Or aviation support squads. Plus supplies, of course.

They don't need a port to fly LRCAP as Ndeni is still port size 0.
I thought that LRCAP was an "offensive" mission like sweeps so I didn't expect the Rufes to fly that mission.

There aren't enough float fighters to change the outcome of the war, but group them with a JNAF Coy and some Mavis transports and you have a mobile force that can fly into a dot hex and operate CAP or LRCAP from islands or atolls on the edge of the empire.

If I can reinforce and resupply Luganville then I will test if the Rufes can fly sweeps from dot hexes too.

The port does not have to be built, just water to land on.

I wouldn't necessarily wait overlong.
they just lost 55 squads, that's about 75 on their adjusted defense for sure, probably over 100 as their disablements likely won't recover as fast as yours.
Point being: you are wearing them down fast and not suffering bad losses. You can keep it up.
IJ is time critical while they have the initiative. You need to press them to keep them off balance, try to get them to commit forces they wanted to harbor, gather fuel/supply that they carelessly left for you, etc. etc. etc. (thnk Yul here. )

Ground combat at 81,40 (near Tienshui)
Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 31632 troops, 396 guns, 385 vehicles, Assault Value = 1059
Defending force 20217 troops, 225 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 606
Japanese adjusted assault: 360 – that’s the worst die roll yet in this hex, so I will pause this for a while as it’s not essential to punch through here. I might try again when I get both 35th and 110th Divs here, but that is weeks away.
Allied adjusted defense: 907
Allied ground losses:
629 casualties reported
Squads: 55 destroyed, 31 disabled

I wouldn't necessarily wait overlong.
they just lost 55 squads, that's about 75 on their adjusted defense for sure, probably over 100 as their disablements likely won't recover as fast as yours.
Point being: you are wearing them down fast and not suffering bad losses. You can keep it up.
IJ is time critical while they have the initiative. You need to press them to keep them off balance, try to get them to commit forces they wanted to harbor, gather fuel/supply that they carelessly left for you, etc. etc. etc. (thnk Yul here. )

I compared raw AV today and Chinese AV only dropped about 40 while IJA dropped about 100 from this battle, offset by +150 from 35th/A RCT arriving.
I always assume that most of the destroyed squads were already disabled so not counted in the AV anyway, which seems about right here.
One other thing I just noticed is that the Chinese don’t have fatigue or disruption (-), so I will divert a Sally unit to bomb them and that might make all the difference to the next attack.
That’s all convinced me to attack again as soon as IJA disruption and fatigue is in single digits.

This summary of the changing raw and adjusted AV shows that allied raw AV is dropping fairly quickly, so it should just be a matter of time until a good die roll results in a 2:1 adjusted AV. The destroyed Chinese squads in the last deliberate attack was the biggest number of destroyed squads yet, so that seems to be another good signal.

Good: Nick makes his debut with 30-40 of them on LRCAP over Imphal, joining every Oscar unit I could set to LRCAP 70%. The Nick/Oscar combo takes big chunks out of the allied bombers that return for a second day in a row. About 20 allied bombers shot down including a few 4Es with lots damaged.

Nice bag!

Fair to say this performance was what I’d hoped for but it still exceeded expectations.
I’ve filled the Nick units with “rookie” fighter pilots that have 50 exp and 70 air skill, with many getting their first kills today and jumping up to +5 experience.
Also critically, only one Nick pilot was WIA.

1st Sentai flying Oscars took a bit of punishment with about 60% of planes now lightly damaged and out of the fight tomorrow while being repaired, but minimal losses in planes or pilots.

The challenge for both opposing air forces now is to see who will be better at getting planes back in the air.
I feel I can easily out produce the allies with Nicks and Oscars but need to manage fatigue levels.
I will also “graduate” a few more pilots out of their advanced training units in China.

This is just the start of a long battle for air superiority over the region, but if the allies keep sending bombers then I want to keep trying to take points by shooting them down.

Oscars weren’t capable of doing that on their own, but more Nick units are coming and Tojo is only about 2 weeks away from entering production.
My hope for Tojo is that with good pilots it will be able to counter the P38s that have just appeared.

Especially true when they're going up against bombers, which will also take longer to repair. Not to mention 4E's give you two points as well.

