Banzais Don't Make Victories

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Between the Storms 5.7 - Anachro vs John 3rd

Due to his game with Kitakami ending or at least postponed due to the issues Kitakami is currently facing in real life, John 3rd approached me about playing a Between the Storms game and I readily agreed. It wasn't just the opportunity to play the Banzai Warrior that drew me in, but the mod itself seems interesting and challenging from an Allied perspective, given the various toys given to Japan (not to mention the fact that the Jack and George seem to be carrier capable).

I know that John will probably try to strike somewhere. I have not read into his and Kitakami's game too much, so I don't really know what his plans were there. I'm guessing either an India or a deep SoPac strike that includes parts of Australia. I would be really surprised if he goes for Hawaii or the West Coast, but we'll see.

HRs are pretty streamlined and minimal, which might come as a surprise to some of you from John's past games. I prefer to let the game engine and player reaction deal with developments as they arise, rather then sticking in some home rule. Hopefully, this doesn't lead to any ex post facto rules discussions in the course of the game. John's only ask was for range bands for the fighters.

Really looking to keeping the amount of "Banzai!" shouts from my opponent to a minimal!
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

1st turn rules:
Allied player only able to command TFs already at sea
No transferring or loading of squadrons
Max 30% CAP set per squadron
No carrier hunting

General House Rules
Pay full PP for units to cross national borders
Maneuver Band rule of Fighters operating only in their best two levels
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

First turn has already been sent in and I should be receiving the replay and then the 2nd turn soon enough. Nothing too special so far other than simply trying to shore-up my various porous areas of defense. My main goal will be to try to fight back when possible other than doing a simple Sir Robin. I do feel it necessary to evac troops from Singapore/ Burma if I can in order to reinforce India. I'm not afraid of early carrier battles if the opportunity presents itself.

As always my guidelines comes from the Skipper himself:

"In carrying out the task you will be governed by the principle of calculated risk, which you shall interpret to mean the avoidance of exposure of your force to attack by superior enemy forces without good prospect of inflicting, as a result of such exposure, greater damage to the enemy."

Hey, I wish I had thought of your title! It's perfect.

John III is a really fun opponent. You'll have a lot of fun. I'll probably read your AAR and his, so I won't post with suggestions, but I wouldn't anyway, because 98.7% of AE players know 214% more about the game than I do.

This should be fun. Is John doing an AAR as well?

I certainly hope John does an AAR, but I believe in our email exchange he wasn't yet sure if he would or not. As for the pipe, I could certainly see myself writing up scenes around events where MacArthur vigorously chews and gnaws the length of the pipe along its stem and bit, but I fear only Chickenboy would appreciate such robust depictions of manly generalship.

With this opponent ... not possible. No matter what happens, you'll hear more than your share of "Banzai!" shouts. Have a great game and lots of fun!

It was my proposal. Doesn't really affect things too much; it was just something I stuck in from previous games I've seen. Turn was already sent in so nothing to be done now.

In other news, there was a bit of a mixup and John called me out on moving troops outside of China (evacuating troops in Malaya to Singapore) on Turn 1 "BEFORE war is declared." There wasn't any specific rule about this and I had done so in past games, but I accept the logic of it. All in all, it doesn't affect things much, but I publish my mistake for all to see.

I have the replay and turn and will report shortly!

As he brought his ship around to help with firefighting efforts, Captain Gary Hoover of the Helena could hardly believe what he was witnessing. With sirens blaring and smoke continuing to bellow forth from the wrecks of Battleship Row, only one conclusion could be drawn: disaster had struck Pearl Harbor. Ten mighty battleships had been in the harbor in the morning and now all ten were in various states of mortal peril.

The California and Arizona were marooned where they had been anchored, as black oil seeped from their sides to cover the bay in a thick sheen. The Washington was slowly sinking into the bay, her crew fighting a an epic battle to keep her afloat. However, it was the Idaho that caused the most shock and confusion. Whereas she had previously been proudly anchored alone in the back of the row, now she simply was not there. Forty-five minutes into the attack, a torpedo had struck her side and breached the magazine initiating a massive explosion that took the ship and most of her crew of 1,081 officers and men down with her. Nothing remained but an unrecognizable mass of steel. Nearby, the destroyer Downes had suffered a similar if less catastrophic fate.

Admiral Kimmel had been caught with his pants down and heart of the Pacific Fleet had paid the price. There was already talk that he'd be replaced and amidst the anger of the present, no one really felt sorry for him. Japan had initiated a massive build-up in recent years and vigilance should have been maintained. That a carrier fleet could approach Oahu without detection was dereliction of the worst sort.

He'd be replaced, that Hoover knew, but he quickly banished the thought from his mind. For now, all he could focus on was the present and the arduous task of preparing for the fight ahead. The Idaho and her crew would be remembered, he was sure, and would make a fitting battle cry in the same vein as "Remember the Alamo!" or "Remember the Maine!", but the time for that would come later.

