2. What's wrong with using the CS units? Agreed on conversion, but there are many months before you can convert them in most mods, you may as well use them. Lots of JAKES on search, some RUFES when those are available, and a few extra heavy AA guns in the TF won't hurt either.....(edit: except for MIZUHO, she should be ported due to speed)



1. no idea, probably training, nothing else to use them for but then Rabaul is the wrong place anyways

2. all my CS that can convert to CVL go back to port as they are a potential CVL and every chance to lose them means a CVL lost. Was following this tactic in all my IJ games in the last years and has given me more than just a couple of times 1500 carrier based ac in 44 if you don't lose a carrier engagement in 43. I can't remember when a CS would have made any difference in my games but the CS converted to CVL definately did many times as I only put fighters onto them and two got their own air units anyways.

not much combat but nav search found a target of importance as KB has left Soerabaja again covering at least one enemy convoy... this is clearly going to be the reinforcement for Ambon's attackers... this time our fleet was ordered to intercept the enemy, goal is the destruction of the IJN's carrier force and major naval forces that are about to enter the Triangle of Death again...

given the number of casualties with each bombardment and the 61 reported enemy units at Rabaul I'd say the big majority of units must be base forces and the like... with recon only showing 71000 men there can't be a lot of combat troops... if that stays that way the Rabaul invasion will be a cakewalk which will trigger in about 5-6 weeks... bringing reinforcements to Rabaul would be a major task as we have air and sea superiority in the Bismarck Sea so without KB it would be hopeless and even then it would set KB to a rather big risk...

KB has been spotted with the rest of the Armada again and is steadily heading towards Ambon, got no doubts that this is the reinforcement for the bogged down Japanese there... as you can see at the bottom of the map we have sortied the fleet and by fleet I really mean the FLEET... all available carriers, Force Z, a BB lead USN SAG and two USN cruiser SAGs which are all lead by an ASW TF of four Bristol class DDs... haven't spotted any IJN subs in this area for an eternity so I doubt these will be an issue and if so they need a lucky moment considering all the DDs screening my ships... if the enemy keeps going for Ambon this is going to be the decisive battle the Japanese wanted to fight in the Pacific but in this case we're seeking it and it's going to happen in the Banda Sea...

we have roughly 630 aircraft on our carriers which should be at least 200 more than the Japanese should be able to field, depending on the CVEs being with KB or not but according to nav search and aircraft numbers shown I expect like 5-6 CVs plus 1 or 2 CVLs... with that number of carriers the enemy won't be able to resist a coordinated alpha strike from my carriers and I expect the fleet to resist a counterstrike which should be dispersed over a lot of capital ships and Darwin is close by with a level 6 port and over 1000 nav support...

at Ambon there's an amphibious TF unloading troops which has brought our av to over 600 already so even if everything would go wrong, the enemy needs at least three divs more to achieve something there, it's a jungle rough hex with level 5 forts and mostly fully prepped troops...

like a fly flying directly into a spider net the enemy fleet is moving into it's doom and if the enemy isn't suddenly turning around we are going to see a carrier engagement tomorrow and as it looks now KB has stood down it's bombers as my amphib TF still unloading at Ambon has been picked up by nav search and has full DL but not a single strike was flown against my ships at Ambon which are covered by several Warhawk squadrons... Mundy has "learnt" not to fly into LBA CAP but that learning effect could lead into double disaster tomorrow, if we kill or at least damage his carriers while they won't fly any return strikes...

have to say we are had some luck this turn as our fleet ended up 10 hexes from the enemy which means being in range of Jakes but our fleet wasn't picked up at all, the plan was to stay at least 11 hexes from the enemy but they moved one hex further than I expected... nav search doesn't even show 100 fighters on the enemy carriers which I'd expect to be more but I guess we won't see overwhelming numbers so if our alpha strike isn't completely screwed up it has the potential to be a crippling one to the enemy...

the amphibious TF at Ambon hasn't fully unloaded but was ordered to stop and head South East to get away from the enemy as I wouldn't be surprised to see a naval bombardment or a SAG sprinting to Ambon during the night... we have also flown the P-40 squadrons to Koepang as there's no need to keep them at Ambon...

Part of the problem with US torps that had the 80% dud rate was the depth setting that caused them to run under their targets. In the game that would show as a miss. I don't blame the sub skippers for those misses at this stage of the war.

I totally agree CT that is seems a bit wacky. I wonder if anyone has information on real life hit rates? I really do not know how many missed in the war, it just seems that there are a lot of complete misses, especially when 4 or 6 torpedoes are fired.

Real life hit rates for the Mark 14 in 1941/1942 were abysmal. Couple of the more egregious examples from December 1941 alone:

Seawolf firing 8 torpedoes at seaplane tender at anchor. No hits.
Sargo firing 13 torpedoes a week into the war at various freighters and tankers at short range. No hits.

The Argonaut however uses Mark 10 torpedoes which are significantly less problematic than the Mark 14s.

