Been thinking about the upcoming Okinawa invasion. I've done a pretty good job of minimizing losses in the war, while steadily advancing. But I think the time has come for a change in approach. Okinawa must be taken, and it is a tough target. Enemy troops are dug in, mines are there, it is within air range from Japan, and most importantly, enemy battleships and cruisers can attack the landing zones at night and be back in Japan during the day. It's going to be tough.

I need to change my mindset, I think, and use brute force at Okinawa. I need to accept losses in order to take the island. At this point in the war, I can certainly do so. I will need to flood Naha and Nago with minesweepers, and hit them with slow battleships daily. And cover the targets with battleships and cruisers to guard against enemy ships which certainly will arrive.

There will be losses. I need to accept that. Okinawa is a necessary step for the future landings on the southern island of Japan. It's time to throw the kitchen sink at it.

The usual 5 slow US battleship bombardment of Hong Kong. The British are slowly making their way to the hex between Hong Kong and Canton. The battleships are headed to Takao. They'll then head towards Okinawa with the carriers covering.

Sub Sterlet hit patrol boat Shirogane Maru near Toyohara. No indication of sinking. Could have been a false report. Tautog sank sub chaser CHa-31 near Fukue-jima. Searaven hit xAK Goyo Maru with a torpedo near Chichi-jima. No troops on board.

26 Georges swept Miyako-jima, and found 25 P-47s on CAP. It was shocking. 22 Thunderbolts were shot down with no Georges downed. The enemy swept at 30000 feet. The P-47s were at 25000 feet. A contributing factor could have been that there is no radar at the island. The base support was flown in, and the radar is inbound on a ship. The P-47 pilots were excellent. The George pilots must have been god-like.

Okinawa invasion shipping is leaving Manila. Other shipping is starting to load at Takao.

Over 60 Franks swept Changsha. P-40Ns, Spitfires and P-38Js were on CAP. 16 Franks were downed, for the cost of 4 Chinese P-40Ns, 3 P-38Js and 3 Spitfires.

A bombing raid of Pucheng, east of the Chinese pocket, revealed the enemy 1st Raiding Regiment defending. Looks to be a unit that was sent from Japan to hold the line in front of Shanghai. The Americans weren't headed that way, but the enemy didn't know that. I'd seen transports coming and going from Shanghai, so troops were sent to China from Japan. I'm quite ok with that.

Still reducing the isolated enemy 1st Division at Temuloh in Malaya. They are being destroyed, but only slowly.

US carriers and slow battleships will move east of Formosa, beginning the run into Okinawa. Transports will leave Takao tomorrow and join up with others coming north from Manila.

No turn from OPilot today. He's dealing with a massive reorganization of Japanese air units that occurs on March 1, 1944. I'm happy to see March arrive. I'll be getting 175 P47D25s a month instead of 56 P47D2s. I'll finally be able to use the Thunderbolts every day. I bleed the P47D2 pool dry as it is now.

Invasion of Okinawa within the next week.

Those pesky Georges on Okinawa were at it again. They swept Ishigaki, finding 15 P-38Js and 12 Hellcats. The George pilots are definitely elite, with lots of US planes downed. 7 Georges were downed, mostly as ops losses. 9 Hellcats and 6 P-38Js were lost.

Allied planes from Milne Bay swept Rabaul, with 16 Corsairs and 14 Spitfires sweeping. They found 32 Zeros and 24 Tojos. 6 Zeros and 4 Tojos were shot down, for the cost of 8 Corsairs and 3 Spitfires.

The approach to Okinawa has begun.

Shark fired 6 torpedoes at I-12 north of Okinawa. All missed. Pompano hit RO-104 with 2 torpedoes near Tokunoshima, sinking the Japanese sub.

The fight for Okinawa has begun.

Battleships Arizona and Idaho, with 3 destroyers, ran into 5 MTBs at Nago. 3 MTBs were sunk. The range was just 2,000 yards, so the US ships were lucky to avoid torpedoes. One was fired at a battleship and missed.