Not only had the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, they had also landed troops on Malaya and bombed the Philippines and Wake Island. Who knew where they would strike next? While the enemy held the initiative, there was little the United States could do but react. The time for a true, sustained offensive was still far off. Nonetheless, it was Hoover's hope that the initiative would be wrested from the enemy as soon as possible. The cold fury in his heart demanded retribution...sooner rather than later.

Dec. 7th Info

John has done a number of actions, mostly traditional. He did a traditional Pearl Harbor strike with the big KB that did some damage (put all of my PH BBs out of action for at least a few months or more), he has landed troops at Kuantan on the Malaya peninsula, and he struck the port at Manila with bombers from his smaller KB2 that damaged or sank a number of ships and submarines. It appears I lost ~80 aircraft for the day to ~30 for John. Below is the damage at the moment, both at Pearl Harbor and at Manila.

Not much to report yet because I don't yet have a huge inkling as to what his intentions will be. Most of my combat ships should be able to escape the PI, but the Boise and her DDs are at the moment situated in the middle of his CVLs, a BC fleet in Celebes Sea, and a CA force north of Singkawang. I will attempt to get the herd down south as best I can. There might be some opportunity for minor raiding with the DDs coming from Hong Kong, but we shall sea. My initial goal is to harry him and cause some damage to make him more methodical and slow in his invasions to give me more time to build defenses elsewhere. We'll see how well I can do this.

I will get as much oil as I can do Australia. In the mean time, as a precaution, I am building up forts in Ceylon, as well as along the Indian coasts, the US coasts, and the Australian coasts. I plan to build up Diego Garcia as quickly as possible, as well as Palmyra, Pago Pago, and Suva/Noumea - standard stuff.

Lastly, there is one interesting message I got from sigint today: 8/6th Ind.Infantry Brigade is loaded on a Mutsuki class DD moving to Rabaul.

Given the assets I start with in the South Pacific, I think I might go for an intercept here. I'm not really sure what he has in the South Pacific, but it's worth a shot. Naval search should give me a decent enough warning.

Hehe maybe I can keep it that way! John is on a work trip and won't be back till Saturday, I have a little bit of time to work on turn 2. We might be able to get a few turns done if he got his laptop setup, but we'll see. He seems to be quite the busy man.

As for Day 2, I am pondering. He might try to go for a 2nd strike given the damage done to the airfield and part of me is considering doing a sally forth in the night to try to cause some damage. Can't with my BBs, but perhaps with my CAs and CLs at full speed I can do something before retreating in the night. The Kuantan landings are protected by a few BBs, but Force Z has 2 BCs and a BB now...

Decisions. I'll discuss more later when I get to the turn.

I would imagine you have a very large CAP left at pearl since it seems he concentrated on port attack and destroyed or damaged few on the ground. You would be lucky if he tried a 2nd strike given you potential for a large CAP. Since he landed at Kuatan do you suspect a follow up landing at Mersing next? It looks like most of your CAs and CLs escaped damage at PH are you going to sortie them and hope he hangs around for a night battle?

Really surprised that those BBs that took 4 torps did not sink outright!
If he heavily damaged the PH AF and damaged a lot of bombers there, I would expect a second day of KB attacks.
Good luck!

Fast Transport TFs - You will face many of these as they can go where normal Amphib TFs cannot. He learned how effective they can be in a previous game as Allies.

Hybrid CLV & CAVs - Use them sparingly as they convert/upgrade to full CVLs. It will be nice to have 4 CVLs by end of '42.

Subs - He has some with high endurance and they will be off Cali.

China - He has learned that he has to be much more aggressive here than he has been in the past. He will go for Chungking this time around.

I'm on his General Staff, so I've past on my wisdoms from 4 recent games as Japan. Three where with this mod (Lite).

Banzai!! - They will start with the sinking of the "Thundering Herd."

Dec. 8th Plans

1. Night battle off PH with several DD/CA/CL task forces that will try an initial sortie before beating a quick retreat for safer waters south of Pearl Harbor.
2. Gathering forces in SoPac/Guinea for interruption of his fast transport force heading for Rabaul.
3. CL Boise and her DDs will attempt to go the path that the IJN should least suspect: Babeldaob! There is also an unescorted convoy there that might be intercepted.
4. Hong Kong DDs will attempt to rendezvous with some enemy convoys in the middle of the South China Sea.
5. The herd is scattering with the goal of trying to preserve the good transports and at least one of the AS ships.
6. In China, attempting to surround and destroy forces at Ichang.
7. He landed paras at Cotabato on Mindanao; attempting to destroy with LRCAP to hit any more troops transported.

Along with this, building up strong points of resistance in the Aleutians, Noumea/Efate/Luganville/Suva. Evacuation of Singapore with a strong rearguard left behind will take place. Will move more Australian troops to Mersing to stave off a landing.

