(Using tutorials to learn about editor as well.)

In Submarine Tutorial 1.2, the submarine detects the frigate right away while still below periscope depth despite instructions to go to periscope depth and use ESM to detect the frigate. The following special message about being at periscope depth even though the submarine is not becomes confusing.

I made a fix to the scenario (attached) to turn on the frigate's active sonar only after the submarine reaches periscope depth and detects the frigate with ESM. This makes the scenario messages describe the action properly. Plus small text clarification to another message.

Unit Modified: 64068f69-ace0-48f3-842e-338cc0815ad4 (Chinese Frigate)
Change: Sonar Active->Passive
Reason: Frigate is instantly detected at scenario start with towed sonar array if its sonar is active at the start of the scenario.

New Action: 2a_Active_Sonar
On Event: 2_ESM
Lua:
ScenEdit_SetEMCON('Unit', '64068f69-ace0-48f3-842e-338cc0815ad4', 'Sonar=Active')
Reason: Frigate has active sonar as normal for rest of scenario.

Edited Action: 4_Positive
From: Now we’ve positively identified the contact as a Jianghu class frigate — if you’ve been following instructions, it will have been identified by the AN/TB-16D towed array sonar. Other possibilities include the AN/BQQ-5E hull sonar, AN/TB-23 towed array, or even the venerable Mk1 Eyeball if you’ve managed to get within visual range at periscope depth! (check the San Francisco's database entry for an overview of these sensors).

Reason: When it is detected by other than AN/TB-16D, doesn't imply you didn't follow instructions even when you did.

Ah. I believe this is due to extending the range of active intercepts, since it worked as designed when initially written. Thanks for the update, I suppose I'd better look through these tutorials and update them where required.

From an editing perspective, there's also another Chinese unit 40nm NNW that doesn't seem to factor in the scenario.

These 1.x scenarios are well focused and packed with clearly explained information.

I read a guide that said 3.x submarine tutorials were coming. Did you ever make those?

The second chinese vessel is there for a reason; when you look at a contact report and see a list of possible contacts, this list is only populated by platforms in the actual scenario (otherwise there could be dozens and dozens each time) so it's basically there to provide an alternative for discussion.

The 3.x series are on the backburner, I'm working on some more 'interesting' stuff at the moment that has higher priority. The 1.x and 2.x series set players up pretty well to take on the vast majority of situations. Maybe I can find some time to do them in the near future.

Thanks for explanation on possible contacts limited to platforms in scenario. I guess the tactical explanation for that in scenario is you have as rough idea of the OOB of the other side based on time period and intelligence.

Understood on priorities, but if you have more to share, would like to see them. Sometimes the most advanced and minority situations are the most interesting.
