I have been able to withdraw half the offending ships. That leaves me 5 on the board. Of those one I can remove from the board next turn. Unfortunately the other 4 are about a far away from from a legal place for withdrawal as you can get. For instance Queen Elizabeth is in Nourmea. I am going to continue this game h and at least see if I am bleeding Political Points at a slower rate or hopefully be slightly above the red line for losing points per turn. At least now I know to send some other soon to withdraw ships on their way. I have been using the WIP Tracker, but really only reading information level alerts and intel reports (I gotta know a little bit a head when the are the Japanese going to launch another failed invasion of Canton Island?). I need to start digging in a little deeper to it from here on out.

You can withdraw ships from Sydney Australia if it is not threatened by the Japanese.

What RJ said. The manual is not up to date on the withdrawal locations. The patches since original release of the game added a lot of locations.

Ships are the real buggers when it comes to making withdrawals on time.

It often takes far longer to get them to a withdrawal port than it does for air squadrons to get a base that works.

It pays to look far ahead with regard to ship withdrawals.
You don't want to discover 4 days before a withdrawal is due that the ship in question is in a cargo TF in the middle of the ocean.

IIRC the first ship withdrawal is the Dominion Monarch which starts in Singapore.
It should have left Singapore on turn one.

I typically try to look 2-3 months ahead on ship withdrawals so all can be identified, located and a route to a withdrawal port planned.

Good advice.

That with it makes it 2 turns to get down to 1 ship over due and one more turn to clear the overdue list. After I saw you post about Sydney it gave me the idea to test Columbo after I could not get rid of CL Emerald at Trincomalee. Columbo worked.

Yes, Columbo also works if it is not threatened by the Japanese.

Also I think the games you tend to struggle more are more memorable and fun than the games where everything just went perfect.

And what game(s) might those be...

Seriously, I've never had one.

See! They are not memorable at all!
I also can't remember ever having a perfect game, must have slipped my mind.

I'd like to thank every for responding to my thread post. It makes me feel like this is a welcoming crowd. I do not think there was one post I did not get something out of. Looks like I am continuing the game. I still have one more ship withdraw but it's going of the board next turn. My PP dipped as far as -268, but is now headed toward the black again. I am guessing it will take slightly over a week in game time to get in the black. I am pretty stingy using PP so I should survive. I now have the ships that are on my 90 withdrawal list headed toward a withdrawal area. I have been planning and building for my Guadalcanal/Tulagi for two months now. I was going to spend big PP about a week before my planned July 27th invasion fleet launch. I'm not delaying it, but looks like it will be an operation shoestring now.

The thing to remember is the Allies did much the same as every AE newbie. Mistake after mistake during the early part of the war. Not quite enough stuff, not enough of that in the right locations, and then a full assortment of bone-headed moves. After all, it was a "learning cliff" for the Allies, too. Not many folks remember that in late 1942 the US was down to a single aircraft carrier in the South Pacific (Enterprise) and that one was damaged. Almost any newbie will do better than that! And sure enough, about half way through 1942 the logistics are swinging in your favor, and by early 1943 the floodgates are opening and you begin to acquire all sorts of new (and better) equipment. By 1944 you'll have more than you know what to do with, and those opening campaign mistakes will be a distant memory, with little to no impact on your inevitable victory.

I think I will look at my PP problem as as Commander In Chief of all Pacific Forces I said something stupid to the press corps and I need a big victory now. Now, my new problem is mismanagement of my CV Dive Bombers airframe replacements. I still have all 6 of the first USN CVs, but Saratoga and Enterprise are in pearl for lack of aircraft. I least Saratoga was due for a refit anyway. This has gotten me back into again rereading the manual. At this point I have a little more foundation and the finer points are getting easier to soak in. BTW, I used your spreadsheet for the start of this particular game.

For what its worth....welcome back.

I did what you did played WIP, had a break from it of nearly ten years and came back. I threw myself in the deepend I'm in mid 44, yes I have used the time machine to reverse six months twice now. I'm using this as a learning exercise to go back and play from the start again how I wish I had started this.

I've learned a lot its made me a better player
