Notes for the 16th:

I've got a pair of DMS that have started clearing mines @ Hong Kong. Almost 100 so far.

For some strange reason Bill moved the 62nd and 13th Chinese Corps from Wuchow and NE 1 hex. I'm obliged to bomb the snot out of them and am doing so. I'm also sending a couple of divisions. A pair of shell-shocked Chinese Corps outta be an easy win.

Over by Rangoon Bill is running little 1-2 ship TFs - small things like HDMLs and xAKL. I've been after them with Lillys and Sallys but all they do is miss. I empowered a fighter squadron of A6M2 to Fly NATK @ 3k out to their max range. They returned dividends immediately.

Morning Air attack on TF, near Bassein at 51,51

Weather in hex: Moderate rain

Raid spotted at 7 NM, estimated altitude 8,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 2 minutes

Japanese aircraft

No Japanese losses

Allied Ships
xAKL Nam Yong, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
HDML Pennigat, Bomb hits 1, and is sunk

Aircraft Attacking:
9 x A6M2 Zero bombing from 3000 feet
Naval Attack: 2 x 60 kg GP Bomb

Heavy smoke from fires obscuring xAKL Nam Yong

Oh yes - I'm still hitting Port Blair's AF also.

@ Kweisui are the 3rd Prov Chinses Corps and the 11th Chinese Corps. I've got three INF Bn. There but I'm waiting for more muscle. Meanwhile I'm using the Chinese units as target practice for a flight of Sallys.

At Borneo I started softening up Jesselton. Not that it needs softening but it gives my bombers practice and Bill doesn't seem to be really defending anything. I'm trying to find a nerve but so far I have come up short.

So with Guam down I turn to Rabaul…

So far I've cleared about 200 mines @ Hong Kong.

Perorations are done.
- My push for Burma is on - I just need troops to march there…
- The same for the PI. I'm pushing troops across as the landing bases are now under my control. I've a good fighter cap plus several SCTF patrolling.
- With Guam down my TFs are in route for amphibious operations around Rabaul.
- And my preparations are in the prepping phase for the Aleutian Islands.
- In China the 20th Army and 6th Army are taking the high roads for Sian. I've got 4ward air support at bases to help cover my troops and aggress the Chinese Corps I encounter along the way. I'm trying to take out China ASAP.
- Below you can see my operations for Malaya. I'm moving 8 divisions to that theatre.

Paradrop somewhere to keep the units in Malaya from retreating to Singapore. A plus if you can actually capture the base.

Abemama is occupied by Japan.

Mine sweeping continues @ Hong Kong

I've several bombing strikes in China that catch troops out in the open for pretty good damage. I've also been chasing after his Chinese troops as they draw back to his defensive line. I've caught several Chinese Corps and mauled them. Squads equal points and I'll take the points any way I can get them. By air or through ground combat.

KB, near Wake, meets the allied xAKL Dos Hermanos. Nothing much - they both avoid each other - but Bill knows I've got KB up here…

I have a strong SCTF in the Celebes Sea that eats up an AVP. Other than that it looks like most of the merchies around the PI are gone.

Near the West Coast of the US a Japanese sub slaps three fish into the TK Eidsvold. Catching allied tankers and AP is never a bad thing.

In China it looks like Bill is withdrawing troops into wooded areas to create a defensive line. That works for me. I plan to really push hard along the route from Sian to Chungking. Every Chinese division hugging trees is one less that I have to drive through.

Not too much else - troops a moving here and there. I'm landing at Kavieng this turn. Next turn I bombard Wake Isle in preparation of an assault. There are a couple of land battles that'll take place in China and Malaya. Fun-fun-fun. It's good to be Japan in 1941. The 23rd Air Flotilla arrives in Babeldaob. Bettys and torpedoes is a beautiful thing. I just need Bill to provide targets… lol.

