Turn 9. Jan/Feb 1941. Axis #3. Germany Aligns Finland.

Editor's note: The Soviets could have broken the pact last impulse and declared war on Germany. If they had, then Germany would have lost the opportunity to align Romania and Yugoslavia. So conquest of one or both would have been the only option. Germany should have gotten more troops/planes to the border to have prevented this. If this had been an actual competitive game against a human opponent then I have believe that the USSR would have declared war on Germany, which would have changed the entire trajectory of this game. In order to keep this game on a somewhat historical trajectory I elected to "overlook" Germany's pact deficiency and let them address it this impulse.

Turn 9. Jan/Feb 1941. Axis #3. Germany & Italy Declared War on Greece.

Editor's note: I learned something either that I didn't know or at one time knew and had forgotten. Because both Germany and Italy declared war on Greece, even though it was on the same impulse, the allies got to roll twice for US entry chits. However, Germany could have declared war on Greece and Italy, because they're active, would have automatically been at war with Greece. However, Italy would not have received any benefits of the surprise impulse. In order to they would also have to declare war, which they did.

Turn 9. Jan/Feb 1941. Axis #3. East Med.

The Italian RM reestablishes supply to Graziani's army in Egypt and put's an amphibious invasion force (for Greece) at sea. Unwilling to risk any of this the RM smartly chooses not to attempt to initiate a naval combat; however, the RN does in hopes of disrupting both Italian supply to Egypt and their amphibious invasion force for Greece.

The Italian RM is able to avoid naval combat.

Turn 9. Jan/Feb 1941. Allied #5. East Med.

A disaster for the RN in the East Med. Though far out numbering the RM in all sea boxes, the Italian RM is able to isolate the 3-box, force a surface naval combat and have sufficient surprise points (i.e., 6) to target and sink the Queens with a 7-3 inf corps slated for Athens and damaged the light carrier Argus.

Turn 9. Jan/Feb 1941. Axis #12. Assault on Athens.

Though it may sound odd but storms actually helped the odds of the axis assault to take Athens. Still, only a 60/40 chance with the axis made good on.

just a note - the USSR can break the Pact as one decision. Declaring War on Germany is a second decision, not required by the first decision.

The Axis would be crushed in this game, with the USSR breaking the Pact, just about forcing a German DOW, and the USA likely entering in the summer of 1941.

Yes, the right thing to do with the USSR would be to break the pact and start retreating from the border back to better defensive positions. It's 1941 and it could save important units now sitting at the border. Germany is not in position to attack the USSR too. So why not harm the economy of the Reich by cutting off the oil they are getting from Uncle Joe.

Hi rkr1958

If you can break the pact with the USSR then, from an historical perspective, I hope you decide not to. Every single action taken by Stalin in the run up to Barbarossa and every initial action for sometime afterwards seems to confirm one thing. Uncle Joe had NO intention - certainly in 1941 - of declaring war on Germany.

I definitely didn't. I finished reading "Nohman" this past Friday and I have to say it left me with a perspective on the Soviet and Japanese military and command that I never had before. I found the political maneuvering by Stalin very intriguing. And, the fact that the Japanese high command let mid level officers (majors and colonels) have the power that they had and get away with what they did amazed me. In my game the Soviets have no intention of doing anything to antagonize the Germans; especially breaking the pact.