Similar fight at Naha. Battleships Oklahoma, California and Tennessee, with 5 destroyers, ran into 2 MTBs. An MTB was sunk. With rain at Naha also, the range was just 2,000 yards. Both Naha and Nago had 4 US destroyers run into the bases first, but the DDs didn't engage the MTBs.

2 US DMS at Nago were fired on by the 11th Special Base Force. DMS Southard was set on fire. 4 US YMSs were also engaged by the 11th. 3 were set on fire.

At Naha, 4 other YMSs were engaged by the 21st Special Base Force. 3 were hit. 3 US DMS sank ACM Wa 20 at Naha. A big cruiser force sank a fleeing MTB from Naha. The cruisers were protecting the carriers east of Naha.

Nago was bombarded effectively.

Night Naval bombardment of Nago at 95,65

Japanese aircraft
no flights

Japanese aircraft losses
D3A2 Val: 8 damaged
D3A2 Val: 1 destroyed on ground
Ki-51 Sonia: 22 damaged
Ki-51 Sonia: 2 destroyed on ground

Allied Ships

BB Arizona

Japanese ground losses:
1150 casualties reported
Squads: 3 destroyed, 9 disabled
Non Combat: 39 destroyed, 40 disabled
Engineers: 6 destroyed, 4 disabled
Guns lost 5 (1 destroyed, 4 disabled)
Vehicles lost 2 (1 destroyed, 1 disabled)

Airbase hits 16
Airbase supply hits 5
Runway hits 31

Naha was bombarded but with poorer results.

Night Naval bombardment of Naha at 95,66

Japanese aircraft
no flights

Japanese aircraft losses
N1K1-J George: 1 damaged

Allied Ships
BB Tennessee
BB California
BB Oklahoma

Japanese ground losses:
333 casualties reported
Squads: 2 destroyed, 8 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 19 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled

Manpower hits 1
Fires 1575
Airbase hits 2
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 8

Lots of mines were swept at Nago and Naha. The 3 US DMS were hit by more coastal guns. RO-44 sank already badly damaged YMS BYMS-2043 near Naha.

The enemy lost an ACM, 2 AMs, 5 MTBs, 4 SCs and 1 or 2 subs. The Allies lost 2 YMSs with a few more badly damaged and trying to make it to safety. I've been particularly effective at losing lots of small minesweepers to coastal guns.

There was no enemy flying above Okinawa. Lots of B-24s hit both locations. Carrier aircraft sank 2 AMs and 3 SCs in port at Amami Oshima.

CVs and CVEs will rendezvous 2 hexes west of Nago and will range CAP at range 2. I showed a more forward setup first, but will back off to the west now. Nago and Naha will be invaded today. 3 divisions to Naha, 2 to Nago.

Two instances of ship collisions. Two xAKs collided east of Luganville. They were empty and headed back to the West Coast. xAK B.F. Irvine sank immediately, with xAK Sapphire damaged at SYS 2/FLOT 33/ENG 30/FIRE 0. Two LSTs loaded with troops collided west of Nago. Both are headed to Naha, now very slowly, and in their own TF with a small escort ship.

Looks like Nago had low forts and Naha has level 5 or more.

Combat troops unload completely in one day at Nago and Naha on Okinawa. All of the good APAs were used. A specialized amphibious HQ on command ships were used at both locations. Troops will attack at both locations today. There are many units at both bases, but none are particularly strong. No divisions and no unit with more than 100 combat value. The US divisions should prevail here, but with the defensible terrain and the forts that must exist, it won't fall immediately. Battleships will continue bombarding and bombers will continue hitting the troops. Another YMS was lost to coastal guns, but the enemy fire has been reduced. All mines at Naha have been swept. Several LSTs were damaged by coastal guns but damage is just minor or moderate. 4 LCIs were also damaged. No enemy air or naval interference.

Mostly British troops have moved into Hong Kong, which will be attacked today. 2 US slow battleships are supporting, and many, many bombers are contributing.

Unloading continued at Nago and Naha, mostly supply. Another LST is hit by coastal guns but not badly damaged. Battleships continue to bombard.