DD Downes, Bomb hits 1, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk

Considering the Downes was in drydock on Dec 7, that torpedo hit was a work of genius. Banzai!!!!

John was supposed to arrive back from his trip today and promised that he'd start his own AAR as well, at least in the email I received from him on Thursday. However, I have heard nothing as of yet. That could mean something...or perhaps nothing at all. Hopefully, we'll soon find out.

Dec. 8th, 1941

Not the best of days. My surface forces cause no damage; meanwhile, John seems to have carriers and surface forces everywhere. Surface forces materialize out of thin air to strike the herd just as it leaves Manila. A third carrier force with strong surface escorts appear north of Singkawang and strike shipping at Singapore, and a strong CA fleet appears suddenly at Palembang to deliver troops and launch a bombardment.

No doubt, John plans to quickly take Palembang before I can reinforce it or move much of the fuel out. The sad thing is I was planning to place mines, but not this quickly! If anything to me, the first two turns show early signs of an aggressive move on the DEI before making aggressive pushes towards either the SoPac or CenPac. We already know he is quickly moving to take Rabaul, what could be next?

Pearl Harbor

The cruiser task forces out of Pearl Harbor fail to make contact with enemy carriers, but luckily John has moved KB far north and it is thus unable to strike back at my ships. However, that fact that KB did not move west as you would normally expect might mean he is using it to cover future landings over the coming days against Midway. I will keep a careful eye on this.

Taking Midway on its own is strategically useless and it can quickly be taken back. In my mind, it is only worthwhile if you plan to make a future move on Hawaii and Pearl Harbor itself. We’ll see.

Philippines

A cruiser task force appears off of Manila and sinks a number of ships. AS Canopus goes down, as does the ARD Dewey. The damaged SS Sculpin also takes a torpedo from an enemy submarine. These hit my heart deeply. Only hope right now is that the other AS is undetected and unmolested, but it is literally one hex away from an enemy task force! Herd will be dispersed more and some will try to hide in ports he might not expect.

Boise and her DDs escape unarmed (after a number of bombing attacks) and are currently situated just west of Babeldaob. I can either run them south towards Rabaul or Southwest towards Darwin. Not sure which is better at the moment and they would probably still be under air threat from LBA or a full speed KB2 tomorrow.

The British DDs from Hong Kong are running low on fuel and will need to go to Miri to get some. This puts them between a rock and a hard place. Enemy cruisers just to the east and enemy CVs to the west. My undetected AS will try to go full speed somewhere. Any suggestions?

Dutch East Indies & Singapore

A bit of a shock today with a third KB appearing north of Singkawang and it strikes a Singapore whose CAP is diverted fully to escort duty for a later offensive strike, sinking a number of cargo ships and some transports. Kuantan falls today and it appears John managed to land a whole division there! I suffer more destroyed troops but he does take ~900 casualties to my ~500. In a bit of good news, the air force from Singapore managed to strike the transports at Kuantan and sinks two Hakone Maru-class transports. Both are at least reported sunk, with one confirmed sunk in the combat replay.

Farther south, strong cruiser task force lands troops at Palembang and will try to take it very early before quickly moving on towards Sorabaja. They don’t attack my tankers loading fuel, so I manage to siphon some fuel from the place to deny it to the enemy. I expect these to quickly go down tomorrow as they are sitting in the same hex as the enemy. The only hope is that after a bombardment and minor battle in which DM Thracian was sunk, the enemy task force is low on ammo. Force Z was moving south and is now southeast of Palembang.

With KB3’s sudden appearance and the enemy cruiser task force at Palembang, a number of transports are in jeopardy and it will make evacuation of troops from Singapore difficult. Might need to start thinking about flying out some just in case. Fighters will now be dedicated to defensive CAP and more rushed in once loading potentially begins.

Ships Sunk:

PB Eiko Maru also took 2 torps from a Dutch sub and is most likely sunk.

Conclusion

He has a lot more carriers than I thought! The addition of two potent smaller KBs significantly increases the strategic possibilities for the Japanese in the early game. He can essentially cover all or most of his bases in restricting options of retreat in the Philippines, Singapore, and the DEI while also striking Pearl Harbor.

I will accelerate my garrisoning and defensive buildup in the SoPac. I still plan to evacuate troops from Singapore. He cannot keep his KB there forever. This will be reevaluated depending on his future intentions once shown and my ability to extract endangered troops. India needs to be reinforced. The question of how is up in the air until further developments happen.

Addendum: fast transport taskforces are indeed fast

Dec.

If John follows the previous pattern of his games, he will expand as far and as quickly as possible, leaving lots of Allied bases in his rear. Use that against him.
He also loves the possibility of Autovictory so he will go for high value bases like Noumea, Suva and Pago-Pago.
He does not think defensively so he will likely be late getting his rear defences and intermediate speed bumps established. He likes to play far forward.
