Highlights: RN bests IJN off Carnarvon.

Bases lost:
Gove is occupied by the Japanese

Bases liberated:
-

Allied ships lost:
xAKL Burwah on a supply run sinks at Norfolk Island, victim of two Type 88 mines - the escorting minesweeper cleared 27 mines but missed at least two...

Enemy ships sunk:
-

Japanese Home Islands:
Japanese aerial ASW around the HI has increased notably:
SS Pike reports having been sighted by the enemy at 112 , 109
SS Gato reports having been sighted by the enemy at 100 , 63
SS Sturgeon reports having been sighted by the enemy at 100 , 128
SS Flying Fish reports having been sighted by the enemy at 103 , 62

Japanese SRA:
Japanese DA at Bandoeng, finally. Stopped cold with over 2100 Japanese casualties vs. less than 300 Dutchmen.

CBI:
Akyab airfield bombed, no resistance.

Western Australia:
Center of the actions this turn. In three day and one night engagements, two RN cruiser SAGs (2 CL, 2DD / 2 CA, 2 CL, 7 DD) tangled with a Japanese cruiser SAG (2 CA, CL, 5 DD). No ships sunk outright but potentially CA Nachi and two DDs are now more of a liability than an asset.

On the ground, Aussie forces mauled the Japanese troops outside Carnarvon, killing some and pushing others further up the coast towards Exmouth. Aussie troops will retreat temporarily to Carnarvon to await the establishment of air cover before venturing out again.

Northern Australia:
-

SWPac:
Lexington made Sydney with 29 major float damage for pumping-out and fixing sys damage. She's too big for the local repair yard and the ARDs and will gather a bunch of DDs due for upgrade coming month as escorts for a trip to CONUS. Her airgroup will remain in Oz. Her sister Saratoga also offloaded her airgroup and will undergo a long refit.
A probing attack at Portland Roads reveals level-2 forts and SNLF garrison. More forces are ordered to join the party.

SoPac:
APDs will start moving engineers and AV upport to Norfolk Is. Tender-based PBYs are navalsearching the approached to Noumea. While the 2nd Marine Division is growing fat at Suva, elements of the 1st Marine Division and Army forces are migrating to Fiji. The island is building-up nicely as a spring board for future operations. All Marine forces are preppoing for Noumea, obviously.

CentPac:
Hornet and accompanying cruisers are back at Pearl from the Canton Raid, repairing some slight damage before joining forces in the SoPac.

NoPac:
-

Homefront / Rear areas:
1st Marine Regiment packing for load at San Diego to move to the SoPac.

Intel:
-

Nice work against the IJN near Carnarvon!

Looks like you are planning to take Noumea by brute force with a direct Amphib landing. Of course that is where the majority of the IJ resistance will be - maybe even some coast artillery. For that reason I prefer to land a smaller force to take La Foa followed quickly by the Marine divisions to reinforce at La Foa and cut off Noumea. Much easier to march overland to the confrontation at Noumea.

2 Zeros downed over Portland Roads for no losses.
IJN subs active off Tahiti and Sydney, xAKL Buijskes sunk by I-20 off Sydney with artillery.
Many ships taken out of commission for the long June upgrades and more to follow when arriving at destinations - sealanes will be deserted for the coming 2-3 weeks.

SWPac:
Warhawks based sweep Portland Roads, five Zeros downed for three P-40s lost.
Portland Road bombarded by IJN (2 CA, CL, 5 DD) - I would have expected that the presence of a huge Allied BB force in the area would scare the IJN away.
Another deliberate attack at Portland Roads causes 224 Japanese casualties against only 13 Australians the first day, second day went even better - base taken, but not shown as such in the combat report due to sync bug and Allied High Command did not realize the success until four days later...

Highlights: Manila defeats ground attack, Betties butchered, Akagi torpedoed

Bases lost:
-

Bases liberated:
-

Allied ships lost:
xAK Ima torpedoed by I-162 near Addu

Enemy ships sunk:
-

Japanese Home Islands:
USN subs sniffing around for convoys on the approaches to the HI, but no cigars.

Japanese SRA:
Bombings continue at Bandoeng and Manila.
Deliberate ground attack defeated by Manila garrison!