18 P-38s swept Sian, finding 28 Oscars and shooting down 12 of them.

Allied troops at Hong Kong need resupply before continuing the attack.

All 3 bases will fall rather quickly. With most unloading on Okinawa complete, the CVE task forces will pull back to friendly islands to the west, while the CV task forces will move southeast and possibly head east to go hunting for a bit, if they aren't spotted in today's move. If they are spotted, they'll probably return to port for fuel and rearming.

Damaged Yorktown did some minor repairs on Formosa and is now leaving Takao for Manila.

Is Manila's SY large enough to accommodate Yorktown? Or maybe you have an ARD large enough there?
I think HK comes with a size 50 SY.

Manila is a size 20 shipyard, and Yorktown (the original Yorktown) has a tonnage just below 20k, so it will fit. Manila isn't ideal for such a big repair though. I have many subs cycling in and out, and after each big invasion, all of my invasion shipping passes through Manila for fuel and repairs. So it gets crowded.

Hong Kong is a size 50 shipyard. I think it too close to enemy bases to repair a carrier. Hanoi isn't that far away. Yorktown would be too tempting.

The way the war is going, Yorktown's part in the war is probably over regardless. I expect to invade the southern island of Japan in about a month. The wait is for preparation values, and getting the troops out of China and back to Luzon for upgrades and rest.

US destroyers sank ACM Shawa Maru #10 at Nago.

Submarine Barbel had quite a day. Barbel was transiting from Pearl Harbor to Manila. It's a new sub and hasn't been on a combat patrol yet. But on the way, north of Pagan, it spotted a transport task force with an LSD, a CL and multiple DDs. One torpedo hit destroyer Arare. Later in the day, Barbel was reported to hit destroyer Ushio with a torpedo, but I'm fairly sure it was the same destroyer hit in the first attack. The destroyer appeared to be alone, with the sub escaping detection after the attack. Either way, it was a great day for a new sub crew not even assigned to a combat patrol yet.

The big news was at Hong Kong.

Ground combat at Hong Kong (77,61)

Allied Shock attack

It's looking like a 3 to 1 auto-victory will be achieved when bases are captured on the southern island of Japan, barring a botched invasion or lots of shipping sunk. If those bases are captured and the auto-victory occurs, OPilot may surrender. I already get the feeling from talking to him that things are worse for the Japanese than I realize. My guess is that cutting off so much oil in 1943 has really hurt the Japanese economy. My experience as the Japanese, in such a situation, is that there isn't enough supply or fuel in Japan, and that affects just about everything. I look forward to a detailed discussion with him after the war ends.

Slow US battleships continue to bombard troops on Okinawa. Now that the bases are under US control, the enemy is in the field and harder to hit.

Canton is bombarded by British and Australian cruisers and destroyers. Moderate damage. Time to make life miserable for the 140,000 enemy troops trapped at Canton.

Cleanup continues at Temuloh in Malaya. The enemy is said to be "surrounded" so the end should be near. Shock attacks continue. The Allied troops are tired but there will be plenty of rest at Singapore after this fight.

Cleanup began at Hong Kong, with 1576 enemy casualties reported. The enemy is reported to be "surrounded" here also.

3 US divisions start to load at Swatow, headed back to Luzon for rest. Manila is almost at its stacking limit, so preparations for Japan will take place at Manila, Batangas and Naga. Batangas is a size 5 port, and Naga is being built up as fast as possible, and will be a 5 for the loading in a month or so.

Canton was bombarded again by many British and Australian cruisers. Assume that this will occur every day until Canton has no enemy in it.

Reduction of the isolated enemy at Nago continued. The casualty ratio was 1510 enemy to 271 friendly. Enemy squads are being destroyed. Same story at Naha, except that we had a bad day, with the ratio being 1210 enemy to 1000 friendly casualties. The enemy at Temuloh in Malaya continued to be whittled down, but they won't give up. A 98 to 1 attack resulted in 891 casualties. They are still "surrounded" but still fighting. The end has to be near. I said that last week too.

And a similar story at Hong Kong. A 45 to 1 attack with a ratio of 887 enemy to 59 friendly casualties.

