do 3 damage, while taking 1.
The Armored Train faithfully does 2 damage to a Finnish Corps on the coast, and earns itself a 2nd pip of experience.

UK Spitfire VII fighters in Iraq flying recon draw German fighters and exchange 2 damage, their target hex contains German Stukas (Tac bombers) and they strafe them for 2 damage.
Another group of UK Spitfires is sent on a fighter sweep and engages the same wing of German fighters, this time the UK comes out slightly ahead taking 2 damage while doing 3 damage.
UK bombers then make 3 runs at the German HQ and do 4 damage to it.
A UK corps steps out of Najaf and attacks the 7 strength (1 exp) Panzer in Baghdad and exchanges 2 damage with it, then steps back into Najaf.
The Canadian tanks then move forward and attack Baghdad doing another point of damage to the Panzers (now strength 4) who then flee the city.*
UK land units then fall back to defensive positions.

1 American and 2 British Battleships soften up Tobruk (reducing Readiness and Morale damage). The UK warships both took a point of damage from return fire.
American troops then assault the beaches at Benghazi and Tobruk. Both towns are occupied by non upgraded Italian Garrisons.
2 US Corps take Benghazi and 2 US Armies take Tobruk.
Both Armies and 1 Corps took 2 damage in the landings, and none in the attacks.

The Greeks take Skopje with attacks from 2 Corps and an Army against a level 2 and dug in German Garrison (though at 4 supply from previous US strategic bombing), at a cost of 3 damage (2 & 1) to the Corps.
US B17s bomb Tirana and Tirana's port down to 3 each.

*Damn, I was going to kill that panzer and get it out of the middle east for good until it fled.

Italian Morale takes hits for the loss of Benghazi and Tobruk.

Allied Turn September 6, 1942

Previous Axis Turn:
Frozen in the Arctic. Unknown in Iraq. Clear everywhere else.

2 Finnish Garrisons (lvl 2) and a Corps attack the Soviet elite Garrison (lvl 1) in Hanko and do 2 damage to it. It's probably not too much longer they can hold out as their supply is running low and the port is still blockaded by 3 German surface ships.
A Finnish Army attacks a Russian Army and does 2 while taking 1.
The Russian Corps that moved into Luga attracts nearly all the attention of Army group north, and succumbs to all the attacks. It did 1 damage to a Panzer and perhaps another point to something else.
It's noted that the Germans are now at level 3 Panzers.
The Russian Corps south of Rzhev is destroyed, mostly due to the fortification being flanked and numerous German attacks.
The Corps southeast of Rzhev and behind a river takes 3 damage after the Germans advance from the previous battle.
The Russian Army in Tula is attacked by German Paratroopers and then a German Panzer. The Army takes only 1 damage and does at least 3 damage (if not 4) in total to both attackers.
A German Corps rails to Nikolayev to prevent the Russians in the Crimea from being able to immediately reach another town or city.

The Germans shift the AT unit into Baghdad, a Corps moves to the southwest flank of the AT and the German Recon unit follows to complete the line. The other units are hidden from view and are either repairing or upgrading.

The Italian Corps in Tirana attacks the Canadian Corps (stupidly put out of supply) to its south and does a point of damage to it.

Allied Turn
Frozen in the Arctic. Clear everywhere else.

Bomber Command targets the Dortmund mines and finds that the AA unit previously in Dusseldorf has moved to protect both the Dortmund and Essen mines as well as the city itself. The Bombers avoid damage and do 3 to the mine.
Their next run is switched to the Saar mine and they do 3 damage to it.

The American forces start spreading around northeastern Libya.
A British Light Cruiser scouts up the middle of the Adriatic Sea and finds nothing. Royal Navy and USN Carriers follow her and then strike an Italian Destroyer in Fiume and sink her. Italian and German subs are spotted at Acona and Pola, respectively.
The Roma is believed to be in either Trieste or Venice.
A large fleet follows to protect the carriers in the narrow sea.

