So I'm playing the 1942 Guadalcanal campaign 20 some turns.

I originally moved my units to the shore perhaps using too much movement on my turns so I scrapped that and tried the half movement concept ..so if I had 15 moves I would move like 6 and half or sometimes a bit more with my ships, but it takes forever and it's only 20 4 turns or so. Seems like there are wayyyy more Japanese then my units even when they are reinforced.

Now when I right clicked on each of these guys I put first board ships and then mobile minimal losses and with the air (by the way I have no idea what is up with how to use the air in this game) I understand the choices but what to do ...don't know really..I understanding stacking and the reports commanders and unit ….I mean what is listed there. Understand a simple attack and planned attacks for the most part.

My biggest frustration with this game is trying to understand why all of a sudden ...seems like no matter what I do ...I cannot move the unit. For example: I moved my marine raiders and other units onto the beach at the port (for some reason I couldn't just go straight to the beach directly in front. Wouldn't let me go forward ..nope had to go in through the anchor symbol port.) So to continue I moved most of my marines onto the beach /port and in land but for some reason another group that was just right in front of the port ready to go on land ...I right clicked and chose mobile and nothing ..then I tried dividing the units... nothing and then I started just trying everything from embark disembark which I thought would solve the problem ...disembark...but no matter what I did the unit would not move. and this is after several turns...what gives? I guess I don't understand how come several units just don't move or really do anything ...How does the Air work in this game? I understand support in the planned attack screen but what if I just want to hit other units with my air power...how do you do that and please give me specific directions in the game do this and that vs. explaining theory.

Then when I finally get my units trying to conserve movement strength and power with my units in a strong group attack from three to 4 different marine and other units against like one Japanese xx I think and OK the planned was successful ….and then next turn when I put my guys to dig in and defend on the enemy's turn ...that's it I got wiped out I mean units gone. WTF ...I don't get it.

How the heck do you play this game.

I have a hunch that the creators of these games somehow lean the win probability toward the axis powers because ...well it's payback...by computer game. The axis AI always seems stronger not equal but stronger. I like playing allies not axis.

I checked you tube about this game ….old version tutorials are there but since I have version 4 it doesn't apply. No real info on this game ...yes there's a manual.

Why dont'these games include like clear video examples like they give in Operation Barbarossa ...with the Aussie guy going thru the steps....have u seen that? Clear, easy to follow, and apply.

How can you move guys that all of sudden just won't move....how to use air and wtf is the air assistant and how exactly to use it in the game.

Again...good game ….many scenarios but don't care for newbies ..targeted to niche players.

They mention advanced rules playing and standard.....maybe I should play standard first....but I don't know even how to really do that.

I want to win in Guadacanal...remember 20,0000 plus Japanese against a way smaller number of determined marines shooting a crossfire and mowed them down...We did that..No way the Japanese win.

Show me how ….what steps did u take in the campaign?

The overwhelming majority of the TOAW III rules apply to TOAW IV so most of the old manual fit the situation
but there's some new rules in TOAW IV ( like Naval Rules ) so you really do need the new manual too. There's
a What's New document that you may want to peruse. It covers the new TOAW IV stuff.

Select the air unit. Move the cursor over the target and right click. Select the type of attack you want from the list.

Ok then the air unit ….I have done just that ….but I don't see how this is carried out in the game. Yes the list interdiction , air superiority etc....yes I checked that on the air unit right click...that's it?

Even if I haven't given you screen shots I thought I gave a good picture of my attack on the Japanese ..I will add that I stacked them in a strong offense group with tanks and marine units. But about not being able to move the last unit onto the beach ...all you can say is that I'm not a mind reader...that's your assistance. This is why forums bug me. How about giving me some examples or reasons that my unit will not move even after several turns. It should have gained more movement points or something. What to check in the situation if you unit doesn't move. I think that's a straight forward question. I sense your in the good ol boys we know niche wargamer club. How about being more helpful instead Mr. cigar man. I expect another kind of surly remark but hey that's the way these forums go. Ok the you tube using the old version for the new ….I will look for the connections as you say. By the way if someone asked me some kind of question I honestly would try to help and understand the person on the forum. Why are forums always snarky like this ...matrix support ...then support.

stacking is limited to 9 units by hex, this is a possibility to not going into one if it's full.
if all components of a unit are ready and in same hex, they can recombine and gained some place.
hope this will help you a bit

Yes it may help …..I saw recombine but had not chosen that as a possible solution. Thanks

It seems to me the key thing in this game is to know the functions of things preferably in its' entirety. I went through the NK tutorial and yes it helped a lot but still much more to learn.

I'll recheck these tutorials even the older versions again on you tube.