Bill does a few night attacks @ Kota Bharu with his bog-boy bombers. @ 6k. 12x500 lbs. Still, he didn't do hardly anything. He's probably doing the same thing I am - attacking easy targets to build up his pilot experience.

I land on Wake but I've again mis-timed my bombardment TF… Sigh. My dive Bombers from KB got their strikes in. There is no air defense at Wake. I went at the AF this turn expecting a fight. The Shock attack hurt. The forts are at level 3. I need some reinforcements… Fortunately I have a pair of INF Regiments @ Truk. The higher fort levels are a "feature" of the Focus mod. I forgot.

Wake Isle is stuck for a few turns while I bring in reinforcements. I'm trying to attrite the allied forces from the air while my landing force digs in to wait. Oh - my bombardment TF arrived - a day late and dollar short. I have to do better at my amphibious coordination.

Anyone wanna share their amphibious procedures? It sounds like I need to get schooled… <grin>

At Sorong Bill sorties a SCTF with a pair of BC. They sink a pair of my DD and send a cargo TF running. I had a pair of BB at Sorong until last turn when I sent them back to Truk for fuel… Bad timing or Bill somehow noticed I'd pulled the SCTF.

More night bombing at Kota Bharu. I have an AA unit there. It doesn't seem to do much…

Moulmein falls.

I para-dropped at Kuching and now have a foot hold there. I think I should have used more transport units. I used a pair and was able to drop about a third of the para-unit.

So for amphibious assaults:

My Bombardments always happen at night. I set my recon to night ops and recon the base to improve accuracy. How far out should I be from the target base when I make my run?

In my Amphibious force I normally use a couple of BB and CA to soak up combat VS the shore batteries. I remember Nemo doing amphibious landings with a zillion ships so the entire unit was unloaded in one turn. So if I want to drop a division and the load factor is - say 15k troops - would I just try to double the capacity of the amphibious TF to - say 30k troops?

6.3.3.3.2.1 OVER THE BEACH
This is for assault unloading over the beach.
»» Beaching Craft. Beaching craft unload completely in one turn.
»» Attack Amphibious Ships. (APA/AKA plus LSD, LSV and British equivalents) in Amphibious TFs, unload at a Rate of 3000 points per ship, per turn.

»» Regular Transport Ships. (Commissioned Naval AP/AK) in Amphibious TFs, unload at a Rate of 600 points per ship per turn.
»» Merchant Ships. (xAP/xAK) in Amphibious TFs, unload at a Rate of 250 points per ship per turn.
»» Special Japanese early war bonus of 1200 for all AP/AK and xAP/xAK types.

How many squads are in 250 points? Is there a way to only load 250 points per ship? Is there an Amphibious Guide that someone has created?

Try this, take the total load and divide it by the unloading rate per day and that should give you the numbers that you need. AMCs and APDs are considered APs if I remember correctly. Don't forget to include some ships with only supply, they can even be the xAKs when the invasion bonus ends so the units landed will have enough supplies immediately.

Consider stopping your bombardment forces at the base as a SCTF first, then switch it to bombard the day of or the day before the invasion. If it is the day before, you can merge it with your invasion force that is also there as long as they are in the same hex then they will soak up shore gun shots. If you have two Bombardment TFs and one can bombard the day before the invasion and then merge, then the second can bombard the day of the invasion. If you use "Remain On Station" you can set them to bombard the second day although it might be very weak.

If you bombard too close, your big guns may not be in there best range for bombardment since you want plunging fire and not flatter direct fire. If that is modeled in the game, that is. Also, at farther ranges some of the defensive guns won't fire back. Even 40mm AA can fire back and those did sink a Japanese xAK in one game. So 15k should be a good range for the battleships, cruisers, and destroyers. It should also keep them from hitting mines which are in the shallower water.

At Kuching Bill slips in a SCTF right after my bombardment TF leaves the area and while my Amphibious TF is trying to unload troops. He caught me with my pants down here and his SCTF made short work of my amphibious TF. And then he bombarded my troops at Kuching. I had to tip my cap to Bill; he did a good job there.

