J/A 42 Allies 10

No DoW or alignments.

Land: China
Combined: The rest.

CW starts with 3 CVP's from Italian Coast trying a port-strike at Cagliari. Surprise: Axis 6, Allies 5. The Allies get two surprise points, which they use to reduce AA fire to NE.

The transport flotilla settles on the bottom but experts reckon they will be salvageable.

CW flies Buffalo from Tripoli to West Med 2-box.

CW TRANS at Bristol loads Mosquito and sails to Gib. Subs from Malta head to the West Med 2-box.

Buffalo initiates combat in West Med and the Mosquito reacts to the 2-box. Germans can react a 2-factor NAV up to the 2-box. Italians can react a 2 factor NAV to the 2-box and a 4-factor or 3-factor FTR to the 0-box. Any additional air?

J/A 42 End of Turn.

Indications of a possible uprising in Yugoslavia were quickly dealt with by the garrison. Elsewhere remained quiet.

USSR puts its pact marker on offence and moves a marker from defence to offence.

USA puts both markers to the Ja pool.

I will really, really be surprised if there is not an attempt by the US to declare war next turn.

Of course, if I were rolling the die, the US would not get into the war until sometime in 1943....

(This assumes that the Japanese do not make a preemptive attack.)

S/O 42 Allies 1

The US congress attempts to pass a bill authorising an immediate declaration of war on Japan. Political analysts and opinion poles indicate the result is the balance and could go either way. In the vote, the isolationists get a landslide victory (50% chance of success, 9 rolled).

Around the country there is a strong backlash against politicians who are believed to be sat in their oval offices and out of touch with grass roots opinion (chits are removed from the entry and tension pools but the likelihood of war increases). Will it get to another vote? Tokyo's reaction remains to be seen.

CW declares 1 combat as the units in Sardinia attack Cagliari. The RN TF in West Med lends a hand with 11 factors of shore bombardment. The RAF contributes the DB-7 from Malta in ground support. Beaufighters provide an escort.

Germany could fly Condors at Florence (2 factors each) or the He-115C at La Spezia (1 factor) in support. The Italians have a multitude available. Do any take to the skies?

The Vichy Oil still seems to be in Syria and has not been saved in Vichy and Lyons.

When I tested this it seemed to work (presumably could travel through Turkey and USSR (as neutral) plus friendly Axis countries). Is this not correct or have we got a problem?

When I did prelim production it worked okay. What I forgot to do was double check it at final production. Having just opened the file at that stage, MWiF has ignored the instructions and reverted back to saving them in Syria.

Want me to have a go at redoing from finalise production?

Alternative is I can probably edit the game file to shift all 5 points to Marseilles. Not sure how to split them into two locations using the file edit.

Edit: I've sent the modified file with the oil points shifted to Marseilles. Had to go with somewhere like Marseilles as it needed a hex with both a city and port to avoid being over-stacked. Hope this is an acceptable compromise as I'm not sure I can exactly replicate everything by redoing from Finalize Production.

You know my feelings on editing the game - and we saw what simply editing the Hurricane did. If we weren't at the stage of the game we are at then we could leave until next turn - but it doesn't look like I have that luxury.

I would prefer to re-do rather than edit as the chances of fouling the game appear high. But because I don't know all the moves (only high level) it would have to be done by you - and I don't feel I should be making those demands on your time. So that being the case let's continue and cross everything.

The placement in Vichy and Lyons was to try and get them as far from Allied bombers in the UK and the Med (and invading forces) as possible. These placements don't over stack. So long as you agree not to attack Marseilles (either Strat bombing or land attack) until we relocate then I don't have a problem with Marseilles.

Editing the game file is certainly something to avoid where possible. That said, changing a unit location is an easy one to do as it only involves altering one value. A number of the players have successfully done this on several occasions with no adverse effect . The issue with the Hurricane wasn’t the location change but the unexpected change to the way Notepad opened the file. Switching to Wordpad had no problem and was able to correct what Notepad had done. I relocated the oil in Wordpad so should be fine.

The Allies won’t attack Marseille this turn and the oils can be moved at EoT.

I use WinMerge to do save file updates and it works perfect. Notepad I’ve never had an issue with as well

As for editing save files I have done heavy edits of save files and as long as you know what you want just post a question in the save game edit thread and I can post tutorial like instructions on the subject. Cheers

Thanks for the responses on editing the game file.

I've successfully used Notepad on a number of occasions previously. However, when I open the files in Notepad with the encoding set to auto-detect, you get this for the 'é' in Béarn and every other 'é'. The same is happening with some of the German and Dutch words that have letters with various accents over them. Seems the characters aren't being recognised. When I then saved the file the unrecognised character was replaced by a string of three pretty meaningless characters. Changing the encoding setting from auto-detect to ANSI opened the file okay.

Wordpad doesn't ask for and encoding settings and opened the file okay, so that was why I've used it for the last two edits.

Thank you for the explanation. Our notepads seem to be different. My notepad doesn't ask for encoding settings, and, barring system commands (chcp), I don't see any way to change the encoding. I took a look at every menu command notepad offers, and none do so.
