Aussie cruisers sank a supply PB at Milne Bay, then bombarded the base.

A loaded xAP was sunk by Japanese sub west of Baker Is.

Tojo IIc research advanced a month, from Mar to Feb '44.

Having arrived at Liuchow, the Japanese bombarded to determine the Chinese defensive strength. I expect the forts to be at least level 3 -

An Aussie cruiser TF again bombarded Milne Bay, but did no damage -

quote:

CA Australia
CL Hobart
CL Perth

CA Canberra firing at 1st Division
Seagull V acting as spotter for CA Australia
CA Australia firing at 1st Division
CL Hobart firing at 1st Division
CL Perth firing at 1st Division

That's the complete combat report.

ADM Nagumo's carrier TF (CVs Hiryu, Soryu, Junyo, CVLs Shoho, Zuiho) departed Singapore showing Koepang as it's destination, but actually headed north toward Rangoon/Moulmein. Junyo and Shoho are still flying A6M2 Zero fighters; the other 3 have upgraded to A6M5. There are a lot of ships in port at Rangoon, and a probable battleship at Moulmein (probably damaged).

Too much moonlight.

An Allied xAP was sunk at Tabitueuea by sub torpedo. He's creeping toward Tarawa.

I had expected the Nagumo CV TF to move up toward Rangoon, but it hardly moved, so I guess some destroyer in the TF needed fuel. Tomorrow.

These Chinese units, now in Nanning with others that already withdrew west, are essentially out of the battle, because the minor road running north from Nanning will not allow them to rejoin the main battle line for the defense of Tuyun and other bases on the main road. As long as they are not destroyed.

Preview of Jun 28, 1942

Search has shown many Allied tankers have escaped Rangoon without being engaged. The Kirishima/Mutsu TF has been covering Nagumo's carrier TF. BB Mutsu will be detached and sent south, allowing the Kirishima TF one more hex in its pursuit of these tankers, and perhaps, CVL Hermes. Nagumo will move west to the north end of Andaman Is. to cover Kirishima, which will retire (hopefully) toward Port Blair.

Well, that was much ado about nothing! Our BB TF ran NW at high speed, encountered a British destroyer, which sank one of ours, then headed to Port Blair. Not sure if it ventured further to the NW, but if it did, it did NOT encounter any other ships -

After our combat TF retired, the US force sank our amphib TF to the last ship.

BB Yamashiro sank on the return to Kendari, but Nagato and most of the other ships are undamaged and still full of ammunition. They will join a 3 BB TF (Yamato, Kongo, and Ise, commanded by ADM Tanaka) headed into Dili, leading another amphib TF carrying 48 Div. The amphib force will NOT reach Dili today. A carrier TF (CV Akagi, CVL Ryujo) will join CVs Shokaku and Zuikaku arriving from Singapore -

This is a huge gamble on my part. I'm assuming the US battleships are low on ammo, and possibly fuel, but I don't know whether the Allies have AKEs or fuel at Koepang. They have a potent fighter force there, so a CV strike on his naval force could result in heavy loss of Zeroes, Vals, and Kates.

Edit to add: Email intel informs me that half of the US battleships did not fire in the engagement that sank Yamashiro.

The small CA Furutaka TF ran down to Lautem and sank another PT boat. A Dutch sub sank an xAP in the 48 Div amphib TF inbound to Dili. Helens bombed Chungking at night wasting more aviation fuel.

The now 4 BB TF (Yamato, Kongo, Nagato, and Ise) arrived at Dili and awaits the amphib TF 2 hexes behind -

CVs Hiryu and Soryu will arrive at Singapore today from operations near Rangoon. In addition to minor repairs and aircraft replenishment, they will begin the first 15-day upgrade AND air complement resizing (both Hiryu and Soryu have 63 plane capacity - the new configuration will be 32 Zeroes, 12 Kates (36 torpedoes), and 19 Vals). CV Junyo and the 2 CVLs will refuel and head to the DEI.

Production of 10 Ki-56 Thalia transport planes monthly is being stopped; the facility is being reconfigured to produce Ki-43-Ic Oscar fighters, which have been in short supply. In addition, production of 10 B5N1 Kates at Harbin is stopped; the facility will now produce B5N2 Kates. Production of H8K1 Emilys begins at 10 per month.

Why are the carrier strikes unescorted? If they were escorted, they might be more effective. Any chance to sink at sea those American BBs now should not be wasted.

I wish I knew. Shokaku and Zuikaku have full squadrons, recently upgraded to A6M5, but still only 18 fighters per. I can change that in July (it's now July 1, so the resize will be happening soon). Akagi is a little short on fighters. Junyo has already been resized and has 32 fighters. CAP on all 5 carriers was set at 30% and LRCAP over my battleships was set at 30%, leaving 40% for escort. For the July 1 turn, I reduced some to 20%, hoping to get some escort, but I haven't got the turn back yet. The only other possibility is the fighter leaders suck - I haven't checked that - they should be the same as what started the game, unless the starting leaders got killed and replaced by AI.

Try to have non-flying leaders for your air units.

Jul 1, 1942 (part 2)

Bases captured today: Maumere (vacant)

Hiryu and Soryu were slightly delayed, so will arrive at Singapore on Jul 2.