A set of bombers fly to the location where the German HQ was last spotted in Iraq to find that it is 1 hex to the west and a Panzer is in it's place. UK Fighters & Bombers take 2 damage each. German Fighters take 2 damage and the Panzer 1 damage.
The HQ is then targeted with following results: UK Fighters 2 damage, UK Bombers 2 damage, GE Fighters 2 damage, GE HQ 2 damage.
The 3rd sorte results: UK Fighters 2 damage, UK Bombers 1 damage, GE Fighters 1 damage, GE HQ 2 damage.*

Soviet Tanks move in front of the infantry line south of Kaluga to engage a German Panzer unit (7 str, 1 pip exp still level 2 iirc). They exchange 3 damage each, the Russians taking a little more than expected.
Russian elite Heavy Tanks then move in and shatter the panzers while taking no losses themselves. The Heavy Tanks, then retreat by hex swapping with an Infantry Corps.
The Regular tanks decline to do the same trick as it wouldn't put them behind the line and worse would leave them in Kaluga instead of in a forest and behind a river from 2 hexsides.
The Armored Train does its consistent 2 damage to a Finnish Corps.

* Threatening the destruction of the HQ and reducing supply is stalling the Germans. I won't be able to keep it up forever though, and I'm outgunned in ground units.

Allied Turn September 20, 1942

Previous Axis Turn:
Frozen in the Arctic. Clear everywhere else.

The Russian Garrison in Hanko is attacked by a Finnish Corps and 4 Garrisons, but manages to survive at 1 strength. It probably won't last through the next turn.
A massive bombing campaign is run against Rzhev and the Soviet Tanks near Kaluga. The Tanks are subjected to 5 runs themselves.
Russian fighters account for themselves better this turn, and the AA does as well. Almost all of the bombing runs inflict 1 hit (of unknown damage) on the bombers and some take 2 (vs. fighters & AA).
The Tanks are then eventually shattered, with the final blows ignominiously delivered by Italian Corps.
Rhzev collapses under heavy assault from various German Infantry units. The AA unit behind the line is attacked multiple times as well and reduced to a 2 strength.
In the Crimea, the Corps in Kherson is attacked by a Panzer Grenadier and rebuffs them inflicting 1 or 2 damage.
The German Corps that railed in from Nikolayev is then joined by another and they move next to Kherson.

3 German tactical bombers attack the Corps in Najaf, Iraq. They are all intercepted and hits are exchanged between the opposing air forces. Ground fire also takes some German bombers as well.
The German ground forces then advance with an Army taking Kut-al-Amara and Najaf after forcing the defending Corps to retreat (now at 2 strength.

An Italian Garrison rails to Split.
The German sub comes out of Ancona, scouts the edge of the Allied fleet in the Adriatic then disappears.
The Italian corps in Tirana abandons the Albanian Capital and moves to Scutari.

Allied Turn
Frozen in the Arctic. Rain in Finland. Clear everywhere else.

Intelligence reports that German Medium bombers are stationed at Mostar, Yugoslavia and that there is an Italian Mechanized unit in Cetinje, Yugoslavia.

Bomber command hits the Briey mines twice for 7 total damage.

The presence of the German bombers in Yugoslavia is worrisome. It's either prelude to a counterattack against the Greeks or the fleet. If the fleet it would mean fighters must be around somewhere. The US 8th Air force is sent on a Recon run to find out.
8th Air force flies over Sarajevo, and are intercepted by German fighters in Belgrade. Seafires from HMS Courageous engage the Germans as do the new model B-17s. German Fighters take 4 damage, Courageous air wing 2 damage and 8th Air force 1 damage.
Just as important the German Maritime bombers are spotted in Sarajevo.
A 2nd run is made at Sarajevo, this time escorted by HMS Ark Royal's Seafires. The German fighters take 2 more damage and Sarajevo is reduced to a value of 4 (2 dmg each run). Hopefully reducing the effectiveness of the German Maritime bombers.
Seeing the situation as, in the words of a bug eyed alien Admiral, "It's a trap!" the Royal Navy and USN elements decide to not go looking for the 2 subs and the Roma and instead go after the Medium Bombers.
HMS Ark Royals planes attack the Medium Bombers and are intercepted by another group of German fighters stationed in Bari, Italy. The Ark Royal's Air wing takes 4 damage, the German fighters 2, and the German Bombers 2 as well.
HMS Formidable, from south of the Heel of Italy off the Greek coast, draws off the 2nd interception of the German fighters stationed in Italy. Formidable's Air wing takes 2 damage, the German Fighters 1.
HMS Courageous then takes a run at the Medium Bombers doing 3 damage to them.
Next the Wildcats from USN Ranger take their shot. They do 2 damage to the bombers, and take 1 back.
A Heavy Cruiser pulls up near Bari and finds that the German fighters are Fock-wulf 190s (level 3).
A 2nd strike from HMS Courageous shatters the Medium Bombers, at a cost of 2 more damage to her air wing. Courageous moves further south.
USN Ranger's 2nd strike hits the Maritime Bombers for 2 damage, as she also moves south.
Finally HMS Ark Royal takes her 2nd strike against the Maritime Bombers for 2 more damage, then moves south as well.
A Greek Army then takes Tirana.
The other Greek Army attacks the Italians in Scutari and does 2 damage to them.
An Italian Garrison is spotted south of Nish.