CBI:
Japanese bombing attacks against the RM Viper Force scouting for the enemy in the jungles between Cox's Bazaar and Kalemyo intercepted by LRCAP, two escorting Zero traded for two P-40E.
Allied 2E bombers hit the IJA 143rd Infantry Regiment at Katha, causing negligible casualties.

Western Australia:
Carnarvon is slowly building-up base facilities, Australian Warhawks now providing CAP.

Northern Australia:
Despite airlift, Tennant Creek supplies remain stuck at 20 units, but airbase construction to raise supply cap proceeds slowly.

SWPac:
Unescorted Betties tried to attack Allied BBs operating near Portland Roads under LRCAP from Coen. 13 Betties splashed, no damage suffered.

SoPac:
Norfolk Island is being reinforced by small convoys while building-up slowly. Some convoys remain at sea shuffling troops and fighter planes to front bases, but majority of merchant shipping is undergoing upgrades or heading to CONUS bases to upgrade. CV Hornet has reached New Zealand, which means the three Yorktown class carriers are united. The two Saratogas however are unavailable due to repairs / upgrades. Not the best time for KB to show up - it has been sighted by air and by submarine north of New Caledonia. USS Sailfish managed to find a working fish for Akagi! Just a flesh wound on that behemoth for sure, but maybe enough to remove her for some yard time.

Highlights: Portland Roads taken, major IJN units spotted near Luganville, Manila withstands another ground attack

Bases lost:
-

Bases liberated:
Portland Roads (actually taken earlier, the news travelled slowly)

Allied ships lost:
-

Enemy ships sunk:
-

Japanese Home Islands:
USN subs still sniffing for convoy routes without success.

Japanese SRA:
Manila, Bandoeng, Sintang (Borneo) bombed; DA at Manila reduced forts to 0 and caused thousands of casualties on both sides. Sync bug actually show Manila taken - but not yet comrades, not yet.

CBI:
-

Western Australia:
Ground offensive against Exmouth under way, Australian infantry with 2 arty and 3 tank units in support, moving out of Carnarvon.

Northern Australia:
Betties hit the 10th Cav Recce Regiment on a recon mission near Daly Waters, causing 41 casualties.

SWPac:
Portland Roads found in Allied hands since June 12th, during that turn the sync bug hit as well and did not show the base capture. In consequence, major efforts against that base continued. The four British R class BBs bombarded Portland Roads, causing 71 casualties. On the way back to Townsville, RO-68 managed to torpedo BB Royal Sovereign, which needs to go to Capte Town to fix 11 points of major flood damage. B-26s and B-25s also bombed Portland Roads, adding more casualties. Finally, two DAs at Portland Roads destroyed the remaining enemy units.
The ex-PM garrison starving in the jungles between PM and Milne Bay continues being bombed by Betties and bombarded by the IJA 18th division, while PBYs continue to evacuate as many men as possible. Of the 8th AUS Div, only the heavy material remains, so efforts now concentrate on the 4th AUS Div.
USS Sturgeon attacked a convoy of 2 DD and 4 xAP near Finschhafen, obtaining no hits and heavy damage in the ensuing ASW counterattack.

SoPac:
2 enemy TFs - BBs Kirishima, Hiei, CS Chitose, 2 CA, 5 DDs and 2 CA, CL, 5 DDs - have been spotted by USS Seal near Luganville at 119,148, the sub launched 4 torps at CL Tama but missed. USS Spearfish has torpedoed AMC Kongo Maru near Munda, leaving the ship on fire.

CentPac:
Desoite thunderstorms, Funafuti has been bombed by an entire group of B-17s from Suva, causing over 200 casualties among the 53rd Naval Guard Unit.

Highlights: IJA offensives in Southern China. The end is near on PNG.

Bases lost:
Kwangchowan
Kukong

Bases liberated:
-

Allied ships lost:
PC Ariadne sunk by I-1 near San Diego

Enemy ships sunk:
CM Tsubame

Japanese Home Islands:
-

Japanese SRA:
Dutch sub O16 on patrol off Sunda Strait encounters a minelaying TFs (2 CM, DMS), probably bound for Cocos Island, sinking CM Tsubame.
Manila, Bandoeng bombed as usual. Only bombardment attacks at Manila.