48 Div landed at Dili without interference from either the US battleships (which have departed Koepang for Darwin?) or the Dutch cruisers (which have left Lautem). It appears the Allied surface forces didn't want to tanangle with Yamato, which has been danangled at Dili with DL 10/10. {See Lowpe's AAR} 48 Div will continue (finish?) unloading at Dili on Jul 2, and engineers and aviation support should begin arriving from Ambon, their transports fighting their way through a bunch of US and Dutch subs.

CV Kaga joined the carrier TF and helped with morning and afternoon air strikes on shipping at Koepang -

I didn't expect a shock attack here as Nanning was already occupied by a sizeable force (all the divisions shown in the report, plus tanks and artillery). Three smaller units crossed the river from the SW, but only 1 shock attacked and 2 did nothing. The force already at Nanning conducted a deliberate attack.

It's a new virus!

About the river crossings and shock attacks - the units must cross through a hexside you already control if a SA is to be avoided. The two units that did nothing in the attack may have used up their ops points during the movement phase or they had no AV to contribute to the battle.

I didn't know they had to go in through a controlled hexside to avoid SA - learning something new everyday!

As to your virus theory - I thought it was funny when Lowpe had that typo, so I had one of my own!

Yes - I was implying that Lowpe's typo was contagious!

Bases captured today: Dili and Nanning (RES 5(35), LI 3(17))

In the DEI, the CA TF covering the carriers stopped following and attempted to attack the Allied ships at Lautem, which turned out to be the 4 remaining PT boats, which managed to evade combat. BB Kongo detached from ADM Tanaka's TF and formed a bombardment TF at Dili and hit the base (gently), after getting 4 hits on a Dutch sub -

OUCH! The quality of the carrier fighter pilots needs to be checked; it's probably not good.

Having arrived at Singapore, Hiryu and Soryu auto convert their air complement to 23 fighters, 23 dive bombers, and 15 torpedo bombers. Then these were manually converted to 32 fighters, 19 dive bombers, and 12 torpedo bombers. Since they carry 36 torpedoes, they will be able to launch at least 3 strikes with torpedoes. Hiryu and Soryu also began their 15-day upgrade. Junyo converted to 19, 19, 13 (auto), then was manually converted to 27 fighters, 20 dive bombers, and 6 torpedo bombers (carries only 18 torpedoes). In a previous post I said that Junyo had 32 fighters - that was incorrect; it's Ryujo that has 32 fighters.

The four big carriers operating in the DEI arrived at Soerabaja and converted their air complements -

Akagi and Kaga - to 30 fighters, 30 dive bombers, and 20 torpedo bombers
Shokaku and Zuikaku - to 27 fighters, 21 dive bombers, and 18 torpedo bombers

During the Jul 4 turn these were manually changed again to -

Akagi - 40 fighters, 25 dive bombers, and 15 torpedo bombers
Kaga - 42 fighters, 23 dive bombers, and 15 torpedo bombers
Shokaku and Zuikaku - 36 fighters, 21 dive bombers, and 15 torpedo bombers

On all four of these carriers, the torpedo bomber complement is one third of the torpedo load on the carrier.

At Soerabaja Ryujo began its 15-day upgrade.

Resource/oil/fuel flow in June

Resource

Hokkaido had ~1,050,000 resource produced; 1,091,000 was moved to Honshu.

Formosa had 66,000 excess resource produced; 50,000 was moved to the Home Islands.

China/Korea/Manchukuo had 717,000 excess resource produced; 705,000 was moved to the Home Islands.

Sakhalin had 294,000 resource produced; 322,000 was moved to Honshu.

A small amount of resource was moved from other areas to the Home Islands; a total of 2,654,000 resource was moved to the Home Islands vs. a need of ~2,415,000 per month.

Oil

The oil inventory has dropped from 3,200,000 on Dec 7 to 2,300,000 now.

Sumatra produced ~135,000 oil excess to its refinery needs; 134,000 was moved out.

Miri/Brunei produced 20,000 oil excess to its refinery needs; 31,000 was moved out.

China/Manchukuo need 18,000 oil per month; 25,000 was moved there from the DEI.

The Home Islands need 235,000 oil per month; only 100,000 was moved there.

No oil was moved from Indochina, Balikpapan, Tarakan, or Java. The small amounts of oil produced at Shikuka, on Hokkaido, and on Formosa were moved to the Home Islands.

Fuel

The fuel inventory has dropped from 4,400,000 on Dec 7 to 3,600,000 now.

Fuel was transported to Hokkaido from Honshu to meet Heavy Industry production needs. Net fuel moved into the Home Islands was only 25,000 vs. a production need for 127,000 per month. Time to park the carriers and battleships.

The refinery at Tarakan was the only one able to ship out more fuel than it produced - 18,000 vs. 15,000

Balikpapan 108,000 produced; 99,000 shipped
Medan 53,000 produced; 19,000 shipped
Miri 41,000 produced; 33,000 shipped
Palembang 202,000 produced; 120,000 shipped
Java 52,000 produced; 37,000 shipped

China received 61,000 fuel vs. a need for 20,000.
