Mine Tarawa and see if that helps along with an ASW TF set to coastal only..

I never had a problem with Fast Transport TFs.

If he is parking subs in a port, then it is time to visit with aircraft - even at night if you have to. Fly in at 1k feet with the load set to "Torpedo" and the Bettys/Nells will carry the full bomb load. Put some mines there as well.

That sub should be hiding, returning to base, or sunk!

They will. I've had a lot of these over the years. Cannot explain them in terms of understanding what causes it, but they do happen. They will collapse, and your troops will end up with silly exp from it. But the grind day after day .... yeah, not a lot of fun for either side actually.

Poona took three months and in the end the enemy will have lost 2000av, guess around 100,000 troops, some two dozen units. The pocket near Jessore is even worse, losing over 500,000 troops in total during the Calcutta operation, some 150 units. Especially the Calcutta operation is still absolutely amazing me, it results in a total Allied disaster because an Army three times as big as the one invading Normandy couldn't break through at Calcutta, urban hex, lvl. 9 forts and only a couple of IJA divisions plus support. When they reached level 6 forts it was game over for them and with super KB (1300 carrier based ac at that time IIRC) operating in the Indian Ocean the enemy had no chance to supply his troops or evacuate them.

Points for ground losses at the moment are over 43,000 already and I think we will have total superiority on the ground after clearing the pockets in India. No idea how the Allied should ever take any bigger islands when I have 10,000 av in reserve to react. Until the Soviets activate we can oppose any Allied land Army anywhere on the map.

Of course, you probably could take out the Soviets after India is cleared.

Just keep the Allies out of 4E range of the Home Islands.

To be honest, I was even thinking of this. A success there too would be crazy, I could muster some 20,000 av for the attack. But a defeat, a stall or a prolonged battle starting in early 45 with over a thousand available 4Es next to Japan really make me think twice about it. Taking out the Soviets would be winning the war and I'm not talking about winning on points as autovictory kicked in already but making it impossible for the Allied to advance due to the sheer number of Japanese troops available for the defense.

What will keep me from attacking is the fact that literally every base that has some Soviet troops must be at level 9 forts and we all saw what level 9 forts plus good terrain can do to an Army one would think it would be unstoppable -> Calcutta...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack near Terempa at 54,85

Japanese Ships
DD Hatakaze
E Aguni

Allied Ships
SS Scabbardfish, hits 14, heavy damage

took weeks to see my ASW TF East of Singapore finally attacking that sub which was spotted by my air ASW daily in shallow waters... super E Aguni did a great job scoring no less than five direct hits, the sub is sunk for sure... the IJN is of course still vulnerable in deep water hexes but as soon as the subs go into our sea lanes in shallow waters we can sure hurt them...

SS Scabbardfish is sighted by escort
DD Hatakaze fails to find sub, continues to search...
E Aguni fails to find sub, continues to search...
DD Hatakaze fails to find sub and abandons search
E Aguni fails to find sub, continues to search...
E Aguni attacking submerged sub ....
Debris floats to surface in area of attack!
Escort abandons search for sub

and here's the first real hammer when it comes to surrendering units at Poona... the enemy has no combat power left and we see huge contingents of enemy troops surrendering today... that was worth like 800 victory points... only three worn down divisions remain in the pocket which will be undoubtedly destroyed soon...

how the enemy artillery can do that kind of losses within our lines is a mystery only the designers know... after being cut off for like six months, having lost 200,000 troops to starvation and our aerial bombings and with laughable 78 guns left the enemy does nukes every turn... this is NOT FOW, my units really get disablements in the dozens each turn lately...

with the Poona pocket being cleared within the next days we ordered para drops on the bases South of Poona, we're trying to seize the rail junctions in Western India... no doubt this will create enemy reactions, the paras will be sure nuked from the air but if we can take the rail junctions the enemy has to march in which takes time...

