And it was a very rude introduction!

Actually, I thought the Chinese GAR did quite well. It survived, retreated to better defensive terrain, and killed one of the units attacking it. The Japanese might call that a victory (they took the hex), but as the Chinese player I would be pleased.

The IJA and IJN are just sort of... evaporating.

IMO the Japanese are in the same situation that the Allies are in 1940-1941: they really have to be cagey about when they pick up the dice and make an attack.

Turn 27. Jan/Feb 1944. Allied #7.

Actions. US - land, Great Britain - combine, Free France - combine, China - land, USSR - land.

RN/RAF. The Black Sea. Great Britain misses by 1 finding the axis. A miss by 1 is as good as a miss by a mile.

RN/USN. South China Sea. The RN/USN miss finding the Japanese 1 (here too). Again, miss by 1, miss by a mile. Well, that's true when the other side doesn't find either. When they do (find), missing by 1 is much better than missing by a mile.

Turn 27. Jan/Feb 1944. Allied #7.

USMC. The Philippines. USMC amphibious forces storm ashore at Legaspi in the Philippines. This gives the allies a base from which to launch land base aircraft, especially fighters, into the South China and, eventually, China Seas.

Turn 27. Jan/Feb 1944. Allied #7.

Western Allies. Southern France. Allied attempts to breakthrough the axis lines in the Vichy sector of southern France are repulsed with the loss of the US 1st armored division.

Turn 27. Jan/Feb 1944. Allied #7.

Western Allies. La Spezia, Italy. A bold plan to flank the axis in northern Italy fails on a 50/50 by US airborne forces to capture La Spezia.

The drop was executed by two US airborne corps. Originally, this drop was to be made by two corps and one division and would have succeeded if the division had been included. Both the division and the airlift capability were available. The problem was that Allied planners failed to account for the impact of weather on disembarking 2 airborne units into the rough terrain of Ajaccio in Corsica during rain. This location has airlift enough to drop two airborne units but couldn't be used because disembarking any available airborne unit there would have disorganized them. Once this was discovered, allied planners who have airlift capacity in Southern France for two units had to decide to continue or abort. The decision was made to continue and originally the odds for success were around 65% (or ~2 out of 3). However, the addition of Luftwaffe ground support that got through heavy allied fighter cover dropped the chance of success to 51%. Even at 50/50, allied planners considered the potential gain worth the risk. Unfortunately, the attack failed. It it had succeed it was felt that the Germans would have had to respond quickly with forces that they desperately need on the Eastern Front.

In summary, this was not a good impulse for the Western Allies in Southern France and Northern Italy.

This was a foolish decision. It takes far too long to rebuild these expensive and highly usefull units. 50% chance of taking the hex simply isn't enough...

Maybe I'm too much of a gambler, but I'd take that shot again. By my analysis the Germans were in a poor position to respond and this would have forced them to divert resources badly needed in the East, or even in Southern France, to this area.

Turn 27. Jan/Feb 1944. Axis #9.

Actions. Japan - combine, Germany - land, Italy - land.

Japan. Convoy Routes and Production. Japan uses her two naval moves of a combine to get 1 organized CP in Tokoyo and 2 in Canton out into the China Sea and reduce their idle factories from 7 to 4. The remaining 5 CP's in port were all disorganized by the allies this turn and unable to move.

Turn 27. Jan/Feb 1944. Axis #9.

Euro-Axis. The Eastern Front. Though Reich production is out the roof, her resources and troops are stretched to the limit on the Eastern Front.

Army Group Caucuses, commanded by Field Marshall Manstein and "Smiling Albert" (General Kessilring) have made a tenuous link up with Army Group South, which is temporarily commanded by the Italian Field Marshall Grazani.

In the North, through significant pressure applied by Adolf himself, the Finns have taken up positions to protect the northern flank of Army Group North.

Army Group Center has spread out to contain the Soviet push in the middle.

The Middle East. In Persia, if the axis are fortunate enough to have the turn end after this impulse and get the initiative and move first next turn, the Turkish mountain corps is in position to take Bandar Shapta and cut off the entire CW army operating in Persia.

I am curious about the US and German land force pools. I know the US needs units, but they also need O-chits. How close are the two countries to building out their force pools?

Germany's much closer than the US is. In fact, Germany's able to build an o-chit the last two turns when the US has only be able to build one every other turn.