On the defense, if their number are good, equal or slightly above. Of course that might be me comparing the later Tojo, the one with four HMG's and armor. Didn't use or produce the first one much. Didn't produce the second at all.

Here's the worm as at 1 Jun 42.
Victory Point ratio went from 2.96 last month to 2.99 today, reflecting the impact of the allies digging in all over the map.
I am remaining in contact everywhere but am trying to mass enough force before attacking so that I don't waste troops, especially trying to attack fortified allied defensive positions in rough terrain.

Around the grounds:

GDA: I still have 5 x Infantry Groups to buy out of Japan and send south, awaiting PP to build up so I can free them.

Kwantung Army: Garrison sits at 8163/8000 with 90th Infantry Regt rebuilding (+60 AV to come) and the 8th Garrison Unit filling out (+20 AV to come). Otherwise the garrison will remain stable now until 5 Dec 43 when 4th Garrison Unit withdraws taking 120 AV with it.

CEA: the main IJA advance remains the southern approach to Chungking, with a supporting attack from NCAA on the northern axis. The Yunnan Mountains are nearly clear with only Paoshan left to capture. Once 23rd Army links up with Burma Area Army, it will change direction back towards Chengtu/Chungking. I have spotted a number of Chinese units fleeing into the mountains west of the Chungking plain, so they are either trying to get to India over the slow road or they are trying to establish a block position on 23rd Army's approach.

Burma Area Army: Stalemate at the moment. I need to establish air superiority and work on bombing the allied ground defences before trying to attack here, or I will just do what the IJA did historically.

Southern Area Fleet & 16th Army (NW Aust): 2x Divs are about to enter Katherine from the west. I am going to put an operation together for 4th Div to assault Darwin without KB support to get this moving quicker, as I have Nell/Betty eyes across the whole Nth Aust coast now. I will move 2x BB Divs here to support asap, most likely from SWAF. Perhaps BB Yamato can make her debut.

SW Area Fleet & 14th Army (Solomons): Stalemate here at the moment too, but the combination of Rufe and Zero on CAP seems to have thinned out the allied bombers. They haven't been coming as often or in as many numbers. It might just be bad weather, but it could be a sign that the allies are not going to try and retake Luganville just yet.

4th (aka CenPac Area Fleet): Defensive posture, building forts, naval patrols, sub ops.

NE Area Fleet: I have tenuous footholds after occupying Amchitka and Kiska Islands unopposed, but without any awareness of where the allied CVs are I will need to use KB up here for another few weeks to cover follow up landings. I have limited objectives here, ideally to cut off and destroy the allies at Attu and Adak Islands. If I can take those two islands, I will look for any other easy gains before digging in.

OPERATIONAL REPORT FOR Jun 02, 42
Submarine TF 192 ordered to return to Rabaul due to damage
SS I-29 in ARD Dublon ARD at Truk
E13A1 Jake from Chiyoda-1 attacking SS Tambor at 110,67 SS Tambor is reported HIT – the sub is near Torishima moving west towards my major convoy routes around Formosa. It is 7 hexes away from CS Chiyoda with the Jakes flying naval search 50% random arcs out to range 8. The pilots are in the 50s for experience, 65+ naval search, 56 average ASW skill. They need a bit more ASW skill training but this unit is close to being “set and forget” now.
One other US sub is near it moving east, so this looks like the USN submarine highway to their patrol zones. I have a Jake unit at Yokosuka and another at Chichi-jima, but I might get an AV and a Jake unit to Torishima to really flood this area with search arcs.

I just did a review of aircraft production now that I have 6 months of data on losses.

The air war for the fighters hasn’t been particularly heavy, but CrackSabbath certainly hasn’t done a “Sir Robin”. He has generally contested all airspace but then withdrawn before taking serious losses, so this is probably mid-range losses compared to an allied player at either extreme.

