Here's the worm on 1 Aug 43.
Despite the loss of 3x CAs, the VP ratio is all but steady for another month.
There are still five months to go until this ratio would equal victory though, plenty of time for the Allies to try something to turn it around.

Apart from the Allied build up in India, about 30 ships including AKAs have recently been spotted at Townsville along with 80-90k troops.
Will the Allies try again for Port Moresby or maybe Milne Bay shortly?

Once they are all ready at Chittagong the Dinah IIIs will look for a target of opportunity, although the Allies are starting to allocate anti-para garrisons within central India. That was part of the plan though, to get the defenders to spread out and thin out somewhat.

CA Shropshire is reported to have been sunk near Cocanada on Jul 26, 1943 – the post-debacle Betty/Nell strikes claim another victim. This may make the Allies think twice about sending surface forces towards Chittagong again soon, at least without CV air cover. But the fact remains that the IJN are now unable to maintain a surface combat threat in the Bay of Bengal. Merchants are back at Chittagong dropping supply and withdrawing 25th Army units as quickly as possible while they still can, but the Allies could start to assert their dominance in the Bay of Bengal soon. There won’t be anything that HQ SWAF can do except for sending land based naval air strikes to try and counter future Allied operations towards the Arakan coast.
SS Hake is reported to have been sunk near Johnston Island on Aug 02, 1943 – reported sunk again.
xAK Santa Teresa is reported to have been sunk near Pearl Harbor on Aug 02, 1943

A good day for IJN subs today.
Glug glug sounds heard after this.
It looks like the Santa Teresa was carrying a USN VP squadron.

Defending force 6954 troops, 57 guns, 91 vehicles, Assault Value = 87 – the mouse pop up on the map view shows almost double this number. I need to get better at translating the information from the map view as I am generally assuming the defending stacks are larger than they really are.

All three of these US Army Divisions have been spotted before, but there are more US Army symbols spotted nearby. The Calcutta defenders may be all British Indian Army.
An alternative to trying to attack this hex would be to leave about 2000 AV here to guard it and send the other 1500 AV to attack a different nearby base. Or start to withdraw towards Dacca and let the Allies try to advance across the open terrain.

21st Mdm FA Bn destroyed by counter battery fire…
There might be too many defenders here to capture Asansol against the sort of firepower that the US Army and 9th Aus Div would have by now.
IGHQ will have to ponder this some more.
I might threaten to surround it by moving to flip hexsides and see if the Allies blink first and withdraw.

Yeah, that looks to be a tough nut to crack, especially if his fort numbers are up.

Aircraft Ki-45 KAId Nick advances R&D – to 3/44 +2/day from 1x30 factory with engine bonus. 50 days to advance one month, so should start production on 1 Jan 44.
Aircraft B6N2a Jill advances R&D – to 4/44 +4/day from 4x30 factories. No engine bonus on the Mitsubishi Ha-32 as there are only about 460 in the pool. Sally IIb production will soon shift to Peggy which will free up some engines. Frances bomber and NF versions also use this engine and are also being researched.
Ace pilot Hida B. of 11th Sentai is promoted to 2LT
E Wakamiya arrives at Tokyo

Sambalpur is not on a railway line so no aircraft will fly in there, but the IJA flag might make the Allies nervous.
If the 1st Raiders move one hex NE they will be able to cut the railway line which will leave only the Calcutta-Cuttack-Vizagapatnam railway as the only railway withdrawal route out of Calcutta.
Based on previous Allied tactics they will most likely hold their ground.
I doubt this will spark a major withdrawal from the Calcutta area, but it might cause a minor reorganisation.

Nice progress in India Jdsrae, especially given it is late 1943. I'm curious, how have you dealt with the allied 4E threat in the open? Did your opponent bring many heavy bombers to the subcontinent?

There are a fair few USAAF 4E bombers in India with the usual RAF heavies.

They did flatten a few airfields in Burma early on when they first arrived. The counter then was to have one each of AA Regt/Bn/Coy at the larger bases, plus the rare IJAAF radars in the Base Forces. Nick-A was used as the bomber interceptor as Oscars were too flimsy. The Nicks weren't great, but they must have done enough damage as the Allies soon turned to night bombing.

The pre-war plan was to convert nearly every IJAAF light bomber unit to fighter bombers and give them Nicks. Lots of Nick-A were available to use as an emergency night fighter force. Again they weren't great in that role, with multiple shot down each night, but they must have done enough to make the Allies give up on night bombing. The Allies still try it every now and then, but Nick-C with cannons is now the main FB.

More recently the Allies have been trying to bomb the IJA stacks in the open. My counter is to set large LRCAP with range 0 using Franks and Tojos. I just have to guess what the main couple of targets are and try to put enough fighters over one or two hexes each day. There are also some AA Regts with radar being used to help protect the stacks in the open. Franks still get driven off by defensive fire a lot, but the Frank/Tojo combo is doing fairly well even when outnumbered.

It's a battle of attrition, but so far aircraft production is just keeping up with losses and the IJAAF pilot quality is still fairly high. All frontline fighter pilots are still at least 70+ experience and air skill. I have lost a few 15+ kill aces recently though, but I think that is the sort of price that has to be paid.

When the heavies do get through the LRCAP to bomb a target in the open they don't seem to do much damage.
The most I've seen is a few hundred casualties but most of the casualties seem to have recovered by the next day.
The ground forces have dug in to at least level 2 field forts by now, so I assume that is helping to keep their casualties down.

The plan from here is to capture Cawnpore then prepare to withdraw towards the Dacca-Darjeeling line.

Interesting and good to see that they are not always as devastating as I feared.

A few interesting things spotted on the North Queensland coast.
1. Troops spotted moving inland from Cairns
2. Troops moving from Townsville towards Cairns
3. 4x AO spotted at Townsville with a growing number of combat ships disbanded in port
With DDs and AOs here there is a high chance of CV/BB/CA nearby.

Seems like a mistake to park a bunch of warships in a place you can observe them.....you are right to keep an eye on that!
