Anyone know how much the Chinese Sovereign Wealth fund is? About $1T Even if you confiscated every cent it would not come close to the damage done to the world.

The IMF estimates this recession will be the worst recession since 1930

This recession is fundamentally different, at least for the time being. Because it's engineered, not structural.

Aye, OBR predictions over here (ignored by the government over Brexit forecasts btw) are being seized on as "good" because they predict a very rapid bounceback.

Obviously everyone is worried by headlines like "Worse than the great depression" but the lessons learnt (and especially those learnt in the last financial crisis) mean that its going to be bad, but not as bad as feared.

Regarding withdrawal funding for the WHO, that is a decision that should be taken after the crisis is over, rather than during it, as that leaves quite a void in the only global health organisation in the middle of a global pandemic.

Yesterday evening I watched a YouTube how-to video and then cut my own hair, using scissors and comb. A first.

The data is bad. They have nothing for my area for Taiwan and for China but there are lots of people from those places. I do not have numbers.

I agree it's not funny. I hope the man who was eaten, and gave the Alligator the virus, feels the full force of the law upon him soon. He needs to be taught a lesson so he won't do it again

Maybe the gator gave it to him. There is information it can transmitted in stool, like when he was pooped out after being eaten.

No, the coronavirus is not the leading cause of death in the US, CDC says
April 12, 2020

https://www.click2houston.com/news/national/2020/04/12/no-the-coronavirus-is-not-the-leading-cause-of-death-in-the-us-cdc-says/

""There are no data to support that theory," Jeff Lancashire, a spokesperson for the National Center for Health Statistics, said in an email on Friday.

False claims declaring that coronavirus has become the leading cause of death in the US have swirled as the US leads the world in coronavirus cases. Those claims are made by some experts comparing how many people die of coronavirus daily with the estimate of how many people may die daily on average of each leading cause of death, using CDC data."

The common cold is also a viral infection caused by the adenovirus or coronavirus and there are many, many subsets with a lot of variability. That’s why it's said there's no cure for the common cold [and] there's no real vaccine. The flu is known to be from influenza and is preventable with vaccination.

A Federal Ban on Making Lethal Viruses Is Lifted

Dec. 19, 2017

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/19/health/lethal-viruses-nih.html

"Federal officials on Tuesday ended a moratorium imposed three years ago on funding research that alters germs to make them more lethal.

Such work can now proceed, said Dr. Francis S. Collins, the head of the National Institutes of Health, but only if a scientific panel decides that the benefits justify the risks.

Some scientists are eager to pursue these studies because they may show, for example, how a bird flu could mutate to more easily infect humans, or could yield clues to making a better vaccine."

"When the moratorium was imposed, it effectively halted 21 projects, Dr. Collins said. In the three years since, the N.I.H. created exceptions that funded ten of those projects. Five were flu-related, and five concerned the MERS virus.

That virus is a coronavirus carried by camels that has infected about 2,100 people since it was discovered in 2012, and has killed about a third of them, according to the World Health Organization."

#106 – Amesh Adalja, M.D.: Comparing COVID-19 to past pandemics, preparing for the future, and reasons for optimism

quote:

"All of that makes me very optimistic that we will be able to meet the challenge of this virus without putting any of our hospitals into crisis, that this is going to be a severe challenge for this country, but it's not something that that is going to break the country." — Dr. Amesh Adalja, referring to some lesser discussed positive trends

quote:

In this episode, infectious disease and pandemic preparedness expert, Amesh Adalja, M.D., puts the current pandemic into context against previous coronaviruses as well as past influenza pandemics. Amesh also provides his interpretation of the evolving metrics which have contributed to big variations in modeling predictions, whether this will be a seasonally recurring virus, and perhaps most importantly—how we can be better prepared for the inevitable future novel virus. Finally, Amesh explains where he sees positive trends which give him reasons for optimism.

Second Virus Causing Flu-Like Symptoms in Patients: MD
January 31, 2018

https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/second-virus-causing-flu-like-symptoms-in-patients-md/143719/

"The adenovirus looks and feels like the flu but it’s not influenza. Doctors say the symptoms tend to be slightly less severe than influenza, but they can still make you feel like you need to stay home and rest. In some cases, symptoms can include pink eye or gastrointestinal issues."

Next in line a adenovirus?

Coronavirus hoarder tries to return $10,000 worth of goods to Adelaide supermarket
11 hours ago

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-04-15/supermarket-shopper-tries-to-return-coronavirus-hoardings/12149548

"Drakes Supermarkets director John-Paul Drake said the man called the supermarket to try to get a refund on 132 packs of toilet rolls and 150 one-litre bottles of hand sanitiser.

He said the shopper had bought the goods, worth around $10,000, with the help of a "team" of stockpilers when panic buying surged about four weeks ago."