The Americans consolidate Eastern Libya.

A second look at the depressing map in Iraq, and it's noticed that there is a Panzer unit in the marsh. There's an opportunity to get rid of a good ground unit that won't be replaced in the theater.
It probably will cost the loss of the Canadian Armor unit, and/or poor air engagements, but the decision to try is made anyway.
The results from the first bombing run: GE FTR 1 dmg, GE Tank 1 dmg, UK FTR(#1) 2 dmg, UK TAC 1 dmg.
The results from the second bombing run: GE FTR 1 dmg, GE Tank 1 dmg, UK FTR(#2) 1 dmg, UK TAC 2 dmg.
The results from the third bombing run: GE FTR(#2) 1 dmg, GE Tank 1 dmg, UK FTR(#2) 2 dmg.
The Canadian Tanks move next to German Panzers to discover they are down to 1 strength. The Panzers are destroyed and the Canadians take 1 damage back.
The Canadians take a 2nd strike at the German Recon unit in Najaf and do 2 damage to it.

The Armored Train does it's 2 damage to a Finnish Corps. It falls back and is replaced by the Soviet Light Tanks. There is the promise of upgrades, 'Wheel Spinners" and "Shag Carpeting" are desired.
A Russian Cavalry finds a German Garrison holding Kursk.
Then in a "Hit them where they ain't" attack, 2 Russian Corps and the Cavalry destroy the Garrison in Kursk. A Corps liberates the city and the Cavalry backs off to the east.

The Allies liberate Albania.
Italy looses morale for loss of Albania.

Allied Turn October 8, 1942

Previous Axis Turn:
Frozen in the Arctic. Clear everywhere else.

The German Fighter in Bari, Italy leaves.
A German Garrison rails into Pristina, Yugoslavia.
The Italian Corps in Scutari, Yugoslavia is reinforced to 8 strength.

The Canadian Tanks in Iraq are subjected to 2 bombing runs by German Tactical bombers. Both are intercepted by UK fighters, but only the first bombing run has German escorts.
UK fighters take 4 damage from the 2 engagement, while the German escort fighters, and both German bombers take an unknown amount of damage from the UK fighters. While the Canadians are softened up.
The Canadian Tanks are destroyed from the attacks of German Infantry and the Recon unit.
German Panzers then move through the battlefield to attack the 8 strength UK Corps. The Corps puts up a better fight than the low supply and shell shocked Canadians did. The Panzers take 2 damage, while the UK Corps takes 4.

The Russian Corps in Kursk, and the supporting Corps just to the south attract a large amount of Axis attention. 5 Bombers, mixed German and Italian and including a Medium bomber from each, strike the Soviet forces with the Corps in Kursk taking the brunt.
2 German Panzer Corps then attack and the Russian Corps in Kursk is destroyed, though the Germans neglect to move in and the other Corps is reduced to 8 strength. Each Panzer took a point of damage.
Multiple German infantry units take out the Russian AA gun east of Rzhev without taking damage themselves.
In the Crimea a German Corps attacks the Russian Corps in Kherson, with neither side taking any losses.
The Panzer Grenadier then takes the crossroads to Kherson and retreats back behind the river.
A Finnish Corps one shots the Russian Garrison in Hanko.

Allied Turn
Frozen in the Arctic. Mud in Western Europe, Ukraine and Finland. Clear everywhere else.

The UK Corps and 7th Armor pull further back in Iraq.

The Saar mine is bombed for 6 damage (down to 0).

The fleet leaves the Adriatic.
A Greek Army does 2 damage to the Italian Corps in Scutari.

The Armored Train gets it's Wheel Spinners and Shag Carpeting.

Ukrainian Nationalists rise up (iirc, this is a Corps for Germany).