On average, for the planes on this list that have been in action the most, I’ve lost the following to all causes:
• 42 Oscar / month – building 120/month for about net +80/month, with 159 in the pool. 30x Tojo IIa will add to this when they start production within 2 weeks. I might be slightly over-producing Oscars right now, but with the contest ramping up in NE India I won’t dial it back too much. I have 2x30 + 1x60 Oscar factory, so I will just shut down production at 1x30 for now and check again on 1 July.
• 28 Jake / month – still building 180/month for a net +150/month, to fill out all expanded Jake groups and replace all other land based float planes. Only 18 in the pool, as whenever the pool gets to 24+ they are used to upgrade a new FP unit.
• 27 Zero / month – no major carrier battles, otherwise this could have been much higher. I have 2 x 60 factories but only using one to produce at the moment. That’s still net +30/month from now on. Current pool is 161, or 5 months of losses at current rate. I will shut down Zero production but monitor and keep the pool at 100x A6M2 in case there is a big carrier battle. The engines saved will help speed up A6M5 research which is currently 3/43.
• 22 Sally / month – building 45/month with 2 in the pool due to some recent upgrades. I will keep them building at this rate for net +20/month. +30x Helen IIa will join this production in July to start building a reserve pool. I feel that I will need the extras for when I ramp up bombing ops in NE India, so I will keep Sally in production in parallel for a while.
• 13 Kate / month – no major carrier battles. Building 30/month with 99 in the pool. I will try to keep the pool at about 100 so will monitor and may toggle production off in a month or two.
• 12 Nell / month – building 22/month. There are now 147 “obsolete” G3M2 in the pool; plus 22 x G3M3 Nell which is now in production. In addition, I am also building 25 Betty/month with 123 in the pool. New Nell or Betty units won’t arrive until Jul 1943, so I don’t need to keep building this many combined Nell/Betty. I will toggle Betty off for now but will keep building G3M3 due to the extended range to replace the G3M2s on map.
• 9 Topsy / month – I’ve run out of Nak Ha-5 engines now so Topsy production has stopped. There is only 1 left in the pool. All IJA transport units are currently full, but it won’t stay that way unless I keep building something. I will let the Topsy I factories upgrade to Topsy II, with the engine change to Mitsubishi Ha-31. I have 370 of this engine in the pool so it can handle the extra 18/month for Topsy. I’m only building 60x Mit 31 / month for Dinah and future NF Nick-d production, so I will update my engine/aircraft spreadsheet to see if I need to build maybe 10 more Mit 31 per month.
• 9 Val / month – no major carrier battles. Building 30/month with 65 in the pool. Pool target will be 100 before toggling production off. As the D3A2 has less range, is it best to just keep producing D3A1 until Judy arrives?

Feedback on any of the above from the Air Generals and Air Admirals of the IGHQ staff would be appreciated!

I would simply keep producing the first Val.

Have you supersized your Japanese navy air groups? If you do, excellent for more training. To build up experience, bomb Chinese ground units that can't get fighter cover - or leave a Chinese base that has no industry for target practice!

These are the IJN air units that I've resized for use as training units.

I used the damaged CV Hiryu to resize these groups to size 71 previously.
CV Akagi has only just got back to Japan, so I am now using her to increase them to 81.

Limiting factor now is the number of pilots coming out of their 12 month off-map basic training course.

I initially drained the "no name" basic reserve pool filling out all the FP groups that I resized, and as yet I haven't cut short any of the off-map basic training courses.

I also resized 6th KU S-1 to size 81 but not for training. I have split it in thirds for use on 3 x CVEs that take 27 planes each (Taiyo, Unyo just arrived and Chuyo will arrive in Nov 42 unaccelerated).

Using the Akagi, you can supersize to at least 90. You have to manually input the 90.

Here is an industry status report using data from the 1 Jun 42 save.

The summary from this is that I need to start trying to save fuel (by cutting back the IJN's steaming hours) and start trying to save a bit more supply.

I am rationing the export of supply out of the Home Islands, but China and Burma/NE India are still demanding more supply to maintain IJA operations there. The NW Australia operation might need a little more supply, but SEAF and 4th Fleet don't need any more for a little while.

Other than operations, Miri still needs 87k supply, Soerabaja needs 7k and Medan needs 5k before all captured oil wells are repaired.

My vehicle point forecast was out because I didn't factor in all the tank upgrades.
A lot of these vehicle points will be spent soon when the tank units arrive to form the 1st and 2nd Tank Divisions. My pre-war forecast suggests that they need about a 20k vehicle points, so I should have enough for them to arrive fully equipped.