Oil falls below $20 per barrel after agency projects coronavirus will cause record slump in global demand

Apr. 15, 2020

https://markets.businessinsider.com/commodities/news/oil-price-falls-iea-projects-record-slump-global-demand-coronavirus-2020-4-1029094158

"Oil prices slumped Wednesday after the International Energy Agency projected that global demand will fall by a record amount in 2020 amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Global oil demand is expected to drop by 9.3 million barrels per day for the year, according to a Wednesday IEA report. In April, global oil demand is expected to decline by 29 million barrels per day from a year ago, to levels last seen in 1995.

"The impact of containment measures in 187 countries and territories has been to bring mobility almost to a halt," the IEA wrote in the report. "

Jeez. Hasn't been that low in 25 years. A fall in demand is a big factor but the second cause is the deliberate effort by the Saudis to badger the Rooskis into lowering production cooperatively by turning on the spigots.

The good news? The US, under the carbon-friendly leadership of Trump, will meet its CO2 goals for 2020.

The bad news? The IMF is predicting a 25-35% drop in world economic output.

I think there are some key lessons to be learned from this in the economic/climate/international space.

It's been interesting to see how some of Kate Raworth's work is being picked up by organisations looking towards the aftermath of all this. This has been a proof of concept that there can be sufficient action done to make a difference, and I think given the recent economic shocks, I suspect that the status quo that existed before won't satisfy the majority of people.

Mers coronavirus: is this the next pandemic?
15 Mar 2013

https://www.theguardian.com/science/2013/mar/15/coronavirus-next-global-pandemic

"Or so it seemed. Since the virus came to light in September last year, the number of cases has risen to 15. More than half have died. The latest death was a 39-year-old man, reported by Saudi Arabia this week. The numbers are not yet alarming, but the steady appearance of fresh cases, and the fact that the infection has now spread from person to person, has sparked an intensive effort to understand the virus, and quietly prepare for the worst.

“We don’t know whether this virus has the capability to trigger a full epidemic. We are completely in the dark about it,” says Ron Fouchier, a molecular virologist at Erasmus Medical Centre whose lab identified Zaki’s virus. “We think what we are seeing is just the tip of the iceberg, but we don’t know how big the iceberg is, or where the iceberg is.”"

It Begins – East and West Coast Blue States Team Up To Begin Economic Civil War…
April 13, 2020
https://theconservativetreehouse.com/2020/04/13/it-begins-east-and-west-coast-blue-states-team-up-to-begin-economic-civil-war/

"t seemed clear several weeks ago this was going to happen. East coast blue state governors and West coast blue state governors are uniting to begin the economic civil war planning to block any White House effort to re-open the U.S. economy. The founders planned for this in Article I, Sec 10 (paragraph 3):

“No state shall, without the consent of Congress, … enter into any agreement or compact with another state”.."

"EAST COAST — Six Northeast governors will form a working group to come up with a plan to restart [control] the regional economy, they announced on Monday."

"WEST COAST – The governors of Washington, California and Oregon on Monday announced they were working on a joint plan for reopening [controlling] their states’ respective economies once it is safe to lift coronavirus-related restrictions."

‘Operation Gridlock’ protest of Gov. Whitmer stay-home order jams Lansing
April 15, 2020

https://www.bridgemi.com/michigan-government/operation-gridlock-protest-gov-whitmer-stay-home-order-jams-lansing

"LANSING — A parade of cars clogged streets around the Michigan Capitol Wednesday, honking horns and sporting handmade signs with slogans like “tyranny worse than the virus” and “honk if you love liberty.”

They were joined by at least 200 others who walked around the Capitol grounds on foot — few wearing protective face masks, many waving Trump flags and some toting rifles — breaking the social distancing guidelines recommended to limit the spread of the coronavirus, despite organizers warning against it.

The group, organized by the activist group the Michigan Conservative Coalition, protested the expanded stay-home order issued last week by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. The order extends the restrictions first put into place on March 24, but adds restrictions to some stores, bars travel between homes and forbids the use of motorized boats."

Liquor, lotto tickets still flowing
April 10, 2020

https://www.bridgemi.com/michigan-government/what-michigans-new-coronavirus-stay-home-executive-order-means

Whitmer’s order maintains the status quo for liquor stores, which are allowed to remain open so long as they also sell “groceries, medical supplies” or other products like toilet paper needed to maintain the “sanitation” of residences.

And the new order says nothing about in-person lottery sales despite calls to end those transactions by state Rep. Mari Manoogian, D-Birmingham, and the Chaldean Chamber of Commerce.

Whitmer spokeswoman Tiffany Brown said lottery sales are still allowed in Michigan but said people are urged “to take every precaution” and “only purchase lottery tickets if already at a store purchasing food, fuel, or other necessary items.”

Border Checkpoints Discourage Travelers Between States
April 8, 2020

https://www.pewtrusts.org/en/research-and-analysis/blogs/stateline/2020/04/08/border-checkpoints-discourage-travelers-between-states

"Texas, Delaware, Florida and Rhode Island are stopping drivers with out-of-state license plates and ordering them to quarantine for two weeks, if they intend to stay in the state. Those entering the state for “essential” business reasons, such as commercial traffic, appear to be exempt.

Constitutionally, states cannot prohibit residents of another state from entering, but they can require quarantines or statements of purpose. "
