Enjoyed it. The bit where German sends threatening messages was odd. The U Boat tactics, suicidal. Still tense and enjoyable.

I concur, a fine film indeed. I'm adding it to my collection when I get the chance.

These were exactly my two complaints. Otherwise it is a fine film. Acting is outstanding.
Naval History Magazine has several articles this month on the film. Attention to detail
was paramount in the production.

SPOILER ALERT FOR GREYHOUND

I watched Greyhound.

I was expecting a lot from it – being a fan of Tom Hanks since Volunteers and Splash! – and really enjoyed Band of Brothers.

It didn’t quite live up to expectations, but I would say I enjoyed it and was glad I saw it. The positives outweighed the negatives definitely.

Positives
- The greyness of the Atlantic was well borne out
- The action scenes were generally good (although they overplayed the close encounters on the surface which did happen but were hardly standard German tactics)
- The death of Cleveland was a shocker – a very likeable character
- Stephen Graham appears to be an honorary American now
- CGI was pretty good (unlike so many aircraft portrayals) – the Fletcher-class and the Flower-class corvette, looked to be sufficiently accurate
- Good to see the RN and the RCN were included as well as reference to merchant sailors from other allied nations (through the Greek merchant)

Negatives
- Of all the names they could have used (Harry was pretty cool) why did they call a British destroyer Eagle?? No!!!!!!
- The movement inside the ship didn’t seem to match what the destroyer was doing, battling against the waves, and the sailors should have been battling the elements more – cold, wet and being thrown about
- Elisabeth Shue’s part really wasn’t worth turning up for. I mean give her a bit more to do or just decide to do away with her “character” altogether. A waste of 5 minutes or whatever she was on for.
- The taunting of the crew by the U-boat commanders….. mmm that was the only bit that really grated. Just no. As far as I know there was no incidence of this and it was all a bit hammy.

Watched it yesterday haha funny you created this topic.

Visually it was really great, I enjoyed it, I heard they used real boats for some shots, in Montreal and somewhere else I don't remember.
The vocabulary they're using is detailed and you can see they spent a long time doing research.

Now what I liked less, is that weird whale noise every time they show a U-Boot, why ? Just why ? Just like they're crying or something it was disturbing.

As OP said the germans were broadcasting / speaking directly to Tom Hanks through the radio, they were bragging it was indeed weird I don't know if this is 100% historically accurate ? Need to do some research.

And finally what shocked me is the way U-Boots came like just next to the boat and they like started firing at each other and this was indeed suicidal I mean what are the chances the submarine can sink a warship with a single gun when the other has like 4 or 8. This was weird.

So yeah, that's what I had to say about it :)

The U Boats did seem menacing..great cinematography that. Though yeah odd whale sound, and they lost all aura of menacing when they became suicidal and apart from a run of sinkings pretty bloody useless.

Also they seem to have run out of depth charges darn quick.

AT times the special effects\CGI was made for TV quality.

Seen a lot worse though.

Was well worth watching though doubt nI'd set out to watch again.

A recent war film release I do highly recommend is a Finnish production Of Unknown Soldier. A tad long but a great watch.

The film is based on a fictional destroyer while the real Greyhound destroyer existed, it was English.
The film is entertaining but it is part of the new line which consists of distorting reality to please contemporary standards and above all not to create controversy, without of course warning the viewer.
We like it or we don't like it.
I do not like.

They probably switched it to American because the US is a larger market. But if it is entertaining and gets people interested in history, all the better.

I liked it, even if it was basically Das Boot on the surface crossed with Aliens. The plot was thin, the characterization null, but the action was a welcome non-stop.

The vastness and the fury of North Atlantic in Winter was well represented, IMHO.

The CGI itself was an interesting preview of what we will see on next-gen consoles.

I didn't really understand why the U-Boats were always wailing like stirring Godzillas or the tripods from War of the Worlds.

The U-Boat drive-by scene, which looked so absurd in the trailer, actually had a logic in the movie. I won't spoil, but I wonder if, even once, a German commander tried that maneuver for the reasons explained in the scene. For sure I'll never attempt the same in Silent Hunter III...

*** out of ***** from me.