I feel like the game is now in the "end game" stage. The only planned targets are finishing off Canton in China, and taking the southern island of Japan, and the small islands to its south and west. It'll take about a month for that invasion to be kicked off.

The first B-29 units are on the map. Each arrived with just 7 planes. One unit is approaching Bombay from Aden. The other two units are loading on ships at Aden. Naha, on Okinawa, can build to a size 7 airfield, so not ideal for B-29s. But from there, they'll be able to range over most if not all of Japan. It's 9 hexes to Nagasaki from Okinawa, so the B-25s can join in eventually. Of course, once the southern Japanese island is taken, it's pretty much over for the war.

I usually park my B-29s at Aparri (or nearby), then Taihoku, then Ningpo as I capture bases. Due to the limited stacking, you might want to keep Okinawa free for fighters, dive bombers and mediums.

Cheers,

Way up by the Russian border on the mainland, I've had a couple of subs watching the approaches to two northernmost Japanese bases. I'd had SigInt months ago that a tanker was going there. I'd mined the biggest base, but nothing was seen there. Until today. Four patrol boats appeared. Pintado missed PB Sonan Maru #5 with two torpedoes. Now OPilot knows that I'm looking here. It's a minor thing. As the Japanese, I'd be using the shallow mined islands from Fusan to Japan, moving just 3 hexes and in protected spots. He probably is.

Two units of Georges coming from the direction of Japan swept Nago. P-47s and Hellcats were range capping from Naha. It went ok, with 15 Georges downed for the cost of 7 Hellcats and 3 Thunderbolts. I noted that he is sweeping at 30,000 feet. I was playing the I can go higher than you game with the P-47s at 35,000. The Hellcats were at 9,000. Worked out ok this time.

Interesting developments at Daito Shoto. This island is well to the southeast of Okinawa, out by itself. I'd been doing some recon there, and it was empty. OPilot noticed my interest, and overnight, four destroyers used fast transport to drop off the 6th Indpt SNLF Coy. Turned out that I was dropping paras there during the day.

Ground combat at Daito Shoto (98,69)

Attacking force 747 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 28

Defending force 405 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 14

A battle of tiny units, won by the paras. Base support will be coming in a week or so. Want to put Cats here to help watch the perimeter.

45 or so B-24s were moved to Naha. They are ordered to fly to Hiroshima at night, in first strategic bombing of Japan. I'm going for a big target with the first strike. I'll be more random after that. And mix in daylight raids. Hit some airfields too. OPilot asked me some questions about kamikazes. I've been expecting them. They are probably being saved for the invasion of Japan.

Congrats on the timing of that paradrop at DS. His troops were likely completely unprepped for that base and with your shock attack they could not resist. One day of delay may have been enough for them to get rid of their disruption and fatigue and hold against you. Moving fast pays off.

27 Frances at Shanghai again tried a night naval strike. Today they found the CVEs just west of Okinawa. All bombs missed, and 6 or so bombers were shot down by flak.

The B-24s ordered to do a strategic bombing of Hiroshima from Naha did not fly. The orders remain.

Perch hit tanker Kotai Maru with a torpedo near Ominato. The tanker was loaded with fuel, and was traveling along the west coast of Hokkaido.

In Malaya, Beaufighters had been moved up the coast to go after a small enemy task force that had been spotted at small ports southwest of Bangkok. Small naval targets and no CAP equals sunk ships. I love these planes.

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Chumphon at 52,66

Weather in hex: Light rain

Raid detected at 32 NM, estimated altitude 8,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 7 minutes

Allied aircraft
Beaufighter VIc x 21

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
AG Ryua Maru, Shell hits 5, Bomb hits 8, heavy fires, heavy damage
PB Menado Maru, Bomb hits 8, and is sunk
PB Fukkai Maru, Bomb hits 5, heavy fires, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
21 x Beaufighter VIc bombing from 100 feet
Naval Attack: 2 x 250 lb SAP Bomb

The odds for the cleanup attack at Temuloh was 215 to 1. Maybe the end really is near this time?