Allied Turn October 30, 1942

Previous Axis Turn:
Frozen in the Arctic. Clear in Western Europe and the Ukraine. Possibly Clear in Russia (either the Axis planes in Russia didn't fly due to weather or to recover).

German Medium Bombers from Fume, Italy and I think a land unit (not sure which one) attack the Yugoslavian Partisans north of Mostar and damage them.
The Italian Corps in Scutari leaves (not sure if it walked or railed) and is replaced by an Italian Mechanized unit.

The Axis pause in Iraq to sun themselves. No movement is detected.

In the Crimea, the Panzer Grenadier attacks the Russian Corps in Kherson and does 1 damage, but takes 2 itself. They then retreat behind the river again.
One of the German Corps then attacks Kherson and does 1 damage to the defenders.
The Germans retake the vacant city of Kursk.
A Russian Corps 2 hexes east of Rzhev is attacked by a German Corps. Katyusha rockets protect the Russian position behind the river and the German Corps takes 2 damage.
The Swamp King Partisans had moved next to Baranowicze last turn, and the Slovakian Corps moves into the town and does 2 damage to Partisans.

Allied Turn
Frozen in the Arctic. Rain in Western and Southern Europe as well as the Ukraine (which I think is part of Western Europe). Rain and mud in Russia. Sandstorm in Iraq. Clear in Finland.

The Americans advance into Egypt taking Sidi Barani and Mersa Matruh.

2 Greek Corps tag team the Italian Garrison south of Nish and destroy it.

Light Tanks exchange 1 damage with a Finnish Corps. Then the Armored Train swaps places and does 1 more damage to the Finnish Corps.
The Russian Corps retreats from Kherson.
The Swamp King retreats back into his domain.

A sub (presumably) raids the UK to USSR Convoy line for 21 MPP.

Allied Turn December 13, 1942

Previous Axis Turn:
Frozen in the Arctic. Clear in Iraq. Mud in Finland. Snow & Mud in Russia. Mud in Western Europe and Ukraine.

An Italian Garrison Transport runs into a Canadian Destroyer west of Corfu, Greece and takes 3 damage before sailing up the Adriatic. I'm not sure if it came from north and was scouting or if it came from Taranto or some other Italian port.
A German bomber destroys the Yugoslavian partisan unit.
An upgraded Italian Garrison moves to protect the south eastern flank of the Mechanized unit is Scutari.
A German Corps shows up south west of Pristina.

An Iraqi Garrison crosses the border into Persia 2 hexes away from Kermanshah and spots a Russian Garrison in the Persian Town.
The Axis take Nasiriyeh, Iraq.

German Bombers hit The Swamp King and reduce them to a 2 strength.
The Finns Do-Si-Do the damaged Corps with a fresh one again.

Allied Turn
Frozen in the Arctic. Snow in England. Mud in Western Europe and Ukraine. Frozen in Russia. Rain and Mud in Finland. Clear in Iraq. Sandstorm in Egypt

A US Army presses up to Alexandria, and finds the Italian Army there is at strength 8.
A RN Cruiser spots another Italian Army (str 10) in Port Said, before returning to blockade duty.
2 RN and 1 USN Battleships shore bombard the Italian Garrison to the south east of Scutari. Shaking the unit badly (no damage points but significant Readiness & Morale reduction).
The Greek Army in Tirana attacks the Italian Garrison and does 2 damage and forces it to retreat. The Greeks choose not to advance.

Russian infantry units south of Leningrad do their own hex swapping next to the German lines. The units taking up the front now have level 3 infantry weapons upgrades.
The Soviet Armored Train does it's faithful 2 points of damage to a Finnish Corps.

Allied Diplo success with Turkey +9%.

German sub/raider inflicts 24 MPP loss on the UK to USSR convoy line.

Allied Turn January 14, 1943

Previous Axis Turn:
Frozen in the Arctic. Snow & Frozen in Russia. Frozen in Western Europe and Ukraine. Rain in Greece

More Corps (German, Bulgarian & Italian) show up to contain the Greeks.

German troops advance to contact on the Southern wing of the Moscow line near Tula.

Allied Turn
Frozen in the Arctic. Frozen in Finland. Frozen in Russia. Snow and Mud in Western Europe and Ukraine. Clear in Iraq. Sandstorm in Egypt

The Americans move a 2nd Army adjacent to Alexandria.

