Not a continuation from our "Act II" game, but a restart using DBB-C scenario 28 and non-variable reinforcements. Other start parameters and house rules remain the same with some very minor alterations. Although using a non-historical start and Japanese surprise, the Allies get some freedom of action with naval forces, though not enough to make a meaningful difference, in my opinion. I intend to concentrate this AAR on operations in China (I AM an Army guy, so the ground game is more interesting to me than it may be to most of the rest of you). And since we're playing this time with stacking limits the tactics will have to be somewhat different. Places like Changsha and Sian will need to be surrounded and deprived of supply before being attacked. Of course, Chinese supply is limited anyway, but getting it to near zero before attacking will certainly be helpful. Same thing at Clark Field and Bataan. There will be no attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec 7. KB will end up 7 hexes from Singapore to protect 5 Div transports that move from Hainan Island to Singkawang on Dec 7, but do not unload. They will then move to and assault Palembang, being protected by the Heavy Combat TF (2 BBs) and a cruiser TF, which start the game at Singora and Patani. The BBs cannot enter Palembang, but if he parks PoW and Repulse one hex out of that port, no amphib TF will get through. The Japanese BBs will move to one hex out of Palembang just in case, while the CAs escort the amphibs in. All the while covered by KB. 18 Div will land at Kota Bharu; 10 Tank Rgt lands at Patani; an infantry regiment lands at Singora; 14 Tank Rgt and the Imperial Guard Div rail from IndoChina to Singora. Hopefully, 10 Tank can get across the peninsula quickly enough to prevent a general retreat from Alor Star and Georgetown. The SNLF para regiments that start on Formosa will be flown to Cam Ranh Bay, then Malaya, for possible use on the multiple west coast bases of the extended map. The Luzon invasion force will consist of 16 Div landing south of Manila, followed by 4 Div (from Osaka), and eventually 1 Div (probably in pieces as it's bought out from Manchukuo). The usual array of aviation support will land at Aparri on Dec 7. 65 Bde is available to land anywhere between Subic Bay and Vigan on the west coast, as the situation allows. 48 Div will reinforce 5 Div on Sumatra. 2 Div (which I usually use to capture Mindanao early) will go from Sendai to the Aleutian Islands, where I hope to grab islands from Attu to Adak before the Allies occupy them. CVLs Ryujo and Zuiho and 2 battleships will likely join this invasion force within a week or 2. In China I plan to maintain all garrisons at or very near the garrison requirements, which will mean the pace of advance will be slower than usual. I expect an early attack on Ichang by the numerous Chinese Corps around it. This didn't happen in our previous games, but my opponent has learned from failure. The first job of the Japanese forces in China, other than the capture of Hong Kong, will be to open the rail line from Chengchow to Wuhan (Wuchang-Hankow). All of the tank regiments in Manchukuo will be bought out early (4 of them on Dec 7) to reinforce this effort. China will receive additional supply from Japan weekly, delivered to Hankow (~10k) and Shanghai (~20k). Aircraft research and production - the following will get the most research facilities: Tony Ki-61 x5, but only 2 will produce Tojo Ki-44 x3, but only 2 will produce Sam A7M2 x7 Ki-83 x6 Judy D4Y1 x6, 3 or 4 will produce Jill B6N1 x6, 3 or 4 will produce Rufe A6M2-N x7, but only 1 will produce Frank Ki-84-a, x6 George N1K1-J, x6 I haven't done anything yet with the 3 Randy facilities - I'm open to suggestions. Also, even though these research sites have been changed, NONE of them have been expanded to 0(30); that uses too much supply. The Rufes will be expanded first, as they arrive first, but since a 0(30) facility due in 1945 is not much more likely to repair to 1(29) than a 0(2) to 1(1), there's no hurry. To keep a tiddy supply situation these 52 research sites will probably be increased to 0(30) over 52 days. Ida Ki-36 will be produced at 32/month to use up at least half of the 332 Hitachi (early) engines. I would rather have Anns, but the Topsy I uses the same engine as Ann. Topsy Ki-57-I will be produced to use up the 101 Nakajima Ha-5 engines. Kate B5N1 will be produced to use up the 99 Nakajima Hikari engines. The CVLs will probably be flying the Kate N1 until 1943. Nate Ki-27b will be produced at 35/month (for probably 6 months) to use up the 254 Nakajima Kotobuki engines. Chris had his last day of work on Friday, so I expect the game pace to be faster than the 2 turns per week of the past. Maps to follow.

All of those divisions, where does the Japanese get them all?[&:] Five divisions going to Palamebang, eighteen divisions at Kota Bharu, sixteen divisions landing south of Manila, four divisions coming from Osaka, not to mention all of those tank regiments and the sixty five brigades! [;)] With all of those troops, just land on the West Coast! [;)]

KB strike on Singapore is interesting. You definitely will not bag as many VPs, but there are some ships in port, particularly CL Mauritius and a couple Australian AMCs that later convert to LSIs....those are somewhat valuable, though didn't look like you hit those in this strike. It does position you perfectly for an early Palembang and/or Mersing landing. It will clear Force Z for sure. Downsides: --Those waters are hazardous for sub attacks, so there is much higher sub-risk than other areas --Doesn't cover Wake landing....you probably need to cancel that or it could easily get jumped --You'll need to be very carful going to Rabaul as well, unless KB makes for Truk after Palembang taken