That, in truth, was the big show of the day. In China I'm moving units and harassing the Chinese with my air units and ground units.

And in Burma I'm pushing towards Moulmein. I hit Rangoon with an air strike and I've got recon out. It looks like he is not making much of a defense at the river crossings from Moulmein.

At Wake I land additional troops. My Amphibious combat performance so far is kinda sucky.

I do better in the PI. Below are the day's combat logs:

TF245 begins unloading troops @ Wake. There are two other Amphibious TFs in route.

I also do an amphibious invasion of Jesselton with a pair of Naval Guard units being dropped off. They will DATK in the 28th.

Near Pegu, Burma, the RTA 2nd Div. awaits additional troops that are marching for Rangoon.

At Yenan Bill moves more troops into the base. A Mouse-over shows 10 LCU. I'm attacking heavily by air but I think I'll hold my ground attack for a bit. My stack has four divisions but I have to cross the river into a base that is probably level 4 with a lot of enemy LCU…

In the PI @ San Fernando I will pause the attacks while awaiting additional units to support my combat operations.

Below are the combat logs.

In the PI I'm moving a few divisions up to take on Clark. I'm about 5 days from getting everything in place.

In China I'm still gathering divisions to push for Sian. I think Bill is still in the dark as to the gathering storm I have gathering in that section of China.

I'm also hitting those units at Yenan. The base has 10 enemy ground units and no air CAP. My bombers are making milk runs. Their stats are going up fast. :-)

For Burma I'm hitting Pegu pretty hard now as my units move up so I can engage that base. I'm probably a week from getting enough troops to cross the river and hit Pegu.

At Truk I'm getting my Naval Air Support ready to backstop operations at Rabaul. 12 days and my carriers should be ready to kick tail and take names.

Truk has 3 regiments planning for Rabaul and I have a TF from Japan in route with four air-support engineer units.

The big news for me today is that Wake falls. I really enjoy hearing the sweet voice of Orphan Ann as she works that radio.

My DD find the Ss Triton near Wake and give her a good thrashing. 5 hits, two that showed as legitimate. Tracker says she's sunk but I choose to disbelieve.

If you have paratroopers at Chiang Mai, Prome and Tougoo (sp?) are nice targets which, if you have both of them, also cut the Burma Road.

Nice thought.

Two of my three para-units are already in play @ Kuching, Borneo. The third para unit is in route to Borneo.

I get a Fast Transport in to Kuching with the 1st Raiding Div. I'll attack next turn.

More infantry divisions are arriving in the PI and Malaya. Things promise to get interesting in January. I had a small hick-up with bombers out of Kota Bharu going against Singapore. I had my range too high on some of the LB units… I hate it when I do that to myself. Also of note is that a *lot* of new engineer units arrive on the board. That's good as I'm really trying to ramp up air production. So far Bill has been loath to really use his air assets. That's good for me. I'm loading the dice for air operations in Malaya, the PI, and Borneo. Miri now has a HQa on base. Torpedoes and Bettys from Miri should be a beautiful thing. :-)

A taste of things to come…

At Wake Isle I get another piece of the SS Triton. Still no glug-glug sounds but this is twice in as many turns that I've scored good hits on her. She at least knows she's been kissed. :-)

Last turn Bettys flying from Miri tapped the CL De Ruyter. Bettys and an HQa @ Miri are a sweet combination - just saying. Anyway, the I-164 finds the CL limping to port for repairs and gives her another fish.

I swept Sian but either no one is home or Bill has his AC grounded. I've got a lot of divisions marching in. This should be some serious kick-butt when my troops come marching in.

Happy New Year!

I bumped up production of the Oscar-Id today, shooting for 120 AC per month.

I've moved transports to Hankow to help supplement Ichang. Ground troops deserve good air support - right?

Transport shipping is in route to Hong Kong to grab the 38th Div. for deployment in Malaya.