I made a most unfortunate mistake. I had ordered two British armor units to move from Hong Kong to the hex east of Canton. They moved north of Hong Kong, and I noticed that one of them was continuing its movement into Canton instead of moving directly to the northeast. The pathing must have liked the good road into Canton. I fixed this unit. But I didn't notice the other Brit armor unit doing the same thing. Today it crossed into Canton from the southeast, in movement mode, crossing a river, triggering a shock attack and attacking alone. The unit was almost completely wiped out. 150 tanks lost. This was a really good unit and would have helped greatly at Canton. The only two very minor upsides to this fiasco was that the hexside is now closed and 100 of the 150 tanks were obsolete and can now be upgraded to newer models. I list the combat to show the units arrayed on both sides. Over 200,000 Chinese.

Ground combat at Canton (77,59)

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 4010 troops, 99 guns, 282 vehicles, Assault Value = 6068

Defending force 104808 troops, 878 guns, 411 vehicles, Assault Value = 2810

50% bomb hits by those Beaufighters! That is some good accuracy!

The tendency for armoured units to use paved roads when shorter paths are needed is one of the land movement quirks that bugs me. I still don't see why the waypoint routines in naval movement could not have been added into land movement so you can override that tendency. It is also a bit ironic that the vehicles built to travel off-road are the ones most likely to avoid that!

5 US Fletcher class destroyers made a high speed run from Okinawa to the southeastern coast of Kyushu. I was hoping to take out some sub chasers, and to show that I'm knocking on the door. Near Kanoya, the destroyers ran into sub chaser Ch 40 and quickly sank the small ship. That was the only contact made. It probably wasn't worth the damage done to the destroyers from the high speed run, but I wanted to threaten the many sub chasers in the area.

Enemy troops at Nago and Naha were bombarded, as in most nights. US troops attacked in both locations, further whittling down the enemy strength. At Nago, the casualty ratio was 1146 enemy to 170 friendly. A tougher fight at Naha continued, with the ratio being 1452 enemy to 719 casualty. Okinawa fell quickly, but the fight there is still tough. It's a good thing that the 5 US divisions on Okinawa are not assault troops for Kyushu, but it would be nice to have them available as a nearby reserve.

Peggys, probably from Shanghai, tried to bomb Taihoku's port at night. I had tried my night strategic bombing of Hiroshima the night before. The Peggys got one port hit with clear sky and bombing at 15,000 feet. Nothing of importance at Taihoku, but plenty at Takao, so I moved some night fighters there.

Temuloh on Malaya is finally cleared.

The enemy's 1st Division tied up many units at Temuloh for a long time. Most of the Allied units need to move to Singapore to rest and recover. Most have at least 50% disablements. US paras will move to Singapore to head to Luzon.

In the past few days, I've received notice that Shokaku, Taiho and Zuikaku were sunk in the battle near Okinawa.

Thresher hit tanker Arima Maru #4 with 2 torpedoes near Haha-jima. The tanker was carrying fuel and undoubtedly sank. In the war, Thresher has gotten hits on 2 xAKs, an AV, BB Haruna, RO-66, an E-boat, an xAKL, and now a tanker. Only the E-boat and tanker are known to have sunk.

A deliberate attack at Nago reduced the enemy strength a bit more. It's a grind. Naha will be attacked today. Amami Oshima will be invaded, east of Okinawa.

Bettys went after invasion shipping at Amami Oshima. 12 of a reported 13 were shot down.

British slow battleships Queen Elizabeth and Valiant, with battlecruiser Renown, 2 light cruisers and 8 destroyers bombard Amami Oshima while a US armor unit lands. Looks like the 2nd SNLF was in the process of moving to Amami Oshima.

Ground combat at Amami Oshima (98,64)

An attack at Nago gets 25 to 1 odds and causes 1167 enemy casualties, with most squads destroyed. 6 units evaporated by attrition after combat.

Naha has been rougher for the US troops and today was no exception. Progress is slow and costly. I consider myself fortunate to have taken Nago and Naha in the first 2 days of fighting. Cleanup is taking a lot longer.

Ground combat at Naha (95,66)