As there were Allied TFs at Singapore, those were attacked and not the port. But, hanging around. You're absolutely right about Palembang - that is indeed my objective! IJA 5th Div is on transports at Singkawang, using a warp move from Samah on Dec 7 to get there. That amphib TF will follow the 2 BB TF and a CA TF in to one hex from Palembang on Dec 8 (the BBs leading in case Force Z goes there), then follow the CA TF into Palembang on Dec 9. Meanwhile, all three covered by KB which will move from 7 hexes east of Singapore to 5 hexes SE. There will be no early invasion of Mersing this time, as I agreed to do a "closer to historical" invasion of Malaya. Mersing is off the table until Dec 25, per our agreement. Nothing going to either Wake or Rabaul at the moment. I might use the Guam invasion force to take Wake after Guam is secured. But, I'm also thinking of initially bypassing Rabaul for Buna and Shortlands, then take Rabaul later. There is definitely no hurry to take Wake. The IJA 2nd Div (which mostly starts at Sendai) is going to the Aleutians, so those landings will definitely be a surprise. The TF shows Midway as the destination, but is heading toward Adak as a waypoint.

Good feedback! --That Mersing rule is an unusual House Rule; while a Dec 7 landing there IMO is not kosher (Japanese could not get that close to Mersing historically on the 6th without raising massive alarm), delay until 25th is tough --Good call on Palembang, just bring a base force so you can have CAP over it Day 1....Dutch can bomb it from Batavia --I think you can delay Wake, it will just could take alot more effort in the future. If I am Allies, I would load-up another Marine Def Bn at Pearl right away when I know where KB is, and maybe even some tanks or something. Just be prepared to bring BBs when you do come back, could be much tougher nut. IMO, you do need Wake eventually, but it's not a very strategic asset, because the airbase is too small. --Rabaul can be bypassed, but it's also the only decent airfield there, so I would make an effort to take it. If you clear Rabaul and put an Air HQ there, you can take the rest of the Solomons without CV support

Once Wake is clear of fighters, bomb the ground units at 11k feet since not much should shoot back. Bomb with Kates as well. Then BBs on the turn of the invasion which could even be a Fast Transport mission with a Remain On Station so they can bombard with the remaining ammo the next day if need. The BBs can hang around as well.

Dec 8, 1941 Bases captured today: Aparri, Naga, Kota Bharu, Makin, Singkawang KB found itself in a target rich environment south of Singapore and attacked several TFs, unfortunately, several of the strikes went without fighter escort, so losses in Vals and Kates were unacceptable. The BBs can hang around as well. Agreed there isn't much flak, but how do you clear the fighters without any CVs nearby? Surface units are several turns away, and very risky with 2 USN CVs lurking...... That's the challenge with Wake, I think it has to be left until you can get CV support (or at least until KB can disappear for a few days)

Dec 9, 1941 Bases captured today: Kweiteh (flipped), Nauru Is., Tarawa, Tuguegarao (para drop) The heavy BB TF leading the pack into Palembang sank a couple small ships and discovered a minefield one hex out from Palembang, but no damage to any ships. The battleships will now retire to cover KB lurking nearby. The cruiser and amphib TFs have reached Palembang and the transports (5th Div(+)) will unload on the 10th. Hong Kong forts were reduced from 3 to 2 by engineers in a 1:2 deliberate attack. A word on aircraft research - these are the number of research "factories" for future aircraft: Rufe - 7 Sam - 8 Judy - 6 Jill - 6 Tojo - 3 Tony - 5 Frank - 6 George - 6 Ki-83 - 6 I've deliberately slowed the expansion to 30 to ensure plentiful supply (as defined by the accumulated supply at Tokyo). Edit to add: Intel provided by email informs me that 2 Dutch pilots are now aces (from the action on Dec 8).

I should have shown Davao (or elsewhere) as the destination with Talaud as a waypoint. Of course, I don't know for sure whether he had intel on the move or just got lucky, but I would expect the former. The Japanese DDs are limping back to Babeldaob in bad shape; the 9 JNAF Coy and the transports are at the bottom of the Celebes Sea. CVLs Ryujo and Zuiho TFs have merged east of the Philippines and along with a battleship TF are heading toward Babeldaob to fix this mess. It appears that the Chinese are attempting to encircle Ichang and Sinyang; I already have over 400 AV at Sinyang and they have nowhere near that much. Our main objective at the moment is to open the rail line through Chengchow.

Dec 11, 1941 - Palembang captured Bases captured today: Laoag (flipped, occupied by 65 Bde), Atimonan (vacant, occupied by Miura Det.), Palembang (defenders retreated SW, occupied by 5th Div(+); NO damage to oil or refinery), Miri (defender surrendered, occupied by several SNLFs and support; oil and refinery 50% damage), Legaspi (vacant, occupied by SNLF). Bases IJA/IJN troops landed today: Guam, Hollandia, Vanimo, Wewak, Aitape, Brunei; all should be captured tomorrow. In other news, 3 Air HQ arrived at Kota Bharu by sea. Chinese troops continue their general withdraw. Blenheims bombed Bangkok destroying half of the refinery capacity, which is now 10(10). This won't be repaired until Rangoon is captured. Nates alone are incapable of defending the base. Oscars are defending Palembang; the other Oscar unit of 3 Air is escorting bombing runs in Malaya. The Zeroes of 22 Air Flotilla are stationed at Kota Bharu sweeping Brit & AVG(!) fighters in Malaya wherever found.

With the previous capture of Palembang and Miri there should now be sufficient fuel to support limited expansion of HI; the following bases expand HI by 10: Tokyo, Yokohama, Kobe, Shanghai, and Saigon. We lost a big AO (to a sub) enroute to refueling KB near Miri (with a 4 destroyer escort!) Hong Kong repair shipyard has been fully repaired (to 50).