CBI:
Dutch DD Isaac Sweers bombards Akyab, causing minimal damage. Sub HMS Trusty finally finds a Burma convoy (DD, TB, SC, 5 xAP) near Phuket, but is parried by escorts.
In China, enemy forces are investing and trying to surround Kukong, Chinese units at Kukong have been ordered to withdraw and the base flipped. The weakly held coastal base at Kwangchowan has been taken by largely superior IJA forces. This does not bode well for neighboring Pakhoi and threatens Nanning and Liuchow. Reinforcements are being scrapped together at Chungking and other places to be sent to Liuchow just in case.

Western Australia:
-

Northern Australia:
10th Cav Recce Regiment near Daly Waters hit hard by Betties, 16 squads and 10 vehicles destroyed.

SWPac:
Netties and Vals hitting ex-PM garrison on PNG. Shock attacks caused heavy casualties.

SoPac:
USS S-18 finds convoy near Koumac - AMC, CM, DMS, DD - but was forced to dive by alert escort. USS Dolphin has left a few mines at Koumac, the DMS found them promptly.
I-160 suffered heavy damage by convoy escorts near Norfolk Island. Same TF (AVD, AM, xAP) also ran into I-22 near Lord Howe Island, no damage by either side. Several such mini-convoys continue to shuffle construction and base forces from Lord Howe to Norfolk.

CentPac:
Funafuti hit again by B-17s, causing over 600 casualties.

NoPac:
-

Homefront / Rear areas:
I-1 bested an ASW TF hunting her, sinking PC Ariadne.

Highlights: Luzon under complete Japanese control - Manila falls

Bases lost:
Manila

Bases liberated:
-

Allied ships lost:
-

Enemy ships sunk:
-

Japanese Home Islands:
-

Japanese SRA:
The usual bombings of Manila, Bandoeng, Sitang - Manila being on that list for the last time, the base finally fell this turn after six months of siege. Last remaining base in the PI under Allied control is Cebu.

CBI:
The Flying Tigers and British Hurricanes swept Akyab and encountered Oscars on CAP - 4 Ki-43-Ic downed against one P-40. After the sweeps, 2Es hit Akyab and caused minimum damage to the RTA Cavalry Division. Escorts traded one P-40for one Oscar. On the ground, our advance force has reached Akyab. Betties with Zero escort bombed them promptly, but causing no damage.

Western Australia:
Betties with Zero escort tried another attack on the Aussie tanks advancing on Exmouth, this time meeting Kittyhawks on LRCAP. One Zero and one Betty downed for no losses.

Northern Australia:
-

SWPac:
Night attacks on Horn Island airbase by a B-26 squadron destroyed two Zeros on the ground.
Another night attack by another B-26 squadron on Port Moresby encountered Ki-45s on CAP - no losses, no damage caused either.
During daylight, P-39s and P-400 from Coen (the P-40s rotated back to Cooktown for a rest) swept Horn Island, trading 2 P-400 and one P-39 for 3 Zeros.

SoPac:
USS Tautog torpedoed PB Ikunta Maru near Kavieng

CentPac:
B-17s switched to Funafuti again, causing about 200 casualties.

NoPac:
-

Homefront / Rear areas:
USS Lexington and DD escorts due for upgrades have reached Mare Island. Fixing the torpedo damage on Lady Lex plus her scheduled upgrades will keep her for 74 days in the repair yard.

Intel:
With the fall of Manila, 4 IJA divisions will be available shortly for operations elsewhere. With Allied forces "front-loaded" and arrayed for counteroffensives in Burma, Western Australia and the Horn Island / PM area, the worst that may happen would be an invasion in the lightly held rear areas - Ceylon or Calcutta, Perth, or south of Townsville for example. I hope intel will provide some warning.

At least Canada seems to be safe from invasion - with all those units scheduled to withdraw out of theater parked "out of the way":

Highlights: US Omaha class "scouts" earned their pay

Bases lost:
Pakhoi

Bases liberated:
-

Allied ships lost:
-

Enemy ships sunk:
-

Japanese Home Islands:
-

Japanese SRA:
Bandoeng bombed and bombarded, Sintang bombed.

