Allied Turn September 20, 1942 Previous Axis Turn: Frozen in the Arctic. Clear everywhere else. The Russian Garrison in Hanko is attacked by a Finnish Corps and 4 Garrisons, but manages to survive at 1 strength. It probably won't last through the next turn. A massive bombing campaign is run against Rzhev and the Soviet Tanks near Kaluga. The Tanks are subjected to 5 runs themselves. Russian fighters account for themselves better this turn, and the AA does as well. Almost all of the bombing runs inflict 1 hit (of unknown damage) on the bombers and some take 2 (vs. fighters & AA). The Tanks are then eventually shattered, with the final blows ignominiously delivered by Italian Corps. Rhzev collapses under heavy assault from various German Infantry units. The AA unit behind the line is attacked multiple times as well and reduced to a 2 strength. In the Crimea, the Corps in Kherson is attacked by a Panzer Grenadier and rebuffs them inflicting 1 or 2 damage. The German Corps that railed in from Nikolayev is then joined by another and they move next to Kherson. 3 German tactical bombers attack the Corps in Najaf, Iraq. They are all intercepted and hits are exchanged between the opposing air forces. Ground fire also takes some German bombers as well. The German ground forces then advance with an Army taking Kut-al-Amara and Najaf after forcing the defending Corps to retreat (now at 2 strength. An Italian Garrison rails to Split. The German sub comes out of Ancona, scouts the edge of the Allied fleet in the Adriatic then disappears. The Italian corps in Tirana abandons the Albanian Capital and moves to Scutari. Allied Turn Frozen in the Arctic. Rain in Finland. Clear everywhere else. Intelligence reports that German Medium bombers are stationed at Mostar, Yugoslavia and that there is an Italian Mechanized unit in Cetinje, Yugoslavia. Bomber command hits the Briey mines twice for 7 total damage. The presence of the German bombers in Yugoslavia is worrisome. It's either prelude to a counterattack against the Greeks or the fleet. If the fleet it would mean fighters must be around somewhere. The US 8th Air force is sent on a Recon run to find out. 8th Air force flies over Sarajevo, and are intercepted by German fighters in Belgrade. Seafires from HMS Courageous engage the Germans as do the new model B-17s. German Fighters take 4 damage, Courageous air wing 2 damage and 8th Air force 1 damage. Just as important the German Maritime bombers are spotted in Sarajevo. A 2nd run is made at Sarajevo, this time escorted by HMS Ark Royal's Seafires. The German fighters take 2 more damage and Sarajevo is reduced to a value of 4 (2 dmg each run). Hopefully reducing the effectiveness of the German Maritime bombers. Seeing the situation as, in the words of a bug eyed alien Admiral, "It's a trap!" the Royal Navy and USN elements decide to not go looking for the 2 subs and the Roma and instead go after the Medium Bombers. HMS Ark Royals planes attack the Medium Bombers and are intercepted by another group of German fighters stationed in Bari, Italy. The Ark Royal's Air wing takes 4 damage, the German fighters 2, and the German Bombers 2 as well. HMS Formidable, from south of the Heel of Italy off the Greek coast, draws off the 2nd interception of the German fighters stationed in Italy. Formidable's Air wing takes 2 damage, the German Fighters 1. HMS Courageous then takes a run at the Medium Bombers doing 3 damage to them. Next the Wildcats from USN Ranger take their shot. They do 2 damage to the bombers, and take 1 back. A Heavy Cruiser pulls up near Bari and finds that the German fighters are Fock-wulf 190s (level 3). A 2nd strike from HMS Courageous shatters the Medium Bombers, at a cost of 2 more damage to her air wing. Courageous moves further south. USN Ranger's 2nd strike hits the Maritime Bombers for 2 damage, as she also moves south. Finally HMS Ark Royal takes her 2nd strike against the Maritime Bombers for 2 more damage, then moves south as well. A Greek Army then takes Tirana. The other Greek Army attacks the Italians in Scutari and does 2 damage to them. An Italian Garrison is spotted south of Nish. The Americans consolidate Eastern Libya. A second look at the depressing map in Iraq, and it's noticed that there is a Panzer unit in the marsh. There's an opportunity to get rid of a good ground unit that won't be replaced in the theater. It probably will cost the loss of the Canadian Armor unit, and/or poor air engagements, but the decision to try is made anyway. The results from the first bombing run: GE FTR 1 dmg, GE Tank 1 dmg, UK FTR(#1) 2 dmg, UK TAC 1 dmg. The results from the second bombing run: GE FTR 1 dmg, GE Tank 1 dmg, UK FTR(#2) 1 dmg, UK TAC 2 dmg. The results from the third bombing run: GE FTR(#2) 1 dmg, GE Tank 1 dmg, UK FTR(#2) 2 dmg. The Canadian Tanks move next to German Panzers to discover they are down to 1 strength. The Panzers are destroyed and the Canadians take 1 damage back. The Canadians take a 2nd strike at the German Recon unit in Najaf and do 2 damage to it. The Armored Train does it's 2 damage to a Finnish Corps. It falls back and is replaced by the Soviet Light Tanks. There is the promise of upgrades, 'Wheel Spinners" and "Shag Carpeting" are desired. A Russian Cavalry finds a German Garrison holding Kursk. Then in a "Hit them where they ain't" attack, 2 Russian Corps and the Cavalry destroy the Garrison in Kursk. A Corps liberates the city and the Cavalry backs off to the east. The Allies liberate Albania. Italy looses morale for loss of Albania.