Status: offline 		Guys! No Mk-14 torps fired in this campaign. Also Argonaut is armed with Mk-10 torps. All my US fleet subs have been sitting in port since the start of the war, I don't even use them until 10/42 as it's just not worth the all the clickwork for me.

You only saw Dutch, British or S-class subs in this campaign, plus Argonaut. All of them have "working" torps.

The Mk-14 problem of real life you speak of is modelled in the game, showing as "DUDS". I'm not talking about DUDS, I'm talking about MISSES non stop. Like I've said, I have to be lucky to even get 1/3 of the torps to even HIT and then the targets are most of the time freighters. That's off. Granted, in this campaign it seems to be even worse than I usually experience but I doubt I ever had a hit rate better than 50%.

expected KB and the enemy fleet to be way closer to Ambon but I guess there was some refuelling as the enemy only moved three hexes during the whole turn but KB still ended up in perfect strike range of six hexes so the dive bombers were all carrying flat top killers... I don't like reacting carriers and usually am afraid of but this time our carrier group stayed with the rest of the fleet and launched a near perfect strike... we have all our USN fighter squadrons plus the Canadians on Indomitable flying CAP while five USMC F4F-3 squadrons are tasked to escort the USN bombers and we get 100% of the Marines flying with the main strike... there were a couple of SBD/TBF squadrons failing to link up but as it looks like the majority joined the alpha strike...

it must have been a horrible sight for the Japanese commander to see over 300 carrier based aircraft showing up against a CAP of just over 100 Zeroes... the CAP did quite well in downing a couple of dozen fighters and bombers but over 200 of our bombers attacked KB which meant game over for the enemy even though the hit rate of the bombers still wasn't great considering good weather... I've seen better hit rates than 20%, one of the problems were target aquisition though as lots of the bombers were attacking the Kongos and Yamato even though they would have been better off attacking the hapless carriers... most of the bomb hits on the carriers were 1000lb bomb hits going through the deck so I don't expect more than one or at best two carriers being able for flight ops next turn, with a bit of luck none of them will be able to launch aircraft anymore...

no carrier blew up or sunk during the turn but Junyo is a sure kill already... with five CV and two CVL our estimation of the enemy carrier strength was pretty much spot on...

that's it for the morning... you will have noticed that KB didn't launch a counter strike, enemy bombers must have been grounded or tasked with something else... that's the downside attacking into an area with lots of built up bases, you either have your aircraft attack into LBA CAP or keep them grounded and run the risk of being caught flat footed like in this case...

here's the afternoon strike, it's again a very well coordinated one (mind you, we are driving an Allied 630 carrier based aircraft TF around in 42) and to my surprise the enemy got as many fighters airborne as at the end of the morning... unlike in the morning the USMC fighters do better and down several Zeroes for no loss of their own but lots of enemy fighters break into the bomber formations and again down about two dozen bombers but that's not enough to prevent them from causing brutal damage to KB... if one can speak about luck, the enemy was lucky during both strikes that none of our bombs caused an ammo or fuel storage explosion but the damage dealt to the enemy carriers must be still crippling...

note that all but one TBF squadron was dropping bombs and not torpedoes, the one that attacked with torps was FUBAR on my side, wanted all of them attacking with bombs and not mostly defective torps that mostly miss anyways and two bombs per Avenger are nice when they are going in against unarmored carrier decks...

Status: offline 		horrible turn for the Japanese Admiral but looking at our bomber losses it's also been horrible for the USN as we nearly lost 100 SBD-3 which is the replacement of no less than five months... one can't kill the enemy without losses in such a battle of course so in the end we have knocked out KB without even a scratch to our fleet...

I have to downgrade several USMC dive bomber squadrons to SBD-2 and even biplane Helldivers to replace the bomber losses on our carriers and even replacing the USN pilots is going to be problematic at this stage of the war... Lexington and Saratoga will go back to Sydney after this operation and their squadrons will provide replacements for the other USN carriers...

as you can see the ground losses confirm at least one enemy carrier sunk and there are huge ops losses again which I'm not sure how those happened... I was fooled by the Jake losses thinking we have sunk a cruiser or the like but those came from the B-17 strike against Rabaul...

the USMC fighter escorts did well, losing a good dozen of their own for nearly a dozen enemy fighters shot down A2A...

KB is history and we have the enemy fleet served on a plate now still within the Triangle of Death... orders for the fleet are pursuing the enemy and bomb them into oblivion, USMC bomber squadrons have been flown to Kendari to join the carnage, there will also be an ancient biplane torpedo squadron operating out of Kendari... with all the damged ships floating around the enemy has hardly a chance to escape destruction even though we lost over 100 bombers today...

Yes but they would have to be airborne. But he didn't fly any strikes and they weren't on nav search (we would have downed dozens of them at range 6). And they would have been in range of Japanese airfields too to divert to.

Was thinking about nav search and ASW but when he moved through my sub invested waters he didn't spot more than one or two subs each day and those sightings most likely came from float planes.