CBI:
Dutch DD Isaac Sweers bombarded Akyab once again, quite nicely this time. Hurricanes and Warhawks swept Akyab, no resistance encountered. Bombers followed to bomb the RTA Cavalry Division in multiple waves, but caused only 35 casualties. British ground forces arrived and bombardment has confirmed that only a few enemy cavalrymen are present.
Wellingtons night-bombing Magwe got deflected by Nicks and Oscars on CAP.
In China, Japanese troops capture the coastal city of Pakhoi.

Western Australia:
British SAG (2 CA, 3 CL, 7 DD) operating near Geralton escaped an attack by I-164.

Northern Australia:
Tennant Creek airbase now at level 3, supply flow has improved but a far cry from what is required for an overland campaign against Darwin.

SWPac:
A small US bombardment force (CL Marblehead, 4 DD, DMS) heading from Townsville to Horn Islands and back had to run a gauntlet of sub, I-170 near Cairns, RO-61 near Cooktown twice on, the way out and back. Several TFS of 4 APDs each on Fast Transport duty running supplies to Portland Roads also ran into these subs. Question of time before a torpedo connects.

SoPac:
B-17s from Suva bombed the III/84th Naval Guard Unit at Efate. CL Trenton bombarded Tanna, CL Raleigh bombarded Funafuti.

Highlights: USS Colorado torpedoed

Bases lost:
-

Bases liberated:
-

Allied ships lost:
APD John D. Ford sunk by I-170 near Cooktown

Enemy ships sunk:
-

Japanese Home Islands:
-

Japanese SRA:
Sintang, Bandoeng and Cebu bombed.

CBI:
Shoddy staff work failed to give new orders to the Blenheim groups after the fall of Akyab. Local commanders sent them to bomb enemy ground forces near Akyab - which have been covered by Oscars. 2 Blenheims lost.

Western Australia:
The British cruiser TF bombarded Exmouth, then encountered and damaged I-164 on the way back to Perth. Betties with Zero escort again bombed Aussie ground forces at Exmouth, trading a Zero for a Kittyhawk and inflicting 92 casualties. Our ground forces have supply issues, a small xAKL has been ordered to land supplies near Exmouth.

Northern Australia:
-

SWPac:
Horn Islands bombed by an entire Marauder group, causing heavy damage to the airfield.
As feared, the large USN bombardment group on its way to Horn Island did attract Netties - and the LRCAP provided from Coen was not enough - BB Colorado suffered a torpedo hit, but shrugged it of with superficial damage.
An APD running supplies to Portland Roads - which has reached airbase and port size 1 - was sunk by a Japanese sub near Cooktown.
Ground troops are gathering at Cooktown for use against Horn Island, but Portland Roads need a bigger airbase before we can launch the operation.

SoPac:
B-17s bombing Efate have been intercepted by Ki-45s, suffering a number of damaged bombers.
CL Trenton bombarded Efate, CL Raleigh bombarded Tanna.
I have lots of troops in the Fidjis - 2 Marine divisions, several US Army regiments, three Kiwi brigades plus lots of support - prepping for Noumea, Tanna, Efate, Luganville, Funafuti. With KB intact, I will probably have to wait for all six prewar US carriers to become available again after repairs/upgrades - which will be in 72 days plus travel time from CONUS to Fidji.

CentPac:
-

NoPac:
-

Homefront / Rear areas:
While some merchant ships have finished their June upgrades and are back on convoy duty, there are still numerous ships - including all US TKs and AOs - heading back from the POA to CONUS for their upgrades - traffic will be very reduced well into August. Consequently fuel starts to run low in the SoPac and in Australia.

Highlights: Horn Island bombarded by BBs but Army CAP SNAFUed and the Navy paid the price

Bases lost:
-

Bases liberated:
-

Allied ships lost:
APDs Alden, Barker and Parrott nettied between Portland Roads and Cooktown.

Enemy ships sunk:
DD Arashio sunk in port at Horn Islands

Japanese Home Islands:
US subs still searching for enemy convoys in the area between China, Formosa and the HI, but no luck.

Japanese SRA:
Usual bombings of Bandoeng, Sintang and Cebu.

CBI:
With several IJA divisions now available after the fall of Manila, it is important to occupy them with defensive duty instead of seeing them debarking in Australia or the SoPac Islands. The idea is to attract them to Burma - as far as possible from Japan and at the end of a long supply line. For this purpose, the British, Indian and Chinese forces in Burma will make noise around Akyab, Katha and Myitkyina, while engineering assets continue to expands bases on the railroad to Ledo, primarily in order to raise supply caps.