I'm going to dial back some more aircraft production, so that will help the Heavy Industry pool continue to grow quicker than the pre-war forecast.

Thanks Joe, I'll do that and top them up with pilots when more finish their basic training over the next few months.

How much more will your oil increase when all repairs are complete? What, if any, effect will that have on your fuel?

99 oil wells left to repair x10 = 990 extra on map liquid oil points / turn when all repaired.
All refineries are operating so the extra oil won’t become extra fuel/day, it will just keep the refineries working for a little bit longer.
The only real way for me to save fuel now is to reduce movement of IJN big ships.
Even if I repaired more refineries, that would just bring forward the date when the Home Islands refineries run out of oil.

Will you be able to provide information on the Recon planes? I am interested in your loss & production rate, something similar to what you did for the other plane types.

There is also something I like to clarify, you mentioned that you are temporarily shuttling your zero production so as to not over-produce. But in another of your screenshot, Ominato Ku S-1 is lacking planes. Should I interpret that it is recently re-sized and the planes are not fully "topped up" yet?
I did a quick analysis before, if one were to supersize IJN squadrons aggressively, it is fairly difficult to fill all squadrons and keep enough planes to re-fill them after a big attack. Eg, 10 x 80 plane sqn make an attack (be it successful or not), it will almost result in needing 800 planes re-fill. What is your opinion on this?

The unit on Akagi lets me set it to resize to 127.
If I try to set it to 128 it reverts to say “resize to fit ship”.
I don’t know of it would actually resize to 127 though.
If it did it would allow about 169 pilots to join the unit!

I really don’t need that many so after all that I think I’ll just leave them at 81 each for now, but if/when I need more training slots I’ll upsize them again later.

Here you go for recon aircraft.

IJA first:

2nd Air Div and CEA Air Div - mostly active recon with 20-30% rest, but no enemy CAP
Ki-15-II Babs: 36 ops losses. No production, 21 in the pool

51st Air DIv - recon training
Ki-46-I Dinah: 1 ops loss. No production, 9 in the pool.

3rd and 5th Air Divs - front line recon against enemy CAP with 20-30% rest
Ki-46-II Dinah: 23 losses, 2x A2A, 21 ops

Total IJA recon aircraft losses = 60, or 10/month.
Production = 20/month with 37 in the pool.

Interestingly, Babs has suffered a higher rate of ops losses than Dinah.
I checked durability ratings, and the ops loss rate is likely due to Babs 22 vs Dinah 32 durability rating.

Looking ahead, 2nd Air Div gets 1x 9 plane recon Chutai in about 40 days then no more IJA recon units until 1944.

IJN recon:

C5M2: 15 losses, 1x A2A, 14x ops = 3/month on average
Two units are on the front line in SEAF while one is training replacement pilots for them back in Japan.

Production was 10/month until recently but I switched it off as I noticed the pool was growing a lot faster than I needed it to, but I didn't check it in this much detail. I still have 38 IJN Babs in the pool, so that’s just over 12 months supply at this loss rate.

Future IJN recon units are also few and far between and most withdraw before the end of the war.
I am planning to build the Judy recon at 10/month when it becomes available, but I haven't yet planned whether to resize up any of the recon groups.

If I do upsize some IJN recon units it will probably just be to size 24 so that they can be supported by a JNAF AFU, and fill in a naval search arc somewhere in between all the Mavis/Emily/Nell/Betty arcs.

I'm increasing the size of those units for training purposes and haven't been filling my training units with full aircraft complements. Once the A6M5 arrives and starts replacing the A6M2 on CVs, those training units could fill themselves out with M2s released from the CVs.

I haven't planned on using resized units for strikes like that as the number of aircraft would be out of balance with available aviation support. I suppose you could use them like that as a "one hit wonder".
It would also be difficult to replace pilot losses on that sort of scale with trained pilots.

True, you may have a difficult time replacing the pilots but think of the defence. Think of how many planes and pilots the Allies will lose - especially the planes since that is even more limiting! Think of sweeping where he invades and knocking his CAP around before your torpedo planes arrive.
