Does Matrix and Steam users use the same PBEM lobby to place and accept challenges, if a Matrix member here does not have a Steam registered SCWWI game, or vice-versa? Curious, for I have someone over at the Steam SCWWI forum who says they have a challenge posted, but that member's name does not appear on any of the challenges at the Matrix PBEM lobby??

I'm red shirt on steam but the server uses the matrix one. Most people advertising for a game don't post an open challenge on the server but a private one.

Hi KZ,

When I wrote the above post it had not been about you in particular, although later after communicating with you (yesterday) it did.

Below is where things started to get my attention:

quote:

Veresov has Strategic Command: World War I Sep 14 @ 12:17pm
I was talking about the AARs not the ease of accessibility of the forum, or the multiplayer challenges. BTW - ELO is the matrix ranking system.

Good luck finding a multiplayer match that doesn't use ELO and house rules. I have been waiting over a month for a match and haven't gotten even a nibble on the Multiplayer forum there.
quote:

The above quote was made at the Steam SCWWI forum. Because I am interested in getting started with MP here I thought to take a look at the SCWWI pbem lobby to view Veresov's challenge, the problem was: There was no challenge with Veresov's name attached to it??? Hmmmm!! Why would he say he he did?

(sorry, I'm not good at doing quotes)

I was hoping that SC would respond to my original inquiry, it did not happen yet. Anyways, yesterday a fella named "Red Shirt" posted at the Steam SCWWI forum he had issued a challenge at the SCWWI pbem lobby. OK, I took a look at the lobby, there was no-one with the name "Red Shirt" there with a challenge. It turns out after texting with "Red Shirt" he is actually KZ when it comes to posting at the Matrix SCWWI forum. Ahhhh! Now I am starting to get an idea what is going on at the pbem lobby.. Steam identified users at the Steam SCWWI forum are using a different name than when posting at the Matrix forum, including at the Matrix controlled MP pbem challenge lobby.

Thanks to KZ for clearing that matter up..

I know for the World at War iteration of the game their a Elo community with standard (and rubbish, I agree with veresov) house rules but I don't think there's an equivalent for the world war 1 game.

To add to your post: I went back to the SCWWI pebm lobby and examined the challenges there for house rules and would a prospective MP player might know what they are and how they would know "before" entering into a match? First: Hovered over each individual challenge there as to what side the Host has chosen and a list of settings for the challenge (the list is very limited, iirc 6 standard selections and 2 optional), most of the challenges are of the standard settings type and some have an additional setting for "No end date". Now that is on the surface before a prospective player makes a choice on which Challenge to accept, However there is no way in the pbem lobby to know if there are additional rules (house rules) until you actually start the campaign, even then it might be too late to change your mind about continuing with the match. Did take notice of all the locked challenges, but had no idea if they were challenges (private/need password) waiting for an opponent? or, Challenges (matches) already in progress? Nothing I could see that could distinguish from the two.

Two days ago I posted my first "open challenge" as CP (standard rules) in the pbem lobby, someone accepted my challenge soon after, played my first turn then sent the pbem email with a brief chat. Waited anxiously till late Saturday, all day Sunday and now into Monday evening for a response, none yet.

It's people waiting for their opponent to enter the password. Ongoing games are not listed.

For some reason game done by open challenge get rubbish opponent that don't play or quit. Private games is where its at.

The rules you see in the lobby are game settings, houserules are just some additional informal rules players agree upon to prevent exploits. Afaik the only games that have "automatic" houserules are tournament games, in the others players just talk beforehand.
Also what you experienced in your open challenge seems to be VERY common. In fact it happened to me so often I now completely abstain from posting/accepting open challenges. My advice would be to arrange your games via the forum and just have a little chat with your opponent before you start, that usually saves both sides a lot of hassle.

I hear what you are saying about private games, but how does one/anyone contact the host to get a password to join a match? Tried to use the membership list at the top of this page to make contact, but the list failed to make a connection, meaning it does not recognize the member being requested, it's absurd, all I can do is lol.

If there's a private game up... odds are these people already have opponent lined up. It's pointless to try to reach them.

Just post yourself or answer one of such post. C'mon guy.