The 7th Div. arrived @ Bangkok last turn. It's now in route to Malaya via train.

The whole Korea Army is in China now and headed for Siam.

At Pegu, Burma, it looks like Bill is trying to pull his troops back. My bombers are pounding them! I'm still another 3 or so days off from having enough troops to cross the river VS three enemy LCU but if he pulls them back from Pegu then I'm gunna try to dash the 2nd RTA across the river. Yeah - I know - dash and Thai troops aren't normally used in the same sentence, but you know what I mean.

At Soc Trang I pummel another Ductch sub, the SS KXIII

ASW attack near Soc Trang at 59,74

Bill has retreated from Wuchow and the base flipped. I lost a victory point. Bummer. I'm sending the 69th Inf. Bde from Canton to garrison the base.

My gaggle of 3 divisions plus arty and engineers are 1 mile out from Kwangchowan…

My invasion force arrived @ Groot Natoena. I plan to build that up and fly from there and Singkawang (troops in route as I type to capture that base).

In Malaya Bill has also pulled back from Temuloh. I have a pair of divisions there with nobody to spank…

TF47 is in the S. China sea loaded with the 98th Division. Destination: Kota Bharu.

The 4th and 6th Guards divisions have just arrived @ Phnom Penh and are packing to use the rail system. I'll send them to Temuloh. :-)

In the PI the 44th Div has finished unloading @ Aparri and is moving to join the 7th Division as they make their way to Bayombong.

Also @ Aparri is the 65th Division, which is moving to San Fernando.

Unloading @ Aparri is the 54th Division, which will follow the 44th to Bayombong.

At San Fernando I've got the bulk of the units required to reform the 48th Division. I'm just waiting for two more units to march their happy little tails up from Laoag…

In route to Brunei, Borneo, from Cam Ranh Bay is a Fast Transport TF loaded with the I/8st SNLF.

Guess what I found out? Prince Rupert expands airfield to size 3. Always good to know, I guess.

A great place to capture if non-freed up American units aren't allowed into Canada. Conquer Canada and bomb the industries and resources in the Pacific Northwest. Very useful if all of the already freed units went to SOPAC and SWPAC . . .

Near Cooktown the I-17 finds an enemy TF consisting of a pair of xAKL escorted by an AM. The xAKL Kindar takes a torpedo. Sonar reports sounds of "people in the water."

Bill gets even when his SS Pickerel puts a fish in the good ship PB Wa 3. The PB Fuji Maru #3 pummels the Pickerel for the attack with 5 hits reported from the insuring ASW attack.

At Pegu, the push is on. 4 divisions in Combat mode so it'll be a day or three before they cross the river and force a shock attack. To that end I've increased the bomber groups attacking the allied defenders of Pegu.

I'm pounding Yenan's ground troops and AF. This will be ongoing. Bill has 10 LCU there with no air cover. Think fish in barrels. In truth Pegu is the same way but there are only two enemy LCU there.

Groot Natoena is occupied by Japan.

My youngest daughter and our two grandchildren have been staying with us for the last four years while she worked to start over.  Three years of college and part-time jobs; now she has an AS and a couple of certs and a good full-time real job.

I've been helping her move into her new apartment this week.  It's a good thing - I know - but I'm a little moody.  My wife thinks its funny - empty nest syndrome - she calls it.

Whatever.  They're only five minutes away so it's not like I wont see them much but…

It is a good thing.

And the war wages on. I just sent another turn to Bill and I have a turn from Joe in my queue so…

Task forces break off...

Meanwhile I sent a bombardment TF to Sambas to soften up Bills troops. It was like two tasks forces that slipped past in the night.

I ran a fast transport to Brunei to add troops to my invasion.

In China I'm bombing and chasing Chinese troops to Sian. What's weird is still no air conflict over Chungking or Sian on his part. I'm just a sweeping and a bombing those bases…

At Brunei I knock the forts down to zero - which is a good number when I'm trying to take a base.