Yes, we are playing until the bitter end (for Japan), achieved autovictory with something like 6.5:1 at the beginning of 43, mainly due to the Allied loss of China, India and a carrier engagement in 42.

Don't forget that's mostly due to the insane losses of Allied ground troops the years before. At some point Japanese domination on the ground just became like an avalanche. Comparable to the usual Allied buildup against Japan but in this case, the Allied built up, had to do something and we could use the hammer again and again. Fail just once (like we could during the Allied operation against Calcutta) and the situation would look completely different as I would have had 6,000 av literally cut off in India.

Units destroyed 1

THE END... 5th Indian Div was the last unit to fight in the Poona pocket and is finally destroyed after like three months of constant fighting... thinking about it it again feels like totally insane as we probably attacked over a dozen times with at times crazy odds but cut off units just don't surrender while it would have taken only one or perhaps two attacks to see the enemy surrendering with all troops had they been in an Allied base... anyways, this is yet another big victory in India as it robs the Allied of another 2,000+ av with several divs/bgds destroyed and no chance to rebuild them due to the limited squad replacements and the horrendous losses in the past...

with the pocket at Jessore where we have trapped 150+ enemy units (now down to 32 units) the enemy will lose 600,000 troops, roughly 15,000av in India in 44... China is in 9 out of 10 times a cakewalk, no matter what the Allied player was trying but never achieved anything like this in India before while I was able to take India several times already... as mentioned earlier this will give us such an advantage in troop strenght I have no clue how the Allied could do any protracted ground offensives, other than island hopping and even then, if they get stalled on an island and we have the chance to reinforce we would have the tools to destroy the Allied invasion...

here's the victory points' screen, showing the development of the last seven weeks with Allied ground losses going up from around 38,000 to 44,000 which means the destruction of the Poona pocket nets probably 4,000 points (estimate 2,000 points due to starvation at Jessore)... we lost something like 250 points at Poona as we mostly suffered disablements (tank rgts were hit hard though with three outright destroyed in a single attack) so that makes it a 8:1 in victory points at Poona... the victory at Poona didn't come cheap though as we suffered thousands and thousands of disabled squads so several convoys full of supplies were spent just to get the disabled squads back into action...

victory points aside as they don't count at all anymore anyways , the loss of all these troops most likely means the Western flank is more or less safe for the rest of the war as the Allied just won't have the troops to take India/Burma or threaten the SRA out of Ceylon... another big operation in the West would most likely end in another fiasco because a) that front is fully built up and b) we could react with our reserves as we did around Calcutta already...

1.5 years after achieving autovictory we have pushed the point ratio up to 6.4:1 again... one goal is to push the victory points above 100,000 now...

Submarine attack near Port Swettenham at 48,80

Japanese Ships
DD Oite
E Aguni
E Kurahashi

Allied Ships
SS Hake, hits 16, and is sunk

Hake ran onto a mine at Singapore yesterday and was heading back into the Malacca straits to get back to Ceylon when one of our ASW groups "finds" the sub... well, it was Hake find our ASW group firing four torps at DD Oite... pity that the routine lets heavily damaged subs submerge, no matter how many holes they got in their hulls and no matter how big the holes are... several direct hits forced the sub to surface and the bugger was sunk... E Aguni is a killer E with an ASW rating of 10 with lots and lots of Type 2 DCs...

SS Hake launches 4 torpedoes at DD Oite
Hake bottoming out ....
DD Oite fails to find sub, continues to search...
E Aguni fails to find sub and abandons search

that's an interesting development in Western India as the enemy has sent two motorized units to Bellary which is one of the important rail junctions our paras took a couple of days ago... while the enemy units were moving into the hex coming from a secondary road we had our Army moving in from Poona to operate further South and needless to say the enemy has no chance and suffers during the retreat...

not much fighting going on today but East of the Marshalls we picked up enemy carriers again heading West... pretty sure they are heading directly towards Maloelap with a convoy to pick up the stranded US Inf Divs that failed to take the atoll... we've got a small convoy in the area unloading at Mili, not sure it would be valuable enough to see the enemy carriers even launching a strike against it but we've moved in the three Frank units we have in the Marshalls for a warm welcome of the USN flyboys...