A Russian Destroyer finds a German sub just north of Murmansk, no damage to either unit in the engagement.
The Russians attack the coastal Finnish Corps du jour. Katsuya rockets remove the entrenchment, then the Armored Train does 2 damage.
The Train then swaps position with light tanks that do another a point of damage and force the Corps to retreat at 5 strength.
Even with Infantry Weapons 3 and planned attack bonus, there are no acceptable attack options against the Germans south of Leningrad.
Soviet Tactical bombers plink a German Corps south of Tula for a point of damage while Italian fighters engage Russian fighters with both taking 1 damage.
The Russian Army in Tula does another point of damage to the same German Corps.
The Russian Army in Kaluga does a point of damage to an Italian Corps that moved next to it.
A Soviet Mechanized unit moves southeast of Kaluga, replacing a Corps that has the dubious honor of moving in front of a Panzer at the far south eastern flank, and does 2 more damage to the Italian Corps.
North east of Kaluga, a Russian Army does a point of damage to a different German Corps.
That Army then hex swaps with a Shock Army to it's north. The Shock Army then does another point of damage to the German Corps.
A Couple of Russian Corps push out from near Voronezh into the 2 forest hexes to north west to apply a bit of pressure to the German flank.

Saudi Arabia moves closer to the Allies +21%

Allied Turn February 25, 1943

Previous Axis Turn:
Frozen in the Arctic. Snow & Frozen in Russia. Snow in Western Europe and Ukraine.

German, Romanian and Bulgarian Corps all attack a Greek Corps in the mountains. The Bulgarian Corps is the only one to suffer any damage (1 point).
A German HQ and Fighters are now in/near Nish, Yugoslavia.
German Maritime Bombers in Taranto attack 2 Commonwealth Light Cruisers. Each mission is intercepted by fighters from Carriers and the bombers take 3 hits (2 from interceptions 1 from a CL), while damaging the CLs 3 points each.

An Italian Army moves north of Cairo.

A German Army moves into Qurna and is surprised by the 7th Armored just southeast of the city behind a river. The Germans take 2 damage (down from 9), while the armor takes 3. :(
A Soviet Corps in Ahwaz is revealed.

Axis forces pull back away from Kaluga.
German Panzers do 2 damage to the Russian Corps next to them southeast of Tula.
The German sub moves away from the Russian Destroyer.

Allied Turn
Frozen in the Arctic. Frozen in Finland. Frozen and snow in Russia. Frozen in Western Europe and Ukraine. Rain in England. Clear in Iraq. Clear in Egypt

A Greek Corps pulls back so as not to be next to 4 Axis Corps.
HMS Courageous and Formidable (CVs) counter strike the German Condors (Maritime Bombers) in Taranto. Each Carrier's wing is intercepted by German fighters in Naples.
Results: CV Air -2 damage, CV Air -2 damage, GE FTR -3 damage, GE Maritime Bombers Shattered (3 damage).

The Americans take Alexandria with the defenders doing a single point of damage to an American Tactical bomber.
2 US Armies & 1 US Corps complete the job. The Corps takes Alexandria while the 2 Armies press up to the Nile next to a German Garrison in Cairo and the other Italian Army to the north of it.
A third Italian (or rather 2nd after the one in Alexandria was destroyed) army is spotted in Port Said. 2 British cruisers then blockade Port Said.
American B17B (level 2 Strat bombers) then strike Cairo for 4 damage and Port Said for 4 damage.
HMS Ark Royal, from off the Palestine coast, sends scouts planes east of Amman, Jordan and finds another Italian Army in Jerusalem.

The 7th Armored in Iraq retreats southward towards Kuwait.

The Russians press northwards from the Crimea, with a Corps moving next to a German Corps along the road, a 2nd Russian Corps attacks a Bulgarian Garrison in Kherson doing 2 damage, and a 3rd Soviet Corps moves behind the one against the German Corps.
The Russians apply pressure, but no attacks, on the flanks of the Germans at the Moscow front. There are 2 Russian Armies and a Corps next to Rzhev along with another Russian Army visible to the northeast of the town.
The Russian Armored Train is outfitted with Neon running lights, a super charger, a custom paint job and vanity (license) plates.

Turkey moves towards the Allies +9% (and presumably stops shipments to Germany as they swing to the Allied side of influence)

The results of surprising contacts are often, ehm, surprising, especially for the defender.