Thanks lobster ….do u know any you tube links that cover specifically the Guadalcanal 42 24 turn scenario. I know there are myriads to choose in scenarios but kind of don't want to quit on this one. I'm a history buff on WW2 and the Pacific War Theatre has always fascinated me. I have been to Gaudalcanal and seen Edsin's ridge and been to the outer islands in Sege too because I'm into snorkeling. The beautiful Marevo bay and an island Tetepare near where the marines fought. So it sticks with me. I have also been to Peleliu / Palau again snorkeling and the list of Pacific scenarios are rare in this wargame. Other than the big game War in the Pacific (cost 90$) and OoB Pacific I do not see many wargames if any that cover Pacific Theatre. And the fact they have Vietnam and the Idrang valley ...I have read all about these combat missions and hell yeah I want to play Vietnam. Other than Rising Storm which is a multiplayer kind of FPS and a low budget Vietnam game like Afghanistan there is no other wargame that has Vietnam...that is awesome. So these are in TOAW 4 and yes also the Ruskies ...man so many scenarios...I lived in Russia for two years and talk to vets some. Old guys very few alive. Most of the old males gone from war. And I got the picture from their perspective. Read Anthony Beevor's Stalingrad ...wow that is gruesome. so this game I'm invested historically and because I have visited battle sites too. You tube link Guadalcanal 42 ...haven't seen it. Can you guys name me some scenarios to that maybe easier to follow ….I guess fewer turns ...I can see that by looking but I mean recommending some scenarios that you can follow easier than others. By the way ….Curtis LeMay organized bombing in Japan and in Vietnam ...I still like Patton, and good ole Doug McArthur....and Carlos Hancock.

Hey David, send me an email ( so I can attach the files to my reply ) and a list of the scenarios you want and I'll send them to you. I've got a few that are rare and I emphatically suggest the Pacific at War v.3.63 I helped the scenario designer playtest that bad boy and I think it's a winner. A lot of these scenarios are among the smaller ones and I've played most of them and had a blast. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

It just occured to me that some of you readers might want some of these scenarios too so I zipped them all up and uploaded it to a file server on the cloud and here's the link to the file as of 05/09/2019 05:22 local Tucson time.:

My suggestions would be to play some of the more easier scenarios first just to get the basics down pat.

Start with some WW1 battles (in the tutorials section), then advance as your learning progresses to more advance scenarios, first tanks and artillery (ranged) and then air. In my opinion you need to master the basics first before plunging into a scenario that is full on combined arms operational warfare with amph assaults.

If you did not understand that the game only allows 9 units in a hex and that some units may or may not be broken down I think you need to learn the very basics first. Obsert Klink has some great tutorials here on the threads.

TOAW since 1990's has been both easy and complex in the learning curve and an awesome game that has lasted over 20 years. There are many fine details that you'll need to discover and learn. Your friend in this endeavor is the Manual, and all the online resources others have already posted and most of all just playing against Elmer (the AI).

More than you could ever play here. Probably have to convert some. http://alternatewars.com/Games/TOAW/TOAW.htm

I know of no Solomon tuts. I'm not into the Pacific scenarios. War in the Pacific:Admirals Edition is too pricey for me. I used to play some Pacific Theater board games. Still have East Wind Rain and War in the Pacific.

Sorry my bad on the You Tube video tutorials.....for some reason I didn't see Agrippa Max Tutorials ...anyway I think following his Iwo Jima scenario will help me. So supply and the time stamp which I kind of understood before in terms of your turn being just a percentage of the whole turn in real time I guess. Basically my attacks carry over into rounds. So maybe that's why I couldn't move my units. The air war I guess because I also play WitW ...I thought that you direct more with this with planes and hexes ...but it just seems that you decide on right click to do interdiction, superiority etc.

About movement when you have say just a single unit to move: So if I have 18 movement points total and I want to get the jump on the enemy first but it takes like 12 movement points or even 14 movement points to get to attack the enemy is that worth it? Or it's a huge problem because I've extended almost all my movement points even though I may get to attack. I'm thinking if I did say half like or even less movement such as 7 tops and then have more left over for another turn (or another part of the turn after other attacks planned..that part confuses me) So say I move my unit only 7 and don't attack but now the enemy gets to attack me first and well then I get hit hard and ahh it's frustrating. Same thing let's say if I have a powerful stacked group but not overstacked and if I have 12 movement point to get to the enemy to attack. This is all about balancing movement and I am not sure what to do. My gut tells me go half and reserve ...its what they say is a general but not hard fast standard if you are not sure how far to move your unit. So I go half. In addition, I"m guessing this whole movement thing varies per unit and type of unit naval vs. land etc. What do you guys do? The time stamp thing is kind of cool but different.

Thanks Zovs …..good I will remember that and try the WW1 scenarios as well. Guess patience and trial and error is needed. If you had 22 movements points in general and you wanted to attack how many movement points would you make in your turn? As a general rule if there is such thing knowing each situation varies. Anything about movement would help here. thanx

Decide where you want to attack. If you are going to attack with units that move different distances the unit that has moved the farthest will be the one that determines how much of the turn the attack will take up. So if you had one unit that started next to the enemy and one that move ten movement points out of twenty to get there the one that moved ten movement points has used up half of it's turn just to get there. That's the one that will decide how much of a turn is taken up since it got there last. If it's a one day turn that unit used up half the day just to get into position to attack. The unit that started next to the enemy waited half a day for the second unit to get there so it too has used up half a day just waiting for the second unit to arrive.

So with that in mind move all of your units but plan attacks based on how much of the turn each attack might take up. Combat is much more involved than it is in the GG games. Don't expect to get it all in one go. It will take some time. Watch the tutorials and they will explain how it all goes.

You might try and corner Larry into playing a short scenario.