It think you missunderstand! The locked games in the list are the ones already taken. Just open a thread in this section of the forum asking for a game like this one
https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=5074725
Actually since this one may still be open you could also just pm turbo ...

Maybe you had not noticed I had posted here: https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=5076431 some days ago.. mrdozer2379 has had 2 challenges at the pbem lobby for quite a few days longer than my post, not only that, he is someone that I have gone MP with a couple of times before and know he is a dedicated player and not some smart mouth.

Yeah I saw. Was not a super successful attempt I gather. Either dig up a pm from your inbox and reply him directly or post an open invite in the multiplayer section, like normal people do.

Hi Bavre,

Don't get me wrong, I've played numerous MP matches mostly at CTGW including AARs, everything was taken care of in the CTGW MP lobby, rarely did anybody (when I was active) have to go to the forum to find opponents. The lobby clearly showed what was private and what was active matches, also what was open challenges, not only that, the lobby showed what matches had finished, of those only the host could delete. If an unanswered match turn went on for more than 30 days either player could request that a moderator remove that match from the lobby. To be honest: Scouring the SCWWI forum for a match is a bit different to me, for I have seen different MP stuff at different locations here, there, ect., it was my choice not to go chase them down if I did not have to. I would have liked to see the MP lobby more organized, however I am a bit late getting the new version of this game (hated tiles). My last thought here is: If somebody did not know better and checked out the MP lobby for the first time likely they'd think it was dead.

Thanks for your response..

Finally got a new opponent yesterday from the MP lobby, it sure looks like he knows what he is doing. This is baptism under fire, much to my chagrin There won't be an AAR on this one, maybe next time..

Completed a second turn, Russians everywhere!!!

I know I'm going to lose this match, regardless am going to fight to the bitter end. At first felt taking screen shots and posting them might not be worth it, however I'm having a change of heart and try and show and tell something from the experience. Other than doing a couple of turns in hotseat is the only experience I have in this new version of the game. The more I play SCWWI in MP, the more I like it..

Bavre hit it out of the park here. I also now NEVER join public challenges. All the ones I got involved with turned out to be ghosters, immature rage quiters, or thin skinned unfriendly folks. It was like no...my time is too valuable to waste with any swinging dick that shows up and posts a challenge on server.....

To find good opponents take patience to curate a list. Its informal..but once I started going 'public' here on the forums and off on PM's with folks..I started to know who was fun and serious about this hobby.

Also..from other unrelated games and multiplayer matches...it taught me to be wary over at Steam also.

Anyway...there's my 3 cents.

Hello OldCrowBalthazor,

Yes I see what you and others are saying, no doubt about it. I accept getting good and bad matches in MP open challenges as far as worthy or not goes, I also think back to my first time going MP, I was scared chitless, thinking do I really want to do this???? If it were not for an open challenge in the MP lobby, I probably would have never gone MP, that first match set the hook, I got un-mercilessly beat bad, got beat bad for the next several matches. But you know what? I felt alive..!! I'm going to play till I beat this thing, that first win was worth all the prior beatings.. It was then I knew I could compete with confidence and never looked back. By my doing open challenges I'm providing the opportunity for someone else to test the waters of MP, Just like the guy who gave me a chance the first time. Yes it get's frustrating getting the one turn done matches, but every once in awhile I get to see a champ coming of age and compete with others. I like to encourage members to go MP, not discourage them, talk to them, exchange ideas, the hey you did that wrong, try this, learn that. Well guess what? I'm the rookie here, you guys are my piers. At some point I may post a thread at the forum for opponents.

Currently, I have a guy kicking my ass, I can tell he is no rookie, I'm a little troubled he does not chat (maybe later).

Have been reviewing the suggested site. Can I use my Yahoo account instead of facebook, or google? I used to f12 then to game file, pick screenshot, edit it, then send it to desktop screen, leave all screenshots there till uploading, but now when I go to upload to Matrix I get the desktop file, but not the desktop screen. Had not done any screenshots since getting windows 10. If I cannot figure it out, I'll go with the suggestion (never used an image site before). Personally, I'm not all that savvy using a computer.