It certainly was for me with an entrenched level 2 Armor unit that was also behind a river.

That's what I meant, you probably wouldn't suffer such casualties in case of a "normal" attack, and in case of a surprise I would expect the surprised unit to suffer huge losses, but not the defender.

Taxman is winning big time....

I fight on never the less until he asks me to give up... (Pls ask me!)

He sunk most of the Italian Navy and can move freely in the Med. Go for Egypt as right now then Italy and binding up my forces in the Balkans. By summer of 43 the Russians will move west and on top of this there might be a D-Day. My strong forces in Iraq can't get out of there. Taxman played very well and is the best Navy player I've seen so far but that doesn't help against Sugars strategy. I tried to do what Sugar did to me... it looked so easy but it isn't.

It's hard to say.
On one hand Germany is likely to sew up Iraq and declare war on Saudi and deny the Wallies 100 MPP/turn (UK is already without the 56 Iraq per turn and the USA's 38/turn from Saudi will go as well); and their units feel near impenetrable to Russia attack. If he can go on a strong offensive in Russia and have enough strength to come back and beat the Americans away from Cairo he might still pull out a victory.

On the other hand, he hasn't taken any of the big 3 Russian cities and all those units in Iraq might've been partially why he hasn't. Additionally there may not be enough units there to both kick the Americans away from Cairo and to plough into and through Persia. Even if there is, it will take time to do it. While Germany has Greece contained and will likely push them back, it is a pretty nice air base to go after Italy and means that Sicily could potentially be skipped, or to launch strategic bombers from.

Offensive actions for the Wallies are still somewhat limited due to the horrendous casualties the UK has taken and the subsequent damage to her economy. However, it took a lot of time for the Axis to break through Egypt and a fair amount of MPP damage to Germany as well. Is it enough for the Russian war machine to switch from survival into offensive mode? We'll see.

I missed Rannug61's response as I was typing mine up.
I'd like to address it:

1. I'm not going to ask anyone I play to ever give up. However, I will accept resignation, if not with full graciousness, at least without complaint.
2. The destruction of the Italian Navy was due to multiple reasons. The biggest were that: a) Germans never came out of the Baltic except with an odd sub or two; b) I find that CVs in the Atlantic are often Meh due to the frequency of storms;
c) You didn't protect the Italian fleet, so a CV I was expecting to use as escort wound up being able to launch it's own raids.
3. Maybe I'm missing something, but if the Russians start moving forward in the summer 43, it will be on the edges and flanks and due to number oozing. I'm waiting on and still have a lot to build of their expensive offensive units. And their planes are still far behind in Tech.
4. As for D-Day, I did consider it seeing as how poorly defended the French coast was (nothing but Garrisons and I think some of the Western ports may even have been empty). I rejected it because I felt it would only amount to an expensive distraction as you would rail forces back and crush it and then send them back to Eastern Front.
That didn't seem necessary as your push forward slowed down and then the weather changed.
5. Yes that strong force in Iraq is trapped there, I wondered why you switched your push toward Stalingrad in 1941, to Moscow in 1942. I sacrificed tons of UK MPP/units to slow the drive through the Middle East to pay for time for the Russians to mount some defenders in Persia that would buy more time to the point where things stalemated against the Germans.
It worked, but the UK is low on units and hurting in their income. Not as bad one might think, because seeing what was going to happen, I invested in Industry Tech for them. For the cost of 2 Armies I now have level 4 Industry and am at the beginning of starting research for level 5. It has finally made it to the point of almost making up for the lost income each turn.
In the meantime I could barely keep up reinforcing my units (and they started suffering poor morale) and try and keep up with some Tech; but that meant not buying new units or even replacing the shattered ones until just the past few turns.
6. Thank you for the compliment, I find it mildly amusing because the Naval system is the game mechanic I dislike/disagree with the most. Additionally, if I had been better at the naval game all those German land units would never have made it to Libya in the first place.
7. I, or rather the UK mostly, had below average luck with the weather. The UK and USSR both didn't get favorable breakthroughs (i.e in critical areas). On the other hand I got incredibly lucky that Spain didn't go over through Diplomacy. If I understand Sugar's basic strategy at some point if Spain isn't going to come to the Axis via Diplomacy then you force the issue (see complaints about the related DE)