TF 104 encounters mine field at Maloelap (136,117)

Allied Ships
LCI-776, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Allied ground losses:
Guns lost 1 (1 destroyed, 0 disabled)

lots of action this turn, actually more than expected... we start off with a troop loaden LCI at Maloelap hitting a mine (and sinking)... troops aboard that LCI? Means my assumption that the enemy is going to evacuate the US Army troops from Maloelap's beaches was wrong...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on TF, near Mili at 136,121

Weather in hex: Moderate rain

Raid detected at 80 NM, estimated altitude 13,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 34 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-84a Frank x 129

Allied aircraft
FM-2 Wildcat x 24
F4U-1A Corsair x 30
F6F-3 Hellcat x 176
F6F-5 Hellcat x 21
SB2C-3 Helldiver x 25

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-84a Frank: 2 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
FM-2 Wildcat: 2 destroyed
F4U-1A Corsair: 1 destroyed
F6F-3 Hellcat: 13 destroyed
F6F-5 Hellcat: 3 destroyed
SB2C-3 Helldiver: 13 destroyed

Japanese Ships
xAKL P-105, Bomb hits 1, and is sunk
xAKL P-46
xAKL P-75

as the carriers take position one hex East of Maloelap they spot my small supply convoy at Mili which was pushing in a day before and stayed under an umbrella of IJNAF fighters that totally mauled the incoming carrier strike... total air losses later, it was yet another dive (it has been fixed), dive (it has been fixed yet again, dive (it was fixed?) massacre... totally loopsided... ah yeah, these were the same Frank units that lost 1:24 against some helpless Corsairs some time ago...

huge escort that outnumbers our CAP 2:1 for two dozen Helldivers of which 5 get through to bomb a 100 ton capacity xAKL... I'm using these ships like longer ranged barges, they are perfectly suited for operations in dangerous waters when you don't have to move huge supply amounts at once...

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x SB2C-3 Helldiver releasing from 4000'
Naval Attack: 1 x 1000 lb SAP Bomb, 2 x 250 lb SAP Bomb
1 x SB2C-3 Helldiver releasing from 2000'

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Mili at 136,121

Weather in hex: Severe storms

Raid detected at 80 NM, estimated altitude 11,000 feet.

Allied aircraft
FM-2 Wildcat x 5
F4U-1A Corsair x 28

SB2C-3 Helldiver x 5

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
F4U-1A Corsair: 1 destroyed
F6F-3 Hellcat: 8 destroyed
SB2C-3 Helldiver: 1 destroyed

afternoon strike was even worse when it comes down to kill rates as the enemy didn't even manage to damage a single Frank... NONE... 200 escorting fighters for not even halve a dozen bombers and the 200 fighters fail to even damage a single of our 104 Franks on CAP... why? Guess why! Same as in the morning the Franks were set higher than the incoming strike and radar alerting did the rest, it was a never ending dive massacre... the only real difference to the morning strike was the Franks attacking the bombers way earlier and then left the escorts get away as the combat was over with the last Helldiver shot down...

already expected this after seeing a LCI with troops aboard hitting a mine earlier today, the enemy is landing more troops on Maloelap after having three divisions trapped there already... the losses within Japanese lines due to naval gunfire are severe... lots of 15cm hits on enemy shipping but other than bouncing off the ships' armor nothing happened...

we identify another THREE US divs storming ashore at the small atoll... insane, our brave defenders now fight against six enemy divisions plus enemy tanks and heavy artillery... Mundy really wants Maloelap, no doubt... looking at the losses during the landing these troops must have quite a good preparation already which also surprises me as I just can't imagine he would actually prep six divs plus support only for Maloelap...
