AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Feb 28, 42 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Night Time Surface Combat, near Pago Pago at 148,161, Range 11,000 Yards Allied aircraft no flights Allied aircraft losses OS2U-3 Kingfisher: 1 destroyed SOC-1 Seagull: 1 destroyed Japanese Ships BB Kongo BB Haruna BB Hiei BB Kirishima, Shell hits 1 DD Yamakaze, Shell hits 1 DD Hatsushima, Shell hits 1 DD Wakaba DD Yugure Allied Ships BB Nevada, Shell hits 8, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk BB Oklahoma, Shell hits 28, and is sunk CA Pensacola, Shell hits 5, on fire CL St. Louis, Shell hits 3, and is sunk CL Helena, Shell hits 10, and is sunk DD Aylwin, Shell hits 14, and is sunk DD Monaghan for a short moment I was thinking about the possibility of Mundy trying to move his heavily damaged ships out of Pago Pago and the danger the Kongos would meet when going in for a bombardment and it seems I was wrong in thinking Mundy would just keep his ships disbanded in port as this engagement pops up right at the start of the replay... have to admit I wasn't really happy about the engagement as it was putting my ships at risk even though all turned out well... I don't see the Kongos suited for naval battle vs other BBs and this engagement clearly showed why... while their gunfire was well placed non of the 36cm shells could any damage to Nevada or Oklahoma as they just bounced off the US BBs' armor... only when the two TFs were near knife fight range the 36cm shells started penetrating the US BBs' belt armor putting them into sinking condition pretty quickly... Nevada then was hit by 2 torps from the DDs but Oklahoma kept shooting at my whole task force like wild... was glad she couldn't hit anything and finally damage within the US TF was accumulating until all but Pensacola and Monaghan was sunk... that's the difference between the replay and the combat report, the report shows a totally one sided engagement but when you watch the replay and see the US task force firing as many salvoes at the IJN as vice versa then it all just came down to the IJN's better gunnery during the night, otherwhise we would now have several damaged ships far from a friendly base... Pensacola was landing hits on all our BBs and we were lucky she didn't target more of our DDs with here really accurate gunfire... Yugure took one 8 inch shell which was a critical hit and she is now in danger of being sunk, would rate her chances to make it back to a safe port at about 30%... Pensacola should be sunk though as she took several penetrating 36cm shells while Monaghan most likely will survive... wouldn't be happy about losing Yugure but I guess that's an absolutely acceptable price we paid when KB was able to kill two tanker convoys, a troop convoy, xAP Queen Elizabeth, 2 USN BBs, several CA/CL/DD during the sweep through the South Pacific... it's only the end of February and the enemy has lost an insane number of high value ships for literally no gain IMO other than turning his forward bases in POW camps...