Western Australia:
Being supplied over the beaches, a ground attack at Exmouth reduces forts to 0 and causes heavy casualties on the Japanese side. Betties try to lend a hand, trading a Betty for a Kittyhawk on LRCAP.

Northern Australia:
-

SWPac:
Avoiding an attack by RO-67 just short of the destination, the US BBs bombarded Horn Island with average results, but find a Japanese DD in port - apparently a cripple. In the meantime multiple APDs dropped-off supplies at Portland Roads, avoiding attack by RO-68. Alas, shoddy staff work concerning the LRCAP air cover over the returning TFs resulted in a complete SNAFU (I shouldn't do turns at night, half asleep I botched the orders). The US fighters at Coen swept Horn Islands - witnessing the demise of DD Arashio - instead of protecting the fleet units. Netties promptly put torpedoes into APDs Alden, Barker and Parrott - all sunk - as well as into BB Mississippi, BB Idaho, BB Pennsylvania (2). None in danger of sinking, but they will be retiring southwards in "jumps" from base to base in the coming turns, this time under LRCAP. With Colorado having been hit last turn, 4 US BBs will need to go back to Pearl or CONUS for full repairs - *grrrr*.

Highlights: USN fails off Port Moresby, RN shines in the IO.

Bases lost:
-

Bases liberated:
Exmouth

Allied ships lost:
DD Helm, DD Ralph Talbot, DD Henley sunk by surface action at Port Moresby
PC Bingera and xAKL Kaiping sunk by air attack off Exmouth

Enemy ships sunk:
CVE Taiyo, AMC Awata Maru, E Shimushu sunk by British carrier air between Perth and Cape Town
SS I-164 sunk by ASW near Geralton

Japanese Home Islands:
-

Japanese SRA:
Usual bombings at Bandoeng

CBI:
Making noise in Burma involves air attacks at Warazup, still held by a IJA Tank regiment - B-25s and Warhawks hit the tanks at low-level causing very slight damage.

Western Australia:
Exmouth liberated, one PC and one xAKL shuttling supplies to that base sunk by Betties. A bombardment force led by three R-class BBs plus cruisers and DDs coming up from Perth won't be needed, but made a dent in the IJN submarine force. The British carrier TF - CV Formidable, CV Illustrious, CVL Hermes escorted by British, Australian and Dutch CLs, CLAA and DDs - patrolling in the IO on the Perth - Cape Town track was finally rewarded for weeks of dull going back and forth when spotting and attacking a IJN raiding force build around CVE Taiyo - the poor Japanese carrier didn't even had a chance to strike back.

Northern Australia:
-

SWPac:
Having spotted enemy TFs at Port Moresby the turn before, I have sent a DD strike force and a cover force lead by a CL on a raid - going full-speed from Cooktown to PM to arrive at night, with low threat tolerance. But surprise - night surface battles of the "fire torps and run" kind are not the strong point of the US Navy at this point of the war. 3 DD lost and nothing to show for. The US Air Corps as well wanted show what they cannot do yet - B-26s with pilots in the 70+ skill range for naval bombing attacked into CAP, lost 9 and hit nothing.

SoPac:
Noumea hit hard by US light cruisers.

CentPac:
Funafuti seems to be void of troops, a quick grab might be possible.

NoPac:
Adak Island has reached size 4 port and size 3 airbase and has become the main base in the area, being home of the 28th Composite airgroup and various tenders to support the trip-wire "Yippies" patrolling the Midway - Aleutians gap and the subs patrolling the northern part of the HI. The Dewey ARD provide heavy repair capacities at safer Kodiak for the NoPac striking force - the old and lightly armoured sisters CA Pensacola and Salt Lake City plus the Porter class DDs with their single-purpose 5-inchers. In the lousy weather and with enemy air bases far away, this is the right place for DDs lacking DP guns.

Homefront / Rear areas:
Some reinforcements - BB North Carolina, CV Wasp, bunch of CLAAs and DDs are crossing the Pacific on the way to the front. Ground reinforcements - mostly base forces and engineering assets - start to pile-up in Conus due to lack of shipping available - most ordinary merchies are tied-up with upgrades, the valuable amphib shipping (future APA and AKA) is being repaired and readied in Auckland and Sydney for upcoming ops. BB Royal Sovereign - torpedoes three weeks ago - has fixed all fixable damage at Sydney and left for Cape Town to repair the remaining major damage.

