A rare Joint Directive has been agreed and issued to clarify priorities for mission profiles, aircrew training and aircraft production between the IJAAF and IJNAF.
In summary, the IJNAF will cease training for and conducting bombing of ground targets. This will simplify and shorten the training cycle for navy strike pilots by removing GrdB from their training curriculum.
Tentative pre-war plans have been confirmed that the IJAAF will not train in NavT or NavB skills, to concentrate on GrdB and ASW skills/missions.
Both air forces will undertake separate independent studies into the costs : benefits of LowN training and missions, with an initial focus on FB and LB aircraft.

A few thoughts from me:

- If you're planning to use the Peggy T (and you should be!), then NavB should absolutely be on the agenda for the IJA. You can't train NavT for IJA pilots until the Peggy T arrives, but you can fix that quickly enough if everything is in place.

- NavB for the IJN is also useful if you're planning to use the Lily dive bomber. Forum opinion is divided on that plane, but I'm sold on it.

- I've found that ASW trained pilots tend to stick around, provided you use them in dedicated ASW squadrons and not on frontline roles.

- Big proponent of LowNav training here. I work it in to my IJA and IJN fighter training programmes, mainly to get Defence and EXP up, but also because it's the most useful skill to train given the big VP return on ships and all the annoying light surface combatant ships the Allies get (plus, strafe and ground bombing is useless on fighters).

- More pilots isn't always better. Worth considering if you want to keep longer training programmes that result in better pilots. There's a vast gulf in combat effectiveness between a 50 EXP pilot and a 60 EXP pilot, and there's much to be said for aiming to produce 60 EXP pilots from training alone...

I don't disagree with anything here, just that I have made a few different decisions in terms of aircraft that I am going to stick with as I don't think they will change the eventual outcome of the war anyway.

I took this photo at the Australian War Memorial about 6 months ago as I found the flow and durations interesting and quite close to the way this game models skill development. It's a tad blurry in parts but should still be readable. One of my grandpas went through this flowchart on his way to join 51 Sqn RAF in England. He left Aust May 43 and flew his first operational mission on 17 Jun 44. He was "screened" (finished tour) 8 Feb 45. His diary says: "Unexpected but quite acceptable as we've been nearly nine months on squadron".

I didn't get a turn back this evening so took a bit of time to update a previous pilot training flow chart to look a bit like this one. I'll post it shortly after I've checked it for obvious errors.

All of that training an then still going to a Operational Training Unit.

All of the training on the RAAF EATS chart probably represents the in-game 12 months off map training that puts raw recruit pilots into the general reserve with ~30 experience.
I just checked some dates from his diary and there was about 12 months between his date of embarkation in mid-1943 until he flew his first op in mid-1944. About 3 months of that was travel by ship and train (Sydney-SF-NY-Glasgow) leaving about another 9 months of various training in OTUs.
That could have been like the 9-12 months of on-map training needed in the game to train a crew up to something like 50 exp, 70 in skills.

This is the updated pilot training plan for IJNAF pilots.
With quite a few Glen subs sunk recently those Glen units can be bought back and resized.
The next step is to rebalance how many units are used for each of the training schools and the proportion between OTU and front line units.

This is the IJAAF pilot training plan.
I've seen similar charts from others including the estimated time to get pilots through each course.
I've not been paying close enough attention to individual pilots to confirm, but each course does seem to take about 3 months with the later skills taking slightly longer than each previous one.

I think you can drop the strafe element from both your IJA and IJN fighter components. It's never been a skill I've valued highly, and the IJ don't get the aircraft to really take advantage of the attack bomber/fighter bomber code in an effective way.

Much better to just focus on the LowNav skill to get bombs on target, as that's where the damage will come from.

This is the VP worm for 1 Nov 43.
The game date is now 12 Nov 43 and it is still close to this, but if the Allies can somehow find about 2000 points before 1 Jan 44 they still have a chance to stave off auto-surrender.

The VP ratio line shows that the red team has taken its foot off the gas in the last couple of months.

At the tactical level it is very tempting to allow ADM Yamamoto to move the Combined Fleet forward to contest the next landing in the Marshalls (or wherever it will come) but at the strategic level the best thing to do is to keep everyone on a tight leash and reduce the point scoring opportunities for the Allies.

IIRC, two. All other aircraft are worth one.

Thanks, the manual says 2 for HBs, 1 for all other aircraft.
Finally had a chance to check.

RADM Tanaka returns to HQ 1st Naval District at Yokosuka after nearly two years away from Japan, to allow the Myoko Class Cruisers to upgrade.
The crews are given an initial 30 days leave, but that will be extended by a few weeks as the escorting Kageros have a 21 days upgrade that will start 1 Dec 43.
In addition to CruDiv3, RADM Tanaka is simultaneously commander of the 13th Base Force at Iwo Jima, but he isn’t in a hurry to step ashore to take over that job.

MTB G-156 arrives at Hiroshima/Kure – MTB Division 15 is starting to form up with all 15# boats to join it. I expect it will be faster to return them all to the pool then pay supply to make them reappear somewhere in the Pacific where they might be put to some sort of use. I will return them to the pool when all of G-150 to 159 are on the map then try to make them reappear at Truk or Manus, to deploy in short hops forward from there.
MTB G-10 arrives at Yokohama/Yokosuka – The first boat of MTB Division 1. It has a larger displacement and slightly longer legs than the G-15# class.
Aoba-1 arrives at Tokyo – bought back. As a previous CA float plane det it will resize to 24 on one of the converting BBs at Kure, then receive 50+ experience pilots with decent naval search and ASW skills. Next war I will resize FP units to size 27 so that they have the standard 3x flights of 9 aircraft each. As Commander 2nd Fleet was careless enough to allow all of CA Furutaka, Kako, Aoba and Kinugasa to be sunk, the float plane dets of each will return to SWAF to bolster naval search and ASW patrols along the Burma coast.
Wotje Base Force arrives at Tokyo – will fill out and move forward to a small base in the Marianas like Pagan.
