I’m sure there’s a simple answer to this, but I’m unable to divine how to view detection level of a unit, task force, or base. Can someone please help?

If you mouse over the enemy base a popup will come out and just below the base name in the popup is a numeric fraction. Like 9/10. As I understand it, the higher the fraction, the more accurate the info. And the more accurate the bombing runs over the base will be to some extent. Recon missions over an enemy base is invaluable.

For TFs, Naval Search or direct observation by your subs/ships or even land units is needed to raise the D/L. Signals intelligence can also provide a small boost to the D/L.
The D/L is reset to 0 at the end of each turn but there is a "Maximum D/L" figure kept in the background. If the enemy unit is detected again next turn, the MD/L modifies the DL by bumping it a bit higher. If the enemy unit is not detected for several turns, the MD/L goes to 0 as well.

I haven't found any developer input on the amount of info on the number of the D/L and the detail provided at that level, so I go by personal observations.
IME, numbers 0 to about 3 will tell you there is something there, but little additional info.
Numbers 4-7 might identify the type of unit or TF, how many men or ships, and perhaps the direction it was moving when it entered the hex it is currently in.
Numbers above 7 will start to provide ship types and then their names. For a CV TF it might show the number of aircraft or even the breakdown by fighters, bomber types and auxiliaries (float planes).

Detection level is very important for setting up naval battles and carrier clashes. If one side has prior D/L on the enemy before first contact in the turn and the other side does not, the initiative goes to the side with better intel.

Great information. Thanks!

It doesn’t seem that realistic, but is there a way to see your own TF’s likelihood of having been detected, other than the “spotted” message in the mouseover pop up?

I was under the impression that when you hover over your own forces, DL displayed (if any) is the indication of how much your intel division thinks the enemy knows about the unit. Or it is somehow simply mechanically counted upon all the snoopers/bombing/direct contact reports. Not sure 100%, but it's there for friendly units.

He is asking about other methods than the rollover check. DL is the sum of SigInt, sightings, air photos and combats with the enemy unit/TF. The manual specifies which types of aircraft contribute most to raising DL. Being equipped with a camera is important for land recon. You could try to work some of it out yourself from lines in the combat report about enemy aircraft flying over and from combat reports of clashes or encounters. But the Operations Report and Combat Report have FOW in them and you will never by able to get an accurate DL figure for your own forces. Better to just use the rollover that does the work for you.

I think if it's a friendly TF a detection level of 1/1 means they broke radio silence. The enemy may know something's there but not what.