NOTE: We have a house rule prohibiting massed Panzer blitzkrieg, i.e. large "tanks only" stacks of multiple tank regiments attacking on their own are not allowed. A lone tank unit can be used as maneuvre unit, for mopping-up stragglers, attacking undefended or lightly defended bases and as recon-in-force for example. But if two or more tank units are involved, a "combined arms" approach must be used, i.e. infantry must participate in the attack. The 3rd Army Tank Brigade is a tank unit by name only, it is in fact an infantry unit.

Highlights: Pretty quiet.

Bases lost:
-

Bases liberated:

Allied ships lost:

Enemy ships sunk:
None.
But the potential was there this turn:
SS Sargo fails to attack a convoy at Port Moresby

Not a single "boom" of an exploding torpedo - guess that's why it is called the "Silent Service"...

Japanese Home Islands:
-

Japanese SRA:
Usual bombings of Bandoeng, Sintang, Cebu.

CBI:
Bombing and strafing of 14th Tank Rgt continues at Warazup with little effect.

Western Australia:
Japanese remnants at Exmouth eliminated.

Northern Australia:
-

SWPac:
B-26s bomb Horn Island, about 250 casualties inflicted on on Maizuru 1st SNLF but one bomber destroyed by flak

SoPac:
Viti Levu in the Fidjis is slowly sinking into the sea from the weight of all the troops, equipment and supplies piled onto the island - max tropp levels reached at Nandi and Suva.

CentPac:
-

NoPac:
-

Homefront / Rear areas:
The three Yorktowns at Sydney have finished the short July upgrade, Saratoga needs a week to finish, by that time Wasp should have arrived as well. Lexington won't be fixed and available before October. In the meantime the IJN should have gained Hiyo, Junyo and a CVL or two. Noumea looks too risky at the moment. I think I first will launch operations against Horn Island, Terapo and PM in order to benefit from nearby LBA - if I don't forget to set LRCAP again...

Nice work on that CVE TF off Perth! A morale booster for sure.
You must have gotten some bad die rolls on the TBs hitting your DDs around NG. DDs should be nimble enough and have enough AA to spoil their aim. Really hurts to lose so many DDs in 1942.

quote:

LargeSlowTarget: B-26s bomb Horn Island, about 250 casualties inflicted on on Maizuru 1st SNLF but one bomber destroyed by flak

In assessing the trade-off of bombers vs. enemy troop/device losses, I count only the destroyed squads/devices since the disabled ones can recover. The only time disabled devices count is if an attack by my LCUs is happening during the same turn. My general rule of thumb for 2-engined bombers is 10 destroyed squads/devices for one bomber. For 4-e bombers, more enemy assets must be destroyed. How many sort of depends on the aircraft model, since I get lots of some models but not so many of others.

Good hit on that CVE off Perth.....I assume that TF was waiting for a Cape Town to Perth AK convoy or something, and instead found the RN. Did you know it was there, or was that pure luck?

Those bombardments of PM....a reminder that base can be a trap for Japan. Basing planes there puts them at risk for exactly that type of bombardment.....

The British carriers have been patrolling the triangle between the Perth - CT transit route and the Carnarvon area for weeks, partly to guard against another raider intrusion (have suffered from that before) partly to provide distant support for the operation against Exmouth. TBH, I knew something had to be out there coming south when my CT-Pert convoys no longer made beelines but doglegs - bit cheesy but that's how the game works. The British carriers were close enough to take a look-see in the area north of the doglegs, and promptly found the raiders.

July 24/25, 1942

Highlights: Cocos Is. bombarded

Enemy ships sunk:
PB Seikyo Maru

CBI:

I-3 discovered by ASW forces off Sydney - incoming convoy rerouted to Melbourne.

However, the handful of Rufe float-fighters encountered and outnumbered more than 10:1 punched above their weight - 3 Allied planes lost for one Rufe downed. WTF?

LST: I wonder how the Allies got that information included in the After Action Reports...

I figure that is abstracted coastwatcher info that does not fit into the ship sighting reports because it is not happening at the port.
