Greetings Lobster,
You are correct that Kiev '43 & Schwerpunkt WW II have less in the way of learning curves.
However, Kiev '43 is huge like Kursk '43 and takes a lot of time to complete. I have played JTS Kharkov '42 & '43 as well.
It is the time needed that is the sticking point. I have owned and played almost every Panzer Campaign game (West, East & Mediterranean).

The Schwerpunkt game problem is the user interface (played RGW game) which takes a lot of time.

My go to game is John Tiller's Campaign series these days along with Combat Mission.

Greetings Again 76mm,
I have to agree with you about the Combat Mission franchise having left the Eastern Front for modern era games.
I did buy Shock Force 2 & Black Sea (modern eastern front) to support Battlefront in hopes that they would return to Russian front.
I like CM Red Thunder but do not love it like I do CM Barbarossa to Berlin (1941-45).
Operation Bagration: destruction of army group center does not give the German side player much more than delaying actions.
I tend to play the Soviet side with superiority in numbers. However, it can be puzzle like at times to achieve objectives.

My hope is that CM Red Thunder game/module for 1943 (Kursk or Kiev or Kharkov) is next.

I do find Matrixgames Decisive Campaign series good for East Front operational action.

I think Tunisia'43 was the right scale for me to play the full campaign vs pbem or AI. But France'14 wasn't. I give up after a couple of turns. I think dilemma here about demanding best possible full campaign scenario-most people won't play- and smaller scale one it is easier to play. If latest games designers going for smaller scenarious I won't object. I rarely see full campign games. Cheers.
